LOGIN"There's nothing I can do now." I stared at Alex, not knowing why I'm telling him everything. "Marry me Alice," he paused, coming closer to me, "I have enough power for you to fight." The last thing I wanted was another marriage, but I had the most advantage. I get to be seen as the wife of this smoking hot man, no, that's not important. I get to fight my ex husband and get rid of what he has on me.

I curled up on the sofa, laughing a bit too loudly at the comedy TV show I've been watching for close to two hours now. My eyes went up to the wall clock_ 11:20pm! I picked up my phone to call Edward again, but then I heard his car at the driveway. “I thought you'd sleep in your office,” I smiled at my joke as he walked in, expecting him to laugh as he always does. But his face held no emotion of such sort. “Is something wrong, honey?” I strode towards him in worry, loosening his tie. “Nothing is wrong. I'm just tired,” he said, slumping into the couch. “I'll get you a cup of water.” When I returned with a glass of water, Edward held a file in his hand. “We should talk Alice.” “About?” I sat close to him, curious about the file. He handed it to me, and the contents left me in my most confused state. “Let's get a divorce.” His voice came calm, shattering the silence between us. “Wha.. what do you mean?” “You heard me, Alice.” “Why are we getting divorced?” I inquired, getting a bit impatient. “Are you stressed? If you're stressed about anything, we can talk it out. But this? You can't just come back and decide to divorce out of the blue. Does that even make sense?” I shook my head, handing the file back to him. “Alice, don't make this harder than it is,” he stood up and faced me, “I've had these papers for a month now. I'm not stressed, neither do I still want you. You want to know why we're getting divorced?” he snickered, “it's because I already have someone else, someone that makes me feel alive.” “Oh,” he turned to me again, “she's pregnant too.” “Wh..what do you….,” the word stuck in my throat, his words painfully registering. I stared blankly at the door as he turned and left. What just happened? My eyes slowly trailed to the table where I had set wine and glasses to celebrate our fifth year anniversary. Did he even remember it's our anniversary, or was it also part of the plan to tell me those years did not matter. Tears filled my eyes, and as much as I tried to hold it back, it ran down my cheeks. I felt a lump on my chest, as I whimpered in pain. Then the nausea hit, and I felt dizzy. *********************************************** I woke up to beeping of machines, and sterile scent of antiseptic. Hospital. I am in the hospital. “Alice! You are awake!” I heard my old housekeeper, Beth, say with relief. “What happened?” I sat up, looking around. “You fainted in the sitting room. I heard a loud thud and came down, only to see you in that state. I was really scared.” Tears formed in her eyes. “I’m sorry for making you worry.” Beth has been with me almost all my life. She worked for my mum, and continued taking care of me even when my parents passed. And still stayed with me as I got married. “The doctor said you had a panic attack, and your blood pressure spiked. Have you been under a lot of stress?” It all suddenly came to me again. Edward's sudden divorce, and his announcement about his new woman. I sighed. “I already called Mr. Edward and he said he will come later,” she added. I scoffed. “He might as well want me dead,” I muttered under my breath. “What did you say?” “Nothing.” I shook my head. I can't bring myself to tell her what is going on between us for now. I lay back quietly, thoughts I had kept out, slowly clouding my mind. No matter how much I think about it, I couldn't figure it out. I met Edward in my final year at college. When I first met him he was bubbly and cheerful, and was persistent in getting to be my friend. More than anything I liked how he made me feel, safe and loved. That was why a year after we graduated, I said yes to his proposal. He always looked at me like he wouldn't survive without me. We had a lot in common…. TV shows, sleeping in, favourite toothpaste too! I blinked. And tears fell. Shit! I cursed. Quickly wiping it off my face. Why am I crying? Just then Beth walked in with food. “Here, eat this. I'll go back home and get a few things you'll need for the night.” “Thank you.” An hour later, my back was against the door when someone walked in. “Beth, are you back already?” I asked, only turning to see Edward. With a redhead beside him! It's always the redheads. I stared blankly at him, as they came closer. “Heard your blood pressure spiked.” No response. “Here. I brought the papers for you to sign. And this is Claire.” He was clearly excited. Excitement I haven't seen in a while, and I thought it was work stress from his promotion to director. I took the file from him, and glanced through the contents. It was okay until my eyes caught something. “What is all this? Why are you taking everything?” I asked in shock, my eyes not leaving the papers. “I'm taking everything that is mine.” He gave a smug smile that made me want to kill him. “The house, the building, the joint account and even the company shares that I gave you!” “It’s all mine now.” He said with the same tone that infuriated me. “I won't take this. I'll speak to my lawyer tomorrow.” I glared at him. “Leave!” Claire stepped forward, throwing a phone on the bed. “I think you have to see that video.” She said, smiling. I picked up the phone and my eyes widened in disbelief. What am I seeing? Why am I in bed with another man? And naked!(ALICE)My heels clicked softly on the stairs as I gracefully descend into Alex’s gaze. The silk emerald green dress, the silver heels, the diamond jewelries he got me and a sleek designers purse completed my look.“You look beautiful,” he said, extending his hands towards me to help me down.I gave a forced smile, “You’re quite in character for tonight.” “Oh come on Alice, you can’t even accept a compliment from me? I meant it.” He smiled.I turned to him. “Thank you.”“Here.” He brought out a small black box, “It’s a ring .”“For?”“We’re engaged,” he gave me a how- could- I- forget look. “It’s an engagement ring,” he gently took my hands in his and slipped the sleek diamond ring onto my finger. It’s so pretty. He really thinks about everything. We drove off and about thirty minutes later we were at the MAYFIELD VILLA. I resisted ogling like a fool and just clung to Alex for our all night long pretend scheme. The dining hall was beautifully kept. His grandmother must love artwor
(ALICE’S POV)“What was that?” I clicked my door shut, leaning on it for a sec. My hand flew to my face, rushing over to the mirror to see my red face. “I hope he didn’t see that!” “He’s pleading early as my husband? Seriously, did he have to whisper it? He totally caught me off guard.” I mumbled, plunging onto my bed.I laid on the bed staring at the ceiling. My life was like a movie, a big thriller about my messy life.Yes, anyone would feel lucky to marry a billionaire but… maybe I shouldn’t have accepted his proposal. This is all a prop and it can flop anytime. I can’t afford to be used again. The only thing I can do now is find a job and make money, then I can break free anytime. I pulled up the duvet, covering my face and drowning my thoughts.I woke up the next morning to an email. 'Dear Alice Sanders,We are delighted to inform you that you have been selected for the Interior Design Internship position at Mayfield Interiors, a subsidiary of the Mayfield Group.Your skill
(ALEX’S POV)I watched her silently across the table. The utter surprise on her face when I asked her to marry me was gone. She let my last sentence hang by a fragile thread above us, as she continued eating. I prepared myself for rejection. Of course, even though she had more advantage marrying me, she’s someone who’d do anything to not leech off anyone, or end up indebted."Why?" she didn't look up."What?""Why do you want to marry me? We just met and I think it's quite suspicious that you are offering to help me. And you're helping me by getting married to me." She briefly glanced at me."I figured you'd ask. Well the truth is," I paused, recollecting my words. She has to believe me, " I'm not ready to marry, especially not to a woman arranged by my family.""Didn't that only happen in movies," she scoffed, "What? Are you a heir to some powerful wealthy family?""Yes." I laughed, " So you see, I can help you. I'm quite capable."“Fine.” She said, her eyes still on the food she was
(ALICE.) My eyes trailed up the double height ceilings. The glass, the furniture, the aesthetics. One word. Majestic. I quickly tore my eyes down, following Alex to the living room, my eyes doing a quick glance around the floor. I wanted my eyes to linger a bit, because who glances around a fucking penthouse! Not my fault. His “humble abode” was exquisite. He’s either from an old money family, or he’d be one of those tech guys that built a multi million dollar tech company at twenty four, or he’s straight out into illegal stuffs that rakes in money. And I’m talking drugs, or underground military weaponry distribution. “Relax. Feel at home.” Alex turned. “This is not my home,” I countered immediately. “Don’t be fierce Alice,” he laughed, “it can be your home if you want.” “Thanks for having me,” I dismissed whatever he was saying, grateful I had a place to spend the night. “Come on, let me show you your room.” I silently followed him up the staircase to the bedroom
( ALICE ) I tossed comfortably on the bed, stretching, slowly opening my eyes. I blinked. Once. Twice. The curtains were drawn over the windows, completely blocking the sunlight. That must be why the sunrise didn’t wake me. But something was off. My curtains are usually open. I paused, the scent of pistachio and mint filling my nose. Wait! My eyes widened. I turned immediately to the side, and he was on the couch reading newspaper. His face calm like I wasn’t there. He Instinctively looked towards me. “ You’re awake?” I nodded, hiding my embarrassment and the fact that I don’t remember how I ended up in his room again. My head ached terribly, and I furrowed my brow in pain. “Here, have some food and take the hangover medicine,“ Alex said, setting the table with a few strides. I didn’t like eating without brushing my teeth, but this situation made it impossible to uphold that principle. The aroma of the food evoked great hunger in me, and secondly I can’t just walk out witho
(ALICE)I quietly cleared out my desk. Leaving like I never worked to be where I was. I handed my project design files over to the next person in charge. It felt like a movie. Maybe I’m in a dream, because my head still couldn’t wrap around the fact that the life I’ve built for years has totally crumbled in front of me.So much for trusting a man!Talking about man. I have to visit Edward. I waited till the office hours were over, to be sure he would be home. I knocked and Claire appeared yet again.“Where is Edward?” I was so getting sick of all this.“Darling. Alice is asking for you.” “I’d be down in a sec.” I heard Edward say from upstairs.I sat in the living room like a stranger, like this wasn’t my home. There had been changes, obviously to Claire’s taste.“Heard you’re looking for me,” he said, descending gracefully on the stairs like a king. And in that fleeting moment, I wanted to take it all from him.“Did you have to attack me in my workplace too?”“Your workplace? Oh,
