Rafe scanned around until his eyes finally landed on the shooter.
He pulled out his gun and fired toward the position, but he still missed as bullets continued flying in their direction.
Rafe steadied his grip, aimed again, and fired. The bullet went straight into the shooter’s head, killing him instantly.
“Now!” Rafe said, grabbing Derek’s hand as they moved silently through the forest.
Then they spotted a place lit by a truck’s headlights.
“Hide here, let me take a look,” Rafe whispered, heading toward it while keeping to the shadows between the trees.
They were masked men, about five of them in the truck. Three removed their masks while two still wore theirs.
“We’ll make sure to get them tomorrow,” one said.
“I feel sleepy already,” another yawned. Rafe stayed still, watching from the dark. One of them climbed down and walked toward a darker spot, farther from where Rafe hid, and began urinating.
“Best time to strike,” Rafe muttered as he moved quietly behind him, clamping a hand over his mouth and gripping his neck, twisting hard.
The masked man struggled in Rafe’s hold but failed. He reached for a blade at his waist and tried stabbing Rafe, but Rafe twisted his arm and turned the blade into him instead. The man cried out in pain, but Rafe’s hand stayed sealed over his mouth.
Rafe grabbed the rope from the man’s waist and tied his mouth, then dragged him deeper into the forest, ignoring the pain burning in his own feet. Reaching a quiet hidden path, he removed the man’s black jumpsuit and mask and wore them.
He stabbed the man again until he was certain he was dead, then returned toward the truck, acting like one of them. As he approached, he noticed one man standing guard while the remaining three slept inside.
“Hey, you got me worried! What took you so long?!” the man asked, staring at Rafe.
“Sorry. Thought I found them, but they weren’t the ones,” Rafe replied, forcing his voice to sound natural.
The man studied him suspiciously, but Rafe walked to the truck and climbed in beside the others, two of them snoring loudly.
He shut his eyes while the man followed and stayed awake, watching him.
Rafe began snoring softly. The man leaned closer, placing his hand on Rafe’s mask, about to lift it. Rafe turned in his sleep and snored louder.
“Grrrrrr-hrrr-grrrr…”
The masked man stepped back, waited, then tried again, but Rafe caught his wrist and opened his eyes.
“Aren’t you asleep?... You seem different” the man said.
“I’m fine,” Rafe answered, releasing him and closing his eyes again.
The man tried to stay awake, but sleep dragged him under and soon he snored too.
Rafe opened his eyes and saw they were all asleep. He quietly took the pistol hanging on one man. He moved to the suspicious one and touched him lightly, but the man only snored deeper.
Rafe climbed down, checked the driver’s seat, and saw no one there, though the key remained.
He returned to the back of the truck, cocked both pistols, aimed at two foreheads, and fired. The sound woke the last two, blinking in confusion, but Rafe shot them before they could react.
He exhaled deeply and began dragging their bodies from the truck.
“Time to find that mister,” he muttered.
He removed his mask and returned to where Derek waited. Derek was shaking against a tree when he saw him.
“Please… please,” Derek begged, hands clasped and eyes shut.
“Keep low, mister. It’s me. We need to move,” Rafe whispered, pulling him. Only then did Derek recognize him.
They reached the truck and Rafe started the engine, driving through the dark forest.
They went farther until they spotted about five men on the path, their truck blocking the road.
“This must be the way out,” Rafe said, turning to Derek.
“I’ve got a plan.” He grabbed a thick rope beside him.

Their truck rolled toward the men. When the headlights hit them, their eyes snapped up and flashlights flicked on.
Rafe, masked, stopped in front of them.
“Active Men Two,” one said, seeing him. “Where are you headed?” He shone his light at Rafe and noticed a body.
“Active Men One. Killed one. Taking body for evidence,” Rafe replied, pointing at Derek, who lay still and breathless.
“Evidence?” one asked, stepping closer with his flashlight.
Another spoke into his walkie-talkie while approaching.
The first opened the truck door and grabbed Derek, turning his face into the light, but Derek didn’t react. The man pulled a blade from his waist, the same black jumpsuit uniform.
He lifted the blade, about to stab Derek.
“Stop,” Rafe warned coldly, locking eyes with him.
“I… I didn’t mean to…”“Shut up…,” Rafe cut in, his voice heavy with sleep. “You’re so… naughty…,” he murmured before drifting off.“Thank goodness.” Derek exhaled in relief, then lay down beside him, pulling the blanket over both of them.“What was I even thinking? How could I…?” He paused, lightly slapping his own cheek.“Shh…” Rafe breathed, continuing to snore softly.“I see why he didn’t want to drink in the first place,” Derek muttered before closing his eyes as sleep slowly claimed him.*The next day*They stepped out and slid into the car. Derek was dressed in a perfectly tailored brown suit, while Rafe wore a perfectly fitted black one.“To the hospital,” Derek instructed. The driver nodded as the engine roared to life and the car sped forward. When they arrived, they went to see Nelly, but she was still unconscious.“She needs time and rest,” one of the nurses explained gently.“Right,” Derek murmured. “Let’s go see her brother, Mr. Desmond.”The nurse led them toward Desmon
“Mr. Desmond!” Rafe called, running toward him as he lifted him up.Dr. Felix quickly dialed a number.“Rush to the office with a stretcher. Someone has passed out,” he instructed.Soon three nurses arrived with the stretcher. Desmond was placed on it and taken to another ward.“He's fine, he only passed out,” Dr. Felix told Derek as he glanced at his phone to check the time.“Oh… it’s getting late. We need to leave now,” Derek exhaled, rising from the chair.“Alright,” Felix replied.Derek nodded and turned toward the door, with Rafe following behind him. They walked out of the hospital, got into the car, and drove home.Arriving at Derek’s room, he hurried inside, took a quick shower, and changed into his pajamas. He walked to his wardrobe, took out another new set of pajamas identical to the one he wore, and approached Rafe.“Take this,” he said.Rafe hesitated at first, but Derek gently pressed it against his chest as he sat on the bed.“I need you to shower and change into them.
“Put the gun down,” Rafe warned, their hands raised as he stepped backward slowly.“Leave here now!” Mr. Desmond ordered at Rafe, who still stood there.“Go out,” Derek said to him.“I can't,” Rafe muttered back to him.“Okay then, you want to watch your boss join my father,” he said as the same lady returned. Her face was still swollen, her eyes widening when she saw Mr. Desmond pointing his gun toward Derek.“What are you doing, Desmond?” she asked as she approached him.“Let him go join father and deliver my message to him,” he said, his voice trembling with rage.He shut his eyes slowly as his finger tightened on the trigger. For a brief second, the room fell silent as the lady ran forward and threw herself in front of Derek.“No!! Don't!!” Rafe yelled, running, but before he could do anything, the shots went out:Pfft! Pfft! Pfft! The shots echoed as the lady fell to the ground and blood gushed out. Desmond opened his eyes to see his sister on the ground in a pool of blood.“Nell
Derek’s fingers tightened slightly around his phone.“What is it?” he asked again, his tone calm but edged with steel. There was a pause on the other end.“Sir, Mr. Desmond… Mr. Shalom’s son has been loading my phone with threats, blaming us for his father’s death,” Steve revealed.Derek exhaled deeply. “I understand his pain… and I also blame myself.”“Sir, it isn’t your fault. He refused to accept the compensation money, calling us all sorts of names,” Steve said.Derek sighed.“But sir, the staff have agreed to return, so in the next thirteen days they’ll resume work,” Steve added.Hearing this, a faint smile curled on Derek’s lips.“Thank you, Steve,” he said appreciatively.“The pleasure is mine, sir,” Steve replied.“Forward Mr. Desmond’s entire details to me. I’ll handle him myself,” Derek said.“Yes sir, I’ll do that right away,” Steve answered as the line went dead.Derek ran a hand through his hair as he stared at the damaged entrance of his building.“How do I handle Mr. De
Just then, a knock sounded on the door.“Yes, who is it?” Derek called out.“Sir, your dinner is ready,” a voice announced from the other side.“Alright, I’ll be down shortly. Double the dinner, we have someone with us, and assemble everyone. I have an announcement to make,” Derek instructed.“Yes, sir,” the voice said, then faded.“Let’s go have dinner,” Derek said to Rafe, who forced a smile to ease the tension. They stepped out together and headed downstairs toward the dining hall.As they entered, all five house staff stood lined neatly by the wall, their heads slightly bowed, hands clasped in front of them.Derek stopped at the head of the table.“Everyone,” he began calmly, “this is Rafe. From today onward, he is my personal bodyguard. You are to treat him with the same respect you give me. If he gives instructions regarding my safety, you are to comply immediately. Understood?”“Yes, sir,” they chorused in unison.Derek gave a slight nod. “That will be all. You may return to yo
“…I don’t know him,” Rafe replied, his voice steady as Derek’s gaze lingered on him.“I’ve never heard that name before,” he added, forcing himself not to meet Derek’s eyes.“I feel… unsettled. I need to understand what life deal Lucas was talking about, and why I’m somehow part of it,” Derek said, trying to steady his heartbeat.“We’ll find out,” Rafe assured, starting the car and driving toward Derek’s penthouse. When they arrived, Derek’s bodyguards greeted him.“Welcome, boss,” they said, nodding as Derek acknowledged them.As they stepped out, the bodyguards’ eyes flickered toward Rafe, who followed Derek without a word.“Yes, this is Rafe, my personal bodyguard and the leader of this team. Do exactly as he says, treat him as you would me,” Derek instructed before leaving with Rafe. They moved silently until they reached Derek’s room. Exhaustion dragged him onto the bed.“I’ve missed you,” he murmured to the pillows, while Rafe stood nearby, lost in thought. How could the suppose
