Amber's POV

While Chloe and my stepfather were looking at me, I was staring at my mother in return, waiting for her response—hoping she'd support me and look at me with the same softness she had looked at Chloe with earlier.

"Oh my sweet Amber," she called, her face lighting up in relief. "I know this is too much to ask, but you are our only savior right now." She got up and walked closer to me, then reached for my hands, which were folded across my chest. "Please, marry Vincent."

"I... I should marry Vincent?" My mother nodded quickly. "But she just said he is an abuser. Why should I be the one to marry him and not her? I can understand if he..." I snatched my hands from hers and pointed at my stepfather. "...were the one asking me to marry Vincent. But you, aren't we both your daughters? Why are you protecting her alone?"

Tears brimmed in my mother's eyes as she shook her head, flashing pitiful glances at Chloe, who was trying her best to look as vulnerable as ever. "You have to understand where I'm coming from, Amber. Your sister has always been weak since childhood. She can never survive Vincent's harsh treatment once they get married." Her tears were flowing at this moment.

A disbelieving scoff left my lips. "She has always been weak and can't survive Vincent's harsh treatment, so you think I'm the strongest between us? I can go through anything, right?"

"No, that's not what Mom meant," Chloe chipped in. She jumped out of her bed and came in front of me. "I can't..."

I tuned out whatever she was saying. My mouth parted in astonishment, and my eyes stayed fixed on her acclaimed injured leg, which was standing firmly on the hard tiled floor.

"...please," she stopped talking when she noticed I was staring at her leg. She quickly turned away and began limping back to her bed. I looked at my mother to check if she noticed Chloe's act, but she didn't. She was crying her eyes out—or maybe she saw it but pretended like she didn't.

"You are my only hope, Amber," Chloe said.

"I'm not your only hope!" I screamed, which was a big mistake because a resounding slap landed on my face.

I held my face and looked up, only to come face-to-face with my stepfather. His eyes darkened as he narrowed them and clenched his jaw tightly.

"Do you think you still have a choice?" he asked. He shook his head as he turned away from me and walked towards his daughter. "Whether you approve or not, you must marry Vincent. I cannot afford to call off the wedding." His words were final. He had spoken, and there was no room for argument, but I still wanted to try.

"Mom..." My mother shook her head as she leaned closer to my ear.

"Just do this for us," she said, referring to herself and me. "You remember how we were suffering after your father left with his mistress. It was Richard who came to marry me and rescued us from poverty. Now his business is in trouble and can fold up at any moment, so he really needs this marriage to form a relationship with the Liams."

"But I..." My mother dropped to her knees before I could complete my words. "Mom, what are you doing?" I tried to pull her up, but she wouldn't budge.

"We can't afford to be thrown into the streets, Amber." She took a quick glance at Chloe. "Besides, I can't leave Chloe behind, and if your father decides to throw us out, he won't let me take her with me," she cried.

I wanted to scream that he is not my father. I wanted to walk away from all this manipulation, but what would happen to my mother if I did? Seeing my mother helplessly on her knees brought tears to my eyes. At this moment, I'd be no less than a villain to her if I said no.

Throwing my head back, I took a deep breath to swallow my pain and let out a defeated, "Fine, I will marry him."

My mother's face lit up immediately. She got up and pulled me into a hug, patting my back in appreciation. Meanwhile, I locked gazes with Chloe, and she was smirking victoriously.

And that's how I became Mrs. Liam—through my half-sister's manipulation. I wonder what lies she told Vincent that made him hate me to the core.

A tired yawn escaped my lips, which reminded me that it was late at night and I needed to sleep. I picked myself up and climbed the stairs tiredly. On getting to our room, I tried to push the door open, but it seemed to be locked from the inside.

"Vincent?" I called, knocking on the door gently.

"I don't want to see you tonight," he replied from inside. He sounded sleepy, which meant he would not open the door anymore tonight... well, I guess it's me and one of the guest rooms tonight.

I released a tired sigh and headed towards one of the guest rooms. When I was near one of the rooms, I suddenly felt something rush up my throat. I pushed the door open without wasting time and rushed to the toilet. On getting there, I began throwing up. After throwing up for a while, I became too weak to walk, so I simply sat on the floor and leaned against the wall as I tried to recall what I ate that must have upset my stomach.

While I was still thinking, my phone beeped, and it was a text from Annabelle, my best friend.

"Hey, pumpkin, Ethan is coming back tomorrow. Care to join me to pick him up?" the text read.

My lips curved into a smile. Ethan was finally back. My breath of fresh air.

"Sure," I replied to her.

Amber's POVI was laughing hard while reading the clauses, then I got to the last clause and I didn't know if I should continue laughing or begin crying.“Clause 23: Since a child wasn't involved in the marriage, Amber Sinclair will have absolutely no right to any of Vincent Liam's properties.”My head tilted slightly as I focused on that part. I wasn't intending to demand anything from Vincent after the divorce, but stating it here under the guise of no child being involved in the marriage was so unfair to me. I mean, what about my time wasted during the marriage? I wasn't even allowed to work and save money for myself, so they were basically sending me into the streets penniless.“Are you going to sign that?” Ms. Miller asked.I shook my head with a serious expression.“Not yet, but this just reminds me of something very important.”“What is that?”“I should start working as soon as possible.” She wanted to say something, but I continued to explain my point to her. “If I don't start

Amber's POVFirst, there was silence. It was as if their brains were processing the words that came out of my mouth. Then came the explosion.“What?!” My mother and stepfather exclaimed, their faces contorted in shock.Chloe's face fell instantly. She stared at me with her mouth hanging open wordlessly. She suddenly sprang up and lunged at me, holding me by the neck of my blouse.“What did you just say?” Her eyes reddened and her breath became uneven.“I said, I am pregnant,” I pushed her hand away. “With Vincent's child.”She shook her head in denial.“No, no, no. This can't be happening right now.” The panic in her voice was obvious. My stepfather stepped forward and gave me a slap I didn't see coming, and for the first time in twenty-five years, my mother rushed in front of me with her arms spread out protectively.“Easy, Richard, she's with child,” she said.If my cheek wasn't stinging from the slap, her action would have fluttered my heart. I held my stinging cheek and glared at

Amber's POV“...you know I can't drink alcohol recently, I'm with child,” I whined, rubbing my flat belly softly.I'm in a cab going to my parents' home. My mom called again while I was having breakfast, urging me to come home because there's something important we must talk about.Annabelle scoffed from the other side of the phone.“I'm with child,” she mimicked me in a mocking manner. “I thought you were strongly against keeping the child. Where is that protectiveness coming from now?”I shrugged my shoulders even though she couldn't see me.“I don't care what you think, you're coming with us,” she insisted. “Don't worry, I'll make sure even a drop of alcohol won't get in your mouth.”“I... I don't know,” I hesitated. She released a frustrated groan.“Come on, don't be like those ladies who get restricted by pregnancy and end up abandoning their friends.”My lips curved into a smile as I imagined what her expression would be right now. She'd be pouting her lips and doing that puppy-

Vincent's POVI groaned as a severe headache struck my head. I slowly opened my eyes and sat up, holding my head in my hands. I remained in that position for a while before taking a look at my surroundings and realizing I was in a strange room. I was confused for a second until I recalled what happened last night and how I might have ended up here.Just then, the door creaked open and my buddy, Steve, stuck his head in.“Oh, you're awake,” he stepped inside completely. “Here,” he handed me a glass of honey water, then nodded at my hand still resting on my forehead. “Aftermath of drinking too much. I told you you'd regret it this morning.”I didn't say a word in my defense. I simply gulped down the water and handed him the empty glass.“Thanks.”Steve nodded.“So, are you ready to talk about why you stormed into my bar last night?”His question reminded me of yesterday's incident, and I balled my fists while glaring at the floor with a tightened jaw.“Chloe's been cheating on me.”“Wha

Amber's POV“What does the time say?” Vincent asked, his eyes moving to my belly. “Where did you go that you're returning home dangerously late? Do you realize you're with child?”I raised my brows at his last question, a laugh threatening to escape my lips. I was expecting a confrontation from him after dumping the test results on him, but I didn't expect him to be waiting for me at the door.“Reply to me when I'm talking to you. Where have you been?”I ignored him and pushed past him, but he caught my right arm and pulled me back. “Am I talking to someone or not?”I released a hiss as I snatched my arm from him. “Quit being a hypocrite in front of me. Stop pretending like you care when you clearly don't!” I yelled in his face.“I... I...” he seemed short of words.“You what?” I nodded my head slowly. “I am done having you and everyone else control my life, Vincent. Yes, I am pregnant with your child, but that doesn't give you the right to interfere with my life.” I looked him in the

Amber's POVIt's been seven hours. We've been sightseeing for seven good hours now. It wasn't supposed to turn into a whole-day outing, but after Ethan dropped his luggage at home and picked up his car, we somehow kept driving from one place to another.“I think it's time to eat,” Ethan said. He glanced at my stomach before focusing on the road. I was in the front seat with him.I frowned a bit.“And why are you staring at my belly?” My arms instinctively wrapped around my stomach.“Your stomach's been growling,” he replied.“Oh...” I laughed softly.Annabelle suddenly leaned forward from the backseat and placed her hands on both the headrests of our seats.“I know a fine restaurant, but it's expensive.” She faced Ethan. “Is your pocket capable?” she asked him.Ethan scoffed.“Nothing's too expensive when it involves my girls.”Annabelle fell back into her seat with a victorious grin.“Now, that's the only thing I love about you.”I laughed tiredly. I knew the restaurant she was talki
