"The kind that will kill you to get to me."

The words settled over the room like a death sentence.

For a moment, all I could hear was the sound of my own breathing.

Kill me?

Three days ago, my biggest concern had been surviving my eighteenth birthday party without being forced to dance with Ethan Blackwood.

Now, apparently, I was being hunted by a mysterious Council because my father's driver happened to be the heir to a dead kingdom.

Wonderful.

"You're joking."

Neither of them laughed.

I looked from my father to Alexander and back again.

"Oh my God. You're serious."

Alexander's expression remained unreadable, but there was something in his eyes I'd never seen before.

Regret.

"I never wanted this for you."

"That's comforting," I replied weakly. "Unfortunately, it appears fate disagrees."

"Amelia—"

"No." I held up a hand. "I'm trying very hard not to panic right now, so I'd appreciate a moment."

To my surprise, Alexander actually nodded.

My father, however, looked ready to argue.

"There isn't time."

"There is absolutely time," I snapped. "I've spent eighteen years believing my life was normal. Forgive me if I need five minutes to process the fact that my mate is a secret prince with homicidal enemies."

A strange sound escaped Alexander's throat.

I turned toward him.

"Did you just laugh?"

"No."

"That was definitely a laugh."

"It wasn't."

"It absolutely was."

The corner of his mouth twitched.

"Your timing remains impressive."

My father looked between us in disbelief.

"Is this really the time?"

"No," Alexander and I answered simultaneously.

We both blinked.

"Oh, that's unsettling," I muttered.

For the briefest moment, his expression softened.

Then the memory of Lucien's words seemed to return to him.

The Council knows.

The warmth vanished instantly.

"We need to leave."

My father stiffened.

"No."

Alexander's gaze met his.

"Richard."

"I said no."

"You know I'm right."

"I spent ten years protecting her!"

"And I spent ten years keeping my enemies away from this house."

Silence.

My eyes widened.

"What do you mean?"

Neither man answered.

Again.

I was beginning to hate that.

"Can someone please explain why everyone keeps speaking in riddles?"

Alexander exhaled slowly.

"The Sterling Estate has never been random."

I frowned.

"What?"

He looked around my bedroom.

"The security system. The walls. The land itself."

Realization slowly dawned on my face.

"No."

"Your father built this estate on sacred territory."

I turned toward my father.

"You built our home on what?"

"It was the only place they couldn't find you."

My stomach dropped.

"Find me?"

"After the attack when you were eight, we realized someone wasn't simply targeting Alexander."

My blood ran cold.

"They were looking for me?"

My father said nothing.

He didn't have to.

"Oh, God."

"Your mother wanted to tell you," he admitted quietly. "I wouldn't let her."

"Why?"

"Because I wanted you to have a normal life."

I laughed bitterly.

"How's that working out for us?"

Nobody answered.

A knock suddenly echoed through the hallway.

Three sharp knocks.

Every muscle in Alexander's body immediately tensed.

"Who else is here?" he asked.

"No one."

The knocking came again.

Louder this time.

Then—

"Richard Sterling."

The voice was unfamiliar.

Deep.

Cold.

My father went pale.

"No."

Alexander's expression hardened.

"Who is that?"

My father's silence told us everything.

Another knock.

"Open the door."

"Who is it?" I whispered.

My father swallowed visibly.

"The Council."

The room fell silent.

My heart stopped.

"You're kidding."

"I wish I was."

Alexander was already moving.

"How many exits?"

"What?"

"How many exits does this room have?"

"One."

"That's unfortunate."

The knocking became pounding.

"Richard Sterling, by order of the Lunar Council, open this door immediately."

I stared at the door in horror.

"They found us already?"

Alexander's expression darkened.

"No."

"What?"

"They didn't find us."

The implication hit me immediately.

"They knew where to look."

Someone had betrayed us.

The realization seemed to strike my father at the same time because his face drained of all color.

"No..."

Another voice joined the first.

"Hand over the girl, and we'll allow the rest of you to live."

"Oh, that's reassuring," I said faintly.

"Amelia."

I looked at Alexander.

"When I tell you to run, don't argue."

I laughed nervously.

"You've met me, haven't you?"

"I'm serious."

"So am I. Running seems like an excellent idea."

To my surprise, he almost smiled.

The pounding on the door intensified.

"You have ten seconds."

Alexander turned to my father.

"Can I trust you?"

Richard Sterling looked at the man he'd spent ten years pretending to employ.

"With my life."

"Good."

The next few seconds happened so quickly I barely understood them.

Alexander stepped forward and placed his hand against the wall.

Golden light spread beneath his fingertips.

The entire room began to shake.

"What are you doing?"

"Creating an exit."

"Since when can you do that?"

He glanced over his shoulder.

"Since always."

The wall exploded outward.

I stared in disbelief.

"You can tear through walls?"

"Among other things."

"I hate that you waited ten years to mention that."

A small smile appeared on his face.

"I had my reasons."

The door behind us finally burst open.

Five men dressed in black entered the room.

Every single one of them had glowing eyes.

Well.

That couldn't be good.

"There he is," one of them said quietly.

Another looked directly at me.

"And the girl."

Alexander stepped in front of me.

"You'll leave now."

The tallest man laughed.

"Still giving orders like a king, I see."

"I wasn't asking."

The air suddenly became heavy.

I felt it immediately.

Power.

Raw and terrifying.

The men in black seemed to feel it too because their expressions changed instantly.

"Impossible."

"His power shouldn't have returned."

Returned?

Alexander ignored them.

"Take Richard and go," he said quietly.

"What?" I exclaimed.

"I'm not leaving you."

His eyes met mine.

"Amelia."

"No."

"This isn't a discussion."

"Good, because I wasn't discussing!"

Something flickered in his expression.

Then—

The tallest man smiled.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"The bond."

Every eye in the room turned toward us.

"It's already forming."

Alexander's expression darkened dangerously.

"Watch your next words carefully."

"Oh, I think I understand now."

The man laughed softly.

"The Alpha King has fallen in love."

The room went deathly silent.

I forgot how to breathe.

Alexander said nothing.

Which, somehow, was answer enough.

"Oh," the man continued. "This changes everything."

I looked at Alexander.

"You—"

"Now isn't the time."

"No, I think this is exactly the time!"

"We can discuss it later."

"Later?"

The ceiling suddenly cracked overhead.

Everyone froze.

The tallest man's smile vanished.

"That's impossible."

"What is?"

Then I heard it.

A howl.

Not one.

Hundreds.

The sound shook the entire estate.

The men in black immediately went pale.

"No."

Alexander closed his eyes briefly.

"What is happening?" I demanded.

His expression was unreadable when he opened them again.

"My people," he said quietly.

My heart skipped a beat.

"What?"

"They've come for their king."

And outside, beneath the full moon, the wolves began to howl his name.

For several seconds, neither Alexander nor I moved. The footprints remained on the stone floor.Three muddy impressions. Then another. Then another. They stopped directly behind me.I could feel Alexander's hand close around mine.“Don't turn around quickly,” he whispered. My heart hammered.“Why?”“Because if someone wants you frightened, they may be waiting for exactly that.”I swallowed. The room suddenly felt too small.I slowly turned.Nothing.Only the empty corridor beyond the doorway. The candle beside the bed flickered.“There's no one there,” I whispered.Alexander stepped past me.His eyes moved across every shadow.“Lucien!”His voice echoed through the corridor.Footsteps answered from the far end.Lucien appeared moments later with two guards behind him.“What happened?”Alexander pointed toward the floor.Lucien stared. His expression changed.“I saw those.”“Where?”“Outside the northern wall.”My stomach tightened.“The same footprints?”Lucien nodded.“But they stopp

The next morning, I woke with a name in my mouth.I did not know whose name it was.I only knew that when I whispered it, Alexander woke.“Amelia?”I sat upright. The room was still dark.My heart was beating too quickly.“What did you say?”I looked at him.“I don't know.”“You said a name.”“What name?”He studied me.“Elias.”The word meant nothing to me.Yet the moment he said it, my bracelet became warm. Not burning.Recognizing.I looked down. The black crescent had faded slightly. That frightened me more than its darkness had.“Do you know an Elias?”Alexander shook his head.“No.”“Are you sure?”“Yes.”I searched his face. There was no hesitation. For once, there was no hidden answer behind his eyes.Just confusion.A soft knock interrupted us.Sera entered. She stopped when she saw my bracelet.“It changed.”I nodded.“It happened when Alexander said a name.”“What name?”“Elias.”Sera went completely still.I noticed.“You know him.”She looked toward the doorway.“Not him.

  • MY FATHER'S DRIVER IS MY ALPHAMATE    CHAPTER EIGHTY FOUR: BEFORE THE TRUTH

The door disappeared, but the feeling it left behind did not.For the rest of the morning, I could feel that ancient heartbeat beneath Moonfang.Slow.Patient.Waiting.I tried to ignore it.I failed.By midday, Alexander found me sitting alone on the balcony outside the old library.I was staring at the mountains.“You've been here for an hour,” he said.I didn't turn around.“How do you know?”“I've been looking for you for forty minutes.”I smiled faintly.“So you were counting?”“I was worried.”I finally looked at him.He was standing in the doorway with two cups in his hands.“You brought tea.”“Peace offering.”“For what?”“For disappearing earlier.”I accepted the cup.“You apologized yesterday.”“I know.”“And today?”“Today I'm practicing.”I laughed softly. He sat beside me.For a while, neither of us spoke. The wind moved through my hair.Alexander reached over and gently tucked a strand behind my ear.“You're thinking about the door.”“Yes.”“About the voice?”“Yes.”“Abo

  • MY FATHER'S DRIVER IS MY ALPHAMATE    CHAPTER EIGHTY THREE: A DOOR THAT REMEMBERED

Morning came quietly to Moonfang.Too quietly.I woke before sunrise with the strange feeling that someone had been standing beside my bed.I opened my eyes. There was no one there.Only pale moonlight slipping through the curtains and Alexander asleep in the chair near the window. He had refused to leave my room after the bracelet burned the night before.Apparently, he had decided that sitting upright in a wooden chair for hours was an acceptable form of protection.I smiled despite myself.“You're terrible at sleeping,” I whispered. His eyes opened immediately.“I wasn't sleeping.”“You were.”“I was resting my eyes.”“While snoring?”His expression became offended.“I do not snore.”“You absolutely do.”He stared at me for a moment. Then a slow smile appeared.“You've been awake for thirty seconds, and you're already insulting me.”“I missed you.”His smile softened.“I was right here.”“I know.”I sat up.For a few peaceful seconds, neither of us mentioned the letter. The silence

  • MY FATHER'S DRIVER IS MY ALPHAMATE    CHAPTER EIGHTY TWO:THE THINGS WE DON'T SAY

I did not follow Alexander immediately. For several seconds, I stood beneath Moonfang's cold moonlight, watching his silhouette disappear beyond the stone archway. The letter was still in his hand. And somehow, that small piece of paper felt heavier than everything I had carried into this place. My fingers tightened around the bracelet on my wrist. The black crescent beneath the silver surface seemed darker than before. He is hiding something.I hated the whisper. Not because it frightened me.Because some part of me was afraid it might be telling the truth.I found Alexander in the old courtyard behind the eastern tower. He was standing beside a dry fountain, his back toward me.For a moment, I simply watched him.His shoulders were tense. His injured side was still slightly stiff from the attack in the forest, though he tried to hide it whenever I looked. That was Alexander. He could stand in front of an army without blinking. But when he was afraid for me, he became quieter.I step

We rode through the night.Nobody complained.Nobody asked to stop.Even the horses seemed to understand we couldn't afford to slow down.Alexander rode beside me, one hand pressed against the wound across his chest.Every few minutes, I looked at him.Every few minutes, he caught me looking."I'm fine," he said."You keep saying that.""Because it's true.""Then stop bleeding."He smiled."I'll see what I can do."I tried to smile back.I couldn't.Something had changed since the forest. The black mark on my bracelet remained.Small.Almost invisible. But I could feel it.Every heartbeat.Every breath. It reminded me that the first Alpha was still somewhere out there.Watching.Waiting.Near dawn, we stopped beside an abandoned stone house.Lucien inspected the area."Nothing."Alexander dismounted. His knees almost gave way.I caught him."You are not fine."He sighed."I suppose that's settled."I helped him inside. My mother followed."We need to clean that wound.""I can do it."
