NATHALIE’S POV

-

I instantly drop my smile.

“But why…” I asked after he ended the call.

It’s hard to get into Lewis company. It’s almost impossible to get into that company. Out of a hundred applicants I was with when I applied, only three of us got in.

So it was heavy on my heart with just one word from a Calix Zander Watson, I lost my job after years of hard work.

“You said you’d accept the consequences?” He innocently question me back.

“Yes, but…” Both of my shoulders slumped.

I anticipated my firing, especially given our client’s is Watson company. It’s just... I couldn’t explain myself and prove my ability to deliver the presentation.

The presentation I was about to do was the first time I would speak to many people again.

I have a fear of public speaking. I will try to fight this fear of mine through this presentation. But it seems like this is not for me.

“Thank you.” At least my coworkers weren’t affected.

Sir Calix turned his full attention back to his iP*d, while mwe, I took my phone out of my bag when it vibrated.

Once I checked a message from one of my coworkers and asked if it was true I had been fired, she also said they had extended the presentation for two months.

I replied, stating I had been fired and apologizing for the need to redo the presentation. She replied it was okay because I had done almost everything.

I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing they didn’t hold any grudges against me.

I hid the phone in my bag again, then took a quick glance at Sir Calix.

He seemed like a very busy person and it was embarrassing to disturb even five seconds of his time.

I faked a cough to spoke again.

“Where are you taking me?” I asked. “You don’t have any bad intentions for me?” I added.

The corner of his mouth became pointed downwards.

Why was he agitated? I have the right to know where he’s taking me, for my safety.

“We’re going to the hospital.” He said coldly.

I was stunned for a moment, then glanced out the window as I remembered my mother.

I didn’t know how to tell my mother I no longer had the money to pay for her surgery.

My mother’s three gallbladders need to be removed this month, otherwise it will endanger her life.

I tilted my head and glanced at Sir Calix.

I didn’t understand why he was treating me like this. There’s nothing wrong with how he treated me. It’s just strange he let me stay at his mansion, he extended the time for my coworkers and now I’m going to accompany him to the hospital?

Whatever his reason, I guess I can borrow at least thirty thousand dollars from him?

That kind of money is probably a small amount to him and most of all I will pay him back—when I find a new job.

I opened my mouth but closed it, and looked back outside.

I’ll talk to him after he finishes his business at the hospital we’re going to.

I also need courage for what I’m going to do.

The time I saw the big sign name of the hospital we were going to, my eyes widened.

We were about to enter the parking lot of Smith Medical Center Hospital. This hospital is a famous hospital for everything, from the smallest illness to the rarest illness, they can treat it.

Admitting my mother here wouldn’t worry me because her safety is assured, but the expenses are very high. A regular room starts at five thousand dollars.

“Let’s go.”

I snapped out of my thoughts following I heard his voice.

When Sir Calix got off, I got out of the car.

He ordered the driver not to follow us.

I followed him until we entered the elevator. He was the one who pressed the button to go to the sixth floor.

We were both silent until we reached the sixth floor.

While following Sir Calix, I couldn’t stop looking around and marveling. This is what this hospital looks like, like a hotel. The hallway is also wide.

Arriving in front of a private room, my whole being seemed to shake after seeing the name of the patient admitted to this room.

Margaret Davis. Same as my mother’s name.

I don’t want to assume, but going inside I saw my mom who had just finished taking the vital signs.

“Thank you, nurse.” My mother said to the nurse.

“Your welcome, Ma’am.” The nurse replied calmly.

A smile appeared on my mom’s lips the moment she saw me. “Nathalie, my beautiful daughter.”

While I felt as if my soul had escaped the moment it sank into me my mother was in front of me.

“M-Mom…” I called out in tears, with a sound coming out of my mouth.

I go near to my mom and hugged her. Seeing she was in good condition makes me in tears.

“Why are you crying?”

I broke away from the hug. “I’m happy to see you, mom.”

My mom wiped my cheek. “You should smile if you’re happy,” she joked.

I took a deep breath to stop myself from crying.

“They moved my surgery. Tomorrow I will have my surgery here.”

“What?” I asked in surprise.

“The doctors said her body must be in good condition before they operate.”

I turned my full attention to Sir Calix.

“She was moved here around five am, and to ensure her body is in good condition, her surgery was moved. It won’t affect her body and health. Besides, the doctor I requested will be back tomorrow morning.”

“Is my mother going to have surgery at this hospital?”

“Yes. And it’s scheduled for tomorrow night.”

I was so grateful for what he was doing, but I couldn’t help but wonder.

“Why are you doing this?” I query.

NATHALIE’S POV-“Why did it turn out that way?” I couldn’t hide my worry. “What happened?”“Nathalie, you hurt the father and daughter with your sudden leaving. What made you think they’d get over it so quickly? Even if Brianna gets close to everyone around her, the love you gave her is different; nothing can compare. Calix, especially, didn’t have time to process you just up and leaving. They love you, that’s why they were so deeply hurt.”It wasn’t sarcastic, nor was it in a tone blamed me, she was simply stating the obvious reason.“I am not blaming you.” She assured me.“But it really is all my fault.”She didn’t deny it and sighed. “When you pick up your scrub suit, would you mind bringing him some food? He hasn’t been eating properly and mostly just has alcohol in his system. He’s asking for alcohol again right now. Maybe if you gave him food, he’d eat something, even if it’s just a little. Please, just try.”“I’ll try.” I agreed.“Okay, you stay here. I’ll go get some food for

Currently, we are en route to the mansion.Brianna and I were both in the backseat, she was wrapped in a jacket and sitting on my lap while I hugged her.Inadvertently, my gaze drifted to the rearview mirror, where I unexpectedly found Sir Calix’s eyes meeting mine through the reflection.I avoided his gaze, turning my attention to Brianna and making a show of checking on her, even though she was soundly sleeping.....Upon arriving at the mansion, it was already afternoon, and time for Brianna to take her medicine. When Sir Calix stopped the car at the main door, I gently woke Brianna by softly calling out to her.“Brianna, baby. NATHALIE’S POV-I’ve been sitting quietly for hours, watching Brianna.I can’t even bring myself to shut my eyes, not for a single moment, until she wakes up, until I’m certain she’s alright, and most importantly, until her fever subsides. On the other side, Sir Calix is sitting on the sofa a little far from the hospital bed, focused on the laptop he sent William a while ago.“Nathalie,” he called me casually.I shifted my gaze to him. “It’s already 3 AM. You need to sleep.”I shook my head. “I can’t sleep either, sir.”He nodded, closed the laptop and stood up. “I’ll buy you some food.”Before I could refuse, he left and exited the private room.I just sighed as I thought about our situation.I want to get out from under his thumb again, but I can’t just leave Brianna behind again.I glanced back at Brianna, and the second I looked at her, my eyes rounded in delight as her pair of brown eyes opened.“Baby...” I whispered. She blinked and her vision became clear. CALIX’S POV-Veronica peered out of the expansive windows in the corner. I approached her, my face devoid of expression.“Were you the one who called the social workers?” I asked as soon as I got close to her. With a smirk, she turned to me. “Yup, I was the one who called and sent them to your mansion. I told you I would take my niece, come what may.”“Have you any idea what your actions have done to my child?”“Your child?” she laughed mockingly. “She’s not your daughter, Calix. You know that from the very beginning. You’re just under the illusion that Brianna is your daughter. What I can’t understand is why you married Venice in the first place? If you wanted to marry a woman who was already pregnant, you should have gotten me pregnant and married me instead.”Her words make me more disgusted with her.“What do you want in exchange for leaving Brianna and me alone?”“I have been saying what I want for a long time and I will repeat it until I get what I want. Wait, do you know anything about Veronica saying she’s going to get my granddaughter?”“I don’t know anything about it,” I denied. “Sir Calix would never allow that.” I added, trying to reassure her.“You’re right.
