It's extremely hot and i put away my covers and roll to the other side of the bed. It had been a very tiresome day and had it not been for my mother's screams I believe I would have slept through it all. I wake up to smoke in my room. I open my bedroom door and see my parents through flames standing across the hall, outside their room. "Vienna, get out!" my father screams at me as I stand frozen. My room is beside the stair way, but my legs feel heavy. I look at them, I cannot leave them there. Logically I know there is no way they can make it across the fire to me, but i can't move. The fire is getting stronger and I start  feeling my skin itch from the intense heat. "Vienna Starr Kilmartin run!" this time it's my mother. I look at them as they hold each other. Whether it was to comfort each other or to keep each other from collapsing from the smoke I have never known. "It's okay love, go," my mother says softly between coughs. I turn to leave as they slide down to the floor together and I run until I am outside.

*********

"It's not okay,  it's not okay," I feel someone nudging me. I open my eyes to see Christine, my assistant bending over by my side. "Are you okay? seems like you were having another nightmare," she looks genuinely concerned and I am grateful for that. "I am good," I tell her as I get up from the couch and walk across the room to my chair. "Your two p.m is here," she says giving me a look of doubt and I reassure her with a small smile. She heads out before ushering in Mr. Avan Ray, my new patient.

He is the kind of person you cannot help but notice. He is over six foot tall and has a big build. His face has soft features, the kind that milds his threatening aura. His eyes are a shade of grey and emotionless. In overall he is a very handsome man and he carries himself as someone who is aware of that. I wonder what a seemingly perfect man is doing in a psychiatrist office. I smile as is my routine to try and make him feel more comfortable. He sits on the couch across from me, his eyes never leaving mine. I look down at my notes and try not to fidget.

"So Mr. Avan how are you this afternoon?" I ask and he laughs like It have said something funny. I watch him, trying to get a read out of him. All he does consistently is watch me. He does not look at me the way one would a beautiful lady, no he watches me. He watches me like one would an animal in a zoo. He looks at me like I am his source of amusement. I try my best to keep my wits about me through the whole session. By the end of it I have learned he is an only child. He had a older brother when he was young. According to him, his brother suddenly disappeared one day. He does not know what hapenned to him and his parents never talk about it. "I think i had something to do with it but i don't quite remember," he had sayed so casually and went on about his favourite meal like he had just said nothing. He enjoys watching my reaction towards him.

He is my last appointment for the day. I can not stop myself from thinking about him as I drive to 'Roselle's'. It is a joint we frequent, my bestfriend, Jade and I. We have known each other for over twenty years. For as long as I can remember her family and mine have always been close, that was before the fire tragedy that took my parents and my brother dying abroad. Jade took care of me. She worried aboout me and lacked subtle ways of showing it. I watch the entrance as I sip my wine. She eventually appears carrrying documents and smiling at everyone who'd look at her. We order dinner as soon as she sits. She tells me all about her day in so much detail as my mind keeps wandering off to Mr Avan.

After dinner her driver drops me off at my place. "You should stay with me tonight you know how your parents get when you go home so late," I offer. She chuckles lightly and pushes her hair slightly off her face. "I am a grown up there's nothing they can do to me even if I get home later than this," she says looking at her driver who tries to hide a smile. "Oh, they're travelling again huh," she looks down sheepishly and I laugh as I go in. "Love you," she shouts as they drive off.

I can not hold off my curiosity any longer. I search Avan Ray after washing up. After an hour of browsing the internet and what feels like a million controversies about him, only one thing is certain, he is the only heir of the richest tycoon. I feel intimidated and curious of why he chose me as his psychiatrist. I'm good at what I do, maybe even great but the kind of money and influence he has could get him the best not only in the state but also in the world. I shut off my computer as it starts to rain. It's past eleven and I can hardly keep my eyes open. I make myself honey water and sit by my bedroom window watching the rain. Just before I go to bed I notice a familiar car parked outside my gate. I can feel the stare without even seeing it.

I check the alarm system before getting in bed.  I can not help but think of the second most popular romor about him. Apparently his parents had insisted on him seeing a psychiatrist as a condition before they handed over the company to him. He had refused until recently when he agreed  only if he got to choose his own psychiatrist. So why me? That question bugs me as I finally drift off sleep.

"Hello," I say as soon as she picks up. "Hey, girl. How have you been?" It's so nice to hear her voice. "I feel like I haven't talked to you in forever," I say, trying to push away what just happened from my mind. "I am still mad at you," Jade is someone who can't keep what she's feeling to herself. I like that about her. "What did I do?" I try to recall the last time we talked. I can't think of anything I might have said to make her mad."You refused to let me join you on your trip," she says. "Oh that," I smile and adjust the covers on top of me. "Don't say it like that," I can imagine her scowling. "Like what?" I can't help but laugh. "Like it wasn't a big deal and I shouldn't be mad," I stop laughing. She is serious. "I am so sorry honey. I just needed some time alone, and believe me I regret not allowing you to join me," I mean it. "Why? What happened?"I tell her everything that happened. From meeting Garden, to receiving the package and running, to Avan saving me and finall

I can't seem to keep my eyes off him. Something about him has changed, but I can't seem to place my fnger on it. "How have you been these days?" I ask, as he stops at a pedestrian crossing. "I have been good," he gives me a small smile. "Anything unusual happen when I wasn't around?" I probe. "You were only there for two days and one night. What could possibly have happened?" I don't know what to say, but I am sure something about him is different. "How do you know Garden?" I ask. "We're friends, well sort of," he replies clearly not wanting to get into details. "Did you bribe him?" "No," he says without hesitation. "And,,," I start but he cuts me off. "Enough with the questions Starr," he sounds annoyed. We drive in silence for a while. I want to ask where we are going, but I am scared he might bite my head off. "What do you want to eat?" he finally speaks, breaking the silence which I appreciate. "Anything really," he nods. He puts on some music. I close my eyes and think of a s

He has a look of uncertainity."What do you suggest we do?" Just my luck, the one day I don't use a follow up car. "You should get off," he says looking back at them. He swerves, overtaking the cars in front of us. "When I make the next turn, I will slow down but just for a second, You jump out," he says. I have been in worse situations than this. But today I really wasn't in the mood for this. I was just from having lunch with my father. After all the training I have undergone he still won't let me take over his businesses unless I see a psychiatrist. Now this. "Sir?" my driver asks, as we approach the next turn. "Sure," I reply. I jump out immediately he makes the turn as planned. Luckily there are few business stalls at that corner and I am able to blend in with people. I watch as the cars followin

  • MATCH MADE IN HELL.   CHAPTER THIRTY ONE; THE JUDGE ON MY SIDE.

I did not hear him leave. I wake up to an empty bed and a lot of noise from the neighbouring cells. "Girl, do you always sleep talk?" the woman in the prison cell next to me asks.I cannot say that I just spend the night with the leading detective on my case. "Sometimes," I lie, hoping she'll just let it be. "So,,," she starts but is interrupted by Kelly who comes to get me. "Your lawyer is here," he says, opening the door for me to come out. "How was your night?" he asks, as we walk to the interrogation room. "It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be." "Good morning, Miss Kilmartin," Alec walks to me the moment he sees me. "Morning Alec," he smiles. It is the first time I have seen him smiling. "Let's talk in there," he leads the way to the interrogation room. "I didn't expect to see you today," I say, taking the seat I have become accustomed to. "You should expect to see me every day until we get you out of here," I am not sure how I feel about that. "So, I went to the home,"

  • MATCH MADE IN HELL.   CHAPTER THIRTY; FIRST NIGHT IN A PRISON CELL.

I am wishing for that hotel room right about now. I am on my own in a cold prison cell with a metallic toilet and a hard bed if I can even call it that. I try to sleep but I can't. Other than the utter discomfort of the bed, I am anxious and nervous about this whole situation. I know Avan told me not to worry and he'll take care of it but I can't help but worry. Just as desperate as he is to get me acquitted so is Kerrick to get me locked up for good. I hear the gate outside unlocking. I close my eyes and pretend I am sleeping. "It's me," it's Kerrick. Still with my eyes closed I turn to face the wall. I hope he goes away but instead he opens my cell door. "I know you are not asleep," I slow my breath. I hear his footsteps coming closer and closer until they stop by my bedside. I feel his breath as he leans over me. His cologne floods my nostril and bring more memories of us. "Wake up Vienna," he whispers and I can't help but shudder. I open my eyes to see his smiling face. He t

  • MATCH MADE IN HELL.   CHAPTER TWENTY NINE; REVEALING DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF US.

"How are you holding up?" Avan looks so concerned. It makes my heart break a little. "I'm good given the circumstances. "Please tell me you didn't tell them anything," he says. "There's nothing to tell, I didn't do it," he reaches out and places his hand over mine. I move my hand away. I am afraid the more care he shows me, the weaker I'll get. "I've gotten you a lawyer. He can make almost anything disappear, and I mean anything," I don't want to ask how he knows that. "Thank you." "You believe me though, right?" my voice breaks at the end. "Of course I believe you. Anything you tell me I'll believe," I can't help feel like crying. I hold it in and nod. His face curves into a tiny smile. The door opens to reveal a guy I have never seen before. "I am Alec, your lawyer," he is in an expensive suit. That must mean he is good at what he does or it's just something I desperate need to believe."I think you should leave," he looks at Avan who gives him a death stare. "I am not leaving,"
