My dad was an electrical contractor running a small firm with about fifty employees. Business was good, and we lived in a modest bungalow in a middle-class neighborhood, Wendy, my younger sister, and I attended good school. Then, in February, all that started to change.
âDad, what is it?â I was alarmed. I just returned from school, exhausted, only to meet my dad clutching his chest.
He stared at me gasping soundlessly.
I immediately knew he was having a heart attack. I called emergency services, then my mother.
I hung up and turned to my father and began performing CPR. Help finally came and he was taken to hospital.
He was wheeled into the ED, while I sat worrying in the waiting room.
Would he be okay? My Mom came in. âWhat happened? Where is he?â
âA heart attack. He has been taken to the ED,â I explained, getting up to hug her, but she brushed me away and sat down.
âTell me what happened?â She demanded.
Sighing, I sat beside her, and explained everything.
âI am sure he will be okay, mom.â I tried to reassure her by placing my hand on hers.
She removed her hand in anger, then got up and went to get coffee.
I sighed again.
I didnât know why mom hates me. She and my dad loved me when I was younger. Maybe because for ten years Iâd been their only child. Then Wendy had been born and all that had changed. She had suddenly become hostile, and nothing I did was good enough anymore. Wendy was now her favorite. My Dadâs attitude never changed though. He continued to shower me with love, and we became very close.
The doctor walked up to me.
âIs he okay? Please tell me he is okay,â I pleaded tearfully.
âHe is stable now,â she assured me.
âWas it a heart attack?â I asked.
âYes, but he is okay now. He was lucky you were there.â
My Mom came to join us. âIs my husband going to be alright?â She asked.
The doctor repeated what she had told me, then added, âHe will be able to go home in a couple of days.â
âCan we see him?â my mom asked.
âSure,â the doctor replied.
My dad looked fine, only tired. He smiled at me.
âDad!â I went to hug him. âThank God you are okay.â
âThanks to you, sweetheart.â He hugged me.
âLeave him to rest,â my mom spat harshly.
âItâs okay honey, Iâm fine,â my dad said.
âNo, you are not, you work too much. The doctor says from now on youâve got to take it easy,â my mom told him. âThe business will be fine; you need to rest.â
My dad was discharged a few days later, but refused to reduce his work load.
In March, he suffered a stroke. He was in hospital for months, then was sent home. My Mom looked after him by day, and I took over at night. It was hard for me, but I loved my dad, and did it gladly. Just when it seemed he was getting better, he suffered another attack.

I stared into space. My dad was gone.
My mom sat beside me. As usual, her attention was focused on Wendy. I might have been invisible for all she cared. I looked around the auditorium, most of the mourners were my fatherâs employees, and a few of his friends.
People at the funeral service were rising. I rose too, and we all went to the graveside.
The tears started up again. I had been crying since my father died, and had thought by now the tears would have all dried up, but I was wrong. I bit my lips and looked around for my mom and Wendy. I saw them a few feet away. My Mom had an arm around Wendyâs shoulder. I walked over to them hoping to have the other arm around my shoulders, but when I stood close to her, she wrapped both arms around my sister. I felt colder and lonelier than ever.
âAre you okay?â
I turned. It was Jenny. She put her arm around my shoulders.
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak, glad that she had come.
âIt will soon be over,â she assured me.
Finally, my father was led to rest. I could hear my mom and Wendy weeping. My tears fell softly.
By Friday afternoon, I was still brooding, but slowly coming to terms with my loss. I was in my room on my phone, searching for colleges I could apply to, then I heard my mom driving in. She had gone to see my dadâs lawyer to discuss his estate. I heard her come in and went to welcome her.
âWelcome back mom, how did it go?â I asked.
âWhere is Wendy?â she inquired, ignoring my greeting.
âNext door with a friend,â I said. âIs anything the matter, mom? What did the lawyer say?â I asked, worried by her tensed expression.
âLater!â she snapped, and went into the kitchen.
I had a foreboding: very bad news was coming my way.
And I was right. After dinner that evening, I received it.
âI was with the lawyer today,â our mother began, as we all sat in the living room, âand the news isnât good.â
We stared at her anxiously.
âYour dad got into a lot of debt. We are going to have to declare the company.â
âWhat! How?â I couldnât believe it. I knew business had been bad after my dad had a stroke, and the hospital bills had been huge, but I didnât ever think things were that ugly.
âI have not finished,â she interrupted, âthe mortgage hasnât been paid off.â
âMeaning?â I asked, knowing exactly what it meant.
âThe bank is going to foreclose!â My mom declared.
I was shocked.
âThere must be some mistakes,â I whispered. âDad must have left something. He said he would make sure we went to college. He must have left us something.â
âWell, he did not!â She said harshly. âThe lawyer and I have gone through everything. We are bankrupt. So you can forget college.â
âSo dad couldnât keep his promise?â Wendy asked sadly.
âIt wasnât his fault, sweetheart. The illness took a lot from us,â she told her gently.
âHow much time do we have?â I asked.
âTill the end of the month.â
Wendy swallowed nervously, âEighteen days!â
âSo what are we going to do?â I asked.
My mom stared at me as if I were a pile of bird droppings.
âWe are not going to do anything. Wendy and I are moving in with my sister till I decide what to do. You sort yourself out.â
I stared at her, and repeated her words, âSort myself out. How do you mean, Mom?â
âWhat I said. Find a place of your own. You are twenty years old, already an adult. Start acting like one.â
âBut mom, how am I to do that? I have no money, no job-â
âThen get a job. You are an adult. Figure it out yourself. Enough of freeloading! Take responsibility for yourself.â
âLet me stay till I get a job,â I said, hoping she wouldnât decline.
âWendy is my responsibility, you are not. If I were you, Iâd get a job, and fast too. You have eighteen days.â She stood up. âCome on honey, it is time for bed.â
She took Wendyâs hand, and they left me sitting there.
First, my dad was gone, now my home is going too.
Beckyâs POVIt didnât take long for the cop to find the key and get the chain off my leg. I felt a little dizzy when I tried to stand, but aside from that I was fine. The officer insisted on taking me to the hospital even though I told them I was okay. All I needed was a bath. Phillip rode with me in the ambulance while Celine and Frank were handcuffed and taken away. The doctors agreed I was okay except for the bruise on my ankle, I was told they would keep me for twenty-four hours then I could go home.âI will call Sandra, and the rest to let them know you are okay,â Phillip said as he kissed me.âSure.âFinally, I was able to take a shower. I felt a lot better, but when I laid down, I couldnât help being furious about the whole thing. How could Frank do such a thing? He said he loved me, was kidnapping me a funny way of showing it?Sandra and Jenny arrived so quickly I wondered if they had been in the area. They hugged me tightly, laughing and crying.âThank God you are okay! What h
Phillipâs POVâFrank! What the hell! Is this a joke?â Rebecca asked.I just stared at him, too lost to find my voice.âDoes it look like a joke, Rebecca?â Frank sneered.âFrank, what are you doing?â I finally was able to mutter.âWe are working together. Are you surprised?â Celine asked.âWhat? So Dom is working for you?â Rebecca asked in astonishment.âSure. He has been my eye in the house from the day he was hired,â Frank smirked. âHis job was to keep an eye on everyone there.ââWhy?â I asked, stunned.âAre you asking, you idiot?â he laughed. âYou really think I like you? You are dumber than I thought.ââWe have been working together from the beginning. We knew each other before he introduced me to you, so it wasnât so hard to come along,â Celine grinned.âSo all the sabotage I have been having at the company, and the investors pulling out because of a false rumor, you were behind it?â I flared at Frank.âYes. And I also told Jessica to dump you. I told her you were having an affair
Phillipâs POVIt was quite late when I got to the beach. Throughout the drive I kept wondering if I was doing the right thing. The kidnapper had phoned me on my way down and asked me to meet him there. He had told me to turn off my handset, and leave it in the car, warning me not to try anything stupid. The way he spoke, I guessed he was somehow observing me. And on my way down I had a feeling that there was someone coming behind me. I pulled up in front of the rundown abandoned building on the edge of the beach that had once been a warehouse. I did everything I was told and stepped out of the car. The air was cold and damp. I could hear the waves and my heart raced as I walked towards the building. I touched an old wooden door and it opened. It was dark inside, but the moonlight streamed in. Everywhere was quiet.âHello!â I called out. The empty building echoed back at me.âAnyone here? Rebecca?ââPut your hands behind you!â A voice said quietly behind me.My heart skipped, but I o
Beckyâs POVâIt has been awhile hasnât it?â Celine sneered.âSo you are behind this? You are working with Dom! I guessed it.ââI am not the only one, stupid.â She laughed.âWho else? Your dad, right?ââYou donât need to know. Did you really think you and Phillip would get away with what you did to my family?ââWe didnât do anything!â I said angrily. âHe did. My dad lost his company and reputation because of him! Now it is time for payback.ââYou wonât get away with this, Celine!â âSave it! We already have. We are going to get money and get rid of you both.âI swallowed nervously.âWhat do you mean?â I demanded.âSimple, stupid. We are going to get ransom for you, then make sure you are never seen again. Are you scared?â She asked mockingly.âIt wonât work. Phillip has probably informed the security agencies. If you kill me, you will regret it,â I said bravely.âHe hasnât, and he wonât. Besides who said anything about killing you? Although I would have preferred that, my partner has
Phillipâs POVSandra and Jenny looked at me anxiously as I hung up.âWell?â They asked.âThe caller is asking for two hundred million dollars.â Sandra gasped. âWhen does he want it?â She muttered.âIn five days.ââI will pay for it.ââDo you have that much money aunt Sandy? Your company may collapse,â Jenny told her.âI donât mind,â she said. âOkay, I will pay half. Can you make up for the rest, Phillip?ââWait, you want us to pay the ransom?â I asked, surprised.âOf course,â they chorused.âNo. We are not paying any ransom. I will call the police.ââNo! The kidnapper warned you not to, remember?â Jenny said.Sandra joined her. âShe is right. We will keep it quiet, pay the ransom and Rebecca will be returned to us.â âCome on you two, you canât really believe that? What if he gets the money and we never hear from him or Rebecca again?ââIt is a risk we have to take,â Jenny said.âI prefer to risk going to the police,â I insisted.âNo. Pay the money. It is the only way to get her bac
Beckyâs POVI groaned and twisted as light infiltrated into my eyes. My eyes still felt heavy and that arrogant fragrance was still hovering over my nose.I thought I was at home and was drifting off to sleep again when I heard a cellphone ringing somewhere. The ringtone sounded like mine. I forced myself to open my eyes, and realized with a shock that I wasnât on my bed at home.Quickly sitting up, my head spun a bit, and realization hit me that I was on an airbed. I looked around and noticed how small and dusty the room was. The only thing visible being the airbed and a portable toilet. Light streamed in from a glass window that had metal bars.Where am I? I thought.I scanned through my brain to recollect my past. Then I remembered. I was at the cemetery, about to leave when I saw Dom standing near my car. I remembered the hankie he tossed before me before I went blank. My heart skipped a beat. Did Dom kidnap me? Why? For money or something more? I tried to stand up, but I felt a p
