Jane’s POV

I walked into the office with a kind of quiet resolve, the kind that comes after too many nights of crying and telling yourself you won’t let it break you again.

Yesterday, I’d promised myself I was done letting Kennedy’s moods crush me. If he wanted distance, fine. If he wanted to treat me like some replaceable piece of furniture, fine. Maybe that was exactly what I needed to finally get over him.

So I straightened my shoulders, lifted my chin, and told myself that today, I wouldn’t give him the power to wound me.

I sat down, powered up my computer, and kept my eyes fixed on the screen. If he walked by, I wouldn’t look. If he called my name, I’d answer… but only with the professional calm I’d practiced in the mirror this morning.

No cracks, no slips, no trembling voice that gave away the storm inside me.

You can do this, Jane, I whispered in my head. He’s your boss. Nothing more. That’s all he gets to be.
