The Wolf Within

Red eyes gleamed between the trees, dozens of them watching, waiting, hunting, and the forest had become unnaturally silent, even the wind seemed afraid to move as every wolf in the clearing stood frozen.

The Shadow Pack had arrived, my grip tightened around the silver blade, and across from me Alpha Kael’s entire body had gone rigid, the easy confidence I’d seen moments earlier gone, replaced by something far more dangerous, a predator preparing for war. "Get her out of here," one warrior growled, but another immediately shook his head, "They'll track her scent," and a third snapped, "Then we fight." A low rumble of agreement spread through the gathered wolves while the red eyes kept multiplying, one pair, five pairs, ten, and the darkness itself seemed alive.

I swallowed hard because for years I had hunted monsters, and now the monsters were hunting me. The irony wasn’t lost on me as Kael slowly drew the black blade from his back, the weapon humming with strange energy, ancient symbols glowing faintly along its edge. The moment the blade cleared its sheath the forest reacted, the red eyes retreating slightly, not from fear but recognition, and whatever that sword was, the Shadow Pack knew it.

Kael stepped forward, positioning himself between me and the approaching threat, and I hated how the gesture affected me because the bond stirred instantly, warmth spreading through my chest, protective, possessive, wrong, and I pushed the feeling away, I didn’t need his protection, didn’t want it, yet some traitorous part of me noticed every detail: the width of his shoulders, the steady confidence in his stance, the way every wolf around him looked to him for direction, and my wolf, whatever it was, noticed too.

The realization irritated me, then a branch snapped, then another, and the shadows moved because suddenly they weren’t alone. Figures emerged from the darkness, massive wolves, larger than any I’d ever seen, fur black as midnight, eyes glowing crimson, scars covering their bodies like trophies, and there were at least twenty, maybe more.

At their center stood a man, tall, thin, terrifying, silver hair falling to his shoulders, his pale face almost skeletal beneath the moonlight, his smile like a knife, cold, sharp, deadly.

The wolves around me tensed immediately and fear rolled through the clearing as the newcomer’s smile widened, "Alpha Kael," his voice smooth, mocking, "It has been a long time," and Kael’s expression hardened, "Not long enough, Darius." Darius laughed softly, his gaze shifting toward me, and the moment his eyes landed on me something changed, excitement, obsession, recognition, and my blood turned cold. "There she is," and every instinct screamed run, now. Darius took a single step forward, crimson eyes never leaving mine, "The Moon's Daughter," and the title hit like a physical blow, the prophecy, the vision, the woman beneath the blood red moon, it was all real and somehow, impossibly, connected to me.

Kael moved slightly, blocking more of Darius’s view, but the Shadow Alpha just laughed, "Still trying to protect her?" and a growl rumbled from Kael’s chest, "Leave." Darius looked amused, "You know I can't do that," his smile vanishing as he said, "The prophecy has begun," and the clearing grew colder, "The girl belongs to destiny," his eyes darkening, "And destiny belongs to us." "No," Kael said, the word carrying enough force to shake the air, and for a brief moment absolute silence followed before chaos erupted as Darius raised one hand and the Shadow Pack charged.

The forest exploded into violent growls, snarls, screams, bodies colliding with bone shattering force, wolves lunging through darkness, claws flashing beneath moonlight, the clearing becoming a battlefield.

I barely had time to react before a black wolf launched toward me, jaws open, and instinct moved my silver blade, slashing across its shoulder as the beast yelped but didn’t stop. A second wolf appeared, then a third, too many, far too many, and panic surged as I backed away, the bond screaming "Danger," my heart pounding violently while something strange began happening again, that same heat and pressure and power deep beneath my skin awakening. A wolf lunged, I raised my knife too slow, its claws reaching me, then suddenly a massive gray wolf slammed into it and the beast flew sideways.

"Kael" even in wolf form he was enormous, larger than every other wolf, fur shimmering silver gray beneath moonlight, golden eyes locking onto mine, and for one brief second our gazes met, the bond exploding with force that nearly dropped me to my knees. The gray wolf growled, not at me but at everything threatening me, "Mine," and the feeling wasn’t human, wasn’t even his, it came from something older, the bond itself.

Kael turned away immediately, launching back into the fight as though pretending he hadn’t felt it too, and I should’ve been relieved but frustration burned inside me instead as the battle raged and the pressure in my chest kept growing, hotter, impossible to ignore. I fell to one knee, pain ripping through my body, every muscle tightening, vision blurring, and a scream tore from my throat. The fighting stopped, not completely, just enough for everyone to look, as the ground beneath me began glowing, silver light spreading across the snow, the crescent moon necklace burning brighter than the moon itself.

The warriors backed away, fear filling their faces, but Darius smiled like this was exactly what he’d been waiting for, "The awakening," his voice trembling with excitement as silver light erupted around me and the pain became unbearable.

Images flooded my mind, ancient wolves, forgotten kingdoms, a silver throne hidden beneath mountains, a woman wearing a crown of moonlight, and beside her a gray wolf with golden eyes, Kael, no, not Kael, someone before him, an ancestor, a king, and the vision shifted, showing war, betrayal, blood, then a voice echoing through darkness: "The daughter of the moon shall rise, the bond shall unite what hatred divided, the chosen Alpha shall stand beside her, together they shall save the realm or destroy it."

The vision shattered, silver light exploding outward in a shockwave that threw every wolf backward, including me, and I hit the snow hard as the glow vanished and the world went silent.

No one moved, no one spoke, even Darius looked stunned, and slowly I pushed myself upright because something had changed, I could feel it, as the world seemed sharper, brighter, every scent reaching me, every heartbeat, every movement, and I could hear wolves breathing from fifty feet away. My eyes widened, no, impossible, yet deep inside another heartbeat answered mine, steady, powerful, awake, and a voice echoed inside my mind, feminine, ancient, wild: "Hello, little human."

My breath caught because the wolf, my wolf, after eighteen years of silence, she had finally awakened.

  • MINE BEFORE THE BLOOD MOON    The Bond That Lasts

Winter did not end the day Liora's war ended. The snow stayed. The clouds came back. The forges went cold again. But Moonhold changed how it lived inside winter. The first thing they did was not a feast, though there was food enough for one. The first thing they did was bury the bone crown.Liora did it herself. She took the crown made of bone that she had worn from the City, the one that had fallen in the snow, and she carried it to the old garden behind the sanctuary where Lyra had once planted moonflowers that only bloomed at night. She dug a shallow hole with her bare hands, her cracked marks still healing, and placed it in. Diana helped her cover it. No words were said over it. It was not a relic, it was not cursed. It was just a thing that had been used to try to make fear look like power. They let the snow cover it.The three hundred who had been marked did not leave right away. Some did, the next morning, walking south to find their families with clean foreheads and clear eyes

  • MINE BEFORE THE BLOOD MOON    Unmarking

Liora stayed on her knees long after the silver light was gone. The bone crown lay in the snow beside her, useless. The twisted marks on her neck and hands that had been moving for weeks were now still, cracked like dried river mud. Her eyes were no longer solid silver. They were white and bloodshot, human, full of tears that would not stop. She did not look like a queen who had marched with three hundred. She looked like a woman who had run too far and gotten lost.Outside the inner gate, her three hundred marked soldiers still stood on the road. They had not moved since she entered. Their own twisted marks glowed faintly, silver-grey, pulsing in a slow, sick rhythm. When Liora had been strong, they had been still because she commanded them to be still. Now that she was broken, they were still because they did not know what else to do. Some swayed. One sat down in the snow and stared at his hands.Inside the courtyard, no one moved either. Kael held his people. Thea held the memory.

  • MINE BEFORE THE BLOOD MOON    The Day The War Came

The war came at dawn, but not the way Moonhold expected a war to come. There was no battle horn from Moonhold. No war cry. The sky was still grey, low and flat, as if the sun had forgotten how to rise. The snow on the northern road was untouched except for one thing, a wide track, hundreds of feet moving as one.Liora and her three hundred arrived exactly when Varric said they would. The drums stopped at the edge of the valley. The army stopped with them. For a full minute, nothing happened. Liora sat on her horse, staring at Moonhold. The outer gates were open. The outer walls were empty. No archers. No wolves. No guards shouting challenge. Only smoke from the low beacons and the faint silver glow still leaking from the temple roof where Rowan slept. It confused her. She had prepared a speech about conquerors and bloodlines. She had prepared for arrows."What is this?" her captain asked, hand on his twisted mark, his eyes silver and unfocused. "A trap?"Liora's own mark crawled. "No.

  • MINE BEFORE THE BLOOD MOON    Eve of the War

The eve of the war came with no sunset. The sky never cleared. Low clouds hung over Moonhold like a wet blanket, grey and heavy, pressing down on the roofs and the walls. There was no wind. The beacons that had been lit the night before burned low, their smoke going straight up into the grey, like pillars holding the sky up. It felt like the whole world was holding its breath and waiting for dawn.Rowan's power was still at its peak. For a full day and night he had not touched the ground. He floated in the center of the temple sanctuary, where they had moved him because the nursery walls had started to crack from his light. The circle with two lines, Lyra's mark, the mark Astra had spoken of, spun around him slowly, constantly, as big as a cart wheel, made of pure silver light. Every time it turned, it sent out a warm pulse that made every marked person in Moonhold feel their own mark tingle, like a bell being rung somewhere far away in their chest.Diana had not left his side. She sa

  • MINE BEFORE THE BLOOD MOON    Two Days Before The War

Two days before the war, Moonhold did not sleep. The forges burned all night. The low forges in the stone yard had been cold for three winters, but now they were white-hot, the bellows never stopping, because the gates had to be reinforced with old iron. The blacksmiths, two old men and their granddaughters, hammered plates that had been in storage since Kael's grandfather was Alpha. They hammered without singing, which was strange, because Moonhold blacksmiths always sang. The wolves patrolled in shifts. Not the lazy circling they did in peace, but tight, silent lines, nose to tail, ears forward, always facing north. Kael's old patrol, the one that had found Varric bleeding in the woods, did not stop at all. Mothers moved children into the inner stone halls, the deep rooms under the sanctuary that had been carved when Moonhold was first built to hide from wild winters, not war. Warriors sharpened blades that had not been drawn in years, some that had rust on them from hanging over fi

  • MINE BEFORE THE BLOOD MOON    The War Liora Wanted

Liora stood over the war table, Moonhold carved in stone in the center, little black flags around it, Rowan's name written beside it in her own hand. "They will not give him willingly," she said, "so we will take him."Varric was behind her, he hadn't slept. "You're talking about war against your own allies, against Thea, against Kael, for what, for a child?"Liora didn't turn. "He is my son, my blood, Lyra's blood. Moonhold has him because Diana hid him, because Thea awakened him. He belongs with me, he belongs in the City of Unchosen Names where his power can be shaped properly."Varric stepped closer. "Rowan chose to stay, you saw it. He chose Moonhold, he chose Thea, the Seventh chose him right there in that courtyard. If you march on Moonhold you march against everything Lyra gave away, you become the Guardians."Liora finally looked at him, her eyes were silver now, not gold, just silver, cold silver. "You were always weak Varric, you guided when you should have commanded. Lyra
