It's raining when I get up and continues to do so until i'm in my office building. I find Christine peeping into my office holding two cups of coffee. "What are we looking at?" she jumps obviously startled. "Oh, you're here," she says giving me a quick glance and goes back to looking into my office. "There's this hot guy in your office,"  I move to her side so I can take a look. It's not Avan. I feel a bit dissapointed. "I told you to let my patients wait for me outside until I get here," I try to dry myself before going in. "But he's not a patient, he said he's a detective and has some questions regarding a case he's working on." I help the detectives sometimes when they are trying to arrest an offender especially serial ones. Christine gives me one of the coffees and heads back to her desk as I go in.

The first thing I notice is, he is crude and lacks any sense of sophistication or class. However he is a handsome man with very manly features. "Good morning i'm Detective Kerrick Swindle," I offer my hand and he takes it promptly, "I'm Dr. Vienna Starr." He releases my hand immediately I say my name and does not linger like some men do. "I have not seen you around before," he nods and takes a seat. "I have just been transfered to Greencity recently and I was wondering if I could ask you some questions about the case i'm working on." I lean on my desk as he shuffles the files I hadn't notice before.

"So do you know Carrey Mark and  Nate harris," I immediately tense up. This is not him asking for my input on a case, this is him questioning me like a person of interest. "Um, yes I went out with Nate once and Mark around three or four times," he looks at me intensely before nodding his head. "Why once? he wasn't good enough to score a second date?" he smiles but the tone of his voice suggests he's not joking. "No, he never got in touch with me after that date," he looks at his files. "When was this?" panic starts to rise inside me and I try not to let it on. "It was the night before last night," he looks at me intensely before closing his file."He never called because he never even got home. There's nothing similar between the murder of these two men, not the cause of death, not the time of death, not the location they are disposed off,not the..." Wait are you saying mark is dead too?" I feel sick. "Yes doctor and the only thing both men have in common was you were the last person to be seen with them alive," he stands and moves closer to me. Close enough for me to smell the mint from his breath."Why do you think that is?"

I am no longer a person of interest but their main suspect. I can tell by his questions but mostly by the way he is looking at me. "I have no idea why, detective," he continues to pierce my soul with his very blue eyes for what feels like ages. "Okay that's it for now but i have a feeling i'll be seeing you soon," he takes the cup of coffee that's been on my desk and before I can react he's out the door.

The rest of my day I have four appointments. After that I take the bus to the mini mart near my apartment. I need liquor badly especially if I am about to go to prison. The thought of that makes every part of me cringe. On top of all that Jade has a date tonight of all nights. I make my way to the drinks section. After i'm done selecting the drinks from fridge I try to close it. I realize someone is holding the refridgerator door. I look up to see Avan with sweatpants and a hoodie on. He looks at my hand and his lips curve into a small smile, "hard day, huh?" He bugs me, something about him feels off. I walk away leaving  him holding the door.

After the cashier is done calculating my total I reach in for my wallet. A hand from behind me reaches around me and places a big can of ice cream next to my drinks. "Add that," I hear the familiar voice and I don't even have to turn to know who it is. "What do you think you're doing?" I look back to see him holding his tongue out like a kid who's just gotten away with something. "It'll be fifty dollars miss," the cashier says looking so uncomfortable with the whole situation. Before I can pay Avan hands her his card. I am about to protest but he gets a call and goes outside to receive it.

"Is this Swindle guy going to be an issue for us 'cause we can always get someone else," I walk next to him. He looks at me and I can swear for a second there he looked startled. But he covers it too well and too fast. "Wait, did you just say Swindle? Like detective Swindle," he looks at me with a confused look. "No, that was my assistant. What would I be talking about a detective for?" he looks like he's telling the truth. I begin to wonder if I am actually that stressed out that I am starting to hear my own things. I hand him his icecream. "I don't eat that stuff, too cold and gives me headaches," I return it to the shopping bag. "So why did you buy it?" he smiles. "You said you were having a hard day." "No I didn't." Yes you did." "No I didn't." We go on like that for a while that I don't even notice we begin walking towards my apartment.

"Fine, maybe you didn't but you're too easy to read Starr," I like it when he calls me that. It reminded me of my brother. I wish he was here. He could have taken care of the whole murder thing for me. God, how I miss him, how I miss all of them. "A hard day is an understatement. Because you're feeling so generous maybe I could hold on to this too,"I say showing him his gold card. "Yeah, why not?" he says giving me such intense eyes. "Everything that I have will one day belong to you anyway," he smiles and continue walking. I stand there trying to process what he'd just said. "Hey I was kidding take your card back," I say running to catch up to him. "Well I wasn't," we're now standing at the gate of my apartment. "Isn't this you?" he says pointing at the gate. "How do you know?" "Tell me why you had a hard day and i'll tell you how I know," I can't tell my patient who's maybe mentally unstable that his doctor may be going to prison for the murder of two men.

"Okay then, you keep your secrets and i'll keep mine," he smiles when he says it. But still a part of me feels like mine isn't a secret and if it is,  it won't be for much longer. At least not to him. "So is this where we look at each other longingly and I lean in for a kiss?" that startles me and I take a step back. "This was not a date," he takes a step forward. "You're right that can't be our first date, so like a pre date or something like that?" he smiles and my cheecks feel hot. He smiles like he has achieved his goal and takes a step back.

Two black suvs come driving fast and stop by us. One man gets out and bows to him. "We've found her. She's abroad but we've found Lily Sir," he rushes in and punches the guy. The guy drops to the grond clenching his stomach. He looks back at me, "have a restful night and try not to worry so much. Things have a way of taking care of themselves."  Avan enters one of the cars and they drive off. That name seems familiar. Lily, where have I heard it before? It is when I am in the shower that it finally dawns on me. Lily was my brother's fiancee and Jade's sister. Could it be the same Lily? And if so what does he want with her.

"Hello," I say as soon as she picks up. "Hey, girl. How have you been?" It's so nice to hear her voice. "I feel like I haven't talked to you in forever," I say, trying to push away what just happened from my mind. "I am still mad at you," Jade is someone who can't keep what she's feeling to herself. I like that about her. "What did I do?" I try to recall the last time we talked. I can't think of anything I might have said to make her mad."You refused to let me join you on your trip," she says. "Oh that," I smile and adjust the covers on top of me. "Don't say it like that," I can imagine her scowling. "Like what?" I can't help but laugh. "Like it wasn't a big deal and I shouldn't be mad," I stop laughing. She is serious. "I am so sorry honey. I just needed some time alone, and believe me I regret not allowing you to join me," I mean it. "Why? What happened?"I tell her everything that happened. From meeting Garden, to receiving the package and running, to Avan saving me and finall

I can't seem to keep my eyes off him. Something about him has changed, but I can't seem to place my fnger on it. "How have you been these days?" I ask, as he stops at a pedestrian crossing. "I have been good," he gives me a small smile. "Anything unusual happen when I wasn't around?" I probe. "You were only there for two days and one night. What could possibly have happened?" I don't know what to say, but I am sure something about him is different. "How do you know Garden?" I ask. "We're friends, well sort of," he replies clearly not wanting to get into details. "Did you bribe him?" "No," he says without hesitation. "And,,," I start but he cuts me off. "Enough with the questions Starr," he sounds annoyed. We drive in silence for a while. I want to ask where we are going, but I am scared he might bite my head off. "What do you want to eat?" he finally speaks, breaking the silence which I appreciate. "Anything really," he nods. He puts on some music. I close my eyes and think of a s

Avan's p.o.vOne year ago,"Sir, we're being followed," my driver says. I look back and see three identical suvs on our tail. "Can you lose them?" he looks at the rear view mirror. He has a look of uncertainity."What do you suggest we do?" Just my luck, the one day I don't use a follow up car. "You should get off," he says looking back at them. He swerves, overtaking the cars in front of us. "When I make the next turn, I will slow down but just for a second, You jump out," he says. I have been in worse situations than this. But today I really wasn't in the mood for this. I was just from having lunch with my father. After all the training I have undergone he still won't let me take over his businesses unless I see a psychiatrist. Now this. "Sir?" my driver asks, as we approach the next turn. "Sure," I reply. I jump out immediately he makes the turn as planned. Luckily there are few business stalls at that corner and I am able to blend in with people. I watch as the cars followin

I did not hear him leave. I wake up to an empty bed and a lot of noise from the neighbouring cells. "Girl, do you always sleep talk?" the woman in the prison cell next to me asks.I cannot say that I just spend the night with the leading detective on my case. "Sometimes," I lie, hoping she'll just let it be. "So,,," she starts but is interrupted by Kelly who comes to get me. "Your lawyer is here," he says, opening the door for me to come out. "How was your night?" he asks, as we walk to the interrogation room. "It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be." "Good morning, Miss Kilmartin," Alec walks to me the moment he sees me. "Morning Alec," he smiles. It is the first time I have seen him smiling. "Let's talk in there," he leads the way to the interrogation room. "I didn't expect to see you today," I say, taking the seat I have become accustomed to. "You should expect to see me every day until we get you out of here," I am not sure how I feel about that. "So, I went to the home,"

  • MATCH MADE IN HELL.   CHAPTER THIRTY; FIRST NIGHT IN A PRISON CELL.

I am wishing for that hotel room right about now. I am on my own in a cold prison cell with a metallic toilet and a hard bed if I can even call it that. I try to sleep but I can't. Other than the utter discomfort of the bed, I am anxious and nervous about this whole situation. I know Avan told me not to worry and he'll take care of it but I can't help but worry. Just as desperate as he is to get me acquitted so is Kerrick to get me locked up for good. I hear the gate outside unlocking. I close my eyes and pretend I am sleeping. "It's me," it's Kerrick. Still with my eyes closed I turn to face the wall. I hope he goes away but instead he opens my cell door. "I know you are not asleep," I slow my breath. I hear his footsteps coming closer and closer until they stop by my bedside. I feel his breath as he leans over me. His cologne floods my nostril and bring more memories of us. "Wake up Vienna," he whispers and I can't help but shudder. I open my eyes to see his smiling face. He t

  • MATCH MADE IN HELL.   CHAPTER TWENTY NINE; REVEALING DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF US.

"How are you holding up?" Avan looks so concerned. It makes my heart break a little. "I'm good given the circumstances. "Please tell me you didn't tell them anything," he says. "There's nothing to tell, I didn't do it," he reaches out and places his hand over mine. I move my hand away. I am afraid the more care he shows me, the weaker I'll get. "I've gotten you a lawyer. He can make almost anything disappear, and I mean anything," I don't want to ask how he knows that. "Thank you." "You believe me though, right?" my voice breaks at the end. "Of course I believe you. Anything you tell me I'll believe," I can't help feel like crying. I hold it in and nod. His face curves into a tiny smile. The door opens to reveal a guy I have never seen before. "I am Alec, your lawyer," he is in an expensive suit. That must mean he is good at what he does or it's just something I desperate need to believe."I think you should leave," he looks at Avan who gives him a death stare. "I am not leaving,"
