I kept digging at the scorched ground, nails tearing, until Rhys grabbed me and yanked me away.

"There's nothing here," he said, voice rough, his own hands not quite steady either. "Ivy. There's nothing here to dig for."

"He was right here." My voice sounded broken, like it belonged to someone else. "People don't just vanish. There should be a body. Or blood. Or something."

"Or a door," Mira said quietly.

We all turned.

She crouched at the edge, fingers tracing a groove in the scorched stone. I

The capital in daylight was nothing like the city they'd raced through weeks ago. It was bigger, colder, every banner snapping in the wind, every gold rooftop shining like a warning. Ivy felt the weight of all that power pressing down on them as they neared the palace gates."No word from Bianca's contacts," Kaelan said quietly, scanning the crowd gathering for the session with visible tension. "We're going in without the captain's testimony.""Then we work with what we have," Ivy said, forcing steadiness into her voice despite the fear coiling tight in her chest. "Serrin's testimony. Wren's presence. Whatever credibility any of that carries."The council chamber swallowed Ivy whole. It was a massive, circular hall, tiered seats rising all around, packed with pack representatives and minor nobles. King Aldric sat at the center on a raised dais, his advisors flanking him, their faces shifting from grim to openly hostile the second Ivy and her friends stepped inside.Murmurs swept throu

"He can't actually do this," Bianca said, pacing the cramped confines of Mabel's cottage, disbelief and fury tangled together in her voice. "Declare an entire bloodline a threat and authorize extermination? That's not law, that's just that's a purge with better paperwork.""That's exactly what it is," Corvin said, voice flat. His shoulder was bandaged, but pain still flickered in his eyes every time he moved. "Same words the council used sixty years ago. It's just history repeating itself, only now it sounds fancier.""The council vote isn't unanimous by tradition," Kaelan said, working through the political mechanics with visible urgency. "It requires majority support from the assembled pack representatives, not simply my father's decree. If enough voices oppose it""Your father's spent weeks controlling the narrative around everything that's happened," Ivy said. "Serrin's transformation, the border incidents, even your own disgrace he's had every opportunity to frame this exactly th

"She's still breathing," Corvin said sharply, fingers pressed against Serrin's throat, urgency cutting through his own pain. "Barely. But breathing.""That's not enough," Ivy said, hands still pressed hard against the wound, blood slick and warm against her palms despite everything she was doing to stem it. "We need to get her somewhere with real healers, now, before""There's a healer's cottage two miles south," Serrin's voice, barely audible, cut through the panic. Her eyes had cracked open again, fever-bright but present. "Old woman. Doesn't ask questions about who shows up bleeding at her door. I used to." A pained, fractured breath. "I used to go there as a child, when court politics got too vicious even for me.""You can direct us there," Kaelan said, already working to fashion a makeshift stretcher from broken branches and torn cloth. "That's good. That means you're staying conscious long enough to actually make it."Every step toward the cottage felt endless. Serrin's breaths

"How many?" Kaelan demanded, already moving toward the tree line to assess the threat."Enough," Serrin said, her voice rough with exhaustion but still sharp. She kept moving, even though every step looked like it cost her. "If I'm right, your father's finally decided to risk everything. He doesn't care about the politics anymore. Not now that his son's already disgraced in front of everyone."They hit the ridge just as the Ashford banners broke over the far hill. Not a handful of guards this time. A full company. More soldiers than Kaelan had ever seen sent after him before."He's not sending an escort this time," Corvin said grimly. "He's sending an army.""For me," Ivy said, understanding landing cold and certain. "Or for her. Possibly both.""Doesn't matter," Kaelan said. "We can't hold this valley. Not against that many. We came here ready to talk, not fight."Serrin's black eyes scanned the soldiers, sharp and calculating. She looked like someone who'd spent her whole life readi

"Assuming Wren's right," Rhys said, once the initial weight of the idea had settled enough for practical planning to begin, "we still need to find Serrin before we can offer her anything at all. And the last time any of us saw her, she was retreating wounded into unfamiliar territory with every reason to avoid being found.""She'll have gone somewhere she trusts," Corvin said. "Somewhere with meaning to her, not just tactical advantage. Everything she's done since the ceremony has carried an emotional weight beneath the strategy the sealed site, the ancestral estate, even the letters she's sent. She wants to be understood, even while insisting she doesn't.""The Draveth territory's main holdings," Kaelan said slowly. "Not the ancestral seat that's gone now, collapsed. But there's a secondary estate, smaller, more private. I remember hearing my father's advisors mention it once, dismissively, as the place Serrin apparently retreated to as a child whenever court politics grew too viciou

The second Sterling territory came into view, Ivy felt it a rush of warmth, the bond flaring so bright it nearly stole her breath. Not Kaelan beside her. Something ahead. Familiar. Steady. Her chest ached with relief before her mind could even catch up.Rhys.By the time they reached the gate, he was already moving, crossing the courtyard fast, like he couldn't get to her soon enough. Five days of dread and sleepless nights clung to him, tight around his eyes, but the relief when he saw her was so raw it nearly undid her."You're alive," he said, pulling her into a brief, fierce embrace before pulling back to study her properly, gaze cataloguing every visible injury with barely restrained worry. "All of you?""Barely," Kaelan said, dismounting stiffly beside her, "but yes. We found the third bloodline." He nodded toward Wren, exhausted and wary but upright, and Corvin, leaning heavily on his staff after days of travel, his aged body clearly hadn't fully recovered from. "And an ally we
