CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED FOURTEEN:

“She’s coughing.”

June said it from the doorway like a report she’d been trained to deliver.

Theo didn’t look up from the kitchen table. “Tell Mom.”

“You’re right here.”

“I’m off the clock.” His pencil kept moving. “Tell Mom.”

June hovered, confused. “But you always—”

“I don’t always. Not anymore.” Theo’s voice stayed flat. “Adults own the day. Go.”

She went. The hallway took her footsteps toward the living room.

Theo stared at the same math problem until the numbe

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE SPACE BETWEEN SYSTEMS

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED SIXTEEN: “I can’t tell if I’m better or just quieter.”Theo said it from the doorway of the den at 9:40 p.m., already in socks, already braced. Dimitri sat on the sofa with his phone face up on his knee. The rest of the house had finally gone still.“That’s not nothing,” Dimitri said.“It feels like nothing.” Theo stepped in but stayed near the door. “I stayed off the clock. You stopped looking at me for confirmation. Mom cleared a cough without drafting me. I did homework for twenty minutes without tracking anyone’s lungs. And I still feel like I’m waiting for the part where it all snaps back.”Lyra appeared behind him in the hall, arms crossed. “Then say you’re waiting. Don’t turn the waiting into a verdict that the split is fake.”Theo turned on her too fast. “I’m not calling it fake. I’m saying I don’t trust a calm that only exists because everybody is following a script. Scripts break. Then what am I? The kid who believed the quiet again?”The den felt too sm

Not anymore.” Theo’s voice stayed flat. “Adults own the day. Go.”She went. The hallway took her footsteps toward the living room.Theo stared at the same math problem until the numbers stopped meaning anything. His body had already started listening. Counting. Measuring the gaps between the coughs drifting from the other room. He pressed the pencil harder and stayed in the chair.Lyra’s voice carried, calm and exact. “Checking.”A pause.“Clear.”Theo’s shoulders dropped a fraction. Then climbed again because the whole sequence had still happened inside his earshot and his nervous system didn’t care about the new split.Dimitri appeared in the kitchen doorway. “You stayed a

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE DAYLIGHT RULES

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED THIRTEEN:“I’m not doing the night watch in the afternoon anymore.”Theo said it standing in the middle of the living room with Anna on a blanket at his feet and the discharge papers still on the coffee table. No buildup. No soft landing.Lyra looked up from the script she was sorting. Dimitri stopped in the doorway with a water glass in his hand. June sat frozen on the arm of the couch.“Okay,” Lyra said carefully. “Then we change it. Specifics.”“Specifics.” Theo’s voice was flat and fast. “No more checking faces every time she coughs. No more silent counting in the kitchen. No more June asking me if her breathing sounds weird like I’m the resident expert on lungs. I can’t be the alarm system from breakfast to bedtime. I won’t.”Anna picked up a block and banged it once. The sound made every adult shoulder tighten. Theo noticed and laughed once, sharp. “See. That. That right there. A block hits the floor and this whole room climbs. I’m done living inside that cli

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE COUGH THAT WASN'T NOTHING

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED TWELVE: “It’s different.”Theo’s text hit Dimitri’s phone at 1:17 a.m. No greeting. No soft landing.Harder. Longer. Come.Dimitri typed while already standing:Coming. He took the stairs two at a time.Theo was on the floor of Anna’s room with the nightlight throwing hard shadows across both of them. Anna’s coughs came wet and deep, one on top of the other, her small face red and furious between them. Not the residual tick. Something meaner.“I didn’t wait,” Theo said, voice shaking. “I know. I just—listen.”Dimitri was already listening, already counting the spaces between the coughs, already feeling for fever with the back of his hand. “Lyra.”She was in the doorway before the second call finished, took one look, and moved. “I’ll get the bag. We’re not debating this one.”Anna coughed so hard she gagged. Theo’s hands hovered like he was afraid to hold her wrong. Dimitri scooped her up against his chest, upright, steady, the old emergency posture coming back wit

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE WORLD THAT BROKE THE AFTERNOON

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED ELEVEN:“Stop checking her like she’s going to die in the next five minutes.”Theo’s voice cracked across the kitchen so hard June dropped a spoon. Anna kept banging a plastic bowl on the floor, oblivious. Dimitri froze with his hand still half-extended toward the toddler’s back.“I said checking,” Dimitri answered, low.“I heard what you said.” Theo stood in the doorway with his backpack half-zipped and his eyes too bright. “I also saw your face. That’s not a check. That’s a countdown.”Lyra turned from the counter fast. “Both of you stop. Right now.”“No.” Theo stepped in. “We’re doing the out-loud thing, right? Then I’m saying it out loud. The house is still living inside the hospital. Every cough. Every pause between breaths. I’m done pretending this is careful. It’s scary with a script.”Anna hit the bowl twice and laughed. The sound should have helped. It didn’t.Dimitri pulled his hand back and stayed on one knee. “She had a real emergency a few days ago. Lo

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    CHECKING

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED TEN: “Checking.”Dimitri said it from the doorway of the living room the second Anna’s cough came harder than the residual ones. Not a whisper. Not a silent stare. The word itself.Theo’s head snapped up from the homework spread across the coffee table. “Don’t.”“Checking,” Dimitri repeated, already moving to Anna on the rug.Lyra was on her feet too. “Let him.”Anna coughed again, face red, then sucked in a wet breath and banged her block against the floor like nothing had happened. Dimitri knelt, watched her chest, listened, waited through one more cough.“Clear,” he said.Theo’s pencil snapped in his hand. “You didn’t need to announce it like a drill.”“That was the agreement,” Lyra said quickly. “Out loud. No silent radar.”“It still feels like a drill.” Theo stood, papers sliding. “The whole room tensed. June tense. I was tense. You turned a cough into a procedure.”June froze on the couch with a book open and unread. “I didn’t—”“You did,” Theo said. “Everyb
