At the party

MIA’S POV

“Your father is dead, Mia. None of us wanted this to happen. You need to stop grieving and accept Justin as your stepfather.” My mother pleaded while placing her hands on my shoulder, trying to persuade me, but I wasn’t having it.

“Never! Your new husband is the reason for our misfortune. Because of him, you left us all by ourselves, not bothering to check up on your daughter. Mother, you are cruel. How could you leave us because of another man?” I demanded, trying my best to control the anger that stirred within me. I knew my mother was greedy, but I wanted this to be a dream. My desire was to wake up to see my mother and father by my side but I knew it wasn’t possible because my father was dead and my greedy mother was married to another man.

How could my mother be so heartless? It wasn’t even up to a month that my father died. Rather than mourning his death, she was partying and drinking with her new husband, Justin.

Five years before my father died, my evil mum divorced my father because she met another man while we went on a family vacation.

The look on my father’s face was one that I could never forget. My mother left me with my father and that ever since that day, I swore to never talk to my mother again.

But here I am today. I didn’t have a choice. My only option was to leave my country and the memories behind, just to stay with my mother. She begged me to come, and I genuinely thought she had changed.

At first, I wanted to let it go, but seeing my mother and Justin together made my blood boil.

My mother was about to open her mouth to say something, but I interrupted harshly. “Mother, you are shameless. No sane woman would ever leave her daughter and her loving husband behind. You moved to another country and married a good-for-nothing man. I hate you.” The fury in me sprang back to life, and I yanked her hand away from my shoulder. In an instant, she crumpled to the ground, clutching her cheeks and wailing loudly.

“Forgive me Mia, I should have been there for you when you needed me the most.”

“It is too late, mother. You were never there. This is all your fault. Because of your shameful act, my father suffered for years and eventually died of a heart attack. I don’t pray to have a mother like you in my next life.” I snapped, not giving her a chance to respond.

My good-for-nothing stepfather’s voice cut through the chaos. “Mia, I know we don’t get along well, but you need to forgive your mother and let go of the past. Raining insults on your mother will not change anything.”

As my stepfather descended the stairs, I let out an exasperated sign and sank into the fluffy couch. My stepfather was playing the caring husband and the loving stepdad, helping his wife onto the couch. He asked with concern laced in his voice.

“Are you hurt? Should I take you to the hospital?”

My mother nodded her head, assuring him that she was fine, and then he turned his attention back to me.

“Stay out of this, you are not my father. Do not interfere in my family affair.” I quickly uttered, letting know that I didn’t want him to interfere in our mother-daughter conversation.

“I am your stepfather, young lady, and your mother is my wife. Mia Wilson, watch your tongue. I won’t stand here and watch you make rude remarks about your mum,” my stepfather declared, his voice trailing off as I angrily stood up. All I wanted was to escape this house and leave for the party.

Feigning an exaggerated yawn, I showed my frustration. Mom shot me a fearful look, and I stared right back at her, unfazed by the innocent look she always had on her face.

“Where are you going to Mia? Come back here.” My mum’s frustrated voice echoed, but I paid no heed. I stormed into the garage and into my car.

Our family wasn’t always like this. There was a time when we were genuinely happy. My mum was madly in love with my father, and anyone who saw them would have sworn that they were made for each other. However, everything fell apart right before their eyes and my father tried his best to stop my family from falling apart. Sometimes I can’t help but wonder what life would have been like if my mother hadn’t broken our family bond.

***

I arrived at the party, trying my best to not feel bothered about what happened between me and my mom.

There were a lot of influential people at the party, but that didn’t stop me from raising my head high.

Right when I was about to take a sip out of my wine, a handsome man walked towards me.

“Hey beautiful”

Making friends had always been easy for me. I was not only pretty, but I was classy and attractive. My curvy body, not forgetting to mention, my milky smooth skin paved ways for me and I effortlessly got a modelling job on the first week of my arrival in the country. The thought of it always made me feel dizzy with excitedness.

“Hi” I greeted briefly, before turning my attention back to my drink.

“It will be rude of me to not mention how pretty you are. I couldn’t help but notice your beautiful figure when you walked into the room.” The man said in a flirtatious tone while scrutinizing me.

“Thank you” I rolled my eyes to show that I was uninterested, silently wishing he would leave me alone.

A lady in a red dress approached us. The makeup on her face was heavy, and I tried my best to contain my laughter. I recognized her immediately. She almost had the same appearance she had five years ago when we used to be friends. I just could not help but wonder what she was doing at the party.

“What are you doing with this whore?” She spat viscously at my face, directing her question to the man.

I wanted to speak, but the man shot me an apologetic look. He looked at her with a menacing glare, but the lady was unfazed by the anger that should have sent shivers down her spine.

“You are a shameless whore, and I do not want to see you with my friend. Leave us alone. I want to talk to him in private.” She hissed viciously before trying to raise her dirty hands on me.

I caught it mid-air and gripped her wrist tightly, before saying with clenched teeth. “He approached me and clearly wants to take to me. If you have a problem with that, then go fuck yourself. All you are good at is throwing yourself at every man you can find. I’m not as useless as you are and certainly not the bitch of the town like you portray yourself to be. Get out of my face before I show you what I’m made of.”

“Come with me, Harry, or regret it for the rest of your life.” The lady threatened the man and then turned to me, before saying with clenched teeth. “I will not let you get away with this bitch.”
