-VALEN’S POV-

When Raina lifted her left hand from her shoulder, a deep red print of my palm blistered her honeyed skin. Her doleful blue eyes questioningly pierced into mine so deep that my heart prickled.

Simmering with rage, I decided to draw the line here. I went closer to her and roughly nudged Vaheed out of the way with my shoulder. I took her hands into mine and she screamed again. It was a cry of pain.

“Ahh!” Her shrill echoed high and wild through the noisy rain as she tore herself from my grasp as though I was acid or a contamination.

Thermal heat from my hands burnt her wrist.

Although I fumed with suppressed anger because of Vaheed, bewilderment superseded and I gazed at my palms and wondered what had happened. All I did was touch her. Why is she being bruised by my contact? This was not how it was supposed to be. We are mates and our touch created the most superb sensation. How is it that my hands burned her, instead? It baffled me.

“What’s wrong with you? Stay away from her!” Vaheed protectively shielded Raina from me by standing in front of her, facing me.

“Let me heal her.” I stepped forward, outstretching my hand.

“No!” Shivering, Raina turned her left side away from me with a ducked chin.

I halted my stride from the rejection. It was like being slapped hard in the face. I barely repressed the temptation to punch Vaheed's face. Had it not been for Raina's presence, my wolf wanted my brother's blood. He ought to know his place. Raina’s mine. Mine to care for, to love and to hold forever. I was the one to be her refuge and support.

Nothing compared to the gulf in my heart caused by anguish and stubborn pride. The reprehensible distance was a chasm that perpetually divided us.

“Clearly you need to be healed. Don’t tell me to stay away.” I persisted with passionate conviction but caught something in her expression. It was one that feared me.

“She doesn’t need you to hurt her again!” Vaheed gritted with two arms wide open to form a barricade as she stood behind him. She shuddered erratically while staring at her trembling hands as the red blotch mushroomed.

“If you don’t move out of the way I’m going to send you to hell, brother.” I insisted with the equanimity of a man who had a well-earned reputation for ruthlessness. Despite that nagging conscience that reminded me that killing him would devastate our family.

Obstinately, Vaheed stood squarely in a threatening stance. “Raina needs medical attention and if you care about her, you’ll let me take her to our grandmother.”

White, hot fury surged and I was going to dissect him but she glanced at me, terrified, and shook her head. Settling in a gentle menace, I bit my lower lip and told myself to cool it. Seeing her in pain constricted my heart.

“Raina, please ―” I implored with a soft smile, tinging with desperation. My heart panged to know that I unintentionally had hurt her. I wanted to stroke her wet burgundy streaks and soothe her. Whatever was wrong, I would fix it if she gave me the chance.

“Don’t come any closer.” Her voice quivered as she spoke and I felt her hot tears even though the raindrops dabbed all of her. Frantically, she shook her head that her burgundy hair flew in a wild arc around her neck and face. Harnessing with fear and unwillingness, she tugged my brother’s soaked gray t-shirt. “Vaheed, take me home.”

“I’m sorry, Raina. I never meant to hurt you.” I had to let her know before she left.

Though her ashen face slowly nodded, despair and resignation conveyed a stark withdrawal.

“I…….” My words trailed off as their backs turned.

They departed the awful alley with Vaheed holding onto my mate to assist her gait. To the agony that was clawing at me, the blinding, black fury at the idea of her being cared for by him. I wanted to shout, but refrained. I did not kick anything, though I ached to. I considered blowing up the nearby buildings, but decided against it. Inane gibberish buzzed as a result of the controlled anarchy I was experiencing.

Thunder crashed furiously. Sadness poured from my thudding heart. A tiny seed of fear germinated within me. Spider lightning splurged. A raging inferno of jealousy also wanted to be counted in. The deliberately cool downpour could not slough away the remnant of blood from my bleeding heart.

I had to know if she was okay. A new plan formed and it was to start being closer to her. It was time to stop pretending. It seemed a lifetime since I've been doing it. The inability to touch her left a disturbingly distinct impact on my brain and drained away all the air so that it was impossible to breathe.

My head was spinning wildly.

How could she leave with him? The disbelief left me standing in the never-ending rain feeling beaten down by nature, heartbroken by my mate, and flabbergasted by the wounding effect of our connection. Now more than ever, her heart was definitely tucked away from me. Numb and hollowness set in as she disappeared out of view.

My sweet bluebella, Raina. She was always so close, yet achingly out of reach. Simultaneously, taunting me with her nearness and her distance.

I wondered what would happen on her eighteenth birthday when she was to both acquire her wolf and feel the effect of the mate bond. Would I be able to touch her then, or would it still be painful for her?

The mating process where I would mark and mate her cannot take place if we are unable to touch. That reality came with a powerful bitter sense of loss. Were we unfortunate soulmates?

No.......

I won’t lose her.

Out of nowhere, the intensity of the flashes increased and lit the vacant streets around me like pepper lights. Ball lightning formed in an electrical storm. In perplexity, my eyes darted heavenward to behold the skyrmion of ten balls of light in proximity about the size of a basketball moving slowly parallel to the earth and exploding, leaving behind a sulfurous smell.

This was bad. Both my hands went to the sides of my head as a circuit of thoughts powered the motor gears in my head. An awry sensation emerged in my bones.

Something was devastatingly wrong.

DEVIN’S POVThe sigh Penn released sounded so defeated. She tore her eyes from me and slipped out of the bed. She picked up her clothes from the mattress, and my heart clenched in disappointment. This time, she didn't take the sheet with her. She let me feast on her luscious, naked beauty while putting on her bra. My lips parted, craving her round, soft breasts. They teased me like juicy, low-hanging fruit. I was practically salivating. I couldn’t move my eyes.My erection throbbed, straining against my stomach, roaring for her tightness. All the muscles in my body stiffened, and I closed my eyes to restrain myself. My wolf stirred inside of me, wanting our hands on her again, but she was so mad and hurt that I felt hauntingly guilty for dragging her into my problems. Opening my eyes to find her, she was still by the bedside, now in her panties. My eyes trailed over the matching black underwear, which highlighted the defined curves of her waist and hips. All the memories of her soft

DEVIN’S POVI awakened to a tingling surge in my body. I smiled and drew in her heavenly sweet pea and wild berries scent. It was the best fragrance ever, one that intoxicated me to no end. As I cracked my eyes open in the dark room, I stared at my mate. We lay on our sides with our bodies curled, facing each other beneath the covers. Her soft, slender hand rested against my hair while my arm wrapped loosely around her back, holding her close as her eyes fluttered open.At first, she smiled tenderly at me, her cheeks taking on a lovely blush. Then she gasped. Her eyes widened, and she bolted up. “Shit.” “That’s not what you called me last night.” My voice was groggy and rough as I pushed myself up on one elbow. “That’s not what we did either.”Penn shot out of bed, clinging to the blue sheet that wrapped around her naked body, pulling the rest of it away from mine, inch by inch until it left me completely exposed. She lit up her palm, making it glow to cast a dim-yellow light into

RAINA’S POVBreakfasts were the worst. The front door barely clicked shut behind Valen before I rushed toward the powder room. The harsh burn in my throat hardly gave me enough time to reach it before I dropped to my knees."Urk!" I gripped the edge of the toilet as another wave of nausea tore through me, leaving my eyes watering and my body trembling."Oh, Luna." Meera's light footsteps hastened behind me, and she flicked on the light. Before she could give me any assistance, the doorbell rang."Go," I merely managed to say before more content spilled out. "Urk!"She hurried away, and I pushed the door shut, not wanting anyone to see me like this. Not long after, I heard the bathroom door open.“Raina?”I snapped my head up and said hoarsely, “Grandma?”Based on the strange darkness that was cast over the pack, I was surprised she came. Nevertheless, I was happy because I hadn’t seen her in a while.Grandma Nitya’s smile vanished when she saw me. At first, she hitched at the threshold

RAINA’S POVAzara came up to me. She laid a supportive hand on my shoulder and gave me a sympathetic squeeze. “I informed your Dad. He’s on it.”At the mention of my father, I mind-linked him immediately.“Kiddo, I've sent a team of Elites to gather Intel. The rest will be on standby. We'll move out if we need to. Leave it in my hands,” Dad said somberly. “I know it’s hard, but stay where you are.”I began pacing back and forth with my heart pounding in my throat. “It'll be hours before Intel gets back, and hours for backup to reach Valen.”“That's how this works, kiddo,” Dad’s reply softened with compassion. “I'll keep you posted.”It was not enough.I know he was trying. They all were, but I was going crazy!Valen, Gustav, Devin, and the others could be deep in battle right now, needing us.I ran a hand through my hair in yet another fit of aggravation."Selene," I prayed slowly, calmly, needing to pacify my intensely fretting heart. "Goddess... Selene..." But for some reason, saying

RAINA’S POVFor one terrifying breath, I was somewhere else, seeing something so horrific I couldn’t understand. It struck my mind like a thunderclap when flashes of Valen projected into my head, and I saw multiple shadows moving between trees. All of them were going after him.Fear seized me, leaving my mind reeling and my chest burning from a crushing pressure.“Aah. Not them.” I stumbled back, gasping and struggling to catch my breath. “Haa…”I stiffened, and if two pairs of hands hadn't grabbed me, I would have fallen over.Oh mercy me. I cursed and blinked a couple of times to get rid of the flashes blocking my gaze.Muffled voices buzzed in my ears as I blinked hard, shoving away the remnants of the vision. Gustav's face was the last I saw before it all faded.Very slowly, I realized I was back at the hearthring with everyone’s puzzled stare pinned on me.I held my chest and rubbed my temple, trying to piece those images together and make sense of it. Although my eyes swept over

How could he expect me not to worry? There was a gaping hole in my chest, being so far from him. Thinking about him made waves of aching longing spread throughout my body.“Why can’t we figure out how to power the sword up?” Azara asked in frustration, sitting around the table in the basement, snapping me out of my reverie. Her hand paused, her fingers crimping the musty pages of the books. She reached for the tray in the center of the table and picked up a slice of Grams’ well-liked batch of red velvet cheesecake brownies to munch on.“Keep going, I’m sure we’ll find something,” I encouraged her kindly, peering down into my own giant leather-bound black book, right across from her. After many failed attempts to destroy the medallion with the sword, we gave up.
