Moises was unusually quiet. She leaned toward Jason. "What's wrong with him?" Jason shrugged. "Maybe he's hungry." Miyaka frowned. "Moises." No response. "Moises!" Still nothing. She waved her hand in front of his face. "Earth to Moises!" He finally looked at her. "What?" "You're weird today." "I'm fine." Jason suddenly grinned. "I know what's wrong." Miyaka turned toward him. "What?" Jason leaned closer. "Moises likes someone." Miyaka froze. "What?" Moises immediately looked embarrassed. "Jason!" "What? It's obvious." Miyaka stared at Moises. "Who?" "No one." "You're lying." "I'm not." "You're definitely lying." Jason laughed. "Tell her." Moises sighed. "There's a girl..." Miyaka felt something inside her drop. "A girl?" "Yes." "From where?" "Another section." "Oh." She forced herself to smile. "What's her name?" Moises told her. Miyaka knew the girl. She was pretty. Smart. Quiet. Everything Miyaka wasn't. "Oh," Miyaka repeated. Moises looked at her. "Will you help me?" Miyaka blinked. "Help you?" "Talk to her." She smiled. "Of course!" Jason looked at her suspiciously. "Are you sure?" "Yes!" She stood up dramatically. "I will make sure Moises gets his crush!" Moises laughed. "Thank you." Miyaka smiled back. But as she turned away, her smile slowly disappeared. Why does this hurt? She placed a hand over her chest. Why am I sad? Then the thought came. What if he really falls in love with her? She shook her head. "No." Jason noticed. "Miyaka?" "I'm fine." "You don't look fine." "I'm helping my best friend." "Yeah." Jason stared at her. "You are." He didn't say anything else. But Jason already knew. Miyaka wasn't helping Moises because she wanted him to be happy. She was helping him because she was afraid to admit what she truly wanted. She wanted him to choose her. At lunch, Miyaka sat across from Moises with a notebook open between them. She had written the girl's name at the top, followed by a list of suggestions. "First," she said, tapping the page, "you need to talk to her normally." Moises nodded seriously. "Okay." "Don't stare at her from across the room." "I don't do that." "You did it three times yesterday." Jason nearly choked on his drink. Miyaka continued, pretending not to notice. "And don't suddenly become someone you're not. Just be friendly." Moises looked nervous. "What if she doesn't like me?" "Then she doesn't know what she's missing." The words came out too quickly. Moises smiled, but Miyaka looked down at the notebook. She had meant them. She also wished someone would say them about her. After class, she spotted the girl near the library. Miyaka took a deep breath and pushed Moises forward. "Go." Moises glanced back. "You're coming with me, right?" "Of course." They walked toward the girl together. Miyaka introduced them, smiling brightly while Moises stumbled through his greeting. The girl laughed softly. She seemed kind. Miyaka watched as Moises relaxed, his eyes shining whenever the girl spoke. For a moment, Miyaka felt invisible. Then the girl turned to her. "You must be Miyaka. Moises talks about you all the time." Miyaka blinked. "He does?" "Yes. He says you're the person who understands him best." Moises turned red. Miyaka's heart fluttered, but she quickly pushed the feeling away. "He's exaggerating." The girl smiled. "I don't think he is." Miyaka looked at Moises. He was staring at her now. And suddenly, she wondered if she had misunderstood everything.
