MAXWELL POV

The silence had barely settled when it broke. A hard knock slammed against the door. Once first then twice. Before anyone could speak, the door burst open.

“Police!” The word cut through the room like shattered glass.

Four men stepped in—two in uniform, two in plain clothes. Their presence was immediate, suffocating. Authority filled the space, heavy and undeniable. Joe flinched so violently his chair screeched backward. Collins staggered to his feet, eyes wild, breath coming in short, panicked bursts.

For a brief second, no one moved. Then Collins collapsed.

He dropped to his knees with a sob, rubbing his hands together furiously, as if friction could erase guilt.

“Maxwell… please,” he cried, crawling forward. “Please. Don’t do this. We can fix it. We swear. The money—we’ll return everything. Every cent. Just call them off. You didn’t have to do this.”

Joe followed, his composure disintegrating completely. His face was grey now, lips trembling, eyes wet.

PAIN THAT LINGERAnne’s POV.Eleanor’s lips trembled before she nodded.“Yes,” she whispered. “I aborted five pregnancies. Five. For him.”The words landed fully this time, not as sound, but as weight—crushing, unforgiving. My chest convulsed, and before I could stop myself, a broken sob tore out of me. I pressed my hand to my mouth, but the pain spilled anyway, hot and relentless.“Oh God…” I cried. “Oh God, my baby…”All the nights I had blamed myself. All the mornings I woke up hollow, convinced my body had failed me. All the silent prayers that had gone unanswered. It wasn’t my body. It was him. Crystal.“That evil man,” I said through tears, my voice shaking with fury. “That heartless, calculated, wicked man. He looked at me and smiled. He touched my hands. He slept beside me knowing he had already decided to kill my child.”My shoulders shook violently now. “He used medicine—the very thing meant to heal—to destroy me. What kind of monster does that?”Eleanor dropped to her knees

OLD FRIEND Anne's POV Marriage had softened some of the sharp edges of my past, but it had not erased them.Maxwell liked our weekends simple—quiet mornings, shared laughter, errands that felt oddly intimate because we did them together. That Saturday, he leaned against the kitchen counter with a boyish smile and said, “We’re out of foodstuff again. Let’s restock properly.”I laughed. “You say that every week.”“And every week, you agree,” he teased.I did. So I took the car and drove to the large grocery store on the edge of town, the one with wide aisles and bright lights and a way of making you feel anonymous among strangers. I welcomed the anonymity. Some days, peace was found in blending in.I grabbed a cart and pushed through the entrance, already running through a mental list—rice, vegetables, spices, toiletries. Normal things. Safe things. Then it happened. I turned an aisle corner too quickly and almost collided with someone. I froze.I saw her, Eleanor. Time seemed to paus

GREEDY ACQUISITION Michael's POV I don’t know how long I lay there on the cold floor, surrounded by the wreckage of my own decisions. Time lost its meaning. Regret has a way of suspending the world, trapping you in a single moment that keeps replaying itself without mercy. Eventually, my body gave in to exhaustion before my mind did. I dragged myself to the bedroom like a wounded animal seeking shelter. The bed—once a place of comfort—felt foreign. Her scent still lingered faintly on the sheets, mocking me. I didn’t bother changing. I didn’t bother thinking. I lay there fully clothed, staring into the darkness, my chest aching with a pain no medicine could cure. Sleep came, but it wasn’t rest. It was heavy and suffocating. Filled with fragments of memories—Anne’s laughter, Evie’s lies, Greg’s name echoing like a curse. I tossed and turned, my heart racing even in unconsciousness, as if my soul refused to rest knowing what awaited me. Morning arrived without mercy. The alarm r

PAIN OF REGRET Michael's POV She had planned everything–their secret wedding seven days to the time. The woman I thought is my wife is about to marry off to my rival and enemy in business. I stared at the message, then at her. And in that moment, I understood the full depth of my ruin.I had lost Anne. I had married a deception. And now, even my home felt like a stranger. Too late. Far too lateMoments later, she came down the stairs slowly, her face drained of color. She didn’t need to say anything. I already knew.“You are getting married next week.” I asked, my voice dangerously calm. She looked at me with great shock. “Don't you?” I stared at the message, then at her.I extended the phone to her, she hesitated for a short time before she fearfully accepted it from me. She held up the phone with trembling hands. Her hands began to shake, guilt clothed her from head to toe.“You're marrying off to a strange man while you are still legally married to me. It is totally strange and

I AM COOKED!Michael's POV I went upstairs like a man walking toward his own execution. The bedroom door creaked as I pushed it open, and the familiar scent of the room—our room—hit me with cruel force. Everything looked the same. The bed. The curtains. The framed wedding photo on the wall, smiling lies frozen in time. My legs gave way.I sank onto the edge of the bed, elbows on my knees, head bowed. For the first time in years, I couldn’t think straight. My thoughts collided, shattered, refused to form sense. The rage that had carried me moments ago drained away, leaving something far worse behind which is pain.A hot sting burned behind my eyes. I clenched my jaw, determined not to break. But betrayal has a way of humiliating even the strongest resolve. A tear slipped free. Then another.I laughed once—short, broken. Look at you, Michael, betrayed, foole, reduced to tears by a woman you trusted with your name, your home, your future.I had given up everything for her. Everything!A

THE REGRET Michael’s POVI don’t remember deciding to go to the club. I only remember driving. The city lights blurred past me as if they were running away too, neon streaks cutting through the dark like open wounds. My hands were tight on the steering wheel, knuckles white, jaw locked so hard my teeth ached. Every breath burned. Her face kept flashing before me. The room and the stranger. The sound.I hit the brakes outside a nightclub I’d been to once—long ago, when recklessness still felt like freedom. Music thumped through the walls, heavy and aggressive, vibrating the pavement. I parked without care and stepped inside, letting the noise swallow me whole. The smell of alcohol, sweat, and false laughter hit me instantly.“Wine,” I barked at the bartender, dropping into a stool. “Your the most exotic.”He didn’t ask questions. He just poured. I drank like I was trying to drown something that refused to die.Glass after glass burned down my throat. The music grew louder. The lights
