“Gustav,” I breathed out, still very skeptical of his presence.

This pivotal moment would test the guardian bond. With bated breath, I stared at his hand, contemplating taking it. He noticed the alarm on my face and put both of his hands up in a surrender pose.

“I mean you no harm, Kókkino,” he said, cocking his head, slightly concerned.

Ruffling and a dull creak of dry hinges sounded across the room. My eyes found Vaheed pinned to the decorative, backlit stone wall feature.
