Willow Baker POV
Swallowing, I watched him unfold his hands and tap the table with his index finger. "So you're claiming to have given birth to my child. Do you know how many women have claimed such a thing?"
I wouldn't be surprised if there were a fair number of women. Even if he had demon blood, there would always be people who didn't care about such things. They either treated people based on their actions or cared only about what they could gain from such a person. I was a bit of both.
"You've already seen her for yourself. You can't deny it," I said as I glanced down at her. "She has black hair and black eyes like you do."
"Are you so certain that it's me?" he asked as he raised an eyebrow.
What a ridiculous question. "Do you even have to ask?"
His silence was his answer, and I could only wait to see how he would respond.
Would he demand I leave her with him before sendin
Maverick Peterson POV Staring at my hand, I couldn't help thinking that she was tiny. How did such a fragile and delicate creature give birth to my child? Recalling how she fought off the other werewolves and how she stared right into my eyes despite her fears, I mentally crossed off delicate. That was no delicate flower or toothless pup. If nurtured correctly, she would be a formidable member of our family and pack. "Master Maverick," greeted my knights as I passed them to observe the prisoners. Most of them were still alive, though with varying degrees of injuries. One in particular had clearly been healed and beaten numerous times. At my questioning stare, Timothy was quick to answer, "His words displeased the men." My men normally wouldn't be moved by this sort of thing. What happened earlier was an exception. To hear that they treated the prisoner worse than any criminal they had dealt with before did not bode well. They stood right behind me as I stepped toward the prison
Willow Baker POV'You jinxed us.''Sorry, I didn't seriously think it would turn out like this.'Who would have thought that first thing in the morning, I would be greeted by the current Grand Duchess, Maverick's mother. I didn't even have time to mentally prepare myself before I was forced to sit down and have breakfast with her.Not to mention I was severely underdressed. I hadn't exactly packed to impress the mother of the father of my baby. All I had were the simple dresses Sheila had put into my bag, and said bags were still confiscated. With no other options, I was forced to wear what I had been wearing last night, which was a grimy shirt and torn pants. Seeing how beautiful she was in the long undoubtedly expensive purple dress had me dying on the inside.Glancing at the empty seats at the long table, I couldn't decide whether or not it was a good thing that Mave
Willow Baker POVScrambling, I grabbed the cup of water—thankfully, it was water and not alcohol or some strange beverage that only demon blooded werewolves drank—off the table. Once I drained the cup, I gasped for air. The Grand Duchess paid me no mind as she was focused on Asa, which was great for me as it gave me time to recover from that unexpected request.'Well, she certainly doesn't beat around the bush."'No kidding.'I didn't think the first thing the Grand Duchess would want from me was another child. We already had Asa, who I assumed would be the heir unless stated otherwise. There was no reason for us to have another one, especially so soon. Raising Asa would be difficult enough on its own.In my previous life, she had seemed like a dear, and she had eventually become well-behaved when I held her. However, I hadn't spent as much time with her in the beginni
Maverick Peterson POV"Your chosen bride isn't what I expected." At the sound of my mother's voice, I looked up from the paperwork and saw her striding into the room without announcing herself. "I never thought that was your type.""What do you mean, mother?" I asked as I returned to my work.Even with magic, my father wouldn't be able to receive my message until a few days later. Until then, I would have to handle the matter regarding the men and women under my care. Unfortunately, most of the men had died during the interrogation, despite our best efforts. While I didn't blame my men for reacting poorly to the toxic verbatim that came pouring out of their filthy mouths, I couldn't let them go unpunished. They were trained knights of the Peterson family and members of the Moonshine Pack. Their behavior reflected poorly on me as the future leader of both. What would people think when they heard pri
Willow Baker POV'Well that didn't go too badly.''Easy for you to say. You didn't do any talking.'We had spent the better part of the morning talking about anything and everything. Nothing was sacred. She even pressed me for specifics about my pregnancy, making me feel as if she was trying to figure out what was wrong with me.'At least that's out of the way right?'Sighing, I took a good look at my surroundings and took in the sight of the lavish rugs I was stepping on with my grimy shoes to the tasteful decorations that screamed wealth. After the interrogation, the Grand Duchess had said we were allowed to explore the place when she returned Asa to me. Then she left to personally do whatever the Grand Duchesses did. From the corner of my eyes, I peered at the two servants trailing behind me. They had been assigned to watch after us and aid us in whatever we
Willow Baker POVI wondered if the reason Maverick wanted to spend time with me was to discuss the details of our arrangement. Otherwise, I had no clue why he was taking time out of his day to be with me, especially since he should be very busy at the moment."Walk with me," he commanded as he started to walk away in a different direction from the servants and knights.Unable to disobey, I trailed after him, trying to keep up with his long strides. I knew he was tall, but I hadn't realized how much taller he was. Looking at his broad back, I waited for him to say something, but he remained silent as if waiting for me to speak first.'What should I say?''Why don't you just ask him about Sheila and Rickey? That should be the least awkward subject to talk about.'"Grand, I mean, Lord, uh, Sir Peterson—" I stumbled over my words, trying to find the proper way to addr
Willow Baker POVMaverick remained silent, as if contemplating his words. I couldn't help feeling uneasy about what he wanted to say.Was it something truly horrible that he had trouble finding the words, and why couldn't I remember it?"Do you remember the first time we met?" he settled on.I blinked before saying, "Yes?"Why was he bringing it up now?I had thought he wanted to talk about the reason why he had apologized to me.He grimaced as he slowly said, "I was under the impression you willingly offered yourself to me that night."Then it clicked as I made a small noise. So that was why he was apologizing to me. It never occurred to me that would be what he had been talking about, but considering how few interactions we had with one another, I shouldn't have been surprised. With him apologizing, I couldn't help wondering why. He sounded so... I wasn
Maverick Peterson POV'You're lucky she rejected your offer, or else you would be missing an important part of yourself."'I know that, but she had every right to.'Even if my mother hadn't told me to offer that option to her, I would have offered her some kind of compensation. It didn't change what happened, but it was the least I could do to make it up to her.'I can't believe one lapse in judgment snowballed into such a large mess.''Mother always did say that the smallest things can make the biggest changes.'Whatever fond emotion I normally felt thinking about things my mother had told me was absent.I couldn't stop thinking about how Willow reacted to my apology. It was as if she had never thought I would ever apologize, and what happened to her was an eve
