Chapter 3

Author: Two Nine
I had slipped the mate bond termination contract among the confirmation papers for Irina's mine acquisition plan the day Irina and Eric had departed for the mine.

At the time, Eric had been in such a hurry to leave that he hadn't even bothered reading through the contents carefully before signing them all.

The next morning, the Council of Elders had told me that the bond dissolution would be processed and finalised within ten days.

That was seven days ago, so there were only three days left.

Sighing in relief, I called Anya Henderson, my adoptive mother. She was also currently one of the seven permanent members of the Silvermoon Alliance's governing council.

The Alliance's territory was an agreed-upon neutral ground after the humans and werewolves signed a peace treaty, so Eric's influence wouldn't be able to reach me there.

Three years ago, the Alliance had invited me to head the Trade Analysis Department. However, Eric had only just inherited the Frostclaw pack at the time and told me that he needed me. Thus, I had rejected the Alliance's offer and stayed behind to help him overhaul the pack's affairs from the ground up.

Anya had warned me, "Even if he's your fated mate, it won't be easy for a human to gain a standing in a werewolf pack. It's still not too late for you to leave now."

Since I had deeply believed in Eric then, I had ignored her advice.

Now, I wanted nothing more than to change the choice I had made three years ago.

"Freya." Anya was silent for a long while before she finally spoke. "Are you sure that you won't stay behind for his sake again this time?"

"I'm sure. Besides, he's already signed the termination contract."

"What termination contract?" a voice asked from the doorway.

I turned around, only to see Eric standing by the door to the study, a frown on his face as he stared at me.

Before I could say anything, his phone lit up with a message.

He glanced down and read the message quickly, his lips curving up slightly.

When he looked back at me, however, the smile had completely vanished, along with his suspicion.

"Are you still handling work at this late hour?"

He had clearly forgotten what he had overheard just now.

Ending the call, I set my phone down. "Just some stuff to do with the mine acquisition."

Eric swept a glance over the documents on my desk. "Are you still not done with handing over the acquisition authority to Irina?"

"Soon."

The frown on his face deepened. "You've been rather distracted lately and not putting your entire focus into work. Irina is officially taking over tomorrow. Don't deliberately delay things just because you don't want to hand things over to her."

I didn't explain myself.

Seeing that, he turned and returned to our bedroom. Several minutes later, his laughter drifted out from behind the closed door.

He was sending Irina voice messages, and when he laughed, it sounded so relaxed and earnest.

I couldn't even remember when the last time he had directed such a laugh toward me was.

Shutting the study room door, I began flipping through the Alliance's trade legislations from the past three years.

Although I had grown up there, it had been a long time since I left the Alliance. I would need to relearn everything—the conditions of the various packs, the new trade legislations, and the interspecies trade provisions.

For the first time in years, I shifted my attention from Eric and focused back on myself.

"What is that? Trade legislations?"

I hadn't heard Eric come back.

He picked up a document, flipping through a few pages before a laugh burst from his lips. "These are way beyond the scope of just our pack, and it involves more races than just the werewolves. Do you even understand what you're reading?"

The very first time the Frostclaw pack established trade relations with the other packs, I had been the one to handle the negotiations.

However, it seemed like Eric had long since forgotten that the flourishing trade the Frostclaw pack currently enjoyed was built on my analysis and negotiations. To him, all that I had achieved was simply luck.

I gathered the scattered papers and stacked them in a neat pile. "I'm just reading them for fun."

Eric set down the document he was holding, not asking any more questions.

What he didn't know was that, three days from now, I would become the youngest-ever Head of the Trade Analysis Department in the history of the Alliance.

As for the interspecies trade license that he had been after for years?

That would be the first matter I handled after taking office.

"Don't bother," I said before holding my appointment letter up to the camera and pointing to a number printed on it. "I'm serving a five-year term, and the Alliance has already approved my residency permit. I'm not going back there, and I'm certainly not going to see you."Eric stared at the number on the document. The ring slipped from his hand and fell with a sharp clink."So, you planned all of this from the very start?""That's right.""So, none of this was ever just a scare tactic to trick me?""Of course not. I made up my mind long ago," I said before dropping the call and blocking Eric's new number.…A month later, the results of the Alliance's on-site investigation into the Frostclaw pack came in. It was confirmed that the pack had falsified information on its application. Therefore, their application for an inter-species trade license was denied, and I was the one who signed the denial. That same day, a crisis hit the mine, too. The mining crew had dug deep into the m

I settled into my work at the Alliance even faster than I expected. During all those years with the Frostclaw pack, I'd handled all the trade-related matters and had kept myself updated with the Alliance's trade regulations.I pulled up the Frostclaw pack's trade records from the past three years and compared them line by line with the records kept by the Alliance. The more I checked, the more problems I found. It wasn't just that several figures involving the pack's resources differed from the internal records I remembered seeing in the past. Even the trade volume listed in the application didn't match the figures reported by the other packs that had traded with the Frostclaw pack.Someone had tampered with information presented in the application.Withholding approval for the application, I compiled my concerns into a report and submitted it to the Alliance. I specifically requested that the Frostclaw pack resubmit its application and undergo an on-site inspection. After reading

"Suit yourself," I said as I looked Eric in the eye, my expression calm. "That's just a copy of the appointment letter anyway. If you want to tear it up, you can print as many copies as you like and tear them all to shreds."For the first time, Eric looked helpless and uncertain. All he could do was use his physical advantage as the Alpha to block the door with his large frame, making sure I couldn't get past him.Seeing that, I immediately called the Alliance."Hello, this is Freya Brandt, the newly appointed head of the Trade Analysis Department. Someone is attempting to restrict my freedom of movement. He's—"Eric's expression stiffened."Freya! Are you seriously doing this?" he confronted me in disbelief. "We've spent so many years together, yet you're trying to destroy me?"The Silvermoon Alliance symbolized peace between humans and werewolves. If word got out that he had tried to forcefully restrain someone from the Alliance, someone could very well interpret his actions as

Eric stared at the mate bond termination contract on his desk as though he couldn't understand what he was reading. Meanwhile, Irina's eyes lit up, and she could barely hide the smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She quickly lowered her head, but I caught her reaction anyway."Freya! How could you be so impulsive?" Irina exclaimed, her tone so sincere that anyone would have thought she genuinely wanted to help Eric and me patch things up. "You and Eric had to go through so much before you got to be together. How could you—""Get out," Eric interrupted.I turned to leave, and Irina's eyes flashed with mockery. However, the next second, someone grabbed me by the wrist."I wasn't talking to you." Eric turned to Irina, who stood there in confusion. "Irina, get out."Irina's expression stiffened. "But—""No buts." Eric's voice had turned icy. With no choice but to swallow her words back down, Irina bit her lip before forcing out a smile."Oh, alright. But you two need to sta

"Calm down, Eric." Irina stepped closer and rested a hand on his arm. "Freya's only behaving like this because she cares too much about you."Then she turned to me. "The clasp on my necklace came undone. Eric was just helping me fasten it. We're meeting with the envoy from the Alliance tonight. I have to make sure I look presentable."Her tone softened, as though she were speaking to some petulant child. "Please don't misunderstand, Freya. We're just handling official business. That's all."She had crossed the boundaries she should have respected with my mate, but she was now telling me not to make a big deal out of it. I didn't want to say anything more. Eric, however, took my silence as an admission of guilt."There are rules in the pack," he said to me. "You entered my office without permission. From now on, you're suspended from all your duties. You don't need to report to the office anymore."Eric, the Alpha who'd turned a blind eye to Irina crossing the line time and time ag

Bringing the access logs to Eric, I had confronted him about it.In response, he showed me some surveillance footage, each one showing Irina entering our home with some documents."She lives near here, so it's much more convenient to come over and discuss work matters face to face.""Why didn't anyone tell me about this?""Because this is also my home. I don't need the Luna's permission to bring in a packmate to discuss official pack business."He then berated me for checking the access logs and rifling through another's personal things. Besides that, he accused me of being too suspicious and paranoid. From then on, the frequency at which he brought Irina home increased. Instead of reassuring me, he deliberately pushed my limits, time and again. It was almost as though he were forcing me to fight back just so he could get the chance to punish me once more.Strictly speaking, I had no evidence to prove that they were having an illicit affair. Every time Irina came, she always car
