CHAPTER FOUR

Her eyes slowly fluttered open. She winced as her eyes took in the white lights. Her vision adjusted to the lighting, and she took in her environment.

Her gaze swept through the luxurious hospital ward. How did she get here? Her head ached as she tried to remember what had happened, but it only throbbed more.

Despite being a hospital, the sweet scent of lavender danced in the air. Clara tried to sit up on the bed, but it was a task she found impossible.

“You’re awake.” The deep baritone voice jolted her. She turned her head to see a handsome man standing a few feet away from her bed.

Jet-black hair, cold blue eyes, pale pink lips, and a sharp jawline. He had a rather broad chest, and he was incredibly tall not to mention the clothes he wore made it clear he was from a wealthy background. Who was this man? More importantly, why was he here?

“Do you remember what happened to you?” he asked, his voice calm and soothing.

Clara shut her eyes, trying to remember how she had gotten here. All she remembered was leaving her daughter’s funeral. The painful pang returned the lonesome pain she felt upon losing her daughter. Ken’s betrayal everything lashed at her again. Clara struggled to get up from the bed, but she couldn’t move. A tear slipped from her eye at how helpless she was.

“There’s no use trying to move for now. You were in a coma for three weeks, and your body is still trying to recover.”

Her eyes widened. Three weeks?! She had been unconscious for that long? She stared at the man again.

“What happened to me?”

Her voice came out broken. Now she fully realized why her throat felt so dry and parched, why she felt so weak and drained.

The man walked toward her, standing next to the bed. “That’s left for you to remember, Clara.”

How did he know her name? Who was this man? Surely, she would never forget such a face if she had met him before. Clara couldn’t think more about it as she felt herself sink deeper into the bed, her eyelids heavy. No matter how hard she fought to stay awake, it was all in vain as her lids began to close and she drifted back to sleep back to her dreams haunted by the happy moments she had spent with her daughter before her death.

………

Her eyes fluttered open again, and Clara was glad that she could now move her body. She sat up on the bed, her eyes sweeping through the empty ward. That man was he perhaps a figment of her imagination?

She struggled to get down from the bed, her limbs shaking as she walked toward the mirror. Her eyes widened, almost falling out of their sockets.

What had happened to her!? Her face and head were completely wrapped in bandages. Staring at her arm, she could see faint scars that had begun to heal.

Clara fell to her knees, her head throbbing insanely as the memories of what had happened hit her. Ken’s words at the mansion, the divorce, her daughter’s funeral, and then the call with Yvonne.

Her heart tightened. Her fists clenched. The baby she had been carrying wasn’t Ken’s. Her daughter had died for nothing!

Tears pooled in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She would hold on to this pain, and she would use it as the driving force to get revenge for her daughter.

The door opened, and the doctor and two nurses came in. Their eyes widened on seeing her on the floor, and they quickly rushed to help her up.

They led her back to the bed. The doctor held her shoulder. “Please relax, ma’am. You’ve been in critical condition for the past three weeks.”

Clara’s eyes fell on the name of the hospital inscribed on the doctor’s coat—‘Lily Hospital’. Her eyes widened. Lily Hospital wasn’t one just anyone could afford. They had the best doctors in the country, very reputable too. They charged millions of dollars for their services. If she was here… who had been paying her bills?

Looking around the ward, she suddenly realized it had only one bed—clearly a VIP ward.

She didn’t even have a dime to her name. Ken and his family had left her dead broke. How on earth was she going to pay the bills? And she’d been in this ward for three weeks the bills would’ve piled up into millions. Clara swallowed hard.

The doctor, who had smartly pieced together her expression, cleared his throat. “Someone has cleared all the bills already. You don’t have to worry about that.”

Clara felt her nerves relax at that. Her brows knotted. Who had paid her bills? That man perhaps he wasn’t a figment of her imagination. He had been there and he might have cleared her bills. But why?

The doctor soon drew her attention again, telling her about the facial surgery. Her face had been seriously damaged, and the surgery had to be done immediately.

Clara was apprehensive about everything but she had little time to dwell on it. The surgery was done the very next day.

The man showed up at her ward again after the surgery. She now looked different. She had been extremely beautiful before, but now she was even more beautiful and unrecognizable.

Clara stared at the man, who stared back at her. His lips pulled into a smile, one that eased the tension.

“My name is Kai.”

Her brow arched. The name Kai still didn’t ring a bell. “Why… did you save me? And clear my bills?” Clara wanted to kill her curiosity right there. After being hurt and betrayed by Ken, she refused to believe there was good left in any man.

Kai chuckled. The deep sound made her stomach knot.

“I knew your daughter, Claire. I owed her a favor, and consider this my way of repaying it.”

Her heart twisted in her chest. She badly wanted to ask how he had known Claire, what favor he owed her. But Clara stopped herself from asking refusing to open her wounds all over again.

“Everyone thinks you’re dead. It was aired on the news.”

Her brow creased at the new information. Everyone thought she was dead? Everyone included Ken and Yvonne.

Clara turned to look at the mirror in front of her. Her new appearance fiercely gazed back at her. Good, let them think that. The Clara they knew was dead.

She was now Chloe—a newly born demoness who would drag them all to the pit of hell.
