Chapter Four: Cancelled Date

Adam

I could hear my phone going off and I wondered who would be calling me at this time. Sitting up, I took the phone from off the table beside my bed before I looked at the caller’s ID then answered it. “Hey,” her voice came into the phone.

“Hey,” I replied while I watched the blond hair girl beside me move then settled back down comfortably in bed.

“Before I get into why I called you, I want to thank you for sending your driver although he seemed very scary and had made me feel uncomfortable all the way home.”

Chuckling, I replied, “he told me that you practically ran out of the car when he had stopped at your home. You don't have to fear him, he isn't that bad. I would've picked you up myself but I was busy.”

“Yeah right and I’m the queen of the moon,” she retorted sarcastically. “Anyways I called to ask if we could hang out first before we go on a date like get to know each other, our likes and dislikes and other stuff?” before I could answer the blond hair girl shift again before she sat up straight in bed. Putting my hands to my lips as an indication to be quiet she cut her eyes at me before she laid back down.

“Sorry about that, it's no problem. Say we meet at the café around the corner from the bookstore?”

“Sure, no problem, thank you again for the ride and for doing this. Good night.”

“Good night,” I replied before she hung the phone up. Setting the phone down on the table, I heard Heather’s voice come out.

“Are you cheating on me, Adam?” As soon as I heard her question, my head whipped around so fast it seemed like I had whiplash.

“Heather this is nothing more than just a fuck so don’t read much into it.” Scoffing in disgust, she got out of bed and got dressed before exiting without saying another word. Shaking my head at her behavior, I muttered, “drama queen” under my breath before I settled down back comfortably in bed. Waking up early the next morning, I took a shower, brushed my teeth, and washed my hair before I got dressed in something casual––jeans and a t-shirt. Going into my office, just down the hall, I sat in my chair and powered on my laptop before I got down to work.

By the time I had finished, it was three in the afternoon. Going upstairs, I got dressed into something suitable for the office. Going downstairs, I went into the kitchen to get a glass of orange juice and was greeted by my dad who was at the kitchen table drinking a cup of coffee dressed in golf clothing.

“Hey, dad, coffee at this hour? And are you going golfing?”

“Yes, I have a headache and I wanted something warm and yes I am going golfing. I want you to join me so cancel whatever meeting or work that you have today and come spend some time with your old man at the golf course. We hardly get to spend time together since you became the CEO. I know it demands a lot but you're forgetting your dad,” he said in a sad tone.

Always the one who couldn't deny my father I replied, “sure, but we have to be back before seven. I have somewhere that I have to be and it is something that I am looking forward to.”

“No problem and we will be back before then,” he said with a smile on his face.

Excusing myself I went back upstairs to remove my suit and put on something more comfortable for golfing. Redressing in grey golf pants with a white belt, white golf shirt, and white golf shoes I went back downstairs to see my dad with the bag of golf clubs and golf balls in a basket.

Lifting the golf clubs over my shoulder I called out to Sophia our head of housekeeping, who came hurrying into the kitchen. “We’re going out for a few hours, please make sure everything is taking care of. We will leave James here to take care of you and to make sure no stranger comes in and out of the house."

Upon hearing his name Sophia started blushing like a schoolgirl. “Okay,” she replied before hurrying away.

Sophia Gonzalez has been with the family for fifteen years, she was my mom's best friend and counselor in her time of need. She always treated me like her own and I love her like a second mom. She was treated like a family member rather than a member of staff. She was the humblest woman I know. With salt and pepper hair and standing at five feet, she was very caring and pleasant but could be very fierce and stern if need be. She had scolded and disciplined me on multiple occasions when I had stepped out of line and thrown my tantrums during my angry phase.

I kind of have this feeling that she likes James and he likes her too. It was something even the blind could see by the way they act when they are around each other. They always laugh at each other's jokes and Sophia is always blushing when she sees him. I want to interfere by bringing them together but I wasn't the meddling type and who knows maybe they are already together and are keeping it a secret.

Kissing her goodbye, we were about to walk out of the kitchen when James came in.

“James we are going to the golf course while we are gone we want you to watch over the house and also Sophia,” My dad said to him.

Hearing Sophia's name his eyes darted to the maid headquarters which was on the opposite end of the kitchen before it darted back. Laughing to myself, I touched my dad’s shoulder and told him that I was going to fetch the car from the garage. Exiting the kitchen, I turned to the right and walked down the hall that would lead me to the five-door garage. Picking up the Audi keys from off the hook, I opened the trunk and placed the golf clubs inside before I  pressed the garage door button on the wall on the inside before going inside the car, waiting for the door to fully elevate so I could exit.

After the garage door had finally elevated, I drove out of the garage and stopped when I was now outside. Getting out of the car, I pressed the garage door button on the outside before getting back inside my car and driving around to the entrance of the house where I saw my dad standing outside waiting on me. Pop opening the trunk, he placed the basket with the golf balls inside and closed it before getting in the car where we drove off to the golf course that was located on the other side of town.

“Dad, are you okay?” I asked when I noticed he wasn't speaking to me. I knew why he had wanted me to come to the golf course with him, he wanted to talk to me about the incident with Heather.

“Yes, I am a son. Just thinking about some things. When we arrive at the golf course we can talk.”

Dropping the issue, I continued driving. I didn't want him to know that James had told me what happened although he did it vaguely. Reaching the golf course, I found a spot and parked. Turning off the ignition I got out and opened the trunk to take out the golf clubs and balls. Lifting out the bag and the basket we walked towards the course.

Going to the tee-box I took up’ the muscle-back iron’ while my dad took out the cavity-back iron. Taking up one of the golf balls that my dad scattered on the ground I took a swing and the ball found the hole. Taking up another ball I put it down and was about to swing when I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. Dropping the golf club, I took my phone out and saw that Emily had texted me.

Opening it I saw that she texted me saying that she couldn't make it today because something had come up and she was sorry.

Putting my phone back in my pocket I walked away from my dad and went to sit on the chair that was nearby ignoring my dad who was asking what was wrong. Walking up toward me he also took a seat before asking, “what's the matter son? Why are you so upset?”

“I have met someone's dad, her name is Emily and we were supposed to hang out today but she blew me off.”

“I'm sorry to hear that, son. I am really surprised this is the first time I ever saw you get so upset over a girl and also heard you speak of one. Do you like her?”

“I think I do, I am not sure as yet for we had just met yesterday.”

“Well based on your reaction that you gave off when she blew you off I would say that you do like her.”

“I don't think so, dad, maybe it's because I just saw her and wanted her, maybe it's the lust making me feel this way. Leaving me so confused.”

“Son I have been down this road before so I am going to give you some advice on what I have learned. You need to drop the lifestyle that you're living or else, this ‘I can do whatever I want, get whoever I want because I am young and free’ It's not worth it. You need to change or else you're going to hurt this girl if things get more serious. Just last night you had someone in your bed, and now you are talking about someone else that you may seem to be developing feelings for.

Sighing, I knew he was right. I knew what he was telling me was the truth but somehow, I fail to acknowledge it. I didn't want to succumb to just one person. I have never fallen in love with any woman other than your mother and she is now gone from me. I have this fear that when I do fall in love with someone they too will be taken from me.

“Promise me, son, that you would at least consider what I have said.”

“I will dad.”

“Before we go back to the golf course, I want to speak to you about an incident that happened yesterday. After you had left for work a young woman came to the house and said her name was Heather Summers. She was a demanding brat who was very vulgar. James had told her you were not here you were on a business trip and that you said you didn't want to see her again. She had gotten upset by this and started taking off her shoes and throwing at the men who had come downstairs to subdue her. It was a very messy scene, she had to be dragged off the property and she was still creating a scene saying that she will always be the best you ever had.”

I had tried to contain my laughter but the situation was so humorous that I had to start laughing. That girl is one crazy chick and I am sorry that I had made that mistake by talking to her. “I'm sorry that you had to witness that dad. I can honestly promise you that it will not happen again. I will talk to her about the situation.”

“You better!” He replied sternly.

Laughing at his remark I told him I was ready to get back on the course. Walking back to the tee-box we began playing each hole until we had moved to the rough.

We had played for hours and when I had checked the time on my phone I saw that it was thirty minutes to seven. Packing up, we headed for the car where we put the gears in the trunk and drove off. Reaching home, we were greeted by cheerful laughter. Walking towards the sound we saw that it was James and Sophia talking and laughing. Quickly walking away, we went upstairs, taking different directions to go into our room.

Removing my clothes, I went to the shower to take a hot bath. Coming out I got dressed in my grey sweatpants. Laying down on the bed I picked up my phone and decided that I should call Emily. The phone rang two times before she picked up.

“Why did you blow me off today?” I asked in an angry tone. “I was looking forward to seeing you and you blew me off without even an explanation.”

“I'm sorry, okay Adam I am when I got home today I had found my mom unconscious and I had to rush her to the hospital,” she sobbed in my ear.

“Is she okay?” I asked in a panicked voice. Feeling like a complete airhead for being angry with her without first trying to find out why she blew me off.

“Yes, she is. She is just sleeping at the moment.”

“What's the name of the hospital? I'm coming to see you.”

“Beverly Memorial Hospital. She’s in room 102.”

Hanging up the phone, I put on a shirt and jeans before grabbing my keys and hurrying out.
