SARAH'S POV

The gunshot was deafening.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then chaos.

"DOWN! GET DOWN!"

Police flooded the warehouse. Flashlights. Shouting.

I hit the floor on instinct, hands over my head. My heart was trying to climb out of my throat.

"Clear!"

"Suspect down!"

"Medical!"

Down.

Who was down?

I looked up.

David was on the ground. Blood spreading across his white shirt. Right shoulder. Not his head. T wasn't fatal.

Ethan was standing over him. Gun still in his hand. Face blank.

And Nina...

Nina was still on her knees. Crying. Alive.

"Hands up! Drop the weapon!"

Ethan dropped the gun. Slowly to the ground ."It was self defense. He had a gun to her head."

The FBI swarmed in. Someone cut Nina's zip ties. She fell into my arms.

"You're okay," I said to her. "You're okay. I got you."

She was shaking so bad she couldn't talk.

Paramedics pushed past us. To David.

"Sir, stay with me," one said. "Don't close your eyes."

David was looking at me. Bleeding. Smiling.

Like this was funny.

"See you soon, Sarah," he whispered.

Then they loaded him on a stretcher.

The next 6 hours were a blur.

Statements. Hospital. FBI debrief.

Nina was okay. Shaken, but okay. She will be in witness protection starting tomorrow.

David was in surgery. Stable and under arrest. Charged with kidnapping, attempted murder, obstruction.

And me?

I was sitting on a hospital bench at 5 AM, still wearing the same clothes from yesterday, with Ethan's jacket over my shoulders.

He hadn't let go of me since we left the warehouse.

"You did good," Ethan said quietly. "You didn't flinch."

"I almost threw up," I said.

"But you didn't."

I looked at him. His knuckles were bruised. From the gun?.

"Did you mean to shoot him?" I asked.

Ethan met my eyes. "I meant to stop him."

That was the most honest thing he'd said all night.

Ms. Reyes found us then. "It's done. The DA is filing charges this morning. With the new evidence, he's looking at 30 years minimum."

"And the company?" I said.

"Yours," Ms. Reyes said. "The board already voted. 6 AM. You're CEO of Miller Tech. Effective immediately."

I laughed. It came out wrong. Like a sob.

"CEO," I said. "My dad's company."

"Your company," Ethan corrected. "You took it back."

We didn't go home.

There was no home to go to. David knew every address.

So Ethan took me to his.

Not the penthouse. A different one. A safe house, he called it.

It was quiet. Sun coming through the windows. No cameras. No staff.

I showered for 40 minutes. Trying to wash off the warehouse, the handcuffs, the last 3 years.

When I came out, Ethan was in the kitchen. Coffee. Toast. Like this was normal.

"Sit," he said.

I did.

We ate in silence.

Then I said it.

"He lied to me."

Ethan looked up.

"About everything," I said. "The accident. The drugs. The company. Even the night he proposed. It was all a lie."

Ethan reached across the table and took my hand.

"I know," he said.

"Do you?" I said. "Because I keep thinking... what if I had listened? What if I left in 2023 like I planned? My dad would still be alive. The company wouldn't be a mess. I wouldn't have married him."

"You couldn't have known," Ethan said.

"But I should have," I said. "I'm his daughter. I should have seen it."

"Sarah." Ethan's voice was firm. "Stop. You were 22. He was 35 and a master manipulator. This is not your fault."

I nodded. But it didn't feel true yet.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number. Again.

I almost didn't answer.

Then I did.

"Sarah Miller?" A man's voice. Older.

"Who is this?"

"Detective Morris. Homicide. We need you to come down to the station."

My stomach dropped. "Why? David's in custody."

"It's about your father," Detective Morris said. "We found something in David's house. During the warrant. Something you need to see."

The coffee turned to acid in my mouth.

"What is it?"

"I can't say over the phone," he said. "Can you come in? Now?"

I looked at Ethan.

He heard it. "We're on our way."

The police station was different in the daylight. Less scary.

Detective Morris was waiting. Grey hair. Kind eyes.

"Ms. Miller," he said. "Thank you for coming."

He led us to a room. Evidence table.

On it: a laptop. A journal. And a USB drive.

"We found these in a safe in Mr. Blackham's home office," Detective Morris said. "Behind a painting. The safe was biometric. Only opened with his fingerprint."

"And?" Ethan said.

Detective Morris picked up the journal. "This is your father's."

I froze.

"My dad's?"

"Yes," Detective Morris said. "Last entry is dated June 13, 2023. The night before you were admitted."

He opened it.

My dad's handwriting. Messy. Written in a Hurried way

“David came by tonight. Said the investors were pulling out. Said I had to sign over 20% of Miller Tech or he'd go to the press with the "lab incident." Blackmail. I told him no. Told him I was going to the board tomorrow. He got angry. Said I was making a mistake. Sarah is going to be so disappointed in me."

My hands started shaking.

"The 'lab incident'?" I said.

Detective Morris turned the page.

“If anything happens to me, tell Sarah to check the drive. Password is her birthday. All the proof is there. Don't trust David."

I looked at the USB.

"That's it," Detective Morris said. "We think your father knew David was going to hurt him. We think... we think it wasn't a heart attack."

The room felt hot instantly.

"My dad didn't have a heart attack?" I whispered.

"We're reopening the case," Detective Morris said. "Toxicology. New autopsy. But Sarah, I need you to look at what's on that drive."

Ethan stood beside me and tapped my shoulders gently.

I took the USB. My hands were numb.

Back at the safe house.

We plugged it in.

Folder after folder. Financial records. Emails. Photos.

And one video file.

*06_13_2023_11PM.mp4*

I clicked it.

Security footage.

My dad's office at Miller Tech.

My dad. Sitting at his desk. Looking stressed.

Door opens.

David.

They talk. I can't hear it. No audio.

My dad stands up. Shouting.

David reaches into his jacket.

Pulls out a glass.

Pours something into my dad's coffee.

Hands it to him.

My dad drinks it.

5 minutes later, he clutches his chest. Then falls.

David watches. For a full minute.

Then he calls 911.

"CPR. My business partner. Heart attack."

The video ends.

I couldn't breathe.

"He killed him," I said. "David killed my dad."

Ethan was on the phone already. "Detective? We have it. We have a video."

I stood up. I walked to the window.

Three years.

Three years I thought my dad just died. That I was alone.

And David did it.

"Why?" I said out loud. "Why would he do that?"

Ethan came up behind me. "Because your dad was going to expose him. Because David wanted Miller Tech. Because he's a monster."

I turned. "And I married him."

"Because he lied to you," Ethan said. "Because he told you your dad died naturally. Because he made you think you were crazy."

I started crying. shaking sobs.

For my dad.

For 22-year-old me.

For all the time I wasted.

Ethan pulled me into his arms. No words. Just held me while I fell apart.

When I finally stopped, my face was swollen and my throat hurt.

"I want to see him," I said.

"Who?" Ethan said.

"David," I said. "In jail. I want to look him in the eye and ask him why."

Ethan frowned. "That's not a good idea. He's dangerous."

"I don't care," I said. "I need to hear it from him. I need to know why he lied to me."

Ethan sighed. "Fine. But I'm coming. And guards. And cameras."

County Jail. Visiting room. Glass between us.

David looked terrible. Arm in a sling. Face pale. But his eyes... his eyes were the same. Cold. Calculating.

He picked up the phone.

"Sarah," he said. Like we were having brunch.

"Why?" I said. No hello.

David smiled. "Why what?"

"Why did you kill my dad?"

David's smile faltered. For half a second.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"I have the video," I said. "Of you poisoning him."

David leaned back. "Then arrest me."

"You are arrested," I said. "For murder now too."

David looked at me for some seconds.

"You've gotten strong," he said. "I liked you better when you were scared."

"Don't," I said. "Don't you dare talk about me like you knew me."

"I did know you," David said. "I made you. I gave you everything. The wedding. The title. Mrs Blackham."

"You gave me scars," I said.

David shrugged. "Collateral damage."

Something in me snapped.

"You lied to me," I said. "About my dad. About 2023. About loving me. Was any of it real?"

David was quiet for a long time.

Then: "The company was real," he said. "The power was real. You... you were convenient."

There it was.

The truth.

I stood up.

"I'm done," I said. "I'm taking everything from you. The company. Your freedom. Your name."

David laughed. "You think this is over? It's just starting, Sarah. You have no idea what I set in motion."

"What does that mean?"

David stood too. Guards moved closer.

"It means," he said, "that by this time next week, you won't be CEO. You won't be free. And you won't be with him."

He nodded at Ethan, who was standing behind the glass.

Then the guards took him away.

I stood there, phone still in my hand.

Ethan came around to my side.

"What did he mean?" I said.

"I don't know," Ethan said. "But we're going to find out."

My phone buzzed.

Email. From an anonymous address.

Subject line: " YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE GONE TO THE POLICE”

Attachment: A photo.

Of me.

Sleeping.

In Ethan's safe house.

Taken last night.

And text underneath:

  • MY EX-HUSBAND REGRETS    The Countdown

The tablet in Ethan’s kitchen was beeping right in front of me. And under it, a new timer. Red. Counting down from five minutes.00:05:00.But the beeping wasn’t coming from the tablet. It was coming from below. My blood went so cold that I couldn’t feel my hands anymore. The penthouse was empty. No bomb. No Ethan. Just me, in a ruined white dress, standing in the middle of his living room while a new countdown started somewhere I couldn’t see. My phone buzzed. Unknown number. “You picked the wrong door, wife. Good thing I like second chances.” I threw the phone, it hit the wall and cracked. I didn’t care. “Ethan!” My voice ripped out of me. “Ethan!” No response . Just the beeping sound, non stop. Steady from somewhere down. I ran to the balcony doors and pushed them open. The city air hit me, sharp and cold. Lights everywhere, and 8 floors down, traffic, people moving about. And somewhere in this building, another timer. My legs gave out and i slid down

00:04:58. The red numbers burned into my eyes. The cathedral had turned into hell in 10 seconds. Screams. Chair falling .A baby crying somewhere in the back. The priest dropped the bible, clutching his chest like he was having a heart attack. And through it all, cameras. Dozens of them. Live-streaming the moment “the broken wife” chose between her husband and her lover. In all these, David didn't move an inch. His hand was still locked around mine. The whole building was surrounded by the FBI. And he was smiling at me. Like this was exactly what he wanted. “Get your hands off her,” an FBI agent yelled, shoving between us with a gun pointing at David.David raised his cuffed hands in surrender, but he didn’t let go of my fingers right away. He squeezed it twice. “5 minutes, Sarah. That's all you have to save him." A code. Our old code. " I’m here. I’m not leaving you.”The same squeeze he gave me on our first wedding day. I wanted to vomit. David leaned in with his lips a

SARAH'S POVThe TV kept looping it. *DAVID BLACKHAM ESCAPES FROM PRISON. CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS.*Ethan was already shouting into his phone. “I want every exit sealed. Now.”My hands wouldn’t stop shaking, because 30 seconds ago my phone buzzed showing a photo. Ethan. Asleep in his own bed, bare chest, mouth open. And in the doorway behind him, a shadow of a man watching.“He was here,” I whispered. “Last night. While we were kissing downstairs.”Ethan threw his phone. “Call security!”But it was too late. The front door buzzer went off. Not the building. The penthouse door. The door bell rang. All of us froze. Ethan pulled a gun from his drawer, the two security guards drew theirs too.“Who is it?” Ethan yelled toward the door.A voice muffled through the wood sounding calm and familiar. “Delivery for Ms. Miller.”It wasn’t a delivery. Ethan motioned to the guard. The guard looked through the peephole. Then he shook his head. “No one there.”Ethan opened the door anyw

  • MY EX-HUSBAND REGRETS    You Used Me

The photo wasn’t me. But it looked like me. Same coat. Same hair. Same slump on the courthouse steps. Except my eyes were closed. And there was blood on my shirt. “BREAKING: SARAH MILLER COLLAPSES OUTSIDE COURTHOUSE. RUSHED TO HOSPITAL. PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS SUSPECTED.”The comments were already there. “See? She’s hiding it.”“Poor babies.” “David deserves to know.” I was sitting in Ethan’s car. Alive. Breathing. 4 hours from the hearing. And the whole internet thought I was in the ER losing twins. “Who took that?” Ethan said. His voice was low and Angered.“David,” I said. “Has to be. No one else benefits.”Ethan threw the phone in the backseat. “We’re going in early. We’re going to the judge’s chambers. Now.”“Will that help?” I asked. “It’ll help if we do it before they arrest you for faking a collapse,” Ethan said. I laughed like a sob. Then we drove. People were looking at their phones and then at me. Whispering. When we got to the courthouse, reporters were already

I stared at the text until the words stopped making sense. “48 hours, Sarah. Come to the hearing and admit it’s mine. Or I release the sonogram of the twins.”Twins. David was in prison. In cuffs. And he was still doing this. Ethan’s arms were still around me from five seconds. I pulled back. “I need air,” I said. “Sarah—” “I need air.” I walked to the window of his penthouse. 40 floors up, the night looked like a field of stars. None of them felt like mine. My phone buzzed again. Ms. Reyes. Then the board. Then a reporter. Then my dad’s old lawyer. I silenced all of it. Ethan came up behind me but didn’t touch me. “We’ll fight it,” he said. “The sonogram is fake. We can prove it.”“How?” I said. My voice sounded flat. Even to me. “He used my name. My insurance. A real hospital. Someone on the inside took his money and now I look like a liar who’s trying to hide her pregnancy.”“It’s not your fault,” Ethan said. “It is,” I said. “Because I married him. Because I was stupid

I didn’t sleep. I tried, but it wasn't forthcoming. I laid in Ethan’s guest bed for 4 hours staring at the ceiling. Counting the cracks. Counting my breaths. Counting all the ways David could still get to me. The note was still in my bag. “You think it’s over? It’s just starting.” -DAnd the photo. Me asleep in bed. while I was at the hospital with Nina. He was in my apartment. He knew where I slept. He knew when I was gone. At 3:17 AM I gave up. I walked out to Ethan’s living room. It was all glass and cold light. The city below looked peaceful. Like none of this was happening. Ethan was already there. On the couch, shirt off. Laptop open. He looked up when he heard me. “Couldn’t sleep?”“Obviously,” I said. I pulled his blanket around me and sat on the other end of the couch. Not too close. “You want tea? Water? To burn something down?” he asked. I almost smiled. “Water.”He got up and came back with two glasses. Handed me one. His fingers brushed mine. “You’re shaking,
