NATHALIE’S POV

The next morning I did the same thing. Before Brianna even woke up, I had already eaten breakfast.

I’m finding it even harder to face Sir Calix after last night. I’m so worried about what he might think. I’m a nervous wreck.

While the father and daughter were eating at the dining table, I was in the room with Esther to return the travel bag she lent me, and I was also stacking my clothes in the drawer.

“Nathalie, tell me, did something happen when the three of you went out?”

I glanced at Esther, the clothes in my hands a sudden, awkward weight. “What do you mean by that?” My voice was hesitant.

“Nothing. I was thinking that maybe you wanted to share something with me, like telling me about something else, which is why you seem to be avoiding Calix.”

Was it obvious what I was doing?

“Nathalie, why are you avoiding Calix?”

My shoulders slumped as I turned back to the drawer, putting the freshly laundered clothes.
