Willow Baker POV
One Week Later
'Finally. I thought we would never leave that damn place.'
I didn't reprimand her for her language. She wasn't wrong. It had taken an extra week before I could sneak away to visit Sheila and Asa. Even though I had warned them ahead of time, I'm certain that they were worried about me.
Well, at least Sheila and my baby, not Rickey.
Knocking on the door, I waited for Sheila to answer the door. The moment she laid eyes on me, she herded me inside as she patted me down and inspected me for injuries.
"Thank goodness." She breathed a sigh of relief when she found nothing wrong. "What happened?"
"I have something I need to tell you two," I said without hesitation.
Her small smile turned into a frown at my words, and she rushed to grab her husband. We settled into the living room as I held onto Asa.
Willow Baker POV"Now I think we should have a quick little chat before Sheila gets back," said Rickey. That's when I realized my error.Normally, he would avoid staying in the same room as me unless Sheila was there. Since he didn't like or trust me, he would always stick close by if he could. Now it was just the two of us, ignoring Asa who had no clue what was going on.He had purposely sent Sheila away for whatever he had planned. Nervously holding Asa close, I kept my eyes open for any hostile intent.Instead, he sat back down and clasped his hands together on the table."I don't like you, and you don't like me, but we both obviously care for Sheila." I wasn't sure where he was going with this and didn't lower my guard. "That's why I'm not going to point out that there's something suspicious about what you said."I tried to think of what he meant, but I couldn't come up wi
Willow Baker POVThree Months Later"Ready?" asked Rickey as he secured the backpack onto his back.I nodded my consent as I held Asa close to my chest. "They shouldn't suspect a thing for a couple of days. It should give us a head start."Looking at me and the baby, he said, "We'll need it."He wasn't wrong. With a baby, we couldn't travel in our wolf forms, and since none of us had access to magic which could only be used by those with strong demon or angel blood, we had to settle for traveling by foot. It was really unfortunate that there were no other ways for us to travel easier or faster.I could only hope that Rose remained duped until we crossed the border, but the chances of that happening were slim. If my previous life is any indication, she would find out sooner rather than later. It had been a struggle to find the right time to leave. No
Several Days LaterA vase shattered as it hit the wall. "Where did that bitch go?" Rose demanded. One of the servants who was unfortunate enough to be there to deal with their mistress's rage dared to say, "W-we don't know, miss."She earned a slap for her troubles. Luckily for her, it was only a slap to the cheek instead of the whip.Rose turned away from her servants as she gnawed on her thumb. "She must have been secretly mocking me behind my back. How dare she leave without my permission. How did she even run off without anyone finding out?"The only reason she had allowed an unsightly thing near her was to make herself shine brighter. When they stood side by side which never happened, it was obvious who the better looking woman was.She did have other reasons besides that for allowing her to be her slave. One of the most important criteria she had was that anyone who worked for her
Maverick Peterson POVInclining my head in greeting to the knights guarding the entrance to my father's study, I stepped inside to see papers stacked high on the table. At first glance, it would be easy to assume my father was absent, but it was simply the papers blocking him from view."Father, has there been any luck regarding the matter we spoke of?" I asked as I bowed slightly despite knowing he wouldn't see it."I'm afraid not," he sighed. "No one seems to know what it is we're dealing with. There's a possibility that it might be the work of someone with angel blood."Considering our options, I could see why my father and his contacts would make that assumption. Werewolves couldn't use magic, and if no one with demon blood could identify the magic used, that only left the angels. This, unfortunately, meant we had reached a dead end.
Willow Baker POVA Day Later"We're being followed," Rickey suddenly whispered.I resisted the urge to look around for signs of pursuers, but Sheila didn't have the same control and glanced anxiously for them.Considering how we hadn't been attacked yet, I could only assume there was still a fair amount of distance between us. That wouldn't last, though. Sooner or later, they would catch up to us, and we would have to fight back.Fortunately, Rickey had the foresight to teach me self-defense in the rare moments we had in between traveling.Unfortunately, I doubt I could do more than stall them. A few days of inconsistent training were no match for those who trained every day without fail. I wasn't sure about Sheila, but Rickey would have no problems.I grinded my teeth. This was so frustrating. The border wasn't that far away, but the cha
Maverick Peterson POVI slammed my teacup onto the tray, cracking it and spilling its contents everywhere. The woman across from me flinched, and the teacup in her hands shook as she set it down."My apologies, something has come up that requires my attention. I'll have my servants escort you out," he said before he stormed off.'Did you sense that, Maverick?''Yes.'There were werewolves near the border by Prerana. The very border that they had been monitoring all these months for clues regarding the strange magic that had been used. Now our efforts were bearing fruit.Unfortunately, my father wasn't around. He had left the grand duchy to visit his friends in another country for advice. Whoever they were, they had chosen the right time to act if they wanted to avoid my father. They must have been wary of my father to wait this long.'If they t
Willow Baker POV'Ha, ha, ha! Nice going. You had one job, and that's what you say. Ha, ha, ha!''Will you stop laughing? You're not helping."My face was on fire as I groaned beneath the incredulous stares of everyone except Sheila. If I could, I would cover my face in shame and pretend none of this ever happened. It wasn't supposed to be like this. I had a plan for meeting and negotiating terms with Maverick, but now it was ruined. Nothing had turned out like I had planned. In fact, everything had gone wrong as soon as Rickey left us, and it wasn't even my fault. Rickey couldn't blame me for this. It was like those bastards had done it on purpose. After separating from Rickey, we had been in the clear with a straight line to freedom. Nothing was going to stop us when we had been jumped out of nowhere. I had no idea how they got around Rickey, but we were left with no choice exce
Willow Baker POVAsa had finally fallen asleep, leaving me with no distractions as I went over all my options again. I could still act like none of this happened and go with my original plan. My other option was to wing it and hope for the best.'Those aren't very good options.''I know. I'm drawing a blank here.''Well, think faster.''I'm trying here. It's not like I have experience with this kind of situation. I've never had to ask someone to marry me before.'Just thinking about it was surreal, no matter how many times I had thought about it in both my first life and my current one. If only Sheila was here, she could help me figure something out.Unfortunately, they had separated us, so I had no clue where she was or if she was okay. Maybe they were giving her the same treatment as me, but that was hopeful thinking on my part.
