Jane’s POV

I didn’t go to work the next day.

When my alarm finally went off, shrill and merciless, I didn’t even bother hitting snooze. I just shut the damn thing off, rolled over, and stared at the ceiling until the light leaking in through the blinds made my eyes sting.

I felt… hollow. Like all my strength had leaked out the moment I’d slammed that car door last night.

His face kept flashing in my mind… the way he’d reached for me, the way his phone had lit up with her name. The way it always came back to her. Jessica.

It didn’t matter how many times I told myself he wasn’t mine, that I’d been stupid to think otherwise. It still stung.

I picked up my phone, scrolled through my contacts until I found HR’s extension, and croaked out something about being sick. My voice sounded as awful as I felt, so they didn’t even question it.

I was halfway through pulling the blanket over my head when I heard knocking on the door.

“Jane?” Sarah’s voice floated through. “Open up, you hermit!”
