Madison found me in the study an hour after breakfast, an envelope clutched in her hands and an expression of practiced reluctance carefully arranged on her face, the same look I remembered from seven years ago without quite placing why it suddenly felt so familiar.

"I didn't want to be the one to show you this," she said, setting the envelope on my desk like it weighed more than paper reasonably should. "But I think you deserve to know the truth, whatever it costs either of us."

I opened it warily, old instincts warring uncomfortably with newer ones I'd only recently allowed myself to trust. Inside was a printed record, an email exchange dated years ago, showing Olivia's name attached to correspondence with the investigation firm I'd hired to find her all those years back.

My stomach turned as I read it slowly, twice. According to the document, Olivia had responded to one of the investigator's attempts to contact her, explicitly asking them to stop searching entirely and never to tell me she'd been located, no matter what.

"Where did you get this?" I asked, my voice tighter than I wanted it to sound in front of her.

"It doesn't matter where," Madison said gently, her tone practiced and soft, the same tone she'd used on me countless times over the years whenever she needed me to stop asking questions. "What matters is that she knew you were looking for her, Ethan, and she chose to hide anyway, for years, letting you believe she simply didn't want to be found at all."

I studied the paper again, something nagging at the back of my mind that I couldn't quite name yet, a small wrongness I hadn't fully registered on the first read. The formatting looked correct, the letterhead matched what I remembered from the firm's old reports, but something about the whole thing felt slightly too convenient, arriving exactly when suspicion had begun to circle in Madison's own direction instead.

"You understand how this looks," I said slowly, watching her face for any crack in the composed sorrow she'd arranged there. "You bring me this exact piece of evidence the same week I start asking you pointed questions about my father's final days. That timing isn't lost on me, Madison."

"I brought it to you because I care about you," she said, her voice wavering just slightly, though whether from genuine emotion or simple performance I could no longer tell with any real confidence. "I know how this looks, but I promise you my intentions are only ever to protect this family from being hurt further."

I stared at the page, old anger and fresh betrayal rising together in a way that made my chest ache with something close to physical pain. I found Olivia in the garden less than ten minutes later, the paper crumpled slightly in my fist from how tightly I'd been gripping it.

"Explain this," I said, holding it out to her without preamble.

She read it, her face draining of color rapidly, confusion and hurt flashing across her features in quick, unmistakable succession. "This is fake, Ethan. I never saw this email in my life. I never wrote a single word of this."

"It has your name on it. Your old email address, the one you used before you left."

"I don't care what it has printed on it," she snapped, her hands trembling as she held the page closer to her face, scanning it again and again. "I never responded to any investigator, ever. I would have told you immediately if I had, the second you asked me about it directly."

I wanted to believe her completely. Some raw, exhausted part of me wanted to believe her more than I'd wanted anything in years, more than I'd wanted almost anything since finding out about Noah. But another part of me, the part that had been burned once already by trusting the wrong version of events for seven long years, held back instinctively, refusing to let go so easily this time.

"I need to verify this," I said carefully, watching her reaction closely.

"Verify it, then," Olivia said, her eyes blazing despite the hurt clearly written across her face. "But look at the date first, before you decide anything at all."

I looked. March, seven years ago, the same week the investigation firm's own records showed they'd first traced her to Los Angeles after months of dead ends.

"That's when they found me," Olivia said, pointing at the date with a shaking finger, her voice rising with something between fury and desperation. "I was seven months pregnant, living in a shelter with barely any belongings to my name, no computer, no consistent internet access anywhere nearby, no possible way to send an email like this even if I'd somehow wanted to send it."

I stared at the date, then at her, my mind racing to reconcile the timeline against everything else I now knew to be true. If she was right about this, if she truly had no access to send correspondence like that during that exact window of time, then the document Madison had handed me wasn't just questionable anymore.

It was manufactured, deliberately and carefully, by someone who understood exactly how much damage it could still do even now.

"Are you certain about the timeline?" I asked, my voice quieter now, some of the anger draining out of it as suspicion redirected itself entirely.

"I am certain," Olivia said, "because I remember every single detail of the worst months of my entire life, Ethan. And I know for an absolute fact I never touched a working computer during that particular week, not once."

I looked down at the page again, a cold clarity finally settling over me like ice water.

"Show me exactly where you were staying," I said quietly. "The shelter, the library, all of it. I want to see it for myself, if that's what it takes for me to be certain."

"Fine," Olivia said, some of the anger in her voice giving way to something closer to exhaustion. "I'll show you everything you want to see. But Ethan, I need you to understand something first. Every single time you doubt me, even for a moment, it costs me something I can't easily get back. I need you to be sure before you ask me to prove myself again."

"I am sure," I said, and found, somewhat to my own surprise, that I meant it completely. "I already believe you. I just need the proof to protect us both, in case anyone else tries something like this again."

Olivia studied my face for a long moment, searching for any trace of the old doubt that had once cost her everything, and whatever she found there seemed to satisfy her enough to nod slowly, some of the tension easing from her shoulders. "Then let's go now," she said. "Before either of us loses our nerve, and before Madison has time to wonder why we haven't already come back to confront her about it."

  • MY SECRET ALPHA HEIR    CHAPTER 50: THE RESCUE

The drive north felt endless, the detective's team coordinating in low, urgent voices over the radio while Olivia sat rigid beside me, her hands white-knuckled around each other in her lap. Neither of us spoke much, the silence heavy with everything we couldn't afford to think about too directly, not if we wanted to stay steady enough to actually help when the moment came.I kept glancing at her throughout the drive, at the fierce, unwavering focus holding her together, and found myself thinking, absurdly, of the first night I'd watched her play with Noah on Margaret's living room floor, the careful, guarded way she had let me in only inch by inch, and how far we had both come since then. I hoped, with an intensity that ached, that we would have the chance to come further still. We reached the perimeter of the property just before three in the morning, the lodge and the smaller building beside it barely visible through the trees under a sky heavy with clouds. Officers moved into posit

  • MY SECRET ALPHA HEIR    CHAPTER 49: THE HIDDEN ENEMY

I stared at the name on the page, my mind refusing at first to accept what my father had written there in his own careful hand. Not Madison. Not anyone we had already suspected.Grant Whitfield. The financial director who had disappeared years ago, the man whose sudden severance had first caught my attention, the man I had spent days trying and failing to find. He hadn't vanished because Desmond had silenced him.He had vanished because he was Desmond's partner, working alongside him this entire time."He's had access to the company's internal systems for years," I said, the pieces slotting into place with sickening speed. "Even after he officially left, if he kept backdoor credentials, he could have authorized everything. The board motion. The falsified evidence against me. All of it.""He would have known exactly how to make it look like you," Olivia said. "He worked inside this company long enough to understand every system, every vulnerability."I paced the length of the study, th

  • MY SECRET ALPHA HEIR    CHAPTER 48: VICTORIA'S CONFESSION

I sat in the back seat of Ethan's car as we drove toward the bank, my hands folded tightly in my lap, and finally allowed myself to say the words I had been avoiding for seven years."I need to tell you both something before we get there," I said. "Something I haven't fully admitted, even to myself, until tonight."Olivia turned in the passenger seat to look at me, her expression guarded but attentive. "What is it, Mother?""Fear and greed made me cooperate with people I should have opposed from the very beginning." My voice shook, but I forced myself to continue, unwilling to let the confession die unfinished the way so many of my half-truths had before. "I didn't directly plan anything that happened to you, Olivia. I want you to understand that clearly. But my silence, my choice to protect my own comfort instead of speaking up when I first suspected something was wrong, helped create the conditions that allowed all of this to happen and keep happening for years.""You've already tol

  • MY SECRET ALPHA HEIR    CHAPTER 47: THE SEVEN-YEAR CONSPIRACY

I sat with Madison's confession long after Ethan left the room, the full shape of what had actually happened seven years ago finally settling into place with a clarity that made my chest ache in an entirely new way.Madison's lies hadn't been born from simple jealousy. They had been a tool, deployed at precisely the right moment to distract William, to keep him occupied with a family scandal while Desmond Cole quietly bled the company dry from the shadows he'd been hiding in for over a decade. My disappearance, my pregnancy, my six years of struggling alone in Los Angeles, all of it had been collateral damage in a war I hadn't even known existed until now."He used me," I said quietly, mostly to myself, when Ethan found me still sitting in the study an hour later. "Desmond Cole destroyed my entire life, not because of anything I did, but because I was simply in the way of a distraction he needed.""I know." Ethan sat down across from me, his own exhaustion plain across his face. "My f

  • MY SECRET ALPHA HEIR    CHAPTER 46: MADISON CORNERED

"Ethan, I think whoever has your son has been planning this for far longer than either of us understood."I stared at Madison, the fury I'd been holding onto for days warring with a colder, more useful focus. "You said he called himself an old business partner of my father's. Did he ever mention a name? Desmond?"Madison's eyes widened slightly. "How do you know that name?""Because we've already found his photograph in my father's hidden files," I said. "You've been talking to Desmond Cole for eighteen months, Madison. The man my father forced out of this company over twenty years ago."She pressed a trembling hand to her mouth, the full shape of what she'd been entangled in clearly landing for the first time. "I didn't know his history with your father. I swear it. He only ever presented himself as someone with resources, someone who could help me if my own position in this family ever became unstable.""What else did he ask you to do?""Small things, at first. Confirming details ab

I stared at the message until the words blurred together, my hands gripping the phone so hard I half expected the screen to crack beneath my fingers. Every instinct in me screamed to call the board, to salvage whatever remained of my position at Hayes Corporation before the entire structure collapsed around me.I ignored every single one of those instincts completely."I don't care about the company," I said, my voice steadier than I felt, steadier than I had any right to feel with my son's photograph still glowing on my screen. "Whatever it costs, whatever I lose, none of it matters until Noah is safe."Olivia stood beside me, her face pale but resolute, the stuffed wolf still clutched in one hand like a talisman she refused to set down. "We're not stopping the investigation," she said. "That's exactly what they want, and if we stop now, they'll have no reason to keep him alive once they get whatever else they're actually after.""I know." I paced the length of the security office, m
