Hazel
I was finally home.
After three long years abroad, I was finally home.
Would they be proud of me now?
Would Mum and Dad look at me the same way they look at her?
Would they celebrate with me the same way they celebrate with her?
Would they pull me into a warm hug and tell me how much they miss me even though they never called to check up on me as though they were relieved I was out of their lives?
Ugh….what am I thinking?
What the hell am I allowing myself to think of?
They are my parent of course they’ll miss me, of course they’ll fill me with warm hugs and cook me some homemade dish, of course they will celebrate when they find out about my success in Paris.
I brushed off the sad thoughts that clouded my mind.
The jasmine hit me first, the sweet heavy scent from the front garden was exactly as I remembered.
“Ms Hazel?” The old guard at the gate called out to me, awe and excitement flowing through his face and words as he made his way towards me, I surged towards me, pulling him into a tight hug.
“Mark!” I cheered.
After all these years, he was still here.
“We missed you, Ms Hazel, it’s been so long.” She muffled, his eyes filled with tears.
I giggled, “I miss you too, Mark, I brought some things for you, but let me check on my parents first okay?” I pulled away, walking to the door.
As I stepped in, the sound came in, the thrum of a party, laughter and music and clinking of glasses, clacking of cutlery against plates.
Did they?
Did they throw me a party?
Of course they did.
They knew I was coming home today so they must have thrown me a welcome home party.
“I am so excited!” I giggled as I slipped through the side door, my suitcase bumping quietly against my leg.
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR PROMOTION YVONNE!
Ah…so it wasn’t a party to welcome me home?
It was a party for her…to celebrate her promotion.
It was all for her…My older sister Yvonne, the apple of their eye, their pride and joy.
I stood at the entrance, my eyes dragging through everything in sight. The table was lined up with all her favorite foods, her favorite drinks, and her favorite cakes.
And there she stood, elegant as ever in her blue sparking short dress, her hair let down, long enough to dance through her waist, her grey eyes, her full lashes, her heart shaped lips with that sparking red shade resting on her lips matching her tone perfectly, her legs so smooth and perfect, her curves so defined, almost as though it was sculpted, her boobs, not too big, not to small but perfect to make every head turn.
She is beautiful, a very beautiful woman.
By her side were my mother and father, “I am so proud of you, my angel, you have never failed me.” My mother said with so much joy.
“Of course, she takes after me!” My father's voice did justice to how proud he was of her, his eyes sparkling.
He had never looked at me that way before.
AH…I am so pathetic…what am I doing?
Why am I hiding away like some criminal?
Yvonne had been gunning for this position for as long as I know…I am happy she got it …I should be out there, celebrating with her, not sulking.
I took a deep breath, “Congratulations, Yvonne!” I yelled, waving at her as I walked in.
All eyes turned to me, shock plastered all over their faces. They were all doing a horrible job at hiding their surprises. They weren’t expecting me.
They didn’t know I was coming home.
They never read the messages, that means they don’t even know how successful I am in Paris..Ah…this sulks…I feel so stupid.
“Hazel?” Yvonne was the first to speak, dropping her flutes and she walked up to me. “Why are you home?” She rasped.
Why …why am I home?
You haven’t seen your sister in three years and the first question is Why am I home?
Swallow it…Hazel….smile…just smile.
“I came because I missed all of you…Am I not allowed to visit my family? Oh, and I am back for good this time.” I added, smiling.
Is now a good time to tell them that my company is expanding and that I am overseeing my new branch here in Mexico?
Would they think I am trying to steal her spotlight?
“You should have called instead of crashing and ruining the party.” My mother’s voice didn’t display her irritation but her face gave her away.
I did call…I texted but no one responded.
“Anyway, good to see you,” Yvonne muttered and turned away, returning to our parents who continued to dote on her and I was left at the door, feeling like a stranger.
I should go to my room and take a shower and get some rest…I am so fucking jetlagged.
As I turned to leave, I halted, realizing two people were missing from the party.
Nikolai, my sister’s husband, and Navira, their daughter.
Why are they both not here?
My eyes scanned the party a little more but they were nowhere in sight.
I should head to my room.
My phone chimed as I walked through the hallway leading to my room.
DASTON: Hey boss, how was it?
DASTON: Did your parent throw you a party?
With my face glued to my phone, I walked down the dark hallway, for some reason the light was off and my vision was blurry. As if it wasn’t bad enough that I have to wear glasses, now I have to squint my eyes to walk through this dark hallway.
My leg hit something, hard, painful and I tripped.
Fuck.
I rounded a corner and slammed into a solid wall of warm, cashmere-clad muscle. The impact knocked the air from my lungs. But rather than crashing on the hard marble floor, I felt a wide warm palm around my waist, holding me steady, landing me on a firm chest.
Shit.
Who is it?
I jerked my head up to apologize and then it happened.
Our lips collided.
Hard.
Soft.
Gentle.
Familiar.
I know that lips.
I know that smell.
I know that feel.
The light flicked on, harsh and sudden and we sprang apart.
It’s Niko.
Nikolai…My sister’s husband.
“Aevia?”
Shit.
CHAPTER 16(HAZEL)Nik had Navira over his shoulders as we walked in through the front door. he halted and turned to me, his eyes settled on me and in that moment everything that happened today crushed down my mind. The holding hands, the warm smiles, the secret glance, and the stupid thing I did …kissing his cheeks. What the hell was I thinking? Why would I have leaned in and kissed his cheeks?I wanted to tease him. When that mother said, Nik was staring at me with love in his eyes, I knew it was all the façade we created to make this work but the moment my eyes locked on him, something inside me snapped. This gaze was warm and his eyes glinted and for a moment I believed he loved me…that he felt something too but I also knew he didn’t and I hated it…I hated that he was looking at me with those eyes when they were nothing but lies and I know it was stupid but I wanted to tease him…to make him pay for making me feel that way and now…I can’t even look into his eyes.“Are you going to
CHAPTER 15(NIK)I simply stared at her, elegant, composed beautiful. She spoke to the ladies without batting an eye, making a promise she would be able to keep if it was up to her.As I stared at her, it didn’t look fake…It didn’t feel fake. Her smile, her chats with the other mothers, the way she spoke to them about Navira, about the other kids….it was beautiful. This was the life I wanted.A life with her. As my wife, as the mother of my kid. Holding hands and attending school functions together, laughing and conversing with the parents of our kids’ friends.I wish all of this was real…I wish…Hazel was mine.“Your husband must really love you.” One of the women said, It Marco’s wife, the Italian couple. Her eyes were twinkling with excitement, her words yanked me out of my thoughts.Shit.Can she tell that I have feelings for her?Shit… Shit.Hazel chuckled, effortlessly, unbothered, “He is my husband, of course he has to love me.”The women laughed.Oh…that was…smooth. It was a c
CHAPTER 14(HAZEL)FIRST DAY My hands settled on my phone; it kept ringing, but Yvonne refused to answer. I texted her last night right after Nikolai and I got home.I don’t want to be the shitty sister who stole her sister’s life and even though I enjoy being with Nik and Navira, I can’t fully enjoy it because it’s all fake.My phone chimed.A response from Yvonne.Sis – Stop calling me, Hazel. The reason I asked you to stay was so you could deal with those things for me. I have a project I am working on, stop calling me.I read the message again and again. How can she be so indifferent? Navira is her child.“Aunty Hazel…we’re going to be late!” Vira’s voice roared from the living room.I stared at myself in the mirror, my throat bobbed as I watched the blue dress drop down my body, the sparkling simple necklace that settled on my neckline, my hair in a slick bun, and the beautiful ring, Nik got me.There is no going back.My demon and angel conscience appeared at the same time aga
Chapter 13 HAZEL My eyes settled on the ring as we drove back to the house. It looked so beautiful, so perfect, like it was made only for me. But that wasn’t the only reason I was staring at it. Nik was the one who wore it for me. He took my hand in his and he dragged the ring through my finger. In that moment, it felt so real, so soft, so beautiful. His soft palm over mine, his gentle touch and his lingering scent… It’s so…. Like a wave of cold was poured over my head, realization hit me that the man who had done all this for me, is married, and not just any married man but my brother-in-law.I felt a sharp sting inside of me. Like my heart was given a sharp twist, it suddenly got so hard to breathe and my eyes stung with unshed tears. It hurts. That the man I had always wanted was not mine but my sister’s. It hurts that he doesn't even think of me the way I think of him. I’m so pathetic. I should be over him by now. I should be… thinking of starting my own family and finding m
Chapter 12 NIKOLAI “Hazel, I am lost for words. That guy is the most handsome in your college, he is smart, he is kind, he takes care of you and he helps you with school, what else are you looking for in a man?” I heard Daston scold Hazel as I washed the shrimps in the kitchen. John is the fourth guy, Hazel had turned down since she got to college. John was nice. I actually thought she’d give him a chance. I'd have given my blessing. “He doesn’t know how to cook, doesn’t know how to dress, can’t say my name in the way that makes me feel butterflies, doesn't tease me enough and he.. he… he is too perfect, I cannot.” Hazel sighed, I heard her body collide with my pillow in the living room. I stepped out of the kitchen, grinning without even realizing it. I mean if she doesn't like him, then she shouldn’t be with him. It’s no big deal. “Hazel, come taste this and tell me what you think,” I said, stepping into plain sight. She jumped off the chair and dashed faster than my cat would
Chapter 11 HAZEL I know I shouldn’t drool right now but I believe yhat I am drooling. Because I haven’t moved and I haven’t taken my eyes off him. God, he looked so hot. I have seen him cook at home, apron around his body, his hair a little rough and I know this man is hot in the kitchen but seeing him here at his work place is a different shade of masculinity. I think my knees are weak. I’m gonna fall. “Aevia?” His voice snapped me out of my unholy trance. Ah! Lord…. Why have you forsaken me by placing this temptation before me. You know I am such a hypocrite. Blaming the lord when I am actually the one who drove myself here. I cleared my throat, forcing a smile, hiding the blush on my cheek which was almost impossible, “Sorry, I … uhm… never seen you at work before… it’s… never mind… sorry for staring.” “It’s fine.. come on.” He gestured towards the chair he pulled out for me, a habit he hadn’t change. He has been doing this since we got close enough to eat together. Even
CHAPTER 3HAZELNikolai stood there, with two bottles of sauce, hot chili sauce, and extremely hot chili sauce, I guess he was about to ask if I was still into spicy food.Shit….I can’t move. His eyes went from my face, to the thin tank top and shorts I had slid into and now his eyes were directly
HAZELMy full name is Hazel Aevia Rosewood. And only Nikolai calls me Aevia. My very hot…very sexy…very tempting brother-in-law.I know… I know I shouldn’t be thinking about that…I shouldn’t be attracted to him…He is my brother-in-law but have you seen this man? This extremely tall, sexy, down-to-e
Chapter 6 HAZEL Ring! Ring! Ring! No answer. I called again and again and again. Yvonne didn’t take any of my calls. My fist tightened around my phone. I felt this rage burning inside me. How could she not have attended her daughter's school? How could she have failed to come over even if it
CHAPTER 5NIKOLAI“I swear to God, Aevia, this is horror, how on earth am I supposed to like this, how do you even like this?” I grumbled, grabbing the popcorn, holding it close to my chest walking to my couch, in my joggers and white tee, and on my couch, whose face glued to the screen was Hazel,
