-RAINA'S POV-

Having a late lunch, Dad and Alpha Vance sat in the Captains’ Lounge on the second floor, which was reserved only for them. It was a fine day for sure, ambient and kind to the eyes as the sun's rays lit up the entire area in a crisp brightness that complemented the spacious seating arrangements and beautifully decorated tables and utensils sparkled in its glare.

Pissed and heartbroken, my dour mood ruined the day for me. I stormed to an empty table and pulled a mink-gray bergère chair from it to theirs. Its gold metal legs rumple the moss-green carpet that covers the complete floor. Plopping down like an overworked woman who has had a bad day, the gloominess aired out with a prominent scowl on my face.

"What's with the attitude?" Dad curiously asked while chewing, fixing his chestnut-brown eyes on me.

When my eyes landed on Valen who entered the room and slid the triple sliding glass doors closed, I rolled my eyes and frowned deeper. His scent intoxicated me to no end

  • MATES: REMNANTS OF A BETRAYED BOND    CHAPTER 318 - EXODUS

VALEN’S POVPlagued by his words, Theo and I exchanged an unsettling look. That's not right, though. But then again, Werewolves enjoyed traveling, and our species would naturally be drawn to anything Selene-related. So I dismissed whatever he was hinting at with Elder Jacob as him trying to stir up conflict, probably to turn us against each other and distract us from him.In no time, I had Gustav violently thrown into a chair in Penn’s basement. Thaines and Jason were there when I arrived with Theo. Devin joined us right after, and we formed a semi-circle in front of the brute.Penn acted quickly, flicking her wrist to work her magic. Belts burst from the backrest and the seat to strap him down.Gustav smirked, his eyes burning with arrogance. “Your little spells won’t do much for you, witch.” He shifted his gaze to Devin, his brows raised, and he taunted, “Is she your tight squeeze or just a bed dribbler?”“Say that again, bastard,” Devin growled, moving to swing a fist at his face.

  • MATES: REMNANTS OF A BETRAYED BOND    CHAPTER 317 - BULLYRAGGING

VALEN’S POVDelicate, warm fingers wrap around mine, drawing my attention back to Raina. The pained expression on her face gutted me."Go," Raina whispered, tilting her head up to offer a tired smile. "It's important."I took her hand in mine and brought her fingers to my lips. "Baby, you're important too.”She shook her head while guilt and sadness floated back through the bond. "No, Valen, this is different."Another sense of dread filled me, seeing her so sombre. I felt like a spider behind the eight-ball, knowing that something very bad of epic proportions was on the horizon.“This place feels full of ghosts.” Her distressed blues connected with mine, and she took a deep, panicking breath before whispering, "Hidden energies are everywhere.”“What news do you have that couldn't have waited, Devin?” I gritted my teeth once we left Raina’s hospital room and stood in the corridor, letting my exasperation show.Thankfully, overall, she's back to normal, and Azara and Venus dropped by i

  • MATES: REMNANTS OF A BETRAYED BOND    CHAPTER 316 - HYPOTHERMIA

VALEN’S POV"Let's move her to a private room where she can rest while we keep an eye on her," Grandma Jade opted, flashing her azure blue eyes from Mom to me.Raina exhaled shakily and kept her cold fingers locked with mine. Feeling my heart fracturing for her, I objected.“What if Zuzu could warm her faster?” I asked, disliking that all their proposals meant Raina would still be in agony. I wanted immediate solutions. So I suggested, “She's linked to Raina. Her phoenix flames can merge with her blood.”Still not liking the idea of taking her patient from the hospital, Mom cocked up a brow and opposed, “My healing won't work because this is a god’s doing, and you think your eagle will?”“Worth a try,” I respectfully insisted. We were stubborn alike.Arms akimbo, Mom stared at me for a moment, silently questioning my sanity. Her eyes hardened as she deliberated, and when she realized I would not change my mind, she threw her hands up and muttered in a not-so-pleased tone. “Fine. Forge

  • MATES: REMNANTS OF A BETRAYED BOND    CHAPTER 315 - PHOENIX FLAMES

VALEN’S POVLetting the thrumming bond guide my teleportation, I ended up at the entrance of the hospital, where a crowd had gathered.A deep growl from me parted them instantly, and I strode towards my mate in large, urgent steps. The Worgen followed my shimmer but was mindful of keeping some distance from me.“Babe,” I breathed, noticing her huddled form in my Theta’s arms.“Take her to your Mom. She needs to be checked,” Jason advised frantically, allowing me to take her into my arms.My chest ached with more than broken ribs at the sight of her tear-stained figure curled in my arms, feeling her skin cold as ice against mine. Her lips, chapped and rimmed with a frostbitten white, trembled. Slight frost coated her arms and legs. We’re still in summer, and the sun was as hot as a ball of embers, yet Raina was as cold as a frozen lamb.Another storm to be weathered, and everything felt like it was balancing on the edge of a knife. Not needing to be told twice, I headed for the entranc

  • MATES: REMNANTS OF A BETRAYED BOND    CHAPTER 314 - DIPLOMATIC PACT

VALEN’S POVI'll give him a weakness, alright.“You claim to be a protector, my mate’s guardian. Yet you defy me and twist truths. If you won’t stand with the king of this realm, then tell me, Worgen, whose cause do you truly serve?” I accused, “You seem to guard only your own ambitions.”Gustav just grinned and launched his attack. All his might went into this one as he dug his claws deep into my shoulder.I snarled, bearing the blow to get Gustav where I needed him to be to turn the tide and end this in my favor.Gustav's eyes went wide as he caught my move too late. Using his own momentum against him, I flipped him and then slammed his injured side first into the ground. His snarl was cut off as the air was driven from him, leaving him gasping.“Oh wow!” Theo gyrated. “Eliminated with that reverse chokeslam.”Not wasting a moment, I smashed my knee into his injured ribs. Dropping for the pin as I wrapped a clawed fist around his throat, readying for my final strike."It's over!" I

VALEN’S POVLaunching at me with the might of ten linebackers, each blow Gustav landed drove me back, hit after hit.Even though my blocks were solid, his unrelenting pace did not allow me to return a blow.My heart dropped as my foot glided on gravelly ground, and I lost my footing. The crowd drew in a collective sharp breath. Dread clouded their faces.“How are we losing to this bandwagon jumper?” Zeus gnarled.Gustav seized the opportunity. With speed comparable to my own, he slammed me back, ensuring I crashed to the ground. Then he dropped on me to pin me, panting out, “Are your warriors backup for when you lose? Will they finish the fight for their overrated Alpha? I must be A-ranking for you to need them.”Instinct kicked in, and I got my foot raised in time to slam my heel into Gustav’s gut, sending him stumbling back with a feral snarl. “Argrrr. No way to treat a noble guest.”“You weren't invited,” I spat, gnashing my canines. In a flash, I was back on my feet. Anger fueled
