LOGINEveryone believes Sebastian Kane is a prisoner in his own body, the brilliant heir silenced by a vicious attack that left him unresponsive. To the world, he is a tragic figure, his mind locked away behind a body that refuses to respond. Ivy Sinclair is only meant to be his caretaker, a pharmacist who needs the income to fund her desperate search for a treatment for her brother's illness. She never expects to find herself speaking her fears, hopes, and quiet observations to the silent man in the bed, treating him not as an object of pity, but as someone she can trust. But Sebastian hears every word and the more time Ivy spends beside him, the harder it becomes for him to remain a silent stranger. Sebastian watches as Ivy begins uncovering pieces of a puzzle she doesn't even know exists. Her compassion, intelligence, and determination draw him closer to her, even as the danger surrounding him grows. Because Sebastian isn't as helpless as everyone believes and Ivy may be the only person who can help him uncover the truth before the people who silenced him realize he is listening.
View More"Did you think you could humiliate me in front of everyone and then simply walk away?" Mr. Carter moved around the desk with a fluid, predatory speed that sent me stumbling backward.
"I didn't humiliate you," I managed, though my voice emerged thinner than I intended. "I corrected a prescription that could have harmed a patient."
The air in the office grew heavy, smelling of old paper and the cloying scent of Carter's cologne.
"You always have to be right, don't you?" he said, closing the distance between us until I could feel the warmth radiating from him.
"You're trying to make me look incompetent."he said, moving closer until my back hit the wall with a dull thud.
"Mr. Carter, please move..."
He didn't.
Before I could sidestep him, he planted one palm flat against the wall beside my head, caging me in. His other hand caught my shoulder, fingers digging in just enough to hurt.
The shift was so sudden, so disorienting, that for a heartbeat my mind refused to process what was happening.
"What are you doing?" I demanded, my hands coming up to push against his chest.
He ignored the question, his touch sliding down my side to rest on my hip, a proprietary gesture that made my skin crawl, then his other hand left the wall, moving to my breast, his thumb pressing hard against the peak of my nipple through the thin fabric of my scrubs.
The invasive, deliberate touch sent a jolt of pure revulsion through me and a scream ripped from my throat, raw and terrified.
His hand was over my mouth in an instant, the leather of his watch strap scraping my cheek and panic flooded my veins, cold and sharp.
I thrashed against him, fingers scrabbling at his wrist, nails biting into his skin as I tried to pry his hand away but he was stronger than he looked, his grip unyielding, his other hand still kneading my breast with a proprietary entitlement that made bile rise in my throat.
The world narrowed to the wall at my back, the pressure of his body, and the suffocating heat of his palm over my face.
Then, there was a knock.
We both froze, the sound echoing in the sudden silence like rifle shots. "Mr. Carter?" His secretary's voice, muffled by the heavy wood door. "Mrs. Kane is here for her consultation." Carter released me so abruptly that I staggered, the wall the only thing keeping me upright.
He took a step back and adjusted his jacket, his breathing barely disturbed. The transformation was so quick that it made my stomach twist. One second, he had been holding me against the wall; the next, he looked like an ordinary senior pharmacist preparing to receive an important visitor.
“Come in,” he called, his voice perfectly composed.
The door opened, and an elegant woman stepped into the office.
She was dressed simply but expensively, with her dark hair pulled neatly away from her face and a leather handbag resting against her arm. Her eyes moved first to Carter, then to me, and I watched a faint crease appear between her brows.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Carter.”
“Good afternoon, Mrs. Kane.” Carter smiled as though nothing unusual had happened. “Please, have a seat.”
I couldn't move.
My heart was still pounding violently, my cheek still tingling where his watch had scraped it, and every instinct in me screamed to get away from that office.
The woman glanced at me again.
“Is everything all right?”
I opened my mouth, but my throat tightened and Carter answered before I could.
“Of course, we were just discussing a workplace matter.”
His calm voice made something inside me burn.
A workplace matter, as if he hadn't just put his hands on me and I hadn't been struggling to breathe beneath his palm.
The woman didn't immediately respond. Her gaze lingered on me for another moment, and I could tell she had noticed something was wrong, even if she didn't know what.
“You look pale,” she said gently.
“I...” My voice cracked, and I swallowed before forcing the words out. “I'm fine.”
It was a lie, and we both knew it.
Carter cleared his throat.
“She's had a stressful morning.”
I looked at him, unable to believe how easily the words came.
The woman studied him briefly before turning her attention back to me.
“You should sit down.”
“Thank you, but I'd rather go back to work.”
My voice sounded steadier this time, and I pushed myself away from the wall.
Carter's eyes followed me, and for a brief second, something warning flashed across his face but I ignored it. I just couldn't stay in that room another second.
“Excuse me,” I murmured, keeping my eyes on the floor as I moved toward the door.
Chapter 8Eleanor showed me where Sebastian’s medications were kept and walked me through the schedule his nurses followed. She explained which appointments were coming up, where the daily records were stored and whom I should contact if I noticed anything unusual. I listened carefully, asking questions whenever something wasn’t clear. It was familiar work in some ways, though I had never been responsible for keeping track of a routine like this inside someone’s home.“I’ll leave a copy of the schedule in the room,” she said, closing the folder she had brought with her. “The nurses will be here during the day, but there may be times when you’re the only person around him for a while.”“I understand,” I replied softly, my voice firm despite the nervous flutter in my chest.“And please, Ivy,” Eleanor paused, her composed facade cracking just enough to reveal the desperate mother underneath. Her eyes searched mine, her tone pleading. “If anything concerns you, call me, even if you think
I agreed to the trial period before my mind could talk me out of it.The thought of Noah's medical bills, the endless stack of invoices sitting on the kitchen counter, made the choice easier. Two days later, after finishing my shift at the pharmacy, I found myself sitting in the passenger seat of Eleanor Kane’s sedan. The drive to the Kane estate took us out of the busy commercial district and into an enclave of quiet, guarded estates hidden behind high stone walls and wrought-iron gates. When the car finally turned through the sweeping entrance of the Kane property, I couldn't stop my hands from tightening around the strap of my bag.The house was massive. It was all limestone, slate, and glass, surrounded by manicured lawns that looked like they had been measured with a ruler. Tall arched windows reflected the fading afternoon light, giving the entire place a distant, almost imposing grandeur. It was a world completely separate from mine. At home, our space was filled with the clut
Mrs. Kane waited until the last of the evening's customers had left before gesturing for me to follow her somewhere quieter. I wiped my hands with a tissue and caught Maya's eye. She was already looking at me with obvious curiosity, and I knew she'd want the full story later. Mrs. Kane led me into the small, sterile consultation room adjacent to the pharmacy, a space usually reserved for patient counseling. We sat across from each other, the flimsy chairs feeling too formal for the gravity that suddenly settled in the air between us. For a long moment, she seemed unsure of where to begin, her gaze drifting to the institutional posters on the wall before returning to me. "I wanted to talk to you about Sebastian."I wasn't expecting that. "Is something wrong with his prescription?" "No." She shook her head, a decisive movement. "His medications are fine." I waited, the silence stretching, filled only by the distant hum of the pharmacy lights. "I've been thinking about what happened y
The morning rush had already begun by the time I pushed through the pharmacy doors. A queue of patients had formed at the counter, the phone was ringing every few minutes, and Maya was trying to organize a stack of prescriptions while answering a question from one of the assistants. She caught my eye as I shrugged off my coat, a flicker of relief in her own. "You're early.""Only by a few minutes.""Still counts," she said, sliding a printed slip across the counter toward me. I tucked my bag into its usual hiding spot beneath the register. "What did I miss?""Nothing exciting," she replied, though her tone suggested otherwise."Mrs. Parker called twice about her refill, the delivery came in twenty minutes ago, and Chloe nearly sent the wrong medication upstairs again."I looked up from the slip, my brow furrowing. "Again?"Maya let out a long-suffering sigh. "She's learning." I couldn't help the soft laugh that escaped. The morning settled into its familiar, demanding rhythm after
