Chapter 5

Author: Two Nine
Bringing the access logs to Eric, I had confronted him about it.

In response, he showed me some surveillance footage, each one showing Irina entering our home with some documents.

"She lives near here, so it's much more convenient to come over and discuss work matters face to face."

"Why didn't anyone tell me about this?"

"Because this is also my home. I don't need the Luna's permission to bring in a packmate to discuss official pack business."

He then berated me for checking the access logs and rifling through another's personal things. Besides that, he accused me of being too suspicious and paranoid.

From then on, the frequency at which he brought Irina home increased. Instead of reassuring me, he deliberately pushed my limits, time and again. It was almost as though he were forcing me to fight back just so he could get the chance to punish me once more.

Strictly speaking, I had no evidence to prove that they were having an illicit affair. Every time Irina came, she always carried some sort of document. As for those late-night meetings, there always seemed to be a reason for those too.

At one point, I even began to doubt myself. Perhaps I really had let my imagination run wild. Maybe the problem truly lay with me.

If I had focused half the energy and effort I had spent on analyzing their every moment together on my own career, I would've likely progressed much further in life than now.

…

The next morning, Eric made an official announcement that Irina would be temporarily taking over all my duties, while I would only be in charge of reviewing the records.

Everyone was waiting for me to object, but I simply placed the access seal and all completed dossiers on Irina's desk.

Seeing that, Eric nodded in satisfaction.

He thought that he had finally broken me in, that he finally had a magnanimous, obedient Luna who obeyed his every wish.

While they were celebrating Irina's promotion, I was planning my departure.

While they spent time entertaining the Alliance's ambassador, I finished packing up my belongings.

While they gave a speech about their plans for the pack's future, I completed the final handover procedures.

Their celebration was only just beginning, but for me, my time there was finally ending.

Two days later, on my very last day at the Frostclaw pack, I was completing the final steps for the dissolution of our mate bond.

The administrative officer, Rachel Foster, stopped me before I could leave. "Before you go, you need to drop by the Alpha's office. He said that he wants to see you."

I was about to refuse, but then it occurred to me that this might be the last time I would ever see Eric again after tonight.

A proper goodbye was the least I could give after three years together.

The door to Eric's office was slightly ajar. Through the crack, I could see Irina, dressed in a champagne gown as she stood before a full-length mirror. Her hair had been swept over one shoulder, revealing the bare skin at the back of her neck.

Eric was behind her, attempting to help her put on a necklace.

For an Alpha and his Beta, they were much too close to each other, with hardly any distance between their bodies.

Instead of going in, I turned to leave.

However, Irina caught sight of me through the mirror. "Freya?"

Eric looked over his shoulder. The moment he spotted me, the smile on his face vanished. "Who gave you permission to enter?"

I stopped in my tracks.

This was a new rule he had set one month ago—no one was allowed to enter his office without a prior appointment.

I had assumed that this didn't apply to the Luna.

"Rachel said that you wanted to see me."

Eric used the intercom to summon Rachel into his office. "Did you tell her to come in here?"

Rachel was well aware that Irina held a special place in their Alpha's heart and had special privileges. She looked at Eric, then at Irina. "I… I don't remember."

By now, everyone in the pack had learned one important fact—speaking the truth on my behalf would lead to unfortunate consequences, while lying for Irina wouldn't.

Eric sneered, "So, now you're even keeping tabs on me and Irina using those closest to me?"

"I'm not."

"Still lying?" Eric stalked closer to me, his expression filled with disappointment. "Since you seem to lack any trust in me, should I just hand you all the surveillance footage of every single camera in the entire pack? Or maybe you should just order the guards to give a detailed report on every single person I've met and the words I've said?"

Once again, he had overstepped the boundaries, yet here he was, playing the morally superior character and turning me into the one at fault again.

Behind him, Irina ducked her head, but I still caught the smirk curving her lips.

"Don't bother," I said before holding my appointment letter up to the camera and pointing to a number printed on it. "I'm serving a five-year term, and the Alliance has already approved my residency permit. I'm not going back there, and I'm certainly not going to see you."Eric stared at the number on the document. The ring slipped from his hand and fell with a sharp clink."So, you planned all of this from the very start?""That's right.""So, none of this was ever just a scare tactic to trick me?""Of course not. I made up my mind long ago," I said before dropping the call and blocking Eric's new number.…A month later, the results of the Alliance's on-site investigation into the Frostclaw pack came in. It was confirmed that the pack had falsified information on its application. Therefore, their application for an inter-species trade license was denied, and I was the one who signed the denial. That same day, a crisis hit the mine, too. The mining crew had dug deep into the m

I settled into my work at the Alliance even faster than I expected. During all those years with the Frostclaw pack, I'd handled all the trade-related matters and had kept myself updated with the Alliance's trade regulations.I pulled up the Frostclaw pack's trade records from the past three years and compared them line by line with the records kept by the Alliance. The more I checked, the more problems I found. It wasn't just that several figures involving the pack's resources differed from the internal records I remembered seeing in the past. Even the trade volume listed in the application didn't match the figures reported by the other packs that had traded with the Frostclaw pack.Someone had tampered with information presented in the application.Withholding approval for the application, I compiled my concerns into a report and submitted it to the Alliance. I specifically requested that the Frostclaw pack resubmit its application and undergo an on-site inspection. After reading

"Suit yourself," I said as I looked Eric in the eye, my expression calm. "That's just a copy of the appointment letter anyway. If you want to tear it up, you can print as many copies as you like and tear them all to shreds."For the first time, Eric looked helpless and uncertain. All he could do was use his physical advantage as the Alpha to block the door with his large frame, making sure I couldn't get past him.Seeing that, I immediately called the Alliance."Hello, this is Freya Brandt, the newly appointed head of the Trade Analysis Department. Someone is attempting to restrict my freedom of movement. He's—"Eric's expression stiffened."Freya! Are you seriously doing this?" he confronted me in disbelief. "We've spent so many years together, yet you're trying to destroy me?"The Silvermoon Alliance symbolized peace between humans and werewolves. If word got out that he had tried to forcefully restrain someone from the Alliance, someone could very well interpret his actions as

Eric stared at the mate bond termination contract on his desk as though he couldn't understand what he was reading. Meanwhile, Irina's eyes lit up, and she could barely hide the smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She quickly lowered her head, but I caught her reaction anyway."Freya! How could you be so impulsive?" Irina exclaimed, her tone so sincere that anyone would have thought she genuinely wanted to help Eric and me patch things up. "You and Eric had to go through so much before you got to be together. How could you—""Get out," Eric interrupted.I turned to leave, and Irina's eyes flashed with mockery. However, the next second, someone grabbed me by the wrist."I wasn't talking to you." Eric turned to Irina, who stood there in confusion. "Irina, get out."Irina's expression stiffened. "But—""No buts." Eric's voice had turned icy. With no choice but to swallow her words back down, Irina bit her lip before forcing out a smile."Oh, alright. But you two need to sta

"Calm down, Eric." Irina stepped closer and rested a hand on his arm. "Freya's only behaving like this because she cares too much about you."Then she turned to me. "The clasp on my necklace came undone. Eric was just helping me fasten it. We're meeting with the envoy from the Alliance tonight. I have to make sure I look presentable."Her tone softened, as though she were speaking to some petulant child. "Please don't misunderstand, Freya. We're just handling official business. That's all."She had crossed the boundaries she should have respected with my mate, but she was now telling me not to make a big deal out of it. I didn't want to say anything more. Eric, however, took my silence as an admission of guilt."There are rules in the pack," he said to me. "You entered my office without permission. From now on, you're suspended from all your duties. You don't need to report to the office anymore."Eric, the Alpha who'd turned a blind eye to Irina crossing the line time and time ag
