MAYA'S POV

All four of them are still trapped behind the barn, but it seems everyone just wants me to run. I need to figure out what to do.

Vines are shooting out from the giant man's body who's blocking their path. As the vine extends, it blocks the entrance more like a protective door. Jaden is bitting his thumb and pouring blood on the vine, trying to weaken it while Morien is breathing fire.

Lux, on the other hand, keeps shrinking to sneak out, but when she hits the vine, she bounces b

MAYA'S POV “Don’t fucking do it!” I’m yelling now, my voice cracking, my chest splitting open. My heart is literally breaking because Miles doesn’t even fight. He doesn’t struggle. He just leans back into Maddox, closes his eyes, as if he’s already surrendered to his fate. It’s sick to watch. Is nobody going to stop this? I think wildly. Maddox’s grip tightens. The blade presses closer to Miles’s neck. Suddenly, he shudders. A broken breath leaves him, his hand trembles and the knife clatters to the floor. He shoves Miles away. “I can’t do it!” he groans, his voice raw and tearing apart. Hadies’ sick smirk vanishes. Her face goes dangerously cold as she glares at Maddox. “What do you mean you can’t do it?” she snaps. Maddox glares at her. “Because he’s my brother, okay?” he fires back angrily. Despite everything, a fragile smile tugged at the corner of my lips. It’s the first time I’ve seen Maddox stand like this since I returned to the academy. “I can’t kill him,

MAYA'S POV “Jaden,” I call louder this time, jumping up and waving my hand. He turns, sizing me up. Then he shakes his head and starts walking toward me. I don’t move. I’ve never been one to back down. I stand tall with my head high and shoulders straight till he closes the distance between us. “Maya,” he says quietly. “You’ve made a very bad choice.” He glances around. “Food?” I step closer. Close enough to smell his cologne. I hate it. I used to love it. I'm standing so close that I can feel his breath against my skin, and I can whisper without anyone else hearing. “Food is the least of my problems, Jaden,” I say. “Can’t you see that everything—everything—is wrong? You keep telling me to play a game I don’t even understand. I don’t know the rules. I don’t even know what game we’re playing.” He adjusts the buttons on his suit, then folds his hands at the waistband of his pants. My eyes linger. I hate myself for it. I step back. For a brief second, something flicker

MAYA'S POV “Get over yourself, Maya. Your time is done.” My eyes stay closed. I run my tongue over my lips, still waiting for his kiss, but it never comes.Maddox's words replay in my head. "Get over yourself, Maya. Your time is done." It takes a while, a really long while, for the words to sink in. When I open my eyes, he’s no longer standing close to me. He’s several inches away now, leaning casually against the wall, ankles crossed and arms folded. What I thought I saw in his eyes... the vulnerability, the familiarity. It wasn’t real. I shook my head. It was just pure evil. “I hope you know what you’re doing.” That’s the last thing I say before I step inside the room and the heavy metal door slams shut behind me. Even the room is smaller. This isn’t the bed I was treated on when I first arrived. Everything feels wrong. Too tight... too empty. This is insane, but all I can think of is the safety of my mates. I hope my friend is okay. I fold my hands on my waist as m

MAYA'S POV “Maya, get down—now.” Maddox clenches his fists and moves toward me, but Hadies stops him, placing her hand flat against his chest. He freezes instantly. Hadies turns to me, a sinister smile curling her lips. “Well, what do you know,” she says, staring straight into my soul—not just my eyes. “I know you’re not the Hex Queen.” “Blasphemy!” they all scream. Next thing, hands grab me—Dale yanks my right arm while another guy seizes the left, forcing me down until I’m bowing at Hadies feet. I struggle, trying to fight them off, but it’s useless. They’re too strong, too solid. Shit. I know what I’m doing is crazy. How hard would it be to just play along? But it feels like they’re trying to recreate the past. I glance at the students. They look like zombies. Eyes glowing crimson red, bodies bowing in unison, and nodding to every word Hadies claims to be the Hex Queen. I'm pretty sure this is how it started years ago, based on the stories I’ve been told and fragmen

MAYA'S POV I clench my fists tightly as my body jerks, electromagnetic energy flowing through my veins. I can’t open my eyes. All I can see in my vision is blank white. Stay focused. I say it in my mind, trying to remind myself of what Jaden said earlier. I have to play along—pretend like I’ve lost my memory. I have no idea what this game is, but I just hope it’s worth my return to this academy. The energy keeps flowing through my veins, my body shaking as I try to free myself. My wrists are bound to the bed I’m lying on. It’s hard to act like I’m losing my memory when the pain is real and my vision is nothing but blank white, like I truly have lost my memories. “Maddox,” I whisper. I’m with you, he mind-links me. I sigh, then go silent. I hear a snap. The machine is switched off, and the buzzing stops. The pain, the electromagnetic surge—everything ceases. There’s absolute silence. Then, there's shuffling against the floor as footsteps move toward me. “Is it done?” o

  • MARKED BY MY MONSTERS.   69: ENEMIES DON'T STAND THAT CLOSE

MAYA'S POV “What did I miss?” I say. “I risked my life by coming back here, me and the other three—we could have been killed. They’re talking about wiping my memory!” I scream. “You need to fucking sleep,” Jaden barks. “What the hell is this?” I demand. “Maya?” Jaden’s face shifts. That mysterious look locked in. “I don’t fucking care about you, alright?” he says. “I don’t fucking need your help.” “Oh, shut up. You do,” I snapped. “You were worried about me. What if I—” “I don’t fucking care about you. You are nothing to me,” he yells. His confession is followed by utter silence. My hands pause midair. That one hurt, but I don't believe him. “We were okay without you,” Maddox says coldly. “We’ve already pledged our allegiance to the one, and only true queen.” I put my hands on my waist and stare at them, waiting for the punchline. Waiting for the last, stupid April Fool’s joke. It never comes. I just keep staring. This doesn’t make sense. It can’t be true. I s
