LOGINIt's raining when I get up and continues to do so until i'm in my office building. I find Christine peeping into my office holding two cups of coffee. "What are we looking at?" she jumps obviously startled. "Oh, you're here," she says giving me a quick glance and goes back to looking into my office. "There's this hot guy in your office," I move to her side so I can take a look. It's not Avan. I feel a bit dissapointed. "I told you to let my patients wait for me outside until I get here," I try to dry myself before going in. "But he's not a patient, he said he's a detective and has some questions regarding a case he's working on." I help the detectives sometimes when they are trying to arrest an offender especially serial ones. Christine gives me one of the coffees and heads back to her desk as I go in.
The first thing I notice is, he is crude and lacks any sense of sophistication or class. However he is a handsome man with very manly features. "Good morning i'm Detective Kerrick Swindle," I offer my hand and he takes it promptly, "I'm Dr. Vienna Starr." He releases my hand immediately I say my name and does not linger like some men do. "I have not seen you around before," he nods and takes a seat. "I have just been transfered to Greencity recently and I was wondering if I could ask you some questions about the case i'm working on." I lean on my desk as he shuffles the files I hadn't notice before.
"So do you know Carrey Mark and Nate harris," I immediately tense up. This is not him asking for my input on a case, this is him questioning me like a person of interest. "Um, yes I went out with Nate once and Mark around three or four times," he looks at me intensely before nodding his head. "Why once? he wasn't good enough to score a second date?" he smiles but the tone of his voice suggests he's not joking. "No, he never got in touch with me after that date," he looks at his files. "When was this?" panic starts to rise inside me and I try not to let it on. "It was the night before last night," he looks at me intensely before closing his file."He never called because he never even got home. There's nothing similar between the murder of these two men, not the cause of death, not the time of death, not the location they are disposed off,not the..." Wait are you saying mark is dead too?" I feel sick. "Yes doctor and the only thing both men have in common was you were the last person to be seen with them alive," he stands and moves closer to me. Close enough for me to smell the mint from his breath."Why do you think that is?"
I am no longer a person of interest but their main suspect. I can tell by his questions but mostly by the way he is looking at me. "I have no idea why, detective," he continues to pierce my soul with his very blue eyes for what feels like ages. "Okay that's it for now but i have a feeling i'll be seeing you soon," he takes the cup of coffee that's been on my desk and before I can react he's out the door.
The rest of my day I have four appointments. After that I take the bus to the mini mart near my apartment. I need liquor badly especially if I am about to go to prison. The thought of that makes every part of me cringe. On top of all that Jade has a date tonight of all nights. I make my way to the drinks section. After i'm done selecting the drinks from fridge I try to close it. I realize someone is holding the refridgerator door. I look up to see Avan with sweatpants and a hoodie on. He looks at my hand and his lips curve into a small smile, "hard day, huh?" He bugs me, something about him feels off. I walk away leaving him holding the door.
After the cashier is done calculating my total I reach in for my wallet. A hand from behind me reaches around me and places a big can of ice cream next to my drinks. "Add that," I hear the familiar voice and I don't even have to turn to know who it is. "What do you think you're doing?" I look back to see him holding his tongue out like a kid who's just gotten away with something. "It'll be fifty dollars miss," the cashier says looking so uncomfortable with the whole situation. Before I can pay Avan hands her his card. I am about to protest but he gets a call and goes outside to receive it.
"Is this Swindle guy going to be an issue for us 'cause we can always get someone else," I walk next to him. He looks at me and I can swear for a second there he looked startled. But he covers it too well and too fast. "Wait, did you just say Swindle? Like detective Swindle," he looks at me with a confused look. "No, that was my assistant. What would I be talking about a detective for?" he looks like he's telling the truth. I begin to wonder if I am actually that stressed out that I am starting to hear my own things. I hand him his icecream. "I don't eat that stuff, too cold and gives me headaches," I return it to the shopping bag. "So why did you buy it?" he smiles. "You said you were having a hard day." "No I didn't." Yes you did." "No I didn't." We go on like that for a while that I don't even notice we begin walking towards my apartment.
"Fine, maybe you didn't but you're too easy to read Starr," I like it when he calls me that. It reminded me of my brother. I wish he was here. He could have taken care of the whole murder thing for me. God, how I miss him, how I miss all of them. "A hard day is an understatement. Because you're feeling so generous maybe I could hold on to this too,"I say showing him his gold card. "Yeah, why not?" he says giving me such intense eyes. "Everything that I have will one day belong to you anyway," he smiles and continue walking. I stand there trying to process what he'd just said. "Hey I was kidding take your card back," I say running to catch up to him. "Well I wasn't," we're now standing at the gate of my apartment. "Isn't this you?" he says pointing at the gate. "How do you know?" "Tell me why you had a hard day and i'll tell you how I know," I can't tell my patient who's maybe mentally unstable that his doctor may be going to prison for the murder of two men.
"Okay then, you keep your secrets and i'll keep mine," he smiles when he says it. But still a part of me feels like mine isn't a secret and if it is, it won't be for much longer. At least not to him. "So is this where we look at each other longingly and I lean in for a kiss?" that startles me and I take a step back. "This was not a date," he takes a step forward. "You're right that can't be our first date, so like a pre date or something like that?" he smiles and my cheecks feel hot. He smiles like he has achieved his goal and takes a step back.
Two black suvs come driving fast and stop by us. One man gets out and bows to him. "We've found her. She's abroad but we've found Lily Sir," he rushes in and punches the guy. The guy drops to the grond clenching his stomach. He looks back at me, "have a restful night and try not to worry so much. Things have a way of taking care of themselves." Avan enters one of the cars and they drive off. That name seems familiar. Lily, where have I heard it before? It is when I am in the shower that it finally dawns on me. Lily was my brother's fiancee and Jade's sister. Could it be the same Lily? And if so what does he want with her.
As I take one last look at myself, I can't help but feel excited. It has been very long since I have felt this way. Kerrick is in my living room waiting patiently for me. As I walk in the living room, he gets up from the couch. His eyes wander from my face down to my body, where they linger. Most of the time he is very hard to read, but not now. He doesn't even have to say it, but he does anyway. "Wow...just wow," I smile at his poorly worded compliment. "Are you ready?" I ask, admiring his new look. I have never seen him looking so official and elegant. "Yes, unless there is someting you would like to add," at his offer, I take a step closer to him. His tie is a bit crooked. I straighten it. I raise my eyes to his face and find that he is already looking at me. "You are ready now," I try not to stutter. He nods. I should step back. I really should, but I don't. I feel his hands come up to my back, his eyes never leaving mine. He leans in, and I don't move away. If I am being ho
I have dresses to go to parties, I do. But this feels like it requires something else. Something that only Jade can help me look for. That is why I am having a second glass of wine as I wait for her. I want to say she is never late, but that would be a lie.She pulls over in front of the wine bar. I watch as she gets out of the car and puts on her sunglasses. She parts her hair effortlessly using her hand. I can't stop staring at her, amazed by her presence. Believe me everyone here is looking at her. She is simply magnetic. "Sorry for keeping you waiting hon," she says, drinking the rest of my wine. "Where were you?" she looks around. "The other side of town. I have been trying my best to avoid spending any time at home," she explains. "Why? I thought with Rackel out of the house, you would like it," she takes her sunglasses off revealing bloodshot eyes. "Well, so did I," she looks exhausted. "Turns out my dad is really hard to live with, especially when he is alone. His attenti
I have thought of all the places she might be hiding, only to realize I don't know much about her. Other than the fact that she worked as John's secretary before she got married to him. Kerrick is insuferable when he is feeling frustrated. After the call with Jade ended with no better lead, he took me to work with him. We have been going through everything, and at this point I am almost sure I can recite what is in this damn files. "I need a break," he tears his eyes from what he is reading. He nods at my request before returning his attention the paperwork. "What are hoping to find?" I hadn't thought patnering up with him will be us cooped up in this office going over the same paperwork over and over again. "Something, anything," he closes the file he has been reading and takes another one. I can't be here any longer. It is almost twelve and it is the perfect time for me to head to the my office. I get up. He is too focused on what he is reading to even notice. I am worried he
It has been a week since I went to visit Kerrick in the hospital. I am back to seeing my patients and I have started to enjoy my quiet, undisturbed routine. I have had dinner with Jade twice this week at Rochelle's and it felt just like old times. There is still a lot in my head, but I have decided to deal with issues as they come. Today I had a lot of patients with barely an hour to spare for myself. When I finally finish updating my notes for the day, it is already past eleven and I can't wait to get home. The office building is empty and dark, except for the blinking security lights. I hurry into the elevator and press ground floor. My office is on the third floor. The elevator doors open at the second floor. A guy with a large frame and a hoodie gets on. He moves around me. I try to look at his face, but I only catch a glimpse of his chin. He leans at the elevator wall behind me and the hairs at the back of my neck stand. I can feel him staring at me. I give in and look beh
I am staring at my phone, trying to understand what I have just heard. Why would Kerrick be calling Rackel? Even more importantly why would he need another phone just to contact her? This is all very suspicious. I should visit Rackel soon. I hope her treatment is going well. Today has had enough troubles of its own. *********************************************It has been long since I have woken up this early. I have too much to do. I jump in the shower. I feel my whole body relaxing as the warm water hits me. I welcome it and allow my mind to wander. I don't want Kerrick to die, I know that for sure. But what I am starting to doubt is whether I can trust him. I should be able to get the answer to that by the end of the day if he is conscious. As for the guy I saw yesterday. I don't know what to think of him. Why come to me after shooting Kerrick? Is it just for the thrill or did he think I wouldn't recognize him?How is it that the more I uncover the more confused I get?The las
He is down in what feels like a second. There is commotion as everyone hides below their tables and chairs, leaving just me exposed. I am staring at the bleeding Kerrick, wondering what the hell is happening."KERRICK!". I am screaming like a mad woman. He is clasping tightly onto his chest. I remove my blazer and place it on his wound. "Hold on. The ambulance is on its way," I say, finally kneeling beside him. There is no fear in his eyes. That worries me more. He starts blinking. "Don't close your eyes, okay? You hear me," I am pressing the wound with as much force as I can. "Call the damn ambulance," I scream to no one in particular. "Hold on, you are going to be fine. Just hold on," I plead with him as he closes his eyes. My attention is on him that everything around us seems to disappear.I don't even see the ambulance and police cars that surround the place. "Move back," one of the paramedics says. "I can't. He will bleed out," my once white blazer is now covered with blood.
As he gets closer, my heart beats faster. Everyone is quiet. Looking at him in that pin drop silence, I feel so many emotions at once. He gets to where I am. I am looking down at him, bloody full of pain and all I can think of is I am grateful he is not dead. I am even more grateful I was not the
"Hello," I say as soon as she picks up. "Hey, girl. How have you been?" It's so nice to hear her voice. "I feel like I haven't talked to you in forever," I say, trying to push away what just happened from my mind. "I am still mad at you," Jade is someone who can't keep what she's feeling to hersel
I can't seem to keep my eyes off him. Something about him has changed, but I can't seem to place my fnger on it. "How have you been these days?" I ask, as he stops at a pedestrian crossing. "I have been good," he gives me a small smile. "Anything unusual happen when I wasn't around?" I probe. "You
I have been standing by my office window watching the car parked outside. It has been there for almost thirty minutes. No one has gotten out or entered the car since it was parked. I have seen the car parked outside my house at night before. I really thought it was Avan but after strangers started
