Willa was not a stranger to hard work. From an early age she was used to getting up early and milking cows and tending to the horses on the farm. Learning the family business had a lot of responsibilities. It also included going to the office on occasion with her parents while they worked. Her and her older sister would be asked to do minor things to help out around the office. Two generations of the Stockholm family were now involved in the dairy farm. After grandpa Ben passed away he left everything to his only son Trevor, Willa’s dad. Since Trevor didn’t have any sons of his own just two daughters, Willa and Rainey were destined to run the family business. They were more than willing to do it too, because they both grew up knowing how important it was to continue the family's success. Besides they saw how much money the business was able to rake in even though their parents worked long hours. They were treated well all around and were the envy of many in town.
Rainey worked hard on the farm, but she wanted to look after the books and had gotten a degree in accounting. She was a few years older than Willa and had already taken over the accounting department of the dairy farm. She had a fiance and they were planning on getting married in the fall when the weather turned cooler. Rainey met her fiance in college while she was studying. Cal was an accountant as well. He had a job with a big bank in Frankfort, the capital of Kentucky as an executive accountant.
That left Willa with overseeing Stockholm Dairy Farms when her father decided to hand over the reins. Her father was a well known businessman in the industry and many looked up to him. Willa had big shoes to fill and she didn’t want to let her father or family down. The plan was for her to take the next two years under her dad’s wing and learn all of the ins and outs until he handed everything over to her. It would be a big transfer of power.
Her parents were getting old and wanted to start enjoying retirement. Willa’s mom had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and started going to treatment. Life at the Stockholm household was hectic and it turned upside down all at the same time. Martha needed a full time nurse to help out with her care and someone to make sure she was getting back and forth to her treatments. Life on the dairy farm didn’t wait for anyone.
Although the company ran like a well oiled machine, Willa’s dad Trevor was slowing down due to running himself ragged. Taking care of Martha and looking after his company were wearing him out. It was a good thing that Willa was home now to help out. He could finally take a breather and put some of the workload on her shoulders.
That first Monday morning Trevor met Willa for breakfast in the breakfast room and kissed Martha on the cheek. Martha had been settled in by the nurse and was ready to eat with her family. Rainey sauntered in just as the kitchen help started to serve breakfast. “I could eat a horse! How about y’all?”
“Rainey, you are always hungry,” Martha said. “If I didn’t know any better I’d think you have a tapeworm inside your belly.”
“Oh mom! You know I only eat two meals a day. I’m so busy at work that I skip lunch,” Rainey scowled. “I’ve got another busy day today as well. We have the acquisition for the Miller farm happening today remember. I have to make sure that all of the numbers are in order before we take over.”
Trevor spoke up “Make sure that Cal has all of his ducks in a row today too. I don’t want anything to go wrong. Willa you will head to the office with me just as soon as breakfast is over.”
“Sure dad.” Willa finished her breakfast and headed out the door with Trevor. They hopped into his GMC truck and made tracks towards the family business in town. Stockholm Dairies was headquartered in Lawrenceburg about twenty minutes away from the family home.
As the cow pastures flowed by, Trevor finally spoke first, breaking the silence. “How are you settling in? You have been gone for quite some time and a few things have changed. Your mom’s condition for one thing has declined, but hopefully having you around will boost her spirits.”
“I’m getting back into the routine just fine dad. Seeing mom struggle is sort of hard. I hope that her condition gets better. I see that it is taking a toll on you too. Maybe you should let yourself have a break after this Miller acquisition and let me handle more. You can work from home and look after mom more if you’d like. I’m sure she’d feel better if you did.”
“Yes, it is rather hard seeing her in such a state. Let’s get through the Miller dealings today and see how it goes. I could use a little break. If you want to head to the office everyday and I can stay at home and work from the home office, then we can probably still get along just fine. It would make me feel better if I could help Martha along this journey a bit more,” Trevor smiled.
“Anything you need dad and I’m here to help you get it done. I’m not the little girl I once was. Going to school in the UK was an opportunity that I can’t ever repay. I learned so much about myself as a person. I promise I won’t let you or our family down,” Willa said proudly.
Trevor replied to her, “I believe in you! I’m so glad that you could come home and help out with the business while I am tending to your mom. She really needs me right now more than anyone. You know how much family means to her. Honestly, family means a lot to both of us. I will probably need to lean on you more than originally planned so don’t be shocked.”
“Ok, dad. I won’t be. Just do what you have to do for you and mom. I’ll handle the rest.” Willa’s parents were extremely close and she understood the deep rooted feelings they had for each other. She hoped that one day she would have the kind of marriage her parents had.
The building that housed Stockholm Dairies was impressive for the small town of Lawrenceburg. It was three stories and made of brick and had many windows. Dad’s office was on the top floor overlooking the street and a huge park that the business had donated to the city. It was full of trees, flowers, pathways for walking, picnic areas, and a pond in the middle. Many of the employees frequented the park during lunch and breaks to enjoy the outdoors and to get in a walk. When entering the building one had to go through a security check and scan a badge. Dad’s office had his own special elevator so he used his badge to open the elevator and head up. When the elevator doors opened his secretary Tricia greeted them and followed along into his huge office. Dad’s office was decorated in dark leather with a huge wrap around desk. He had two leather couches that faced each other with a glass coffee table in the middle and a cow hide underneath. A set of double doors on one side led in
Grey’s driver opened the car door for them and they rode off in his black Maybach. It was top of the line and completely private in the back with a screen that went up between the driver and passengers. Willa felt a little uneasy with just the two of them in the back of the car together. He seemed a little too domineering for her.“I didn’t expect to run into you again so soon after just meeting you at the Farmington Vineyards. Small world.” He actually did know about her to some degree because he had done some digging around about the Stockholms for his Aunt Miller’s piece of mind. So he told just a little white lie.“Yes, indeed.” Willa felt uneasy and she shifted in her seat. “I don’t mean to be forward, but how do you know the Miller Dairy folks? I was surprised to see you today for the acquisition of their dairy farm. Aren’t you in the real estate side of business?”Grey looked at her intently before he spoke. “I am in real estate. I also have connections with the Mil
When Willa arrived home Trevor and Martha were both lounging on the large front porch of the mansion. Dad had a glass of whiskey in his hand and Martha was holding a glass of lemonade. Willa’s heart jumped up at the sight of them. She had missed being away from home while studying and was glad to finally be back even if the circumstances were not perfect. Seeing her parents together and happy was enough.“Dinner is ready. Let’s go eat and catch up on how the rest of your day went Willa. I was telling your mom that Grey invited you out to lunch. She can’t wait to hear how that went.” Trevor said as they all walked into the house.Trevor sat at the head of the dining table and Martha sat next to him while Willa sat on his other side. A few minutes later Rainey came in late as usual. Martha quipped, “Rainey are you planning on being late for your wedding too?” Trevor chuckled.Rainey scowled and furrowed her brows. “No mom, I don't plan on it. As long as the marriage happens
"Good morning sunshine!" Kaysea chirped. "A little birdie told me something about you and our mutual friend Grey Langley. So how come you are holding out on me? I thought we were besties.""Wow! How did you know that I had lunch with him?" Willa couldn't believe that the local gossip had started chattering already about her. She had just gotten back into town. It hadn't even been a full week yet.“It’s a small town Willa. You know that everybody knows everyone around these parts. My friend Tiffany happened to see the two of you going into Baron’s at around noon. She said that she recognized you from the pictures of us that I have at home. She described him as tall and quite striking with his dark eyes, dimples and gleaming teeth. I knew from the description that she could only be talking about Grey.” Kaysea sounded giddy.Willa was flustered and she didn’t want to sound like she was holding back so she blurted out, “He asked me out to lunch after the meeting in our office
Willa sat down and took a long sip of her water. Why was Grey sending her flowers after a simple lunch date? Did he treat all of his lunch dates like this or was she reading too much into this? She picked up her phone and sent him a quick message.‘You didn’t have to send over flowers. They really are beautiful though.’Willa’s heart raced at the thought of hearing from him. A few minutes went by and then a few more. She panicked and looked to make sure that she had sent the message to the right number. Still no reply back. After ten minutes she decided to try and get some work done. She opened the laptop and read through some of her email. Henry had sent over the phone information she requested along with the phone tree. She made files for each document because she didn’t like to have a huge pile of random emails to keep track of. Keeping things simplified was easier with technology in today’s fast paced world.Just then her phone buzzed. She picked it up and saw a messa
Willa headed back up to the office and Tricia handed her a stack of memos. “Your dad said you could handle these. He left to go look after your mom this afternoon. He thought you would be back earlier so he could talk to you himself. Give him a call if you need something, otherwise I’ll be here as usual to help you as well.”Tricia noticed the garment bag and other bag that Willa carried and asked her if she could put it away for her. Willa handed it off. “Can I take a peek at what you bought?” Tricia asked.“Sure, it’s just an outfit for a dinner date that I have on Friday,” said Willa.“This sure is beautiful! Who is the lucky guy?” Tricia was fishing for more information.Willa hesitated before answering her. “I’m going out to a client dinner with Grey Langley. Please don’t tell anyone. After our lunch the other day the news about it was all over the place. You know me. I like to keep things low key.”“Definitely Willa! Mums the word,” Tricia winked at her and placed h
“What happened? Why did you leave work early? Tricia wouldn’t give me any details. She just said that you had a situation at home.” Kaysea sounded frantic. “Calm down Kaysea! It was Trigger. The stablehand found him laying down in the paddock earlier today so dad called me just in case things turned for the worse. He’s stable for now and the vet is staying with him overnight. Seems like he ate something bad. I would have called you before now, but once I got home it was one thing after another. I just caught a break.” Willa tried to reassure her friend. “Thank God! I was worried something happened to your mom. Sorry to hear about Trigger though. I wonder what he got into? Are they sure he ate something bad?” “Yep, that’s what the blood exam is leaning towards. I’m just glad they ruled out poison. Although if he had been poisoned, I don’t know who would have wanted to do that and why? He’s on a drip right now and about to go to a second one with antibiotics. I fee
The remainder of the week flew by. Trigger slowly regained his strength and the vet was able to let him get back out into the pasture. Of course, the stablehand did a thorough sweep of the grounds to make sure that there weren’t any items he could eat that would cause him trouble again. The Thursday before the dinner party Grey called Willa up and chatted with her about some last minute details. He didn’t want to catch her off guard and since he didn’t know her temperament he didn’t want to cause a scene in front of his clients. “Willa, I know that we don’t know much about each other’s pasts so I just want to go ahead and give you a heads up that my ex-girlfriend is going to be attending this party. She works for my agency and is friends with my clients. Our relationship has been over for a year or so. I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable around her. I don’t think that she will bring anything up about it, but if she does you won’t be surprised now.” Willa was quiet for a wh
