LOGINNATHALIE’S POV
-
I instantly drop my smile.
“But why…” I asked after he ended the call.
It’s hard to get into Lewis company. It’s almost impossible to get into that company. Out of a hundred applicants I was with when I applied, only three of us got in.
So it was heavy on my heart with just one word from a Calix Zander Watson, I lost my job after years of hard work.
“You said you’d accept the consequences?” He innocently question me back.
“Yes, but…” Both of my shoulders slumped.
I anticipated my firing, especially given our client’s is Watson company. It’s just... I couldn’t explain myself and prove my ability to deliver the presentation.
The presentation I was about to do was the first time I would speak to many people again.
I have a fear of public speaking. I will try to fight this fear of mine through this presentation. But it seems like this is not for me.
“Thank you.” At least my coworkers weren’t affected.
Sir Calix turned his full attention back to his iP*d, while mwe, I took my phone out of my bag when it vibrated.
Once I checked a message from one of my coworkers and asked if it was true I had been fired, she also said they had extended the presentation for two months.
I replied, stating I had been fired and apologizing for the need to redo the presentation. She replied it was okay because I had done almost everything.
I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing they didn’t hold any grudges against me.
I hid the phone in my bag again, then took a quick glance at Sir Calix.
He seemed like a very busy person and it was embarrassing to disturb even five seconds of his time.
I faked a cough to spoke again.
“Where are you taking me?” I asked. “You don’t have any bad intentions for me?” I added.
The corner of his mouth became pointed downwards.
Why was he agitated? I have the right to know where he’s taking me, for my safety.
“We’re going to the hospital.” He said coldly.
I was stunned for a moment, then glanced out the window as I remembered my mother.
I didn’t know how to tell my mother I no longer had the money to pay for her surgery.
My mother’s three gallbladders need to be removed this month, otherwise it will endanger her life.
I tilted my head and glanced at Sir Calix.
I didn’t understand why he was treating me like this. There’s nothing wrong with how he treated me. It’s just strange he let me stay at his mansion, he extended the time for my coworkers and now I’m going to accompany him to the hospital?
Whatever his reason, I guess I can borrow at least thirty thousand dollars from him?
That kind of money is probably a small amount to him and most of all I will pay him back—when I find a new job.
I opened my mouth but closed it, and looked back outside.
I’ll talk to him after he finishes his business at the hospital we’re going to.
I also need courage for what I’m going to do.
The time I saw the big sign name of the hospital we were going to, my eyes widened.
We were about to enter the parking lot of Smith Medical Center Hospital. This hospital is a famous hospital for everything, from the smallest illness to the rarest illness, they can treat it.
Admitting my mother here wouldn’t worry me because her safety is assured, but the expenses are very high. A regular room starts at five thousand dollars.
“Let’s go.”
I snapped out of my thoughts following I heard his voice.
When Sir Calix got off, I got out of the car.
He ordered the driver not to follow us.
I followed him until we entered the elevator. He was the one who pressed the button to go to the sixth floor.
We were both silent until we reached the sixth floor.
While following Sir Calix, I couldn’t stop looking around and marveling. This is what this hospital looks like, like a hotel. The hallway is also wide.
Arriving in front of a private room, my whole being seemed to shake after seeing the name of the patient admitted to this room.
Margaret Davis. Same as my mother’s name.
I don’t want to assume, but going inside I saw my mom who had just finished taking the vital signs.
“Thank you, nurse.” My mother said to the nurse.
“Your welcome, Ma’am.” The nurse replied calmly.
A smile appeared on my mom’s lips the moment she saw me. “Nathalie, my beautiful daughter.”
While I felt as if my soul had escaped the moment it sank into me my mother was in front of me.
“M-Mom…” I called out in tears, with a sound coming out of my mouth.
I go near to my mom and hugged her. Seeing she was in good condition makes me in tears.
“Why are you crying?”
I broke away from the hug. “I’m happy to see you, mom.”
My mom wiped my cheek. “You should smile if you’re happy,” she joked.
I took a deep breath to stop myself from crying.
“They moved my surgery. Tomorrow I will have my surgery here.”
“What?” I asked in surprise.
“The doctors said her body must be in good condition before they operate.”
I turned my full attention to Sir Calix.
“She was moved here around five am, and to ensure her body is in good condition, her surgery was moved. It won’t affect her body and health. Besides, the doctor I requested will be back tomorrow morning.”
“Is my mother going to have surgery at this hospital?”
“Yes. And it’s scheduled for tomorrow night.”
I was so grateful for what he was doing, but I couldn’t help but wonder.
“Why are you doing this?” I query.
NATHALIE’S POV 🍃-“You really think I’m gonna let what you did to Sapphire go just like that?!” he roared in rage. “I’ll never, ever forget what you did to my child.”He burst out laughing, but there was anger in it. “Sh*t on you, Nathalie! You didn’t give me any right to choose a name for my own child.”He let out a cutting breath. “It wasn’t just that you made a fool of me before, your idiocy is what took my child’s life!”“I... I...”“Are you going to apologize again? Will your sorry bring Sapphire back to life?”“Haven’t we fixed this already?” I whispered, my chest tight with a desperation that clawed at my throat.“Things would only be made right if you could bring my child back… but you can’t do that anymore.”I stood, not daring to pull my eyes from him. “Maybe… just maybe we can still fix this? We still love each other–”“Still in love with you?” he chuckled, his eyes glinting. “That godforsaken love has been long gone. I just stuck it out with you to get to this moment –
NATHALIE’S POV 🍃-The shock hit me so hard that I didn’t even register my own breath. As if my brain just burst, and I had absolutely no thoughts left.Maybe I just heard wrong, or maybe I misunderstood.“Sir–”From the pocket, he took out a long white envelope. “This is your pay. Inside is your one month’s salary and a one-year advance payment. This should be enough for your expenses while you look for a new job.” He stated, his voice cold and flat.“Work?” I found myself asking, hardly able to believe it.Do all the things I’ve shown him, all the words I’ve said to him, and above all my love for him and Brianna, mean nothing to him but part of my job?“By the time I’m back in my room, you need to be gone from my mansion. If not, I’ll make you leave.”I ran toward his front, blocking his path.“I can’t make sense of this...” I questioned, my mind spinning. “You’re telling me to leave?” I murmured without realizing it.“In my life, and my child’s life – don’t come back or show yours
NATHALIE’S POV 🍃-“Daddy Calix hurt you?”“Did Daddy Calix say anything not nice to you that hurt your feelings or made you cry?”She waved her head back and forth“Did Daddy Calix physically hurt you? Did he do something that hurt your body? Did he gave you any bruise?"She gave a small head shakeI let out a small sigh of relief.Sir Calix is not the sort of person who would inflict harm, particularly not on his daughter.I asked to confirm what she meant by why she’s scared of Sir Calix.“What are you afraid of Daddy Calix?” I inquired in a soft, compassionate wayShe picked up the tablet and wrote once more, then showed it to me – on the screen was: ‘Don’t leave me.’I nodded. “Of course, baby. I won’t leave you.” I assured her.I let out a silent sigh in my head.I glanced at what she wrote. She didn’t seem to want to answer my question.“Baby!” I brightened my tone so she wouldn’t catch on that I still want to hear the answer about why she’s afraid.“After the storytelling, wh
NATHALIE’S POV-My mom insisted that I didn’t have to come back right away, and that Brianna and I should keep up our usual routine of visiting her two to three times a week.I arrived at the mansion near nightfall. When I stepped inside, I found Esther bidding farewell to everyone and. I noticed three big suitcases as well.Donna looked over at me and joyfully called out, “Nathalie’s finally here!”They all glanced in my direction. I felt somewhat awkward about snatching everyone’s focus so quickly.“Nathalie!” Esther said happily and tearfully. She walked over to me, gave me a quick hug, and then pulled away right away.“It’s good you arrived before I left.”“Donna called me earlier.”Me and Esther turned to look at Donna simultaneously, and right after, she flipped her hair."“Did you expect anyone else?” Donna bragged.“Thank you,” Esther said with appreciation to him, then looked my way. “I didn’t want to bother you more, but I’m very happy to say goodbye to you in person.”“I’m
NATHALIE’S POV-“I can manage this. You don’t have to keep worrying about me.”I let mom get out of the car alone. When she got out, she turned to Harrison who gave us a ride and asked him, “You really have to go now? Let me whip up something fast to return the favor for all you’ve done.”“Thanks, Ms. Margaret, but I really have to go. I’ve got other things to take care of. And please don’t feel like you owe me anything, spending time with you and Nat was entirely my pleasure.”“Thanks so much. You look busy indeed, but if you have a free moment, my home is always open to you, and I’ll prepare a meal for you.”“Sure, Ms. Margaret. I’ll come here when I’m not busy. Thank you.”“Don’t mention it. Alright, I’ll go in first.”Mom went into the house first; I, on the other hand, looked at Harrison again.“Thank you so much, Harrison. You’ve been helping us since yesterday. From picking up mom, looking after us in the hospital, all the way to seeing us off at our very doorstep.”“No big de
NATHALIE’S POV-After reading the news articles and comments, I put my phone and bag on the bedside table. Most of the comments I read were curious about the appearance of his fiancée, happy and impressed by his speech, especially when mentioning about his child. There was no picture of Sir Calix with Brianna at the party. I don’t think he introduced Brianna like we had planned.I gazed at the ring Sir Calix gave me.He might as well not have brought up the engagement since I wasn’t present with him.Even though he announced the engagement, I know I caused him pain when I unexpectedly left the party and wasn’t there with “I’ll talk to him tomorrow.” I whispered to myself.I picked up my phone when it beeped. That sound meant someone had sent a message.Donna was the one who sent the message. It was displayed in the message box: 'We’ve arrived at the mansion. Brianna is already asleep.'I replied, 'Thank you. Is Sir Calix there?'Almost a minute passed and Donna replied, 'He’s not h
