Willow Baker POV
"Are you really sure you should be up so soon? You haven't fully recovered," said Sheila as she rocked Asa and hovered over me.
I smiled. Seeing her so full of life and worry, I had never been more grateful that the Moon Goddess gave me a second chance and allowed me to see her again. "I'm fine. I shouldn't impose."
"Leave her be. She's not a child, Sheila," said Rickey as he drank his coffee.
I pretended not to hear him. While I couldn't forgive him for trying to kill my baby in his pursuit for revenge, I knew that grief could drive people mad. Besides, I had already paid him back.
My hands shook in my lap as I recalled exactly what I did to him. I can smell his fresh blood scenting the air. His eyes were staring at me with such hatred as his life had been drained out of him.
"Willow?" The feeling of a hand on my shoulder startled me as I jerked away. Sheila's expression screamed worry. "I think you should rest. You don't look so good."
I placed my hand on hers as I said, "I can't. Rose will be wondering where I am."
If I remembered correctly, the birth had taken the whole day, and I had slept several hours afterwards. Sheila had said this was normal for the first baby, but Rose had been furious that I had disappeared on her.
Of course, I kept Asa's existence a secret.
My parents had lied to the Wright family that I was a virgin so I could serve them. Rose, the Wright family's only child and daughter, had insisted she didn't want whores stinking up the house. She claimed that a non-virgin would infect the place and prevent respectable werewolves from coming over.
They didn't even bother to check if I was a virgin. One look at me and Rose had determined that no one would want to touch me. She said I was too hideous, and that I was perfect to be their maid.
'If anyone's the whore, she is. I wouldn't be surprised if she was fucking a bunch of werewolves behind mommy and daddy's back.'
I snorted at Winter's comment.
This was another thing that had changed compared to the past. Winter and I had not gotten along at all. She hadn't been able to accept how I would submit myself to someone she thought was lesser. She howled and snarled at me to stand up for myself, but I had been so used to submitting to others that I saw no reason to.
When she saw that I wasn't going to change, she stopped talking to me completely. It had been lonely without her, and I filled the void by spending time with Asa. My final moments had been the first time I had heard from her in so long.
'Are you still going to go through with your previous plan? It didn't work last time.'
My original plan had been to cross the border and receive protection from the head of the family ruling the place.
'It's the best course of action. It only failed last time because I chose to stay for so long. If I had left as soon as I gave birth, then no one would have found out about her.'
It was impressive that I could even keep Asa's existence a secret. No one had seemed to realize I was pregnant even with my belly swelling. Rose had said I was eating too much food and took my meals away so I would lose weight. It didn't stop her from mocking me at every turn.
Since I couldn't bring her with me as it wouldn't be safe for her, I had to leave her with Sheila. Constantly going back and forth would have certainly drawn Rose's attention to the frequent trips. She must have noticed Asa's appearance during one of those trips.
Her appearance wasn't something we could exactly hide. If she had only black hair or only black eyes, then it wouldn't have been an issue. There were plenty of werewolves with black hair or black eyes. Only those with strong demon blood had both features.
Rose was right to assume that I must be the mother since neither Sheila nor Rickey had those features. Rickey's eyes were similar in color, but very dark brown was not the same as black.
I knew for sure I didn't have demon blood even though my hair and eye color were pretty dark. That didn't stop other werewolves from spitting in my direction.
It was also the reason why my parents fought. Neither of my parents had dark brown hair or dark brown eyes. They were both blonde, and my dad had dark blue eyes while my mom had light green eyes. It wasn't surprising that there were rumors that my mom had cheated on my dad.
If they were fated mates, no one will ever dare say that, but fated mates were rare. Only the truly fortunate would be assigned fated mates.
I shook my head of those thoughts. Right now wasn't the time to be thinking about the past. I needed to focus on my future with Asa.
If Asa was born just yesterday, that would mean I was about a year in the past. I had a lot of information I could use to barter with the head.
Last time, I was so desperate that I was willing to take the chance that he might just discard me and take my baby only. I was willing to do it to make sure she lived, but this time I wasn't going to let her go. If I had anything to say about it, we were going to live a long and happy life together.
The head was currently not the head and was unmarried. If he wanted to take over the family, he needed a wife and a child. That was where I came in. If I could get there and somehow find a way to speak with him, we could make a deal. On paper, I would be his wife and gain all the protections that came with it while he could become the head sooner.
Then, once I was certain of my place, I'd make sure to repay everyone for everything that happened in my first life.
Willow Baker POV"You ungrateful bitch, where were you? You were gone for two days," Rose shrieked into my ear as she yanked on my hair.I kept myself from flinching and answered, "I was feeling unwell, so I thought it was best not to stick around. I wouldn't want the young miss to get sick because of me."She shoved me aside with a sniff and studied my figure. "You finally lost weight, you pig. You must have made yourself sick by stuffing your face with food. That's what you get," she said with a high-pitched laugh.Remaining silent, I could feel my nails digging into the palms of my hands. Last time, I didn't have any difficulty letting her words flow past me. What I thought hadn't mattered I just needed to do as I was told. Now I wanted to slap her and pull on her hair to show her exactly what it felt like. I wasn't the only one she harassed, but I was her favorite punching bag. I never went against her, and no one would have cared if anything happened to me except for Sheila.'I s
Willow Baker POVOne Month LaterI never knew screwing people over would be so satisfying. No wonder people like Rose did it all the time. It was really satisfying watching the other servants squirm and suffer this past month at the hands of Rose.'I told you.''Hush you.'Since I had already knew firsthand several of their tricks, it was easy to turn their plans around. The best part was that no one knew that I knew what they were up to and was purposefully getting them punished. After all, I was just worthless Willow. The stupid werewolf who submitted to everyone regardless of status whether they were a purebred Alpha or a barely passable Omega, I would always bow my head and do whatever was asked of me. Nothing was too low for me to do.Which was why I was the last person for them to suspect of sowing chaos throughout the househ
Willow Baker POVOne Week Later'Finally. I thought we would never leave that damn place.'I didn't reprimand her for her language. She wasn't wrong. It had taken an extra week before I could sneak away to visit Sheila and Asa. Even though I had warned them ahead of time, I'm certain that they were worried about me.Well, at least Sheila and my baby, not Rickey.Knocking on the door, I waited for Sheila to answer the door. The moment she laid eyes on me, she herded me inside as she patted me down and inspected me for injuries."Thank goodness." She breathed a sigh of relief when she found nothing wrong. "What happened?""I have something I need to tell you two," I said without hesitation. Her small smile turned into a frown at my words, and she rushed to grab her husband. We settled into the living room as I held onto Asa.
Willow Baker POV"Now I think we should have a quick little chat before Sheila gets back," said Rickey. That's when I realized my error.Normally, he would avoid staying in the same room as me unless Sheila was there. Since he didn't like or trust me, he would always stick close by if he could. Now it was just the two of us, ignoring Asa who had no clue what was going on.He had purposely sent Sheila away for whatever he had planned. Nervously holding Asa close, I kept my eyes open for any hostile intent.Instead, he sat back down and clasped his hands together on the table."I don't like you, and you don't like me, but we both obviously care for Sheila." I wasn't sure where he was going with this and didn't lower my guard. "That's why I'm not going to point out that there's something suspicious about what you said."I tried to think of what he meant, but I couldn't come up wi
Willow Baker POVThree Months Later"Ready?" asked Rickey as he secured the backpack onto his back.I nodded my consent as I held Asa close to my chest. "They shouldn't suspect a thing for a couple of days. It should give us a head start."Looking at me and the baby, he said, "We'll need it."He wasn't wrong. With a baby, we couldn't travel in our wolf forms, and since none of us had access to magic which could only be used by those with strong demon or angel blood, we had to settle for traveling by foot. It was really unfortunate that there were no other ways for us to travel easier or faster.I could only hope that Rose remained duped until we crossed the border, but the chances of that happening were slim. If my previous life is any indication, she would find out sooner rather than later. It had been a struggle to find the right time to leave. No
Several Days LaterA vase shattered as it hit the wall. "Where did that bitch go?" Rose demanded. One of the servants who was unfortunate enough to be there to deal with their mistress's rage dared to say, "W-we don't know, miss."She earned a slap for her troubles. Luckily for her, it was only a slap to the cheek instead of the whip.Rose turned away from her servants as she gnawed on her thumb. "She must have been secretly mocking me behind my back. How dare she leave without my permission. How did she even run off without anyone finding out?"The only reason she had allowed an unsightly thing near her was to make herself shine brighter. When they stood side by side which never happened, it was obvious who the better looking woman was.She did have other reasons besides that for allowing her to be her slave. One of the most important criteria she had was that anyone who worked for her
Maverick Peterson POVInclining my head in greeting to the knights guarding the entrance to my father's study, I stepped inside to see papers stacked high on the table. At first glance, it would be easy to assume my father was absent, but it was simply the papers blocking him from view."Father, has there been any luck regarding the matter we spoke of?" I asked as I bowed slightly despite knowing he wouldn't see it."I'm afraid not," he sighed. "No one seems to know what it is we're dealing with. There's a possibility that it might be the work of someone with angel blood."Considering our options, I could see why my father and his contacts would make that assumption. Werewolves couldn't use magic, and if no one with demon blood could identify the magic used, that only left the angels. This, unfortunately, meant we had reached a dead end.
Willow Baker POVA Day Later"We're being followed," Rickey suddenly whispered.I resisted the urge to look around for signs of pursuers, but Sheila didn't have the same control and glanced anxiously for them.Considering how we hadn't been attacked yet, I could only assume there was still a fair amount of distance between us. That wouldn't last, though. Sooner or later, they would catch up to us, and we would have to fight back.Fortunately, Rickey had the foresight to teach me self-defense in the rare moments we had in between traveling.Unfortunately, I doubt I could do more than stall them. A few days of inconsistent training were no match for those who trained every day without fail. I wasn't sure about Sheila, but Rickey would have no problems.I grinded my teeth. This was so frustrating. The border wasn't that far away, but the cha
