The Farmington Vineyards of west Kentucky are beautiful and lined with row after row of lush grape vines. As Willa drove past them she thought back to her childhood days spent with her best friend Kaysea Milford running down the grape laden rows. Today Kaysea's family was throwing a wine tasting party to celebrate the launch of their newest red wine. It was sure to make a grand mark amongst the nation’s red wines. After college Willa and Kaysea both went back home to join their family's prospective businesses. Neither of them were lacking for anything as both families were very well off.
Willa's family owned a large dairy farm just to the east of where the Milford's land was situated. The Stockholm Farm spanned thousands of acres and many grocery stores in the state as well as others in the country were being supplied with filtered milk from their dairy. Two generations of the Stockholm family had been working the dairy farm and making the business a billion dollar entity.
The day Willa went to the Milford's wine tasting party she encountered Grey Langly. The real estate tycoon from Frankfort who was an architect by trade. She accidentally bumped into him while carrying a glass of red wine in her hand and spilled the contents down the front of her dress. "Oh my!"
"Pardon me miss" exclaimed Grey! "Let me get you something to wipe up that mess."
When Willa locked eyes with Grey she instantly fell silent and couldn't speak. His dark eyes and handsome face rendered her speechless. She couldn't move and her heart raced.
"Are you ok?" Grey asked.
Kaysea immediately walked over to rescue Willa from the embarrassing situation. “Grey, let me introduce you to my best friend Willa Stockholm.” Willa put out her hand to greet Grey as she turned her head slightly away. She felt shy and awkward standing in front of him looking like a mess. His grasp was strong and his hands were firm. He smiled and his teeth gleamed. He had dimples when he smiled. Any woman who looked at him would surely melt under his flashy smile. He was tall and powerful looking. His voice sounded strong too. “Hi, pleased to meet you Willa.”
Willa felt her cheeks turn red and she replied “Nice to meet you as well Grey. Did I spill any wine on you? Sorry about bumping into you like that. I need to watch where I am going.”
“No worries. As long as you are ok. Maybe Kaysea has something for you to change into? You two look to be of similar size.”
Willa was stunned that he took in that they were close in size. She retorted, “It’s ok. I just live across the valley over there and I can go home if needed. I don’t need anyone making a fuss over me. Not on a big day like today. Right, Kaysea? Kaysea, if it’s ok with you I will just go in and see if you have something that I can wear. Otherwise I will head home.”
“Grey, why don’t you help Willa into the house and make sure that she doesn’t have any more mishaps on her way to finding a change of clothes?”
“Sure” he drawled.
He turned and led Willa towards the house by her elbow. He kept step with her steps but didn’t speak a word. He stood a few feet taller than her so looking at him would have been obvious. When they arrived at Kayseas bedroom she turned the knob and entered. He said “I’ll leave you to it then.”
Willa hurriedly went to the closet and searched for something suitable to wear. She didn’t know if Grey would be waiting in the hall for her or not so she thought she better not keep him waiting. Just then her phone buzzed and she saw a notification from Kaysea. After checking herself in the mirror and being satisfied with her look she opened Kaysea’s message. “Grey is so handsome isn’t he? Did you see how he was fawning over you? Sorry about sending him into the house with you. I just thought you two might want the chance to get to know each other better.”
“Yes, he is indeed quite the specimen. I didn’t really notice him looking at me. I was too busy being embarrassed. He didn’t speak to me on the way to the house. Is he shy? I’m done dressing so I guess I will head out now.”
Just as soon as Willa opened the door there stood Grey in the hallway. He was looking at his phone. He put it in his back pocket and looked at Willa up and down. “Nice dress,” he said. “How about I take you back to the party?”
“Sounds great! I promise not to spill any more wine on myself.”
“Ha, ha, I hope not.”
As they were walking out of the house Grey stated, “I didn’t know that Kaysea had a close friend living just next door. Our family’s have been friends for quite some time now. Strange how I haven’t met you before now.”
“Well you see I went to university out of country. I have not been around for the past four years and I recently got back to help with the family business. I have been studying animal science.”
“Oh, I see. Then welcome home. Are you planning on staying here for the long haul or are you headed off to greener pastures?”
Willa thought he was bold in asking such strainght forward questions when they had just met. She went ahead and gave him an answer though after a short pause. “I’m here to stay. My parents want me to take over the family business. We own a dairy farm.”
“That’s impressive.” Just then his phone rang and he had a concerned look on his face. “Sorry I need to take this call. It was nice chatting with you.”
Willa nodded and walked away to look for Kaysea. She spotted her amidst a group of local wine owners who had their glasses raised as if making a toast. Kaysea was smiling and looked stunning as ever with her golden hair and fair skin. The pale blue dress she had on made her eyes sparkle. When the toast was over Kaysea looked at Willa and motioned her over and the two walked away from the crowd.
“You look great in that dress! I forgot I bought that when I went to Memphis in the spring. Where did that rascal Grey run off to?”
“He had to take a phone call. It seemed like it might be something serious so he took his leave from me. I’m not sure if he left or not” Willa explained.
“Well now that you are home there will be plenty of more chances for the two of you to meet again” Kaysea winked. Willa didn’t know if she should be flattered or scared at the way Kaysea seemed to want to get them together. Willa was home and she only had one thing on her mind and it certainly wasn’t to try and land a man.
Hi there! Thanks for taking the time to read my first novel! After retiring from teaching, I just couldn't sit still too long. My love of reading and writing has lead me down the road of SEO writing, blogging and now novels. I hope you enjoy my style and can give me some words of encouragement along the way and some gems too!
Willa was not a stranger to hard work. From an early age she was used to getting up early and milking cows and tending to the horses on the farm. Learning the family business had a lot of responsibilities. It also included going to the office on occasion with her parents while they worked. Her and her older sister would be asked to do minor things to help out around the office. Two generations of the Stockholm family were now involved in the dairy farm. After grandpa Ben passed away he left everything to his only son Trevor, Willa’s dad. Since Trevor didn’t have any sons of his own just two daughters, Willa and Rainey were destined to run the family business. They were more than willing to do it too, because they both grew up knowing how important it was to continue the family's success. Besides they saw how much money the business was able to rake in even though their parents worked long hours. They were treated well all around and were the envy of many in town. Rainey worke
The building that housed Stockholm Dairies was impressive for the small town of Lawrenceburg. It was three stories and made of brick and had many windows. Dad’s office was on the top floor overlooking the street and a huge park that the business had donated to the city. It was full of trees, flowers, pathways for walking, picnic areas, and a pond in the middle. Many of the employees frequented the park during lunch and breaks to enjoy the outdoors and to get in a walk. When entering the building one had to go through a security check and scan a badge. Dad’s office had his own special elevator so he used his badge to open the elevator and head up. When the elevator doors opened his secretary Tricia greeted them and followed along into his huge office. Dad’s office was decorated in dark leather with a huge wrap around desk. He had two leather couches that faced each other with a glass coffee table in the middle and a cow hide underneath. A set of double doors on one side led in
Grey’s driver opened the car door for them and they rode off in his black Maybach. It was top of the line and completely private in the back with a screen that went up between the driver and passengers. Willa felt a little uneasy with just the two of them in the back of the car together. He seemed a little too domineering for her.“I didn’t expect to run into you again so soon after just meeting you at the Farmington Vineyards. Small world.” He actually did know about her to some degree because he had done some digging around about the Stockholms for his Aunt Miller’s piece of mind. So he told just a little white lie.“Yes, indeed.” Willa felt uneasy and she shifted in her seat. “I don’t mean to be forward, but how do you know the Miller Dairy folks? I was surprised to see you today for the acquisition of their dairy farm. Aren’t you in the real estate side of business?”Grey looked at her intently before he spoke. “I am in real estate. I also have connections with the Mil
When Willa arrived home Trevor and Martha were both lounging on the large front porch of the mansion. Dad had a glass of whiskey in his hand and Martha was holding a glass of lemonade. Willa’s heart jumped up at the sight of them. She had missed being away from home while studying and was glad to finally be back even if the circumstances were not perfect. Seeing her parents together and happy was enough.“Dinner is ready. Let’s go eat and catch up on how the rest of your day went Willa. I was telling your mom that Grey invited you out to lunch. She can’t wait to hear how that went.” Trevor said as they all walked into the house.Trevor sat at the head of the dining table and Martha sat next to him while Willa sat on his other side. A few minutes later Rainey came in late as usual. Martha quipped, “Rainey are you planning on being late for your wedding too?” Trevor chuckled.Rainey scowled and furrowed her brows. “No mom, I don't plan on it. As long as the marriage happens
"Good morning sunshine!" Kaysea chirped. "A little birdie told me something about you and our mutual friend Grey Langley. So how come you are holding out on me? I thought we were besties.""Wow! How did you know that I had lunch with him?" Willa couldn't believe that the local gossip had started chattering already about her. She had just gotten back into town. It hadn't even been a full week yet.“It’s a small town Willa. You know that everybody knows everyone around these parts. My friend Tiffany happened to see the two of you going into Baron’s at around noon. She said that she recognized you from the pictures of us that I have at home. She described him as tall and quite striking with his dark eyes, dimples and gleaming teeth. I knew from the description that she could only be talking about Grey.” Kaysea sounded giddy.Willa was flustered and she didn’t want to sound like she was holding back so she blurted out, “He asked me out to lunch after the meeting in our office
Willa sat down and took a long sip of her water. Why was Grey sending her flowers after a simple lunch date? Did he treat all of his lunch dates like this or was she reading too much into this? She picked up her phone and sent him a quick message.‘You didn’t have to send over flowers. They really are beautiful though.’Willa’s heart raced at the thought of hearing from him. A few minutes went by and then a few more. She panicked and looked to make sure that she had sent the message to the right number. Still no reply back. After ten minutes she decided to try and get some work done. She opened the laptop and read through some of her email. Henry had sent over the phone information she requested along with the phone tree. She made files for each document because she didn’t like to have a huge pile of random emails to keep track of. Keeping things simplified was easier with technology in today’s fast paced world.Just then her phone buzzed. She picked it up and saw a messa
Willa headed back up to the office and Tricia handed her a stack of memos. “Your dad said you could handle these. He left to go look after your mom this afternoon. He thought you would be back earlier so he could talk to you himself. Give him a call if you need something, otherwise I’ll be here as usual to help you as well.”Tricia noticed the garment bag and other bag that Willa carried and asked her if she could put it away for her. Willa handed it off. “Can I take a peek at what you bought?” Tricia asked.“Sure, it’s just an outfit for a dinner date that I have on Friday,” said Willa.“This sure is beautiful! Who is the lucky guy?” Tricia was fishing for more information.Willa hesitated before answering her. “I’m going out to a client dinner with Grey Langley. Please don’t tell anyone. After our lunch the other day the news about it was all over the place. You know me. I like to keep things low key.”“Definitely Willa! Mums the word,” Tricia winked at her and placed h
“What happened? Why did you leave work early? Tricia wouldn’t give me any details. She just said that you had a situation at home.” Kaysea sounded frantic. “Calm down Kaysea! It was Trigger. The stablehand found him laying down in the paddock earlier today so dad called me just in case things turned for the worse. He’s stable for now and the vet is staying with him overnight. Seems like he ate something bad. I would have called you before now, but once I got home it was one thing after another. I just caught a break.” Willa tried to reassure her friend. “Thank God! I was worried something happened to your mom. Sorry to hear about Trigger though. I wonder what he got into? Are they sure he ate something bad?” “Yep, that’s what the blood exam is leaning towards. I’m just glad they ruled out poison. Although if he had been poisoned, I don’t know who would have wanted to do that and why? He’s on a drip right now and about to go to a second one with antibiotics. I fee
