CHAPTER 1
It all came crashing down…
Tonight, her boyfriend of eight long years had finally achieved his goal – to have his own company.
With Serena’s guidance, Adrian had landed a deal worth twenty billion in investment, and this party was meant to celebrate it.
But now, while she watched that same man go on his knees to propose to another woman, all that perfection had quickly fallen apart.
Adrian is knelt in the center of the hall, a massive bouquet in one hand and a small velvet box in the other.
People had started to gather, their tones hushed and the whispers circulating quickly.
With her heart in her hand, Serena followed the movement of the crowd, pushing through for a better view. This had to be some sort of a mistake.
They part readily for her, the murmurs growing deeper.
Finally, she reaches the circle, and her eyes take in the dreadful sight.
In front of her was Adrian, on one knee, holding up a shimmering ring to a familiar black haired woman she’d been seeing around lately.
Noting her presence, he looks up at her, a disdainful look in his eyes she'd never seen before. Before she could search them for answers, Adrian turns around without a single word, then continues smiling as he stares at another woman.
“A-Adrian! What are you doing?” She manages to sputter, her voice rising to a half-yell, momentarily shocked.
Adrian looks at her with annoyance, “What does it look like I am doing?”
Without sparing her another word, he refocuses on the other woman with so much sweetness. “Cassandra… my Cassie, these past few weeks I have spent with you have been nothing but sweet, and because of your good-luck in my life, I have become a made man. Will you make me complete forever by being my wife?”
Serena stumbles on her own feet as she walks around to stand in front of the duo, watching speechless as Cassandra nods, holding out her ring finger, and nodding happily.
“You’re proposing to another woman? Adrian? Aren’t you making a mistake here? Who is she? Why—”
Looking angry at being disturbed again, he turns to Serena. “Just who the fuck are you exactly? What the heck do you want from me? That I should propose to you? She’s the one I want to marry, not you, frumpy and all submissive and annoying.”
His harsh response throws her off her mental balance. “Maybe not that you should propose to me, but at least respect the fact that we’ve been dating for eight years? All of these…” Serena waves her pale hands around, “…are all because of me. You did not even break up with me? Heck, I am here because of you. Why would you—”
“Let me stop you right there before you start to take credit for everything I have achieved by my own merit. Look at me now, I have my own company, and in the next edition of the Forbes magazines, I will be featured in it. Do you really think all of these are because of you?” Adrian scoffs, standing to his feet.
“Don’t you think you are out of my league now?” He cocks his head to the side, before hissing audibly, making a show of holding Cassandra’s finger.
Out of his league?
No one claps as the onlookers are unsure of what to do but only watch the scene. Only a few of the people in the crowd actually give her pitiable glances, but they can’t do anything.
“What league?”She retorts, scoffing, “The league of cheaters? The league of men whose egos are bigger than the reality they should accept? If that’s the league in question, then yes, I am out of your league.” Serena manages a response, her eyes moist as she struggles to keep them back so she won’t seem weak.
Adrian only rolls his eyes before turning back to Cassandra, and just as he slips the ring into her finger, Serena turns to leave, the spectators parting to let her walk past. She hears whispering but they won’t change anything.
Even the staff had recognized her as being the one who did most of the work, but he had gone completely blind to that fact, choosing another woman… And that was not even the worst part of it all.
He had deliberately raised her hopes, toyed with her feelings. Serena had suspected tonight was going to be more than a party. Adrian had been secretive these past few days, making calls out of earshot, going out in the early hours of the morning and trying to make sure that every inch of the event was perfectly set.
She had dared to believe he was going to use this opportunity to propose to her; that was probably why he was being so secretive, wasn't it?
Except, someone else was at the core of all the surprises and it wasn't her.
Sniffling and wiping her eyes, trying to not imagine everything that she had been given away, sacrificed for his dream, and when it came to his turn to fulfill her own dream, he pulled a reverse card on her…
She stumbles out of the venue, her eyes very moist and her vision blurry. Suddenly, she bumps into a man, but due to the tears in her eyes, she’s unable to see who it is. “I’m sorry.” She mumbles, side-stepping out of his way.
And now here she is, after spending eight whole years on him, she is walking out of his proposal, tears in her eyes.
Eight whole years, gone.
He’d been cheating, and he chose the woman he’d known for weeks over the one he has known for eight years. All those late night calls, staying up late ‘working’, all of those times he was busy, he had been spending it with another woman, and he did not even have the basic decency to break up with her first.
He used her to become a big man, before discarding her to the side like a piece of wet used rag.
Outside the event venue, she looked up at the sky, willing everything to go back to the way they used to be, the life she had before she even met the jerk, but life does not work like that.
Like they say, if the front is blocked, turn around… and that’s exactly what Serena did.
The air inside the grand hall was thick and heavy, a blend of expensive floral arrangements, heated bodies underneath expensive perfumes, and the stemch of jealousy.Cassandra was standing near a tall table holding an impressive vase, but she wasn't impressed by it. Nor was she intimidated by the surrounding people around her and their extensive display of wealth. No, Cassandra felt cold. The kind of cold that you felt in your bones, the kind that came with not possessing what you thought was yours completely and absolutely. She knew she was supposed to be enjoying this annual charity gala, it was a big event to connect and network, and maybe even show off. But instead of that, she could only focus on the one person whose attention she could never really make only hers, not entirely, not truly.Adrian, her fiance, was currently engaged in a conversation. That would have been fine. I mean Adrian was still a business man, and networking was mandatory. The problem was the person Adria
Evelyn was stood on the top balcony of the ballroom, her arms resting lightly on the gleaming wooden railing. From up there, she could see the entire hall spread out beneath her. The chandeliers glowed warmly, scattering soft, golden light across the dresses, the suits, the jewelry, the polished shoes, and tables covered in crystal glasses. The music filled the air with its melody, weaving through the low laughter and quiet conversations. But Evelyn wasn't focused on any of that… it was really none if her business.Instead her eyes were fixed below, on Serena.Serena was standing near the corner of a table at the ballroom, holding clutch in her arms, waiting patiently for Damien to return to her. Evelyn watched as Adrian walked towards her, stopping just a few inches from her. That piqued her curiosity. What did that animal want? She watched as Adrian shifted right to front of her, talking too close. Evelyn couldn't hear the words, but from where she stood, she could see everyth
The music changed again, shifting from waltz to something softer and slower. It was the kind of song that wrapped around everyone and made the air seem free, and the lights seem gentler. Serena felt free like this, felt all her anger and all her worries dissolve away like this. She wasn't sure if it was the music or the movement, or the man, but something about everything made her chest loosen. Damien hadn't said anything when he lead her away from that incel Adrian, hadn't asked questions, hadn't shown illogical jealousy. Instead he simply stole her away from the rest of the room, a warm smile on his face as he lead her to the dance floor. "You look beautiful..." He said for what would be the fourth or fifth time since he'd picked her up.She bit her lip, trying to hide her smile, but she failed miserably, unable to contain herself. "You don't look so bad yourself Mr Blackwell." She teased. He leaned in a little, lowering his voice. "I'll pretend you just called me the most hands
Adrian was still rigid, chest tightening until it felt like he might snap. The room felt different now, like the air was too thin and time seemed to move painfully slower. Every head was still in awe as Serena walked in, with Damien next to her. They had stolen the spotlight, hogging all the attention for themselves. He couldn't breathe clearly, he couldn't move.He didn't know they would be coming here. I mean, he'd known Damien would come but he didn't know that Damien would be her bringing with him. For a moment, he thought he must be imagining things. After all, while the engagement had been announced, he'd expected it to just be some kind of PR stunt, a ploy Damien had come up with to make him look stupid. It has been weeks since he ended their relationship, weeks since he shut her down, weeks since she returned to her family. Weeks since she had stopped being someone he thought about. But ever since the announcement, he couldn't lie he hadn't thought about her. He thought o
Adrian walked into the grand hall, past the tall oak doors that led into the inside of of the ballroom. The perfumed air and glassy, golden chandelier lights hit him with its warm and inviting glow. But somehow the lights didn't seem welcoming, it irritated his eyes and the knot in his stomach tightened. He was already regretting coming here. He didn't know why he let Cassandra change his mind. He had told her he would think about it but she kept peppering him every three minutes about it, he eventually gave in.A small part of him knew he was always going to come, but he would rather shoot himself in the head than admit that, especially now that he knew he actually regretted it. And honestly it was so much easier to blame Cassie for all the times he regretted something or when everything didn't go right. And right now, things didn't seem right. He wasn't in the mood for the party so he hadn't looked at the theme, hadn't prepared himself... properly. He honestly wasn't ready, not i
Chapter 35The arrangement of the house on forty third street was exactly how Adrian had gotten his wealth, unplanned, large and with a backbone that had carried it all and when he noticed the tower in the middle was ruining the decor of the house, he asked an architect to take it out, unluckily he got a very terrible one and they ended up cutting it from the root and now the whole house was shaky. He also hated metaphors and how stupid they could be, how much it sounded like the one using it was smart when in fact they are equally— if not moreso stupid than thinking with your brain. All he knew was that there was a fault in the stars of Hales hub and he didn’t know what to do. He was clad in a full piece suit and a file in his hands, there should be important documents and stuff in it but he favored Serena’s pictures. It was probably his most kept secret at that point, he would rather reveal to everybody that at ten, he ate a life bug and he used to be a kleptomaniac for the rest of h
