Chapter 3

Author: Thursday
I returned home and began packing, pulling out every valuable I owned.

I was going to sell them all. I would convert everything into supplies and provisions and donate it to the injured wolves and orphaned pups at the border.

Over the next few days, I stayed completely out of Kael and Mira’s sight, focusing solely on handling my assets.

As my father’s only daughter, what I owned far exceeded what most people could imagine. These things were symbols of my status.

In my past life, they were the very things I gave away without hesitation, just to please Kael. Now, they were nothing more than chains.

Somehow, Kael got wind of it. He stormed into my residence, fury written all over his face.

"Talia, what the hell are you playing at? You think doing all this makes you look kind? Noble? You think it’ll make me change my mind?"

I didn’t even look up. My voice was calm. "That’s not what I’m doing."

"No?" Kael let out a cold laugh as he stepped closer. "You’re just using charity as an excuse to win over more of the pack and to make me see you differently. Let me tell you something. It’s useless. No matter what you do, in my eyes, you won’t even measure up to a fraction of Mira."

He paused, then leaned in close to my ear. "No matter how powerful your family is, it can’t buy real class. Talia, I honestly don’t know how you turned into this."

He had said these same words countless times in my past life. Each time, they were like a blade, driven straight into my heart.

Now, I simply lifted my gaze, looked at him once, and gave a faint smile.

"Kael, you’re right," I said evenly, without a ripple in my tone. "Don’t worry. I won’t bother you anymore."

"Enough!" he snapped, cutting me off impatiently. "Drop the act. You won’t bother me? Do you even believe that yourself?"

I didn’t respond. Instead, I stood, walked past him, and headed out to finish my final preparations.

He stood there, watching me leave, his expression shifting between anger and disbelief.

The next day, I ran into Mira.

Around her neck was a delicate necklace. It was his mother’s keepsake, the one he once said would only ever be given to his future Luna.

She deliberately stepped in front of me, gently brushing her fingers over the necklace. Her face carried undisguised pride and satisfaction, her voice soft but cutting.

"Talia, look. Kael gave me this. He said only I deserve to wear it. I am the only one he truly accepts as his mate."

If this had been my past life, the sight alone would have shattered me. I would have been unable to breathe. I would have broken down completely.

I merely glanced at it, my voice flat. "Congratulations."

The smugness on Mira’s face froze instantly. All the taunts and provocations she had prepared died in her throat.

Not long after that, Kael had someone deliver a jewelry box to me. He said it was compensation for the broken moonstone. The packaging was crude and cheap. It was obvious it had been picked carelessly, without a second thought.

Mira happened to be there, smiling with feigned sweetness.

"Talia, Kael’s just been busy. That’s why he picked something so casually. If you want, I can help you choose something better."

I picked up the cheap box. Without even opening it, I walked straight to the balcony, raised my hand, and threw it hard into the trash below.

Nothing could replace my mother’s moonstone, and nothing could ever make up for what he had done to me.

One day, a young pup slipped into an abandoned ruin filled with traps set by rogue wolves and didn’t come back, even as night fell.At the border, night brought a sharp drop in temperature. Rogue wolves roamed freely, and traps lay everywhere. For a pup to spend the night out there, it was almost certain death. The entire relief station mobilized, searching frantically. My heart pounded with urgency. Ignoring everyone’s attempts to stop me, I grabbed a flashlight and rushed toward the ruins."Talia, it’s too dangerous!" Damien caught my hand, concern in his eyes. "I’ll go. You stay here."However, I didn’t listen."I’m going with you."Two voices spoke at the same time. One was Damien. The other was Kael. The three of us charged into the ruins. It was pitch black. Only the beams of our flashlights cut through the darkness. The ground beneath us was littered with debris and hidden traps. One wrong step meant death.Suddenly, my foot slipped. I lost my balance and fell straigh

That evening, I had just finished an eight-hour surgery. Exhausted, I stepped out of the medical tent and ran straight into someone.Kael.He looked worn and travel-stained, his eyes bloodshot. The pride and polish of an Alpha were completely gone. When he saw me, it was as if he had found his last lifeline. He rushed forward, reaching for my hand.I instinctively stepped back, avoiding his touch. His hand froze midair. Carefully, he pulled something from his coat. It was the repaired moonstone. He held it out to me with both hands. It was flawless again. Under the moonlight, it glowed softly, exactly the same as when my mother had given it to me."Talia…" His voice was hoarse, almost breaking. Tears welled up instantly. "I’m sorry. I know I was wrong. I know everything now…"Mira’s scheme… what happened to your mother… I’ve investigated it all. She’s already been punished—imprisoned by the pack for life!"Look at the moonstone. I fixed it. I brought it back to you. Can we… st

He lost his mind. He rushed out of the room, determined to find a way to repair the moonstone."I just want it restored. No matter what you want, I’ll give it to you!" Kael grabbed Corvin Hobbs, the craftsman’s hand, his eyes bloodshot, and his voice hoarse.Corvin looked at the shattered fragments, his expression troubled. "Alpha, the damage to this moonstone is too severe. It’s almost impossible to repair…""I don’t care!" Kael roared. "It has to be fixed! No matter the cost!"He stayed in the workshop for three nights with no sleep, food, or rest. His eyes never left the fragments, as if he were afraid of missing even the smallest detail.Three days later, when the moonstone, which was restored to flawless perfection, was placed before him again, Kael lifted it carefully and pressed it against his chest. As if Talia had returned.…When I arrived at the border, I walked straight into a small-scale rogue wolf attack.Smoke filled the air. Ruins stretched in every direction.

He rushed down from the stage and strode straight to my father, his voice trembling despite himself."Where’s Talia? Where is she?"Father looked at him, his tone laced with mockery. "Kael, haven’t you always looked down on her? You should be happy."Talia stepped aside for you. She’s already gone to the border herself. From now on, you and Mira are a match made in heaven."Kael stood frozen, as if struck by lightning. A chill spread through his entire body.He had always believed I was just playing games. He figured that I was pretending to pull away but would come back. He thought I would definitely show up at the mating ceremony. He had never once considered that I had truly left.In that moment, a wave of panic unlike anything he had ever felt surged over him, swallowing him whole. The mating ceremony collapsed into farce.Kael abandoned the entire hall of guests, left behind a stunned Mira, and rushed home."Find her!" he barked at his Beta. "Go now! Find out exactly wher

Mira’s face went pale in an instant. She trembled with anger, yet didn’t dare lash out. She could only stand there, watching me.I knew exactly what she would do next. She would run to Kael, cry to him, and tell him I was arrogant, that I had trampled all over his goodwill.I didn’t care. I had already prepared everything and could leave at any time.I would go to the border to help those injured wolves who, like me, had been hurt and left with nothing. I would find myself again.Three days later, the ceremonial rite arrived. Every year, our pack held a grand ritual. This was the most solemn and sacred event of the entire tribe.Father sent someone to notify me that I had to attend. He said this would be my formal appearance before taking over the pack’s charitable relief efforts, so I could not be absent.I didn’t want to go, but I also knew this was my responsibility—as the sole heir of the pack.I changed into a simple, neutral-colored dress. I wore no jewelry, only keeping t
