"What is it?" Zephyr's voice sharpens instantly, Alpha authority snapping into place like armor.

"Calder traced the courier who delivered the box to a hotel. Minutes later, a woman was carried out of it." Drew sets the laptop on the desk and turns the screen toward us. "Security footage from three streets over. We got a partial face."

My heart slams against my ribs, and I step closer despite the way my legs still feel unsteady beneath me.

"Is it her?" I whisper. "Is it my mother?"

"We're getting

  • MATED TO MY BESTIE'S ALPHA DADDY   Chapter 114 - RAYLYNN

"You look like you've been plotting a murder," Zephyr says, pushing the door shut behind him with his hip, both hands full with my laptop bag, a paper sack that smells suspiciously like actual food, and a single, slightly crushed daisy he's clearly picked from the hospital courtyard out of pure, hopeless romanticism."I always look like this." I try for breezy and land somewhere closer to strangled. "It's my face.""Your face right now says 'I have committed, or am about to commit, a crime.'" He sets the laptop on the rolling table and drops into the chair beside my bed, studying me with the particular, unfair attentiveness of a man who has apparently memorized every version of my expressions. "What happened? Did Ivy bring you something fried and you're hiding the wrapper?""Worse." I force a laugh that comes out only slightly unhinged. "I ate all the hospital gelatin and I have no regrets.""Raylynn.""Zephyr.""You're deflecting.""I'm resting. You told me to rest." I gesture weakly

"I'm listening," I say, keeping my voice level despite the cold unease crawling up my spine. "What debt?""Ten years ago, my pack lost half our northern border in a single season." Osric settles into the chair beside my bed, utterly unhurried, a man accustomed to rooms rearranging themselves around his comfort. "A hostile coalition pressed down from the ridgelands, picked off our outer territories one by one, and the Council of that era did nothing but write concerned letters while my people died defending land that used to be safely ours.""What does that have to do with Zephyr?""Zion Blackwood offered warriors. Resources. Border patrols strong enough to finally push the coalition back where it belonged." His eyes don't waver from mine, flat and unflinching. "In exchange, he wanted something more permanent than a handshake. A blood tie between our packs, sealed the old way, binding enough that no future Alpha on either side could walk away from the alliance when it became inconvenie

Calantha's mouth opens, closes, and opens again, like she genuinely cannot decide whether to laugh or storm out, and for one glorious second the whole room holds its breath waiting to find out which."I came here in good faith," she finally manages, voice gone tight and clipped."You came here with lilies and a threat about your father's debt collection," I say, pushing myself further upright despite the pull in my chest. "Pick a lane.""Raylynn." Zephyr's hand tightens over mine, half amusement, half warning. "You're supposed to be resting.""I am resting. Resting and defending my relationship simultaneously. I contain multitudes."Ivy chokes on a laugh behind her hand, and even my grandmother's mouth twitches despite her best efforts at composure.Calantha's eyes narrow, sharp and calculating, before smoothing back into that practiced, unreadable poise. "You're very bold for someone who was clinically dead three days ago.""Dying tends to clarify priorities." I hold her gaze, steady

The growl is still vibrating in my throat when my eyes finally wrench open, raw and unfamiliar, like someone else borrowed my voice box for a moment and forgot to give it back properly. The ceiling above me is white, too bright, humming faintly with fluorescent light, and my whole body aches in that deep, bone-tired way that tells me I haven't moved in days. My throat is sandpaper. My chest feels like it's been stitched shut from the inside out, which, I realize slowly, it probably has."Ray?" Ivy's face appears above me so fast I barely register the chair scraping back. "Oh my god, Ray, you're awake, you're actually awake—""Ivy." My voice comes out a broken rasp, barely recognizable as my own. "Why does my throat hurt more than my chest?""Because you were growling." She laughs, wet and startled, swiping at her eyes with the back of her hand. "A full minute before you even opened your eyes. Scared the life out of all of us.""I was growling?" I blink, trying to make sense of that. "

Three days.Seventy-two hours of hospital coffee gone cold in paper cups, of counting the rise and fall of her chest through the thin blanket, of listening to machines mark time in a rhythm that still doesn't feel steady enough for my liking. I step back into the room with two fresh cups balanced in one hand, and I find it fuller than I left it.Ivy is curled into the chair nearest the bed, humming something tuneless under her breath while she braids and unbraids a strand of Raylynn's hair with careful fingers. Miriam sits across from her, upright and composed as always, though the dark circles under her eyes tell a different story than her posture does. Raylynn's mother, Estelle, perches on the edge of the window seat, thinner than she should be, her bandaged wrist resting in her lap, and beside her, upright and watchful despite everything, sits a woman with silver-streaked hair and sharp, knowing eyes.Dr. Orin."You look like you haven't slept in a week," she says, by way of greeti

  • MATED TO MY BESTIE'S ALPHA DADDY   Chapter 109 - NIX

I was not born slowly.I was born in one single, screaming second, dragged into existence out of a frightened girl's hatred and her mother's prayers and the particular, aching way small bodies learn to want to survive even after they've stopped believing they deserve to. I had no childhood of my own. I had only hers, every bruise and every silence folded into the marrow I was built from, and the very first thing I ever felt with my own four paws was the snow burning cold beneath them and the scent of my own blood steaming into the night air.The second thing I felt was him.He stood over her, over us, dagger lowered now, his eyes wide with something that should have been fear and wasn't quite there yet, not fully, not the way it was about to be. I knew him before I'd ever had a single thought of my own. I knew the shape of his cruelty, the exact weight of his hand, the precise cadence of his voice calling her useless, calling her a mistake, calling her anything but what she actually w
