RAINA’S POV

Future Valen was sitting on a worn couch with a white-haired woman. Snow. She curled up on his lap with her head on his pectoral and his arms wrapped around her. Her cheek nuzzled his chest, and her battered shoulders rose as she breathed deep, taking in his scent.

They weren’t happy.

They were comforting each other in a dingy den, with other grieving people around them, hugging in huddles. From the looks of it, I gathered that the underground bunker had evolved into a small city since above ground was crawling with furcans.

Worse still, it hurt seeing them together, him without me.

Somewhere along the line, Valen moved on. Our matebond, shotgunned.

My heart shattered all over again, my chest in pain like a knife was stuck in it. I sank on the stool, my shoulder slumped like Bell’s palsy hit my entire body.

Tears welled in my eyes, and I kept them low. I get the gist. She hasn’t mentioned my death. She didn’t have to. I knew how it was going to end.

RAINA’S POVA blonde girl who looked barely sixteen ran. Her brown clothes were tattered, and her face streaked with dirt and tears. She stumbled, nearly falling, then kept going, her breath ragged, hope burning bright and fragile in her eyes.“Get out of there, girl. Run.” I endorsed desperately, already moving. “Hurry! You run until you can’t run anymore.”The girl almost made it. A thrill ran through me thinking she might really escape, which quickly soured when four furcans stepped out from behind a black transport truck, blocking her path. She skidded to a stop and spun abruptly, but now faced another set of oncoming furcans. She was trapped. They closed in, slow and menacing, like they’ve done this a hundred times before.“Stop it!” I screamed, breaking into a run.My heart hammered as I reached for the girl, but slammed into an invisible wall.Artemis abruptly grabbed my arm, pulling me back.I yanked myself free, going forward to pound against the unseen barrier, sobbing. “Ple

RAINA’S POVSeeing my confusion, Selene leaned closer to the glass and diverted, “Let’s get to why you are here. I know the wish burning in your heart. I’ve always known. And yes—today, I will grant you that wish.”Hearing that, my heart didn’t leap. It was because I questioned her sincerity. Was she being real? Or was this a con? The presence of Artemis alone was enough to make me wonder if this would turn out to be any good.If the moon goddess lacked the power to acquit herself, she could also lack the power to fulfill my simple wish.“I will.” Selene’s voice echoed like it came from the inside of my chest.Wait. Did she just read my mind?“You didn't have to bring me here just for a wish. A dream would have been nice, you know,” I groaned, scrunching my face. “Everyone is going to ask me about you when I go back. What will I tell them, hmm?” I continued sarcastically. “Oh, I'm sorry the moon goddess can't govern the realm right now. You see, that's because she's inmate number five

RAINA’S POV“Poom!” The stone door sealed behind me like a vigorous rap of a gavel.Heart hammering, I froze. Was this how gods met mortals now? This was not the temple. Nor was it a place that anyone would expect to meet the ethereal moon goddess.I scratched the side of my head and swirled around for a reality check, scanning the entire brooding space. Something must be wrong with my vision.Nothing changed. No celestial chamber, marble pillars or anything divine popped out.I anticipated moon craters, regolith, and a black sky with a picture of a global earth in the distance, with Selene in her glory. This wasn’t that.So what was this low-grade place? An escape room, maybe? Was that the game this time?My stomach dropped. “What a letdown.”I was inside a wide prison visitation room, of bare white-gray walls. There were no windows or doors, but it was sparkling clean and unoccupied. Instead of constellations, star-shaped fluorescent lights hummed overhead. A thick pane of reinforce

There is no loss.VALEN’S POVI turned away from them and pressed my forehead onto the cold stone wall, breathing hard, shaking.“Your Luna is on the line,” I snapped with irritation. “I should be in there with her.”“Hear my voice of wisdom, Alpha. She’s doing what she has to do.” Jason approached me and placed a heavy hand on my shoulder. “No cross-planet journey is far enough to break the pull that will bring her back to you.”Maybe. But the terror didn’t vanish because she was my entire damn world, and that door had swallowed her whole. Who knew what she could be facing? And she was all alone. I couldn’t stop worrying about her.“I can’t just do nothing.” I glanced at him over my shoulder.“There’s a head! Somebody, hurry!” A distressed she-wolf cried, drawing their attention.Azara and Penn must have rushed to her side because I heard footsteps running away from me, and their voices

VALEN’S POVRaina and I halted and exchanged a knowing look. We had to help them. We changed direction to get to them. Furcans got on our tails, darting after us.The Worgens took human form.Jarvaldo grabbed both Penn and Azara by the throats and threw them like pullip dolls, straight toward Gustav. He caught the girls with a grunt, saving them from a dreadful crash. He set them on their feet before he lunged forward and tackled Jarvaldo, giving him a final high kick under his chin. Jarvaldo’s body went up off the ground and then crashed down to the floor. The Worgens froze, gaping at Gustav. Shock washed over me for a moment. Well, I’ll be damned. That crab-louse needed to decide which side he was really on.Rovell ground his teeth angrily. “You pegging rat!”“Traitor,” Seth hissed in disbelief. “Again?”“Interesting reference. A bit dated, though, and kind of ironic coming from you.” Gustav shrugged, narrowing his eyes to a menacing degree. “I’ve never betrayed the side I chose.”J
