I stared at the text until the words stopped making sense.

“48 hours, Sarah. Come to the hearing and admit it’s mine. Or I release the sonogram of the twins.”

Twins.

David was in prison. In cuffs. And he was still doing this.

Ethan’s arms were still around me from five seconds. I pulled back.

“I need air,” I said.

“Sarah—”

“I need air.”

I walked to the window of his penthouse. 40 floors up, the night looked like a field of stars. None of them felt like mine.

My phone buzzed again.

Ms. Reyes. Then the board. Then a reporter. Then my dad’s old lawyer.

I silenced all of it.

Ethan came up behind me but didn’t touch me. “We’ll fight it,” he said. “The sonogram is fake. We can prove it.”

“How?” I said. My voice sounded flat. Even to me. “He used my name. My insurance. A real hospital. Someone on the inside took his money and now I look like a liar who’s trying to hide her pregnancy.”

“It’s not your fault,” Ethan said.

“It is,” I said. “Because I married him. Because I was stupid enough to think he loved me.”

I turned around. “48 hours. That’s what he gave me.”

“Then we use them.”

We didn’t go to bed.

Ethan called Ms. Reyes. She was already pulling hospital records.

“I need every person who accessed Sarah Miller’s file in the last 3 months,” she said. “I need security footage. I need to know who David paid.”

I sat on the floor of Ethan’s living room with a blanket around me and a laptop on my knees.

I was googling “how to prove a sonogram is fake.”

The answers were terrible. “Hire a forensic radiologist.” “Get the original DICOM files.” “Subpoena the machine.”

I didn’t have time for any of that.

Ethan sat next to me. He had coffee but he didn’t drink it.

“You should sleep,” he said.

“If I sleep, I’ll dream about him,” I said. “About the knife. About Nina in the warehouse.”

Ethan took the laptop from me. Closed it. “Then don’t sleep. Talk to me.”

I laughed. “About what? About how I might lose my company because my ex-husband said I’m pregnant?”

“About anything,” Ethan said. “About when you were ten. About your dad. About why you built S.M. Collections in the first place.”

I looked at him. “Why?”

“Because I want to know you,” he said. “The real you. Not the one David made up in court.”

I pulled the blanket tighter. “My dad taught me to sew when I was nine. He said if I could make something with my hands, no one could ever take it from me.”

Ethan nodded. “He was right.”

Morning came and it didn’t feel like morning.

Ms. Reyes called back. “I have a name. Nurse Amina Bello. She was on shift 3 weeks ago. She accessed your file at 2:14 AM. No appointment was scheduled.”

“Can we talk to her?” I asked.

“She’s missing,” Ms. Reyes said. “She hasn’t been to work in 4 days. Her apartment is empty.”

Of course she was.

David was good at making people disappear.

Ethan was already on his feet. “We’re going to the hospital.”

“You can’t,” Ms. Reyes said. “If you show up, David’s lawyers will say you’re harassing witnesses.”

“Then we don’t show up as us,” Ethan said. He looked at me. “We show up as someone else.”

Two hours later I had brown hair. Glasses. A nurse’s scrubs that were two sizes too big.

Ethan was in a doctor’s coat with a fake ID that said Dr. Collins.

“We’re here for an audit,” he said to the receptionist. “Patient privacy breach.”

The receptionist barely looked up. “Records are in the back.”

We walked past 6 cameras. Past nurses who knew me. My heart was in my throat.

The records room was small and cold.

Ethan closed the door. “Look for anything with David’s name. Or payments. Or access logs.”

I started pulling files. My hands were shaking.

There.

Sarah Miller.

DOB: mine.

Insurance: David Blackham.

Procedure: Prenatal visit.

Doctor: Dr. K. Okoro.

Time: 2:30 AM.

But I was with Ethan that night at the gala. There were 200 witnesses.

“Found it,” I whispered.

Ethan came over. He took a photo. Then another.

“That’s not all,” he said. He pulled another folder.

Twins.

8 weeks.

Due date: 5 months from now.

It had my name on it.

I felt sick. “I’m going to throw up.”

“Not here,” Ethan said. He grabbed my arm. “We need to go.”

We were halfway to the door when it opened.

Dr. K. Okoro.

He stopped when he saw us.

“Who are you?” he said.

Ethan didn’t blink. “Audit. Like I said.”

Dr. Okoro’s eyes narrowed. “I wasn’t notified of an audit.”

Ethan smiled. “It was last minute. Hospital policy.”

Dr. Okoro looked at me. He really looked at me.

And I knew he recognized me.

“Sarah Miller,” he said.

Run.

That was my only thought.

Ethan grabbed my hand and we ran.

Behind us, Dr. Okoro was yelling for security.

We made it to the stairwell. Out the back exit into Ethan’s car.

He quickly drove out as two guards came around the corner.

In the car, I was shaking so bad my teeth chattered.

“He knows,” I said. “He knows it’s fake and he’s going to lie anyway.”

Ethan reached over and took my hand. “Then we get him on video saying it.”

We couldn’t go to the police. Not yet. Not without proof.

So we did something stupid.

Ethan called David’s lawyer.

“Miss Sarah would like to speak with Mr. Blackham,” Ethan said. “Regarding the upcoming hearing.”

“Put him on,” Ethan said.

The line clicked.

“Sarah,” David said. He sounded like he was smiling. “You look good in scrubs.”

My blood went cold. “You were watching.”

“Always,” David said. “Did you like the sonogram? I paid extra for twins. Thought you’d like that.”

“I’m not pregnant,” I said.

“You will be,” David said. “By the time the court is done, everyone will believe you are. And then Miller Tech is mine. And you’ll have to come back to me.to see your own company.”

“You’re sick,” I said.

“I’m in love,” David said. “There’s a difference.”

Ethan took the phone. “This call is being recorded, Blackham. Anything you say can be used—”

“Good,” David said. “Then let the record show that Sarah Miller is pregnant with my children and she’s trying to hide it because she’s ashamed. See you in court.”

He hung up.

Ethan threw the phone on the seat. “He wants us to record him. He’s baiting us.”

I put my head in my hands. “What do we do?”

Ethan was quiet for a long time.

Then: “We beat him at his own game.”

We went live again.

This time not from Blackwood Tower. From a small clinic across town.

No PR team. No lights. Just me, Ethan, and Dr. Amaka, a real OBGYN who agreed to help.

“I am Sarah Miller,” I said to the camera. “And I am not pregnant.”

Dr. Amaka held up the ultrasound machine. “This is a real-time scan. Live. No edits.”

She put the gel on my stomach.

“See?” Dr. Amaka said. “No fetus. No pregnancy. Nothing.”

The comments exploded.

“SHE’S LYING”

“DAVID HAS PROOF”

Then someone donated $10,000 and wrote: Where are the twins?

My stomach dropped.

Ethan saw it too.

He leaned into the mic. “We have proof the sonogram was forged. We have proof David paid a nurse to access Sarah’s files. And we will present it in court in 30 hours.”

The stream cut.

My phone rang immediately.

Ms. Reyes. “The board saw it. They’re delaying the vote. But Sarah, David’s team just filed for emergency custody. They’re saying you’re an unfit mother who’s hiding a pregnancy.”

I laughed. Even though It wasn’t funny.

“I’m not a mother.”

“I know,” Ms. Reyes said. “But the court doesn’t yet.”

Halfway there.

I hadn’t eaten. I hadn’t slept.

Ethan made me soup anyway. I drank half.

We were in his office going over every document we had.

The photo of David in the hospital.

The video of him threatening me.

The fake medical records.

It wasn’t enough.

“We need the nurse,” I said. “Amina. If we find her, she can testify.”

Ethan nodded. “My team is looking. So is the FBI.”

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photo.

Amina. She was tied to a chair in a basement. Eyes closed.

Under it: “24 hours left.” -D

“He has her,” I whispered.

Ethan took the phone. “We can trace this.”

“Can we?” I said. “Before he kills her?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

We found her.

An abandoned building on the east side.

FBI was already there.

Amina was alive. Barely. Dehydrated and bruised.

“She kept saying ‘don’t let him win,’” one of the agents told me. “Over and over.”

I sat with her in the ambulance. Held her hand.

“I’m so sorry,” I said. “This is my fault.”

Amina opened her eyes. “No,” she whispered. “It’s his. Tell them. Tell them he paid me $50,000. Tell them he told me to lie.”

“I will,” I said.

She squeezed my hand. “You’re not pregnant. Okay? You’re not.”

I nodded. Crying.

12 hours until the hearing.

We had Amina’s statement. We had the hospital footage. We had everything.

Ethan and I were in his car outside the courthouse.

“You don’t have to do this alone,” he said.

“I know,” I said.

“Are you scared?” he asked.

“Terrified,” I said. “Of losing. Of him winning. Of people believing him.”

Ethan reached over and brushed my hair back. “Then let them believe. And then we show them the truth.”

I leaned into his hand. “What if it’s not enough?”

“It will be,” Ethan said.

My phone buzzed.

David.

From prison.

A video call.

I answered.

He was sitting in a room. Orange jumpsuit. Smiling.

“Hi Sarah,” he said. “How’s my baby?”

“I’m not pregnant,” I said.

David tilted his head. “That’s what you think. But the court has the sonogram. The court has the records. The court has me.”

He leaned forward. “Last chance, Sarah. Say it’s mine. In court. Say you love me. Say it was a mistake. And I’ll make sure you keep Miller Tech. As my wife.”

“And if I don’t?” I said.

David smiled. “Then I release the other sonogram. The one with the complications. The one that says you’ll lose the babies if you’re stressed. And I’ll tell the judge it’s your fault.”

He hung up.

Ethan was watching me.

“What did he say?”

I couldn’t speak.

Because for the first time, I wasn’t sure if I could walk into that courtroom.

Because what if they believed him?

What if I lost everything because of a lie?

Ethan took my hand. “Sarah. Look at me.”

I did.

“You are not pregnant,” he said. “And I will spend the rest of my life making sure everyone knows it.”

I nodded.

But my phone lit up again.

A news alert.

“BREAKING: SARAH MILLER COLLAPSES OUTSIDE COURTHOUSE. RUSHED TO HOSPITAL. PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS SUSPECTED.”

And under it.

A photo of me on the ground, outside the courthouse.

I wasn’t there.

00:04:58. The red numbers burned into my eyes. The cathedral had turned into hell in 10 seconds. Screams. Chair falling .A baby crying somewhere in the back. The priest dropped the bible, clutching his chest like he was having a heart attack. And through it all, cameras. Dozens of them. Live-streaming the moment “the broken wife” chose between her husband and her lover. In all these, David didn't move an inch. His hand was still locked around mine. The whole building was surrounded by the FBI. And he was smiling at me. Like this was exactly what he wanted. “Get your hands off her,” an FBI agent yelled, shoving between us with a gun pointing at David.David raised his cuffed hands in surrender, but he didn’t let go of my fingers right away. He squeezed it twice. “5 minutes, Sarah. That's all you have to save him." A code. Our old code. " I’m here. I’m not leaving you.”The same squeeze he gave me on our first wedding day. I wanted to vomit. David leaned in with his lips a

SARAH'S POVThe TV kept looping it. *DAVID BLACKHAM ESCAPES FROM PRISON. CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS.*Ethan was already shouting into his phone. “I want every exit sealed. Now.”My hands wouldn’t stop shaking, because 30 seconds ago my phone buzzed showing a photo. Ethan. Asleep in his own bed, bare chest, mouth open. And in the doorway behind him, a shadow of a man watching.“He was here,” I whispered. “Last night. While we were kissing downstairs.”Ethan threw his phone. “Call security!”But it was too late. The front door buzzer went off. Not the building. The penthouse door. The door bell rang. All of us froze. Ethan pulled a gun from his drawer, the two security guards drew theirs too.“Who is it?” Ethan yelled toward the door.A voice muffled through the wood sounding calm and familiar. “Delivery for Ms. Miller.”It wasn’t a delivery. Ethan motioned to the guard. The guard looked through the peephole. Then he shook his head. “No one there.”Ethan opened the door anyw

She’s hiding it.”“Poor babies.” “David deserves to know.” I was sitting in Ethan’s car. Alive. Breathing. 4 hours from the hearing. And the whole internet thought I was in the ER losing twins. “Who took that?” Ethan said. His voice was low and Angered.“David,” I said. “Has to be. No one else benefits.”Ethan threw the phone in the backseat. “We’re going in early. We’re going to the judge’s chambers. Now.”“Will that help?” I asked. “It’ll help if we do it before they arrest you for faking a collapse,” Ethan said. I laughed like a sob. Then we drove. People were looking at their phones and then at me. Whispering. When we got to the courthouse, reporters were already

I didn’t sleep. I tried, but it wasn't forthcoming. I laid in Ethan’s guest bed for 4 hours staring at the ceiling. Counting the cracks. Counting my breaths. Counting all the ways David could still get to me. The note was still in my bag. “You think it’s over? It’s just starting.” -DAnd the photo. Me asleep in bed. while I was at the hospital with Nina. He was in my apartment. He knew where I slept. He knew when I was gone. At 3:17 AM I gave up. I walked out to Ethan’s living room. It was all glass and cold light. The city below looked peaceful. Like none of this was happening. Ethan was already there. On the couch, shirt off. Laptop open. He looked up when he heard me. “Couldn’t sleep?”“Obviously,” I said. I pulled his blanket around me and sat on the other end of the couch. Not too close. “You want tea? Water? To burn something down?” he asked. I almost smiled. “Water.”He got up and came back with two glasses. Handed me one. His fingers brushed mine. “You’re shaking,

And 10 minutes. "Where is she?" I said. My voice came out cracked. "We’ll find her," Ethan said. He shoved me into the elevator and hit B3. The parking garage. "We have to." The elevator doors closed. For three seconds it was just us and the red numbers counting down. *9:55*"Did you see her?" I asked. "Did she look hurt?" "No," Ethan said. But his jaw was tight. I refreshed the link David sent but nothing showed. Just blank. "He cut the stream," I said. "Good," Ethan sa
