Chapter 4

Author: Two Nine
"By the way," Eric said, "the mine acquisition is proceeding as planned. Irina is doing quite well, so I hope to have her temporarily take over your other duties as well, not just the procurement part. This would be a good chance for you to take a break and relax. What do you think?"

He stared at me intently, waiting for my response.

On the surface, it sounded like he was asking me for my opinion, but I knew that he had likely already written out the official order.

"I have no objections."

Eric's expression visibly faltered for a moment.

In the past, every time he wanted to hand my duties to Irina, I would fight back with budgets, data, and risk assessments.

However, this time, I hadn't done anything like that.

He regained his composure soon enough. "Great. Since you're meant to relax, I'll assign you to some light-duty records review work for now."

To put it simply, that would mean I would be in charge of reviewing old contracts and cross-checking archived documents.

This move wasn't actually meant to let me take a temporary break. What Eric was actually doing was taking away my achievements, then my authority.

Bit by bit, he was trying to strip me of everything, turning me into nothing but a trophy mate.

"It's just temporary," he added. "Once you feel that you've rested enough, I'll reinstate your authority."

"Alright."

For several seconds, he merely stared at me. "Are you really agreeing to this?"

"Yes."

I had already submitted the mate bond termination contract to the Council of Elders, and it would take effect two days from now. He could dump me anywhere he wanted—it didn't matter anymore.

Completely unaware of my real thoughts, Eric simply assumed that my silence meant that I had surrendered. He thought that I had finally accepted that loving an Alpha meant submitting to him and obeying his every word.

"Then it's settled. Tomorrow, you'll move to the archive room. Irina needs a bigger office to meet with the Alliance ambassador."

Back when I had told him that I was staying back, he had handed the key to this office to me. He had personally decorated it for me, so everything inside had been office supplies suited to my habits.

"Freya, this office will forever be yours."

Yet now, he had handed it over to Irina, just like that.

"Okay."

As Eric got to his feet, his gaze landed on my bookshelf. "Where's the Moon Goddess Statue I gave you?"

That statue had been a gift from him after we signed our very first trade agreement. The words "It starts here" had been carved into the bottom.

I used to place it in the most visible spot in the office. Every time Eric disappointed me, I would look at it and remind myself of how we had once endured the most difficult times together.

Eric used to tease me for placing so much importance on it, saying that he had simply found a random craftsman to make it for him, yet I treated it like the most precious treasure in the world. He thought it was very childish of me.

However, the moment it was gone from its usual place, he immediately noticed.

"It fell and shattered," I replied.

His gaze darted toward the floor, sweeping it carefully. "Have you cleaned up all the shards?"

"Yeah."

"Get someone to check the floor thoroughly. Any shards you might've missed could accidentally injure someone."

My compliance seemed to have put him in a good mood, for his tone was noticeably less harsh than usual. It almost sounded like he was concerned about me.

However, the one sitting in this office tomorrow would be Irina, so that concern was clearly not meant for me. It had never been.

After Eric left, I opened the bottom-most drawer of my desk.

The statue, carved out of moonstone, hadn't actually shattered. I would be leaving it behind when I leave two days from now.

I used to think that, if nothing else, at least our home would be the one thing that belonged to me and Eric alone.

Yet, one month ago, I returned home early, only to discover several boxes of some herbal concoction in our fridge. Every time I caught a whiff of the smell, it made me gag in disgust.

As it turned out, Irina had a habit of drinking one of them every morning.

I hadn't expected that another woman's personal habit would actually end up appearing in my fridge, in my home.

When I had asked Eric about it, he had said that Irina would occasionally come over to discuss work with him. Upon hearing that, I had decided to check the house access logs.

What I had discovered was that in the past two months, she had entered our home 11 times.

I hadn't been home for seven of those times.

"Don't bother," I said before holding my appointment letter up to the camera and pointing to a number printed on it. "I'm serving a five-year term, and the Alliance has already approved my residency permit. I'm not going back there, and I'm certainly not going to see you."Eric stared at the number on the document. The ring slipped from his hand and fell with a sharp clink."So, you planned all of this from the very start?""That's right.""So, none of this was ever just a scare tactic to trick me?""Of course not. I made up my mind long ago," I said before dropping the call and blocking Eric's new number.…A month later, the results of the Alliance's on-site investigation into the Frostclaw pack came in. It was confirmed that the pack had falsified information on its application. Therefore, their application for an inter-species trade license was denied, and I was the one who signed the denial. That same day, a crisis hit the mine, too. The mining crew had dug deep into the m

I settled into my work at the Alliance even faster than I expected. During all those years with the Frostclaw pack, I'd handled all the trade-related matters and had kept myself updated with the Alliance's trade regulations.I pulled up the Frostclaw pack's trade records from the past three years and compared them line by line with the records kept by the Alliance. The more I checked, the more problems I found. It wasn't just that several figures involving the pack's resources differed from the internal records I remembered seeing in the past. Even the trade volume listed in the application didn't match the figures reported by the other packs that had traded with the Frostclaw pack.Someone had tampered with information presented in the application.Withholding approval for the application, I compiled my concerns into a report and submitted it to the Alliance. I specifically requested that the Frostclaw pack resubmit its application and undergo an on-site inspection. After reading

"Suit yourself," I said as I looked Eric in the eye, my expression calm. "That's just a copy of the appointment letter anyway. If you want to tear it up, you can print as many copies as you like and tear them all to shreds."For the first time, Eric looked helpless and uncertain. All he could do was use his physical advantage as the Alpha to block the door with his large frame, making sure I couldn't get past him.Seeing that, I immediately called the Alliance."Hello, this is Freya Brandt, the newly appointed head of the Trade Analysis Department. Someone is attempting to restrict my freedom of movement. He's—"Eric's expression stiffened."Freya! Are you seriously doing this?" he confronted me in disbelief. "We've spent so many years together, yet you're trying to destroy me?"The Silvermoon Alliance symbolized peace between humans and werewolves. If word got out that he had tried to forcefully restrain someone from the Alliance, someone could very well interpret his actions as

Eric stared at the mate bond termination contract on his desk as though he couldn't understand what he was reading. Meanwhile, Irina's eyes lit up, and she could barely hide the smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She quickly lowered her head, but I caught her reaction anyway."Freya! How could you be so impulsive?" Irina exclaimed, her tone so sincere that anyone would have thought she genuinely wanted to help Eric and me patch things up. "You and Eric had to go through so much before you got to be together. How could you—""Get out," Eric interrupted.I turned to leave, and Irina's eyes flashed with mockery. However, the next second, someone grabbed me by the wrist."I wasn't talking to you." Eric turned to Irina, who stood there in confusion. "Irina, get out."Irina's expression stiffened. "But—""No buts." Eric's voice had turned icy. With no choice but to swallow her words back down, Irina bit her lip before forcing out a smile."Oh, alright. But you two need to sta

"Calm down, Eric." Irina stepped closer and rested a hand on his arm. "Freya's only behaving like this because she cares too much about you."Then she turned to me. "The clasp on my necklace came undone. Eric was just helping me fasten it. We're meeting with the envoy from the Alliance tonight. I have to make sure I look presentable."Her tone softened, as though she were speaking to some petulant child. "Please don't misunderstand, Freya. We're just handling official business. That's all."She had crossed the boundaries she should have respected with my mate, but she was now telling me not to make a big deal out of it. I didn't want to say anything more. Eric, however, took my silence as an admission of guilt."There are rules in the pack," he said to me. "You entered my office without permission. From now on, you're suspended from all your duties. You don't need to report to the office anymore."Eric, the Alpha who'd turned a blind eye to Irina crossing the line time and time ag

Bringing the access logs to Eric, I had confronted him about it.In response, he showed me some surveillance footage, each one showing Irina entering our home with some documents."She lives near here, so it's much more convenient to come over and discuss work matters face to face.""Why didn't anyone tell me about this?""Because this is also my home. I don't need the Luna's permission to bring in a packmate to discuss official pack business."He then berated me for checking the access logs and rifling through another's personal things. Besides that, he accused me of being too suspicious and paranoid. From then on, the frequency at which he brought Irina home increased. Instead of reassuring me, he deliberately pushed my limits, time and again. It was almost as though he were forcing me to fight back just so he could get the chance to punish me once more.Strictly speaking, I had no evidence to prove that they were having an illicit affair. Every time Irina came, she always car
