LOGINChapter 2.
NEW GIRLFRIEND IS AN INTERN.
JANE'S POV.
I rolled over on the soft layer of the covers of my bed and stretched my hand to my bedside table to pick up my phone to check the time I woke up like I always do every morning, but strangely, I couldn't feel my bedside table.
I almost fell out of bed.
That was not all, this morning, my bed felt wider than I knew it to be. It didn't feel right, and the headache that was hitting me like adrenaline was concerning.
I held my head and swallowed in my groan when my eyes opened and I beheld the unfamiliarity of the room I was in.
I forgot about my headache and jolted, "What happened? What am I doing here?" Were the questions I asked myself.
Last night... last night, I... "I what?"
I grabbed my head, "Oh god! I can't remember a shit!" I exclaimed, and my face turned up like I wanted to cry.
I didn't.
I slowly pulled the covers down from my body, and my shame came into view before my eyes. My nudity glared back at me, and then, I could tell what I did last night.
But with whom?
Gosh!
The blaring of my phone's ringtone distracted all my reasoning, and I hastily began to search for it. I saw it in my bag, which was neatly kept on the sofa beside the bed.
I picked up the call from Sarah, "Is the dick too enjoyable that you forgot it's a work day today?" That was the first question she asked me.
If only she knew.
"Wait for me at home, I'm coming," I replied to her instead of satisfying her sarcastic question.
"If you come here late, then, you won't meet me."
"I'll be there," I assured her and hung up.
I got out of bed with the covers on my body, and I ran to the bathroom in the room. I didn't think I spent up to a minute in the bathroom when I ran back to the room with a towel around my chest and I slipped my bitchy dress back on.
I picked up my bag and ran out of the room.
I got home and met Sarah, already dressed for work. She was waiting for me.
"What happened?" She asked me and followed me to my room.
"I woke up late," I replied to her.
I quickly stripped and picked out a pair of office shoes and pants, and I wore the outfit.
"That is not what I'm asking you, Jane. I mean, what happened last night?"
"Don't ask me about what you already know, Sarah. I'm tired."
She was silent, so I glanced at her to see her smirking with her hands folded together on her chest.
I groaned and concentrated on dressing up.
When I was done, we left the room together. She carried her bag from the sitting room, and we left the house.
We were late, so we had to use a cab to get to the company. Throughout the short journey to the company, Sarah kept on talking nonstop about her night, and she expected me to do the same, which I had no time to do.
I couldn't even remember who I spent the night with.
We alighted from the cab in front of the company, and Sarah paid the cab driver.
"Oh, there is something in our department group since last night that I know you haven't opened to check out," Sarah said to me as we entered the company to go to the ninth floor on the elevator.
"What's that?"
"Our HR manager retired and today, another person will be introduced to us as the new HR manager." She told me.
I didn't comment on what she told me, it was none of my business.
"Everyone had been talking about the new manager. They said he is a young guy, and very handsome. They also said he never smiles and he looks calm."
I nodded to that.
She nudged my arm, "Aren't you curious?"
"Why should I be? I know that I will only have to ignore the new manager like I did throughout the tenure of the old one, and see, I survived."
The elevator's door opened and we stepped into our work space for our department. Human Resources.
We had not taken up to five steps forward when we came face to face with Ben. He was not alone, he had a girl walking closely beside him, and I recognised her as the girl he was with yesterday.
I hesitated to take her in.
She did not look that beautiful, compared to me, though she took my boyfriend from me anyway.
Something on her caught my attention, the office tag around her neck.
'Is she an employee here too?' I wondered, but that was nothing to wonder long about. The writings on the tag were the same as those around Ben's neck. The only difference was that her tag was white, and Ben's own was brown.
That could only mean one thing —she was an intern in the company— but how could I have overlooked her all this time?
I decided to act mature like the bitch I want to become, I decided to ignore them.
I raised my shoulders in pride and took steps closer to them and walked by like I did not see them, but son of destruction would surely be destroyed no matter the number of warnings., and Ben was one.
He grabbed my arm and pulled me back. "Why are you pretending not to see us? I wanted to introduce you to my new girlfriend."
I smiled a toothless smile at him, "Oh, this is the toothpick you chose over me? Okay, I've seen her, can I go now?"
His face turned red.
I knew he wanted me to be angry and speak harshly at him, then he would be satisfied.
But no, I wouldn't be angry now. Tonight, I could be angry again and cry myself to sleep, but here? No.
"I know you're pained, you are only trying to hide your pain under that fake smile." He told me what I knew.
I dropped my smile and nodded at him, "Now, you know about that, can you let me go?"
Instead of letting go of my arm, he held tighter, pressing his nails into my skin.
"Ben, dammit!" I exclaimed and tried to jerk my hand off his grip, but he wouldn't let me go.
My pain was mixed with anger, and I raised my hand and connected my palm with his cheek.
I slapped him.
The slap resounded so much that my hand hurt, and I never knew it drew unnecessary attention to us.
"Take your damn self and girlfriend out of my face," I told him firmly, showing him I didn't care anymore about his life.
A voice suddenly spoke from behind me, and I sucked in a breath, "What is happening here? Why are you disrupting the company's peace, Miss Shane?"
Jane's POVThe next morning came and I found it hard to get out of bed.The bright sun was already entering my room through the curtains, it was too bright for the kind of mood I was in.I felt heavy, my eyes had gotten swollen from all the crying last night. I grabbed my blanket and wrapped it very tight around me. I wish I could stop the noise in the world, the gossiping people, and the shame.I could still remember the headlines of the news in my head. The more I thought about it the more I felt sick. How could something that felt real, something that filled me with happiness, become such a mess?My phone vibrated somewhere around where my blanket was. I didn't pay attention to it for the few times. It could be more hateful messages. Or more people pretending to care about me just to get more details from me.Then Sarah's voice came from the living room. “Jane? Are you still sleeping?”I didn't answer her. I couldn't say anything.“Come on babe,” Hannah said. “You have been inside
Kennedy's POVThe night felt unusually cold. I stood in front of Mr Shane's mansion. The bright light was shining out of the windows like a beautiful painting from the outside. It looked amazing.I adjusted my tie, breathed in and out but still I wasn't calm. I pressed the doorbell.A guard opened the door immediately. “Good evening, Mr Kennedy. Mr Shane is waiting for you in the dining room.”I walked down the hallway, the sound from my shoe echoing from the floor. The place had a pleasant smell of polished wood and expensive whiskey. My pulse became harder to control with every step I took towards the dining room.Mr Shane was already seated at the end of the long table, perfect composure, like he had been waiting here all night just for me. He wore a dark suit, everything was in place.“Have a seat,” He said, without looking up from his plate. There was no anger in his tone… but it felt heavy. It felt like he was waiting for the right moment to explode.I sat down on the seat oppos
Kennedy’s POVI didn’t knock.I just barged into Jessica’s office like a storm.“This is all your doing, isn’t it?” I shouted, slamming the door behind me. “You did this Jessica!”The walls of Jessica’s office shook with my voice.Jessica didn’t flinch. She was sitting behind her desk like she’d been waiting for me all morning. Her red lips curved into that half-smirk that always made my blood boil.“Nice to see you too, Kennedy,” she said coolly, crossing one leg over the other. “I was wondering how long it would take before you came storming in.”“Don’t play dumb with me,” I barked, stepping closer. “You leaked those pictures. You wanted this to happen.”Her smirk faded. “Oh, please. Don’t flatter yourself.”I slammed my palm on her desk, hard enough that a few pens rolled off. “You’re the only one who had something to gain from this.”Jessica’s eyes darkened. “Gain? You think this benefits me? You think I enjoy doing this? You think I'll want to hurt you?”“You’re capable of a lot
Jane’s POVWeeks went by.Slow at first. Then faster. The chaos, the pictures, the threats… all of it began to fade like a bad dream.Kennedy and I kept our distance just like he said. No more sneaking around in the office, no more car park meetings. No more sex. Just short calls, quiet texts at night. His messages were careful. Mine were too.And for the first time in a long time, it felt… calm.I wasn't getting weird notes.I wasn't receiving texts from unknown numbers. No more threats.I started to breathe again. I started to think maybe things were dying down.Even at work, people stopped staring. Stopped asking questions. It was almost normal.Or so I thought..Then, out of nowhere, everything shifted.I felt it first before I even knew why. the way people glanced at me, then looked away quickly. Two girls in the copy room whispered, their eyes sliding to me as I walked past.I tried to brush it off, but it grew. Everywhere I went that morning, I felt it. Murmurs. Quick looks. P
Jane’s POVI didn’t sleep much that night.Every time I closed my eyes, I felt him. His touch, his breath, the way he whispered my name. And then that picture… the message. It played over and over in my mind like a curse.By the time the sun came up, my pillow was still warm from where I’d been turning all night.Sarah had left early, and the apartment felt heavier than usual. My heart was still somewhere between wanting Kennedy and fearing what could become of us.When I finally got to the office, it was too quiet. The usual chatter didn’t reach my ears. Everyone seemed busy, heads down. I forced a breath, straightened my blouse, and tried to act normal.Whatever normal was anymore.Kennedy’s office door was half open. I slowed down without meaning to. He was there, leaning over his desk, tie slightly loose, sleeves rolled. The sight of him made my chest tighten. He looked up just then. Our eyes met.For a second, I thought maybe he’d smile, or nod… something. But he didn’t.His exp
Jane’s POVHis hand hadn’t left my thigh since the moment he started driving. “Where are we going?” I whispered finally, breaking the silence that had been sitting too heavily between us.Kennedy’s jaw ticked once, his eyes still on the road. “Somewhere safe.”That word made my stomach knot. Safe? From what? From who?“Safe?” I repeated, turning my head to look at him. “Safe from who?”He glanced at me briefly, then looked forward again. “Don’t worry about that now.”“Don’t worry?” I let out a half-laugh. “Kennedy, someone was watching us. How do you expect me to be calm…”“Jane.” His voice cut sharp, a whip against the thick air between us. “I said I’ll handle it.”I stared at him, my words drying up. The rest of the drive was thick with silence, broken only by the hum of the engine. When we finally slowed, I looked up to see a tall, glass-walled building rising above the city.Kennedy pulled into the underground garage, the guard at the gate instantly nodding and waving him throug
