MAYA'S POV

The place reeks of rotten teeth and decayed meat, but that’s the least of my problems right now.

Directly opposite us is something that looks like a house, but that can’t be a house in a forest, in the middle of no civilization. I tilt my head to the side for a better view.

It's a combination of many dead tree trunks fixed together and has somehow been composed into a house. It’s long, about the size of a five-story building, and really wide.

There are visible partitions showing the start and end of each floor. In the middle floor, three thrones made of bamboo and leaves are arranged.

The chanting and dancing grow louder as a man, dressed in complete leaf regalia and a crown made of sticks, steps forward and takes the first throne. He is followed by a woman and a young boy. I think those are forest people rulers.

As they take their seats, the man with the man with the stick crown lifts up his hand, and the villagers excitement dies off. The drumbeat fades into

MAYA'S POV "Morien, Miles." I whisper their names, tapping them awake since they are the closest to me. They are too deep into their sleep to respond. I squeeze my body, trying to roll out, but Miles hangs around my waist, tightens. He won't let me go anywhere. "Maddox..." I strain my neck, and whisper to Maddox who is sleeping at the far end of the bed. He can't hear me, either. Outside, the knocking grows persistent. The door knob turns. The prince is about to walk in, and I don't know how this will look. We are all practically naked on this bed. I carefully squeeze my body, lifting their hands from my body and rolling down from the bed. I jump down off the bed, and throw it over them. Covering their bodies so it's just their heads showing and nobody would know they have no clothes on. I straighten my dress, and throw one of the men's shirt over. I rush to the door dress, peeping once before opening the door. I let out a breath. It's just the maidens. I glance both side

MAYA'S POV "I don’t see how that’s a problem," Miles says immediately. "Worry not, we are her mates. We’ll stay together with her." "Of course there’s just one room left," Maddox continues, arms crossed. "What poor accommodation you've got prince. It's still good though, so I can stay together with Maya and protect her." He sighs. "I don’t even trust the security around here." "So what about me?" Lux asks, suddenly feeling weird. "I hate being the third wheel, or in this case—" she glances between us, counting. "One, two, three… seven wheel." "Would you stay together with the maids and the warriors?" The prince asks, his voice hesitant. Gosh, I cringe my nose, staring at Lux, waiting for her to say that no in her dramatic voice. Her eyes go wild. She looks between me and the prince and then she screams, "Hell yes!" "Yes," Miles replies, apparently shocked too. She smiles. "I’ll stay then." Then she leans in, which brings her closer to me. "I can collect the info on thi

MAYA'S POV. "When I said I didn’t trust this people, nobody listened." Maddox angry voice breaks through the ringing in my head. "It’s the cuff that wasn’t responding," the prince explains in a panicked tune. "It was resisting the magical effect." "I just hope my friend is okay," Lux says. "She’s awake," someone calls. "She didn’t cause the attention." They all rush toward me and gather around. "Maya." Morien holds my hand. "What did you see? What happened?" I glance at the cuff wrapped around my arm. The glow is totally gone. It looks like something burnt from the inside... whatever that memory spa did to me, it weakened this damn cuff and that's a plus. "You’ll be okay," Miles whispers, dropping a kiss on my forehead. Maddox just stands and keeps glaring at the prince. He can’t help himself. He’s still breathing hard too. "Maya, are you okay?" Lux says, her voice still filled with fear. "What did you see in your memory?" "I saw myself on my throne. I saw the wa

  • MARKED BY MY MONSTERS.   53: SAVED BY THE WRONG MAN

MAYA'S POV The farther we go, the forest becomes darker. The drumming fades off gradually. "So this place is not affected by the plague?" Morien asks, trying to sound a bit friendly. The prince nods. "Of course it’s not. We have guards stationed miles away, watching the forest for any little sign of disturbance. If it’s a plague or a contamination, they kill it before it gets here. And if it’s food"—he pauses, glancing at us. "sorry. If it’s food, they bring it here for us to eat." "So you guys are cannibals then?" Morien asks again. "I don’t like being defined by terms." Morien scoffs at the prince response. "We recognized you because of your sigil," the prince says, as if just remembering the question I asked earlier. I glance down at my sigil, which is now dark with no glow and a cuff pressing over it. "This cuff makes it impossible to work my powers." "That doesn’t look like any regular kind of cuff," the prince mutters. "No. It’s not. The academy placed it

  • MARKED BY MY MONSTERS.   52: MEMORY BARGAIN

Maya's POV. "So what do you propose?" I step closer to the king's throne. "There is a memory spa at the boundary of our clan. My guards can take you there. It will help you remember everything you need to know." "I will do it," I blurt out immediately. "No." Maddox says it loudly this time, since obviously I’m not listening. He steps in front of me. "We are not getting any more corrupted memories." "I understand your worry, Maddox, but—" "We are not!" He interrupts me, grabbing my wrist and forcing me toward the door with him. I yank my hand free and shove him off me. "Don’t you dare try to control me. If there’s anyone untrustworthy here, it’s you. You killed me in my first life. I should think twice before letting you in again." That one stops him because he freezes, visibly recoiling. I step backward, nodding at him, seeing the guilt plastered all over his face. Then, he shakes his head and stammers. "Maya... it wasn't... I didn't... you don't remember what you
