The doctor and three nurses rushed into Jayden's room. Andrea jumped to her feet in panic, her hands trembling, while I stayed rooted to my chair, clutching Jayden’s hand so tight as though my grip could keep him alive.

“Please… don’t die,” I whispered under my breath, my heart pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. My eyes burned as tears clouded my vision, but I refused to let go of him.

The sound of the machines, the quick instructions from the doctor, the way the nurses moved around...everything blurred around me. My whole world was narrowed down to Jayden’s pale face and the silent prayer escaping my lips.

The doctor finally stepped back, peeled off his gloves, and looked at Andrea.

“Yes doctor, tell me,” Andrea asked with a shaky voice. “What happened to my brother?”

“He’s okay,” the doctor said calmly. “It’s really a miracle.”

“Miracle?” I whispered, my voice breaking.

“Yes. Your brother is out of danger now. He should be waking up soon.”

It’s been two days since I last saw Jayden. The silence around me these past two days has been heavy, like a stone pressing on my chest. I couldn’t focus at work. I kept staring at my computer screen, pretending to type while my thoughts wandered back to him lying unconscious. The sound of his laugh, the way he used to look at me, even when I hated him — it all came back in flashes I couldn’t fight off.Tricia noticed, of course. She always did.“Stop beating yourself up,” she scolded as she leaned on my desk during lunch break. “That man hurt you countless times. He doesn’t deserve your tears.”Her voice was sharp but her eyes were soft. She sighed and added, “Maybe karma came early for him.”I forced a smile, pretending her words were comfort. Comforting indeed. But my heart still ached.By the time the day ended, I was drained. Donald offered me a ride home, and I accepted. The car ride was quiet, at least for me. Donald spoke here and there, but his words never settled in my ears.

“I’m waiting, Tricia,” I said firmly, folding my hands tight against my chest. My heart thumped harder with every passing second. “What feelings are you talking about?”Tricia froze, her lips trembling. She tried to laugh it off, a nervous chuckle breaking the silence. “Actually… let’s forget what I said,” she tittered, waving her hand in the air like it was nothing. “I think I was talking rubbish. I’m just exhausted and you know me...I tend to say shit whenever I’m exhausted. And that dude really stressed me out.” She forced another laugh that sounded fake even to her own ears, then quickly turned away from me and moved to Jayden’s bedside. She adjusted his blanket like she suddenly remembered he needed attention. “We should focus on Jayden right now.”“Tricia…” I stepped closer, my voice softer now but heavy with suspicion. “You can tell me anything. You need not hide anything from me. What are best friends for?”She froze again, her back to me. Her hands lingered on Jayden’s blanke

Donald stared at me, his eyes wide open and his jaw dropped, while he held his cheek. The red mark of my slap burned against his skin, but it was nothing compared to the sting I felt inside my chest."Go on! Go jump into the road. What's stopping you from doing so?" My voice shook, high and shrill, the anger and pain spilling out of me like fire. His lips parted in disbelief. "Monalisa?" he whispered, his voice raw, like I had stabbed him straight in the heart."Do it!" I yelled, my hands trembling, my whole body shaking. "Since you want me dead… go ahead and die!! How could you say such a thing, Donald!! How could you!" My tears blurred his face as I screamed, and all I saw was the shadow of my best friend breaking before me."Monalisa… I’m...""Enough!" I cut him off, lifting my hand as if the sound of his voice was a knife to my skin. "Not another word!"My chest heaved. I bent forward, trying to breathe, but the weight on my chest was crushing me. My vision spun. The tears wouldn’

We arrived at the hospital, and before the car could even come to a complete stop, I threw the door open and jumped out. My legs carried me faster than my mind could process. My chest burned, but I didn’t care. My only thought was Jayden.I pushed through the hallways, bumping into people without saying a word. When I reached the surgery room, my heart sank. The room was empty. Cold. Silent.“No… no, where is he?” my voice trembled as I whispered to myself.I spun around and rushed back to the reception desk, my palms sweaty, my knees almost giving out.“Please,” I panted, leaning on the counter. “Jayden… the patient that was brought in after the accident. Where is he?”The nurse, calm as ever, looked at the chart and then back at me. “He’s been moved to a private ward.”I didn’t even let her finish before I whispered a shaky “Thank you” and bolted toward the hallway she pointed.Behind me, Donald and Tricia finally caught up, their footsteps echoing in the corridor. My heart was raci

The siren wailed as the ambulance raced through the city. I sat inside, clutching Jayden’s hand so tightly it felt like if I let go, I’d lose him forever. Tears rolled down my cheeks, blinding me. His face was pale, his lips bruised, his chest rising and falling in shallow breaths.“God, please don’t take him from me,” I whispered through sobs. “Please let him live… please…”The paramedics shouted things I couldn’t understand. It was all noise. The only thing clear was the weight of Jayden’s hand in mine, the faint warmth reminding me he was still here, still fighting. When the ambulance screeched to a halt at the hospital, chaos followed. The back doors flew open and a stretcher was pulled in.“Careful! One, two, three!” The paramedics lifted Jayden onto the stretcher.“No… no…” My heart screamed as his hand slipped away from mine. The emptiness was instant. I stood frozen, my feet glued to the floor, watching them wheel him away. It felt like watching my soul being dragged down a da
