Zaria’s POV
I looked at the building with its old bricks and ivy-covered front; the purple flag read "Moonveil Academy." The man in a suit gestured for me to enter. While I approached, I could hear the remote hum of voices sounding from inside, along with the faint ring of a bell in the halls beyond. The large doors seemed to be made of heavy wood, cool to the touch, and carved with dragon heads, wolves, and serpents. I experienced a weird jolt inside of me. Nerves.
The man in a suit, who hasn't told me his name yet, kept going, and I followed him. The students wore purple and black uniforms with the school's emblem. They stared at me, and silence followed.
A human girl? Someone whispered. And I thought, what's that supposed to mean? We stopped at a door with painted glass in the middle, depicting the universe.
Go on, he said, the dean is waiting for you. The man in a suit turned, and I walked inside. He was in his late forties, maybe, his black hair short, his suit crisp.
Ms. Ravenshade, welcome to the academy. I’m the dean; you can call me Mr. Stormcrest. Your academics are off the charts, but this academy is more than that. You possess a talent we do not often see, and I believe you may have gifts yet to be discovered. I expect you to help bridge the world here, Zaria. I advise you to watch and learn from others, and pair with someone who will guide you around.
Thank you, sir. I am very excited to attend your Academy. There was a knock on the door, a woman my age, with short white hair and a nice smile.
Dean Stormcrest, have you called for me?
Nova, this is Zaria, a new student…
A human? she asked, confused.
Yes, we are all children of the universe; we have to coexist with humans. Now, show her around and learn from each other.
Nova turned to me and put her hand out. Nice to meet you. Allow me to show you around, then to the dorms.
Why did he keep saying “human”? I asked as we walked the hallways. The walls were painted with bright colors, battles, but what made me stop was the shape of the fighters. Figures from a fantasy book. Dragons, wolves, fairies, and shifters. And in the middle of the battle, a warrior dressed in black, her sword obsidian. She stood solitary while creatures from every side closed in around her, their faces grimaced with anger and sorrow. Lightning lit up behind her, and bodies lay at her feet, both friend and foe. Her eyes in the painting were fierce, almost defiant. Something about her appeared important, as if the entire war turned on her next move.
That’s the battle of Terra of demons, Alexandra, the queen of demons, died, Nova said sadly. The factions betrayed the alliance, and she was surrounded.
Why are you whispering, I said this is not a real thing"
She laughed. Humans, of course, are real, and you’re the only human in the Academy.
What? I don’t understand…
I’m a shifter. See the two women there? That’s Astrid, the most powerful witch in the academy, and she’s popular, has wild red hair, always wears a collection of silver rings on her fingers, and people say she can charm anyone. Her followers, Valira and Cordelia, are both she-wolves and come from a royal lineage. Valira is tall with sharp blue eyes, often wearing her hair in a long braid, while Cordelia has jet-black hair and quiet confidence. The three of them are always together.
Okay, I read many fantasy books, and it's nice that you guys pick nicknames for yourselves.
Oh, I see, then watch this…and she shifted into a white fox. I was so startled that I hit the wall behind me.
This can’t be real…I whispered.
Nova shifted back. It is, and you’ll get used to it. Don’t worry, no one will ever hurt you. We do not want to start a war with humans. Too many of our kind died as humans hunted us. We have had peace ever since the Realms Accord was signed, but people still remember what happened years ago. Some say the wounds never healed, and the treaty is only as strong as our trust.
My hands were shaking, and she took them into hers. Look at me, please trust me, you’ll love it here.
I let out a nervous laugh. Okay, tell me more, I said as I looked around.
The three men walking towards us were the popular ones in the academy. Valerian, a dragon, had gleaming silver-blonde hair and eyes like glowing gold, with an effortless confidence that made students part as he passed. Nyxian, the wolf, was tall and broad-shouldered, his messy dark hair falling over his piercing grey eyes, and he walked quietly. Noctis, the vampire, was pale as moonlight, with defined features and an impassive expression, dressed immaculately in crisp black, his presence sending a chill through the hallway.
As they passed us, I held my breath; their eyes were focused on me.
A human, they chuckled. Start your bets, Nyxian said, “I give her a week.
Don’t listen to them, now, let’s get your uniform, and then go to the dorm. The man at the counter looked old and sad. He lifted his eyes and looked at me finally. You? He spoke quietly.
Yes, I’m new here, yes, human. May I have my uniform, please?
He stood there as his eyes focused on me.
What kind of faction are you? I asked kindly
Forgotten souls kingdom, demon, he spoke quietly. He lifted the package and handed it to me. His bony hands touched mine, and I perceived whispers. I turned. Nova was by the door…Welcome to the Academy he said, smiling now.
Wow, I need to get used to the factions and their moods. Nova was chatting, but I was observing as we passed more students.
I turned the corner, not paying attention. The wall I walked into was actually a man.
Sorry, sir, I said, taking a step back. He was tall and built, with a stern face.
Human, watch your step, he said, getting closer. His brows furrowed as his dark eyes looked at me, and a strand of his long black hair fell on his face. Nova pulled me away.
Sorry, Master Malacar, she is new here. We walked away, and I turned to look back. His eyes were focused on me still.
Who was that?
Master Malacar is a beast, very powerful, and also our training teacher, physical training that is. And here we are, the dorm. She opened the door to a simple room. Two beds, purple blankets with the school's emblem, black sheets. Two desks and shelves on the wall with various books.
I sat on the bed, still attempting to wrap my head around all I experienced so far. Honestly, I thought this was still a fantasy, and I would wake up at any moment.
Malacar’s POVThe king left in a hurry, and I wondered what had happened. Zaria was staring into the fireplace, her thoughts probably far away. She was still mad at us, and I realized I needed to give her space. After a while, she walked to the bedroom and locked the door. Rune and I chuckled.Malacar, she needs more training. The fact that she called her mother’s army tells me Alexandra transferred her powers into her.I didn’t think about that, so what you’re saying is she is holding double what she should? I cursed.Look, she is strong; she needs more control. The anger…That’s her demon blood Rune; we carry that anger inside of us. It took me years to control mine; I will not expect her to master it overnight. I stood up and threw him a blanket. Go to the guest bedroom; I will take the couch.I couldn’t sleep; I needed her scent, and it drove me mad not having her in my arms. Rain hammered against the large windows. The sky lit up, and the thunder rattled the house. I heard the be
Zaria’s POVI held my breath as the figure finally got closer. King Abrax. I let out a happy yelp and ran to him.His hands reached for me, and I slammed my body onto his. Well, someone missed me, he chuckled.I pulled away, embarrassed, remembering he is the king after all. Sorry, sir. I didn’t mean to be disrespectful. His hand lifted my chin, and I looked up at him. It was a perfect welcome, he said, smiling. I want to spend a couple of hours with you all to oversee your training.Really? We haven’t started yet. I clapped my hands. Sia came to my side, her smoky head bowed to the king. Get inside, I commanded her.Malacar and the king exchanged looks.Okay, then let’s start, Malacar said. Close your eyes and let your body work the magic. What do you feel?I don’t know; it seems like I can only do it when I’m in danger, I said, disappointed.Danger? King Abrax chuckled and let his demon out. It was huge, angry, and ready to kill.Sir? I said, backing up, "I will not hurt a demon…"My
Zaria’s POVI sat up in bed, holding my chest; one of my mates was in pain. Deep pain. None of them were in bed, and I put on Rune’s shirt and ran down the stairs. I saw the blood and started to panic.I walked outside to see Malacar, supporting Rune, his wings open. His face was pale." Zaria, get my phone fast," he shouted. I ran back to the bedroom and grabbed his phone. Malacar, what is happening?Rune’s wings had droplets of crimson blood on the feathers. He never healed and didn’t say anything…Get the doctor here. Use the helicopter. Now.My hands were shaking as I touched his face. His eyes opened. Why didn’t you tell me? Us…I didn’t think it was that bad. I wanted to take flight, and the wounds opened again. Zaria…Shhhhh, okay, the doctor is in the way. He passed out, and I let out a short scream.Malacar turned to me. Zaria, I hear the helicopter; everything will be fine. Why did I not believe this time? The doctor walked inside and immediately knew he was a demon. Like a
Malacar's POVWhat the hell are you doing here, touching my mate? I said, slamming her into the wall.Malacar, I love... wait, your mate?Go back and never show yourself before me again. Zor came out, his claws around her neck. Am I making myself clear?Yes, your butler said I have to leave the house….Exactly, I already compensated you. Get the fuck out of my face. Wait…what are you doing in the human realm? And how did you know Zaria? She was trembling as Zor grabbed her again. I got a note at the market; someone wants your mate killed.I slapped her hard. You stupid bitch, I should kill you right now…leave.Composing myself, I walked out of the bathroom to see Zaria and Rune at the table sipping on colorful drinks.Zaria, I dealt with the problem.Interesting, she said that you’re the love of her life…I think I paled. They both burst into laughter. How many of these drinks did you have? I looked at Rune. It's the first. Calm down; she handled herself. Rune turned to the server, ord
Zaria’s POVI stayed in bed thinking about the last few days. Trials are over, and in two weeks everyone gets to go home.Home. I don’t have a home. The door opened, and Rune walked inside. He had something in his hand. This is for you, he said, handing me a glowing yellow flower. The scent was like a rose and dew.Rune, this is beautiful. Where did you get it?It doesn’t matter, he said. I got it for you to cheer you up. His hand touched my face softly. I know you’re questioning everything, but how about, right now, concentrating on controlling your powers and having some fun meanwhile?Malacar walked inside smiling. How is my beautiful mate feeling today?I looked between them. Okay, spill it out. What are you two hiding?Rune let out a breath. Tell her, Malacar; we shouldn’t hide things from her.The king sent his healer while you were asleep. He paused. You are too weak, and your power is too great. That’s why you faint every time you use it. Now we have two weeks to get you in sh
Abrax’s POVZaria was an amazing student, strong like her mother. I think maybe stronger than her. I sat in my chair looking around the table at the faces that once betrayed me. Did I seek vengeance? No, I wanted the truth, and eventually, it will all surface. I have a feeling that will be soon.Cardona sat down. Let’s begin, he said. Yesterday, a student tried to assassinate another student. I think she should be expelled.I laughed loudly. Have you watched the trials, Cardona? No, I have not; I’ve been busy…Then how do you already expel her when she merely defended herself? I was there and watched the whole thing unravel. Please tell me, King Balvar, you’re there, Valkrie? Turning to themKing Abrax is right. The man from your faction attempted to kill Zaria.Ridiculous, Cardona said. What are his reasons?Let’s bring him inside, shouldn’t we? I demanded. The doors opened, and the warlock walked inside. State your name, someone asked.Waz Xavier. Now explain yourself. Why did you u
