FAZER LOGINMidnight.
The clinic looked abandoned.
Paint peeling off the brick. One flickering light over the door. Weeds growing through the cracks in the parking lot.
"This is a bad idea," Ethan said. He had one hand on the steering wheel, the other on the gun in his lap. "We should call the police."
"We can't," I said. "She said come alone. If cops show up, she runs."
"And if David is waiting inside?"
"Then we run faster."
Ethan stared at me. Then he sighed. "Fine. But I'm parking across the street. And if you're not out in 5 minutes, I'm coming in. With the gun."
I nodded. My heart was hammering so hard I could hear it.
I got out. The air was cold. It smelled like rain and trash.
The door to the clinic was unlocked.
Inside was worse. Fluorescent lights buzzing. Chairs stacked in the corner. The smell of antiseptic and dust.
"Hello?" I said. My voice echoed.
Footsteps.
A woman stepped out from behind the front desk.
Late 40s. Grey hair in a ponytail. Scrubs under a worn coat. She looked tired. Like she hadn't slept in years.
"You came," she said.
"You're the nurse?" I said.
She nodded. "Nina Patel. I was on shift the night you came in. 2023."
I wrapped my arms around myself. "You said you have proof."
"I do," Nina said. "But not here. David has people watching this place. We need to go."
"Go where?"
"My apartment. It's safer."
Ethan was going to lose his mind.
I looked at her. She didn't look like someone working for David. She looked scared.
"Okay," I said. "Lead the way."
We drove in silence. Nina in the back of Ethan's car. Me in the passenger seat. Ethan driving like we were being followed.
Which we probably were.
Nina's apartment was small. Clean. Books stacked everywhere. Photos on the fridge of kids I assumed were hers.
She locked the door. Checked the windows. Then pulled a box out from under her bed.
Inside: files. USB drives. A voice recorder.
"I kept copies," Nina said. "Because I knew. I knew what he did was wrong."
She handed me a file.
“PATIENT: SARAH MILLER. DOB: 04/12/1996. ADMITTED: 06/14/2023.”
My hands were shaking.
The first page was the ER report.
“Patient arrived unconscious. Multiple stab wounds to abdomen. Blood loss severe. Emergency surgery required.”
Stab wounds.
David told everyone it was one. An accident.
"He stabbed you three times," Nina said quietly. "In the kitchen. Then he called 911 and said you fell on a knife."
I couldn't breathe.
"Keep reading," Nina said.
Page 2. Surgery notes.
" Patient stabilized. Internal bleeding controlled. Lacerations repaired. Patient will require extended recovery and psychological evaluation due to trauma."
Psych evaluation.
Because I wasn't just hurt. I was terrified.
"Page 3," Nina said.
I flipped to it.
A note, handwritten.
“Mr. Blackham requested all files be transferred to a private server. Requested deletion of ER intake photos. Offered $50,000 for cooperation. - Dr. H”
Dr. H. Also known as Dr. Harold. The one who testified in court that I was "unstable" and "prone to self-harm."
"He paid them," I whispered.
"Everyone," Nina said. "The ER doctor. The surgeon. The admin who filed the report. He paid them all."
I dropped the file.
"Why?" I said. "Why would he do that?"
Nina sat down across from me. "Because you were going to leave him. You told him that night. You packed a bag. You said you had proof he was embezzling from Miller Tech."
The room spun.
"I... I don't remember that."
"You were drugged," Nina said. "After surgery. He had them keep you sedated for 2 weeks. Said it was for pain. It wasn't. It was so you wouldn't talk. So you wouldn't remember."
Ethan was standing by the door.
"And the audio?" he said.
Nina held up the recorder. "This. Night 3. I was checking your vitals. You were half awake. He came in."
She hit play.
My voice sounding weak.
"David? What happened?"
David's voice. Sounding close.
"Shh. You had an accident, baby. You fell."
"No... I remember... the knife..."
"You’re confused. The drugs. Don’t talk. Just rest."
Then a rustling.
"Sign this," David said.
"What is it?"
"A statement. Saying it was an accident. For the insurance."
"I... I don't..."
"Sign it, Sarah. Or I’ll make sure your parents never get another dime from Miller Tech."
Then a pen signing.
The recording ended.
I was crying. I didn't even realize it.
"He forced me," I said. "He made me sign that I did it to myself."
"Yes," Nina said. "And that document is what the police used to close the case."
Ethan took the recorder. His expression was murder.
"We have enough to put him away for 20 years," he said. "Attempted murder. Obstruction. Bribery."
"But we need more," Nina said. "Because David will say this is fake. That I’m lying. That you paid me."
"Then what do we need?" I said.
Nina opened the last folder.
Inside was a photo.
Me. On the hospital bed. Tubes everywhere. Eyes closed.
And standing next to me.
David.
Holding a knife.
Not the one from the kitchen. A different one. Surgical.
And he was smiling.
"How did you get this?" Ethan said.
"Security camera in the room," Nina said. “The hospital installed them after a patient went missing last year. He thought he turned it off. He didn’t."
I stared at the photo. At my own pale face. At him.
This was it.
This was proof.
"Give it to me," I said. "All of it. The files. The audio. The photo."
Nina handed me the box. "Take it. But Sarah? He’s going to kill you if he finds out you have this."
"I know," I said.
We didn’t sleep that night.
By 6 AM, Ms. Reyes had everything. She was on the phone with the FBI.
"This is federal," she said. "Wire fraud. Obstruction. Attempted murder across state lines. They’ll pick him up today."
I sat on the hotel floor, surrounded by copies.
Ethan sat next to me.
"You okay?" he said.
"No," I said. "But I will be."
He reached over and took my hand.
For a second, it felt normal. Like we were just two people. Not a CEO and his fake fiance. Not victims and monsters.
Just us.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Sarah."
David.
My blood went cold.
"How did you get this number?"
"I have people everywhere," he said. His voice was calm. "I heard you had a visitor last night. Nurse Patel."
Ethan sat up.
"Don’t hurt her," I said.
"I’m not going to hurt her," David said. "I’m going to hurt you."
"What do you want?"
"I want what’s mine," David said. "Miller Tech. You. And if I can’t have you, no one can."
There was a noise in the background. A door opening.
Then a woman screamed.
Nina.
"David, what did you do?" I said.
"I didn’t do anything," David said. "Yet. But she’s in my car now. And if you want her to live, you’ll come to me. Alone. Tonight. 11 PM. The old Miller warehouse."
"Don’t," Ethan said, grabbing the phone. "This is Ethan. You touch her and I swear—"
David laughed. "You? You’re the one who put her in danger, Blackwood. 11 PM. Alone. Or I start sending you pieces of her."
He hung up.
The room was silent.
"He has her," I said.
"I know," Ethan said.
"What do we do?"
Ethan stood. "We go. But not alone. And not unarmed."
"Ms. Reyes said the FBI—"
"Won’t get there in time," Ethan said. "David’s done waiting. This ends tonight."
I stood too. My legs were shaking.
"Okay," I said. "Let’s end it."
11 PM.
The Miller warehouse.
It’s where my dad built his first product. Where I learned to solder circuits when I was 10.
Now it was dark. Empty.
Ethan parked a block away. FBI and SWAT were on standby.
"You stay in the car until I say," Ethan said.
"Like hell," I said. "It’s my company. My ex. My mess."
Ethan looked at me. Then nodded. "Fine. Stay behind me."
We walked in.
David was standing in the middle of the floor.
And in front of him, on her knees, hands tied.
Nina.
Gag in her mouth. Tears on her face.
David had a gun. Pointed at her head.
"Took you long enough," he said.
"Let her go," I said.
"Make me," David said.
Ethan stepped forward. "It’s over, Blackham. The FBI has everything. The video. The audio. The photo. You’re going to prison."
David smiled. "Maybe. But I’m not going alone."
He cocked the gun.
"Last chance, Sarah," he said. "Come with me. We can disappear. Start over. Or she dies. And then you."
I looked at Nina. At Ethan. At David.
All of this. All of it started because of him.
And it was going to end because of me.
"I choose," I said.
David tilted his head. "Choose what?"
"I choose," I said, louder.
The doors behind us burst open.
"POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON!"
David turned.
And in that second, Ethan quickly moved.
A shot rang out.
The tablet in Ethan’s kitchen was beeping right in front of me. And under it, a new timer. Red. Counting down from five minutes.00:05:00.But the beeping wasn’t coming from the tablet. It was coming from below. My blood went so cold that I couldn’t feel my hands anymore. The penthouse was empty. No bomb. No Ethan. Just me, in a ruined white dress, standing in the middle of his living room while a new countdown started somewhere I couldn’t see. My phone buzzed. Unknown number. “You picked the wrong door, wife. Good thing I like second chances.” I threw the phone, it hit the wall and cracked. I didn’t care. “Ethan!” My voice ripped out of me. “Ethan!” No response . Just the beeping sound, non stop. Steady from somewhere down. I ran to the balcony doors and pushed them open. The city air hit me, sharp and cold. Lights everywhere, and 8 floors down, traffic, people moving about. And somewhere in this building, another timer. My legs gave out and i slid down
00:04:58. The red numbers burned into my eyes. The cathedral had turned into hell in 10 seconds. Screams. Chair falling .A baby crying somewhere in the back. The priest dropped the bible, clutching his chest like he was having a heart attack. And through it all, cameras. Dozens of them. Live-streaming the moment “the broken wife” chose between her husband and her lover. In all these, David didn't move an inch. His hand was still locked around mine. The whole building was surrounded by the FBI. And he was smiling at me. Like this was exactly what he wanted. “Get your hands off her,” an FBI agent yelled, shoving between us with a gun pointing at David.David raised his cuffed hands in surrender, but he didn’t let go of my fingers right away. He squeezed it twice. “5 minutes, Sarah. That's all you have to save him." A code. Our old code. " I’m here. I’m not leaving you.”The same squeeze he gave me on our first wedding day. I wanted to vomit. David leaned in with his lips a
SARAH'S POVThe TV kept looping it. *DAVID BLACKHAM ESCAPES FROM PRISON. CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS.*Ethan was already shouting into his phone. “I want every exit sealed. Now.”My hands wouldn’t stop shaking, because 30 seconds ago my phone buzzed showing a photo. Ethan. Asleep in his own bed, bare chest, mouth open. And in the doorway behind him, a shadow of a man watching.“He was here,” I whispered. “Last night. While we were kissing downstairs.”Ethan threw his phone. “Call security!”But it was too late. The front door buzzer went off. Not the building. The penthouse door. The door bell rang. All of us froze. Ethan pulled a gun from his drawer, the two security guards drew theirs too.“Who is it?” Ethan yelled toward the door.A voice muffled through the wood sounding calm and familiar. “Delivery for Ms. Miller.”It wasn’t a delivery. Ethan motioned to the guard. The guard looked through the peephole. Then he shook his head. “No one there.”Ethan opened the door anyw
The photo wasn’t me. But it looked like me. Same coat. Same hair. Same slump on the courthouse steps. Except my eyes were closed. And there was blood on my shirt. “BREAKING: SARAH MILLER COLLAPSES OUTSIDE COURTHOUSE. RUSHED TO HOSPITAL. PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS SUSPECTED.”The comments were already there. “See? She’s hiding it.”“Poor babies.” “David deserves to know.” I was sitting in Ethan’s car. Alive. Breathing. 4 hours from the hearing. And the whole internet thought I was in the ER losing twins. “Who took that?” Ethan said. His voice was low and Angered.“David,” I said. “Has to be. No one else benefits.”Ethan threw the phone in the backseat. “We’re going in early. We’re going to the judge’s chambers. Now.”“Will that help?” I asked. “It’ll help if we do it before they arrest you for faking a collapse,” Ethan said. I laughed like a sob. Then we drove. People were looking at their phones and then at me. Whispering. When we got to the courthouse, reporters were already
I stared at the text until the words stopped making sense. “48 hours, Sarah. Come to the hearing and admit it’s mine. Or I release the sonogram of the twins.”Twins. David was in prison. In cuffs. And he was still doing this. Ethan’s arms were still around me from five seconds. I pulled back. “I need air,” I said. “Sarah—” “I need air.” I walked to the window of his penthouse. 40 floors up, the night looked like a field of stars. None of them felt like mine. My phone buzzed again. Ms. Reyes. Then the board. Then a reporter. Then my dad’s old lawyer. I silenced all of it. Ethan came up behind me but didn’t touch me. “We’ll fight it,” he said. “The sonogram is fake. We can prove it.”“How?” I said. My voice sounded flat. Even to me. “He used my name. My insurance. A real hospital. Someone on the inside took his money and now I look like a liar who’s trying to hide her pregnancy.”“It’s not your fault,” Ethan said. “It is,” I said. “Because I married him. Because I was stupid
I didn’t sleep. I tried, but it wasn't forthcoming. I laid in Ethan’s guest bed for 4 hours staring at the ceiling. Counting the cracks. Counting my breaths. Counting all the ways David could still get to me. The note was still in my bag. “You think it’s over? It’s just starting.” -DAnd the photo. Me asleep in bed. while I was at the hospital with Nina. He was in my apartment. He knew where I slept. He knew when I was gone. At 3:17 AM I gave up. I walked out to Ethan’s living room. It was all glass and cold light. The city below looked peaceful. Like none of this was happening. Ethan was already there. On the couch, shirt off. Laptop open. He looked up when he heard me. “Couldn’t sleep?”“Obviously,” I said. I pulled his blanket around me and sat on the other end of the couch. Not too close. “You want tea? Water? To burn something down?” he asked. I almost smiled. “Water.”He got up and came back with two glasses. Handed me one. His fingers brushed mine. “You’re shaking,
