Mag-log in-VALEN’S POV-
When Raina lifted her left hand from her shoulder, a deep red print of my palm blistered her honeyed skin. Her doleful blue eyes questioningly pierced into mine so deep that my heart prickled.
Simmering with rage, I decided to draw the line here. I went closer to her and roughly nudged Vaheed out of the way with my shoulder. I took her hands into mine and she screamed again. It was a cry of pain.
“Ahh!” Her shrill echoed high and wild through the noisy rain as she tore herself from my grasp as though I was acid or a contamination.
Thermal heat from my hands burnt her wrist.
Although I fumed with suppressed anger because of Vaheed, bewilderment superseded and I gazed at my palms and wondered what had happened. All I did was touch her. Why is she being bruised by my contact? This was not how it was supposed to be. We are mates and our touch created the most superb sensation. How is it that my hands burned her, instead? It baffled me.
“What’s wrong with you? Stay away from her!” Vaheed protectively shielded Raina from me by standing in front of her, facing me.
“Let me heal her.” I stepped forward, outstretching my hand.
“No!” Shivering, Raina turned her left side away from me with a ducked chin.
I halted my stride from the rejection. It was like being slapped hard in the face. I barely repressed the temptation to punch Vaheed's face. Had it not been for Raina's presence, my wolf wanted my brother's blood. He ought to know his place. Raina’s mine. Mine to care for, to love and to hold forever. I was the one to be her refuge and support.
Nothing compared to the gulf in my heart caused by anguish and stubborn pride. The reprehensible distance was a chasm that perpetually divided us.
“Clearly you need to be healed. Don’t tell me to stay away.” I persisted with passionate conviction but caught something in her expression. It was one that feared me.
“She doesn’t need you to hurt her again!” Vaheed gritted with two arms wide open to form a barricade as she stood behind him. She shuddered erratically while staring at her trembling hands as the red blotch mushroomed.
“If you don’t move out of the way I’m going to send you to hell, brother.” I insisted with the equanimity of a man who had a well-earned reputation for ruthlessness. Despite that nagging conscience that reminded me that killing him would devastate our family.
Obstinately, Vaheed stood squarely in a threatening stance. “Raina needs medical attention and if you care about her, you’ll let me take her to our grandmother.”
White, hot fury surged and I was going to dissect him but she glanced at me, terrified, and shook her head. Settling in a gentle menace, I bit my lower lip and told myself to cool it. Seeing her in pain constricted my heart.
“Raina, please ―” I implored with a soft smile, tinging with desperation. My heart panged to know that I unintentionally had hurt her. I wanted to stroke her wet burgundy streaks and soothe her. Whatever was wrong, I would fix it if she gave me the chance.
“Don’t come any closer.” Her voice quivered as she spoke and I felt her hot tears even though the raindrops dabbed all of her. Frantically, she shook her head that her burgundy hair flew in a wild arc around her neck and face. Harnessing with fear and unwillingness, she tugged my brother’s soaked gray t-shirt. “Vaheed, take me home.”
“I’m sorry, Raina. I never meant to hurt you.” I had to let her know before she left.
Though her ashen face slowly nodded, despair and resignation conveyed a stark withdrawal.
“I…….” My words trailed off as their backs turned.
They departed the awful alley with Vaheed holding onto my mate to assist her gait. To the agony that was clawing at me, the blinding, black fury at the idea of her being cared for by him. I wanted to shout, but refrained. I did not kick anything, though I ached to. I considered blowing up the nearby buildings, but decided against it. Inane gibberish buzzed as a result of the controlled anarchy I was experiencing.
Thunder crashed furiously. Sadness poured from my thudding heart. A tiny seed of fear germinated within me. Spider lightning splurged. A raging inferno of jealousy also wanted to be counted in. The deliberately cool downpour could not slough away the remnant of blood from my bleeding heart.
I had to know if she was okay. A new plan formed and it was to start being closer to her. It was time to stop pretending. It seemed a lifetime since I've been doing it. The inability to touch her left a disturbingly distinct impact on my brain and drained away all the air so that it was impossible to breathe.
My head was spinning wildly.
How could she leave with him? The disbelief left me standing in the never-ending rain feeling beaten down by nature, heartbroken by my mate, and flabbergasted by the wounding effect of our connection. Now more than ever, her heart was definitely tucked away from me. Numb and hollowness set in as she disappeared out of view.
My sweet bluebella, Raina. She was always so close, yet achingly out of reach. Simultaneously, taunting me with her nearness and her distance.
I wondered what would happen on her eighteenth birthday when she was to both acquire her wolf and feel the effect of the mate bond. Would I be able to touch her then, or would it still be painful for her?
The mating process where I would mark and mate her cannot take place if we are unable to touch. That reality came with a powerful bitter sense of loss. Were we unfortunate soulmates?
No.......
I won’t lose her.
Out of nowhere, the intensity of the flashes increased and lit the vacant streets around me like pepper lights. Ball lightning formed in an electrical storm. In perplexity, my eyes darted heavenward to behold the skyrmion of ten balls of light in proximity about the size of a basketball moving slowly parallel to the earth and exploding, leaving behind a sulfurous smell.
This was bad. Both my hands went to the sides of my head as a circuit of thoughts powered the motor gears in my head. An awry sensation emerged in my bones.
Something was devastatingly wrong.

VALEN’S POVOur mouths shifted sensually over each other's. My tongue moved around the tender moistness of her mouth, dancing with hers, tasting and tantalizing. The feel of her soft lips washed away all the fears and worries that had been on my mind for the last hour.Tingles shot through my entire body, craving everything we were. Our pull, the connection, everything that made us perfect for each other. I slid my hand down over her buttocks to draw her pelvis up against mine. After a few moments, I could feel her relax into me. Her arousal hit me hard, which made me want more of her lips, but I knew I couldn't do anything.Seconds later, I pulled back with a pant and made sure she had her eyes locked on mine. Even wet and sad, they still captured my soul. That pull. The attraction. The devotion. I’d be mad to screech out to another woman.“Bluebella, I haven’t had any other females in all my life since I found out you were my mate.” My hand moved to the side of her face, smoothing o
VALEN’S POVImpossible. My eyes narrowed, searching Raina’s face. She had expected an immediate answer, but my mouth tightened as I remained silent. She creased her forehead in disappointment as we held each other’s gaze. Then a pained expression crossed her face, and her breathing picked up, chest heaving. She was angry. My heart squeezed, feeling all that emotion firing through the bond. When she could not stand the silence, she crossed her arms. “Why are you making that face? How bad is it? You want her, is that it?”“No, baby, it’s not that,” I began, edging closer to her, reaching out a hand. “It’s just, oww…”I rubbed the area that she hit when she twisted around to grab a pen from the table and threw it at me.“Like seriously, you almost gave me a heart attack,” she snapped, letting out a shaky breath.I closed my eyes and heaved a sigh, irked by that grave-crawling parasite, Jiya. I knew she’d be a problem, and I had a feeling that this was just the start of our troubles. I cu
RAINA’S POV“Are you ready for the first one?” Heidi beamed. She was more excited than I was.She picked up one of the exquisite notecards. It was from the pile of gifts I received from the Bolivian and Ugandan Alphas and pack members. As soon as I woke up, Meera drew my attention to the receiving hall downstairs. Azara and Heidi were there giving orders on where to place all the gifts they had sent me.I wasn’t sure how long I stood in shock before I actually believed those wolves could still support me. And now here we are in the formal, modern-style parlor at the pack house.Heidi waved the card over the black tulip table where we sat by the window, saying. “It’s from Alpha Kaelican of the Salvajes Dientes Pack in La Paz.”Sunlight slipped through the tall, black, parted, curtained windows that ran along high white walls.Omegas moved around us, dusting and tidying up the black and white furniture that occupied the room with soft couches, cushioned chairs, and a dark wooden table in
VALEN’S POV“Hey buddy, what you got going on here, hmm?” Devin’s low, gravelly voice poked through my sleep haze. “I don’t think sleeping out here on the pavement outside your parents' house was a good idea.”My freshly awakened eyes blinked, squinting from the subtle rays of the morning sun that peeked through the tall tree between the two houses across from me.“Urgh,” I groaned, turning my face to the side from the blinding light.Devin was bent over me in a white tee and green trousers, nudging my bare shoulder. Thank the goddess he woke me.After Dad threw me out in the wee hours, I stood out here shirtless in gray, ripped joggers, and watched him and Mom rush out to go find Venus.Seems I really did black out after that.“You know, normal people don’t abandon a warm bed and a gorgeous Luna to be beaten up by cold concrete. That’s tragic, Val.” Devin reached down to grasp my bicep, helping me to stand. “Argh. You’re heavier than a truck.”I pushed myself off the hard ground with
VALEN’S POV“Help you with what?” Devin sneered down at her. “You dug your own grave. Do you want a faster deportation back to hell? Because I can do that. We both know all this pleading is just like a rainy day ring.”“You can't let me die. Save me,” Mercedes’ words begged, but her tone was demanding. “I'll let you mark me. It's what you wanted, isn't it? We’ll finally be together.”Devin aggressively tugged his foot out of her grasp. “You framed Cher. You could have gotten her killed. You made me hate her. All you think about is yourself. I'm over this bond.”Jiya let out a dry, pitiful laugh. “My Alpha, and members of the council, Mercedes used blood magic to infuse Raina’s blood and the sacred dust from the relics into her body. She thought it would make her shine, but as you can see, she flopped her own show.”“And you didn't?” Grandpa Victor asked suspiciously. At least one of them was sensible.“Of course not,” Jiya vouched solemnly, her tone cautious, “I came to make things rig
VALEN’S POVJiya’s chin-length auburn hair turned snow-white, wafting and gliding around her face as her elevated body shone like an awakening calamity. Respawned.Transfixed, I gulped and ignored the hard slap from Devin that hit my chest.Soon, every voice around me had faded. When Jiya’s blue-lit brown eyes hit mine, she sucked the breath out of me.I clutched my chest and sank my teeth into my lower lip, drawing blood and swallowing that one word that was fighting my being to be uttered. The crowd had gotten larger. Everyone fell to their knees, bowing to her in obeisance to the moon goddess. Everyone except the royal clique, who stood baffled with skepticism."Faking her death wasn't dramatic enough, she decided to come back with a viral glow," Theo grumbled, scratching his head.“We accept the chosen Luna Queen,” a dominant Alpha yelled, and the others repeated it.“All hail Queen…uh…” One Alpha fumbled with his praise, his voice lowering in uncertainty. “Um…your name, my queen?
-RAINA’S POV- A panting, sweat-dripping, and naked Devin showed up at the mouth of the cave. “What happened here?” He surveyed the area and sighted no enemies. “Not now. I’ll explain later.” Valen was too busy panicking with me in agony to dive into details. “Let’s go back.” “But I just got here,” D
-VALEN’S POV- “Devin, Raina’s shifting. I’m taking her to the east forest.” I mind-link my Beta after hoisting my whimpering mate in my arms. Doctor Krause stepped to the side and bowed his head as I teleported. “How is that possible?” Devin inquired, worry hidden in his voice. “How the fuck should
-RAINA’S POV- Not everything that contains sugar is sweet. Not everything that comes from above is a blessing. “It would put you in a better position if your mating was done immediately,” Alpha Vance stated in a calm tone. He was deflecting things to make it look like it was in my best interest. “I
-VALEN’S POV- Raj, Dad, and Devin, in wolf form, approached us. Devin’s mustard yellow with grey ear tips was the first to come near us, while Raj’s fully oxblood wolf and Dad’s larger alpha-black wolf observed us. Hera spared them no any attention. Her intention was to get enough of me, as much as
