ANMELDENDiana's POV
It's not him. It can't be him. It's all in your head. That was the only words ringing in my head. His hand stayed open for a handshake but I couldn't take it. He let it drop to his side. “I'm a cardiologist and your father's personal doctor.” Snap out it, Diana! “Oh. Yes. Uhm…Thank you for taking good care of him. I'm Diana. His daughter,” I said. What was I doing? I had seen hot men before. First, I had confused him for the new CEO to my father's former company and now I was drooling over him while my father was lying comatose in the same room. His bright green eyes held mine and I felt hot all of a sudden. The air in the room shifted, growing thick with sudden tension. We acted awkward, avoiding each other's gaze, until he offered his hand to me as second time. I took it. We locked eyes again, but this time, the contact lasted even longer. He let go then turned the pages of the file and started talking medicine. “Your father has been responding quite well to treatment.” “Will he ever wake up?” I asked. “At this rate. I can say he has a good chance of doing that.” That brought a big smile to my face. For once, I had a good news. I looked down at him and heard Doctor Xavier’s voice. “You know he can hear you. It's best it you're positive so he can gain strength from that.” I smiled, nodding happily. “I should go. I have an interview in ten minutes.” He opened the door for me. I felt my heart pounding as I left the room. I touched my chest and breathed out for a second. “Don't act out. You're fine.” I went out looking for a job. Broke and penniless I needed one as quick as possible. For the next couple of hours, each company I applied to turned me down. I didn't understand why this was happening. Desperate, I got to a coffee shop and tried my luck. The middle-aged woman looked at me scornfully and judged me by my expensive clothes. I begged. She was my last hope. “I can do any work. I really need this.” She had a look of disbelief and then she pushed an empty cup to me. “Make me a nice coffee,” she ordered. I took off my coat and made the woman a cafe latte, my eyes focused. She kept her judgmental look on and muttered that it better be nice. She sipped, and her eyes brightened. Her soft nod excited me. “It's great. You're hired.” I changed into an orange shirt and black pants with flat shoes. I started serving coffee to the customers at their tables. I took a tray of cafe latte and baguette to a table. I placed it down, looked up and my eyes met his. Holy shit! It was Doctor Xavier. My mind raced with questions. Why was he here at that moment of all places? He does have the right to go anywhere he wants. I heard someone coughing and a female voice startled me. “You sure love fixing you hair into my coffee.” I straightened up, noticing her for the first time. “I…I'm sorry. I didn't mean to.” She nodded and I glanced at the handsome doctor. He had a girlfriend. He took a sip of his caramel tea and dropped it. “Could you add more cream, please?” I nodded, took the cup of tea from him, and walked away, returning with a new tray. I was almost at his table when an angry customer pushed one of the servers. The server lost his stance and fell on me. I fell but caught myself, yet the tea spilled all over Xavier's clothes and the cup smashed to the floor in pieces before I could stop it. I gasped in shock. That was it. I was going to get fired on my first day. I apologized over and over again to Xavier and gave him a clean napkin. “It's nothing,” he said, cleaning himself. “I'm going to sue this stupid coffee shop!” The angry customer yelled and pushed the other server then left. I stood there, puzzled, stressed, and pinching my nails as I waited for the worst. “Diana!” The manager called. Lord, take my soul. She glared hard at me, scolding me with her eyes. I opened my mouth to defend myself but stopped when someone came forward. His deep voice made me turn. “One cup of Caramel tea with extra cream.” I looked at my manager, stunned. “What are you waiting for?” She yelped. I got to work, making a new batch. Xavier took it, sipped it, and praised it. “It's delicious.” He paid and smiled at me before returning to his seat. I was stunned. He smiled at me. Oh my gosh! For the rest of the day, I was stealing peeks at him from the counter. The day got daker, he left with his date and a few hours later, the shop closed. I arranged the last cups and walked to my car, when I felt a presence behind me. I slowly peeked back and saw a masked man following me. I panicked and started walking faster to my car. His pace increased and…I ran.Diana's POVHe caught up to me, slammed me against my car, and took out a dagger. “Give me your money now!”I shook with fear. “I don't have any,” I begged.“Don't play with me,” he spat, shoving the dagger close to my face.I screamed and his fist hit my face. “Shut up!”I did.“Give me your bag and car key.”I didn't hesitate, and surrendered. He pushed me off, entered the car and was about to close the door when a tall man rushed at him.The man stopped the door from closing, and punched the thief. He dragged him out, tossing him to the floor like a rag doll.Every hard punch made a cracking sound and I flinched.“Stop!” I screamed. The stranger’s fist stopepd mid-air. He grabbed my purse from the floor, dusted it and rose to his feet.“Get lost!” The stranger warned. The thief scrambled to his feet and ran away. The tall stranger came to me and helped me to my feet. The bright street light landed on his face and I gasped.“Xavier,” I breathed. “W…why are you here?”“I was going to

Diana's POVI drove home and went straight to the bar. I poured myself a drink and gulped it down in one go.It burned my throat, but the pain felt good. I started chugging down the alcohol straight from the bottle.I got dizzy and lightheaded.Sam came in, and he ran to me. “Diana. No, stop.”“Go away,” I shooed and chunked another large gulp of whiskey. “Child, that's enough!”The loudness of his voice made me shake and I sobbed. This wasn't supposed to happen. Everything was falling apart. My hand lost I grip and the bottle dropped to the floor, smashing into pieces.I felt the world spinning, and I fell, his old strong hands held me as I passed out.~The morning sun reached my face. I groaned and slowly woke up.I had a bad hangover and held my forehead, enduring the banging headache.I got out of bed and tried to remember what happened yesterday.I went down to the living room and saw the servants all lined up.They had downcast looks on their faces.“What's wrong?” I asked.
Diana's POV“He's not dead?” I asked, and the doctor shook his head. That was something. It was not good news but it wasn't bad either.“And how long will he remain in that state?” I asked, pinching my fingernails with the other.“I don't know. Weeks. Maybe days or…”“Or what?” I asked, blinking and gulped as his lips moved.“For a long time.”I felt my mind blow apart. A heavy drum beat in my ears.I stepped back and stumbled, the strength leaving my legs, and I fell. The doctor caught me. “Are you okay?”I nodded, not understanding anything.“Breathe,” he instructed. “Slowly. That's it.”I followed his instructions, holding his arm tight. “Is he ever going to recover?”The doctor looked sad. “Honestly,” he said gently, like he was scared I would lose consciousness. “There's every possibility that he will make it.”He was probably telling me that so I didn't lose my mind.“Do you believe in miracles?” He asked.I was lost for a couple of seconds then nodded.“That's good. If you keep
Chapter 1Diana’s POVI closed the front door behind me and called out loud. “Mom!”The silence greeted me. That was odd. She was always home. Dad had arrived with me and was taking out the grocery bags from the car's trunk.I called again, louder this time. “Mom!!!”But the house remained still.I walked forward to check the living room but it was empty, and even the kitchen was devoid of life.I walked up the stairs and called for her again, but instead of her voice, a low moan drifted through the hallway. “Oh, yes. Harder!”I paused.I assumed it was my parents, so I hurriedly turned around to climb back down the stairs. That's when I heard it. Mom moaned a name that stopped me cold. “Oh, Julian.”Hold on a damn minute! My father was in my car and his name was Mark. There was no reason for her to be calling Julian's name in that tone.I shook my head and tried to refuse the idea but it wouldn't go away.Who the hell was in there with her?My mother moaned louder and I heard the dis
