Timothee's POV

I found Mercy sitting on a low garden bench near the fountain, her arms still wrapped around herself, staring at nothing in particular.

"Hey," I said, sitting down beside her carefully.

"Hey."

"Do you want to talk about it?" I asked, facing her

She let out a slow breath.

"She basically told me I'm ruining your life," Mercy said. "That you used to take everything seriously before I showed up. That she's known you since childhood and isn't going to just watch you throw everything a

Mercy's POVNobody moved for a long moment. Corin stood in the doorway like he owned the silence, and maybe out here, he did.I could feel the crown's mark on my palm again, that same warmth it had carried since the throne room, except now it pulsed instead of sat still, like it was reacting to something in the room beyond the four of us standing in it. I didn't know if that was a warning or a recognition. Maybe there wasn't a difference, not with something this old."You knew we were coming," I said."I've known for six years that someone would eventually come," he said. "I didn't know it would be you specifically. Though I suppose that makes sense, given what you're carrying."His eyes dropped to my palm, to the faint silver line the crown had left there, and something flickered across his face, gone too fast to name."You can see it," I said."I can feel it. The same way you can, I'd guess, though nobody's ever bothered to teach either of us what that feeling actually means." He st

  • MATERD TO THE SON OF THE DEMON KING   CHAPTER SIXTY SEVEN

Timothee's POVNobody slept well.I gave up trying somewhere around the third hour, when the fire had burned down to embers and the cold had worked its way past every layer I was wearing. Mercy was awake too, sitting a few feet away, knees pulled up, staring out at the dark like it might rearrange itself into an answer if she watched it long enough.Kaelen was still out, finally, his breathing slow and even against the wall he'd fallen asleep sitting up on. Azrael sat a distance off, silent, alert, the kind of stillness that made you forget he was there until you needed him not to be."You should sleep," I said."So should you."Fair enough. Neither of us moved."Can I ask you something," I said, "and you tell me the truth even if it's not what I want to hear?""Always.""Do you think he's going to try to kill me?"She didn't answer right away, which told me more than any answer would have."I think he's spent twenty years being erased by our family," she said finally. "I think whatev

  • MATERD TO THE SON OF THE DEMON KING   CHAPTER SIXTY SIX

Mercy's POVWe searched the rest of the building until the light gave out completely, and what we found only made the picture worse.A stack of letters, unsent, addressed to a woman who'd been dead for years, judging by the dates. Some of them were only a few lines. Others ran for pages, dense with handwriting that started controlled and ended jagged, like whoever wrote them had started calm and lost the thread of that calm somewhere in the middle. I didn't read them closely. It felt like trespassing on something that wasn't meant for anyone but the two people it was written between, one of whom couldn't answer anymore.A child's drawing, faded almost to nothing, of two boys standing in front of a castle that looked nothing like the one Timothee had grown up in and everything like the one from old storybooks, the kind meant for children who still believed kings were kind by default.Underneath the drawing, tucked into the same box, I found a small collection of pressed flowers, brittl

  • MATERD TO THE SON OF THE DEMON KING   CHAPTER SIXTY FIVE

Timothee's POVThe first building we passed had a wolf carved into the doorframe, worn down by weather until it was barely a shape anymore, more suggestion than image."Old pack marker," Azrael said, not slowing the truck. "Every den used to have one. Tells you whose territory you're standing in, or used to be standing in, before everyone who cared about that stopped existing."I pressed my hand to the window glass without meaning to, some old instinct rising up in me that I didn't have a name for. There was something about this place that felt less like a ruin and more like a wound that had never fully closed, the kind of land that remembered every foot that had ever walked across it.The town itself, if it had ever been a town, was mostly gone. Foundations without walls. A well with no bucket. One building near the center that still had most of its roof, and even from a distance, something about it made the hair on my arms stand up."That's where we start," Mercy said, already climb

  • MATERD TO THE SON OF THE DEMON KING   CHAPTER SIXTY FOUR

Mercy's POVWe left before the palace fully woke, which meant we left before anyone could talk us out of it.Kaelen had argued for waiting, for gathering more guards, more supplies, more of anything that might make the trip feel less like four people driving straight at a problem none of us understood yet. Mercy had shut that down within a minute of him raising it. More people meant more chances for word to spread before we were ready for it to. Whatever we found out west, she wanted to find it quietly.I hadn't argued. I'd learned a long time ago that arguing with Mercy once she'd decided something was less about changing her mind and more about wasting breath neither of us had time for.Kaelen drove the first stretch, some old truck he'd pulled from a garage nobody used anymore, the kind of vehicle that belonged to a version of the kingdom that still remembered how to be poor. Timothee sat in the back with me, one hand resting on the burned photograph fragment like it might disinteg

  • MATERD TO THE SON OF THE DEMON KING   CHAPTER SIXTY THREE

Timothee's POVMy father was gone by the time the guards let us out of that room. Not gone the way people meant when they whispered it in the halls, ducking their heads like the word itself might summon him back. Gone the way a man disappears when he still has somewhere left to run and enough pride left to try it."He took the east passage," Kaelen said, meeting us outside the door with his jaw set in a way I recognized from every crisis I'd watched him manage since I was a boy. "Two guards went with him. Loyal ones. The kind who don't ask questions.""How long ago?" Mercy asked."An hour. Maybe less.""Then we go after him.""Mercy—""He knows where Corin is," she said, already moving down the hall, the crown's mark still pale against her palm like a brand that hadn't finished healing. "You think he's running because he's scared of us? He's running because he's scared of what happens if Corin finds out we know before he can control the story."I caught up to her in three strides. "Yo
