Serena’s POV

"You're scared of me." The words leave my mouth before I can stop them.

Damien pauses mid-step. Slowly, he turns back to face me. The hallway is empty now. Just us. His smile is still there, but something behind it shifts. "Scared?" He tilts his head. "That's an interesting word."

"You're watching me like I'm a bomb about to go off." I keep my voice steady. "Either you're scared, or you're waiting for me to explode." He doesn't answer right away. That silence tells me more than words would. "You're smarter than they said," he murmurs finally. "Who said?" His smile returns. Wider this time. Wrong.

"Everyone talks, Serena. You'd be surprised what people say when they think no one important is listening." He steps closer. Not threatening. Not quite. But close enough that I have to fight the urge to step back.

"Here's some free advice." His voice drops low. "In this pack, the ones who survive aren't the strongest. They're the ones who know when to stay quiet." "Is that what you do?" I ask. "Stay quiet?"

Something flickers in his eyes. Just for a second, Then it's gone. "I do what's necessary." He straightens his jacket casually. "You should learn to do the same." He walks away without another word. I watch him disappear around the corner. My hands are shaking. I press them flat against my thighs to stop the trembling.

He didn't threaten me. Not directly. But every word felt like a warning wrapped in silk. The ones who survive aren't the strongest. They're the ones who know when to stay quiet. Is that what he wants? My silence?

Or is he telling me that someone else's silence is what's keeping me alive?

I find Maya in the healer's room an hour later. She's grinding herbs at a small table, her back to the door. The smell is sharp and green. Familiar in a way that makes me think of my mother's old kitchen.

"You look worse than this morning," she says without turning around. "Thanks." She glances over her shoulder. Her expression softens when she sees my face. "Sit down before you fall down." I sink into the chair across from her. My legs feel like water. "I talked to Damien," I say. Her hands stop moving. "And?"

"He told me the ones who survive are the ones who stay quiet."

Maya is silent for a long moment. Then she sets down her pestle and turns to face me fully. "What did you say back?"

"I asked if that's what he does." She exhales slowly. "That was either very brave or very stupid." "Probably both." She almost smiles. Almost.

"Serena." She leans forward slightly. "Damien doesn't say things by accident. Every word is chosen. If he told you to stay quiet, he's testing you." "Testing me for what?" "To see if you'll obey." Her eyes hold mine. "Or if you'll fight." The weight of her words settles over me.

"What happens if I fight?"

Maya doesn't answer. She doesn't have to. The rest of the day passes in a blur. I avoid the main hall. Avoid Marcus. Avoid the wolves who keep glancing at me like I'm something dangerous they haven't figured out yet, but I can't avoid him forever.

Kael finds me at sunset. I'm standing at the edge of the garden, watching the trees darken as the light fades. The forest looks different now. Less like a place. More like a threat. "You've been hiding." His voice comes from behind me. Close. Too close. I don't turn around. "I've been thinking." "Dangerous habit," I almost laugh. Almost.

"Damien talked to me today," I say. Silence, then footsteps. He moves until he's standing beside me, his shoulder almost brushing mine. "What did he say?"

"That the ones who survive stay quiet." I finally look at him. "Is that true?"

Kael's jaw tightens. "Damien talks too much." "That's not an answer." "It's the only one I'm giving you." Frustration rises in my chest. "Why won't anyone tell me the truth?"

"Because the truth gets people killed." The words land hard. I stare at him. His face is half-shadowed in the dying light. His eyes are fixed on the forest, but I can feel the tension rolling off him.

"Then why are you here?" I ask quietly. He doesn't answer right away. When he does, his voice is lower. Rougher. "Because I can't seem to stay away." My breath catches. The bond tugs at me. That invisible thread pulling tight between us.

I should step back. I should put distance between us. I should remember everything Marcus said about what this bond could cost, but I don't move. Neither does he. "This is a bad idea," I whisper. "I know." "We shouldn't be alone together." "I know."

"Then why—"  "Because nothing about this makes sense." He turns to face me fully. His eyes are gold in the fading light. Burning. "You're everything I should reject. Everything pack law says I can't have. And still—" He stops. His hand lifts. Hovers near my face.

I hold my breath. His fingers brush my jaw. Just barely. Just enough to send fire racing down my spine. "Still what?" I breathe. His thumb traces my cheekbone. Slow. Deliberate. "Still, you're the only thing I can think about."

The confession breaks something open inside me. I should pull away. I should remember the note. The warning, the danger. But his hand is warm against my skin. And his eyes are looking at me like I'm something precious and terrifying all at once.

"Kael—" "Don't." His voice is rough. "Don't say we can't. I already know." "Then what are we doing?"

He doesn't answer. Instead, he leans closer. His forehead touches mine. His breath is warm against my lips. We stay like that. Not moving, not speaking, just breathing. The bond hums between us. Alive. Demanding. And for one perfect, terrible moment, nothing else exists. Then a howl cuts through the silence.

Kael pulls back sharply. His head snaps toward the forest. Another howl. Closer. His whole body goes rigid. "That's not one of ours," I say. "No." His voice is cold now. Controlled. "It's not." He grabs my arm. "Get inside. Now."

"Kael—"

"Now, Serena." He's already moving toward the trees. Shifting mid-step. Bones cracking. Fur spreading. Within seconds, a massive black wolf is running into the darkness. I stand frozen at the edge of the garden. The howls are getting louder. More of them now, not one wolf, but many. My blood turns to ice.

This isn't like last time; this is bigger.

I turn and run toward the mansion, but before I reach the door, someone steps out of the shadows. A figure I don't recognize, A wolf I've never seen. He smiles at me. Slow. Knowing.

"Hello, Serena." His voice is calm. Pleasant. "We've been waiting for you." I open my mouth to scream, but his hand is already over my face.

Serena’s POVI don't scream. I want to. The fear is right there, clawing at the back of my throat. But I swallow it down and force myself to think.Someone was in my room. While the whole mansion was in chaos. While wolves ran through the halls and guards shouted orders, I stood in Marcus's study, learning my blood could end everything. Someone slipped in here, scratched open my window, and left a threat on my floor, next time, he won't reach you first. My hands shake as I read the words again, he, Kael. They're talking about Kael. I fold the paper carefully. Slide it into my pocket. My fingers are steadier than they should be, but my mind is spinning too fast to catch up. Who?The question circles like a vulture. It could be anyone. A wolf loyal to Damien. Someone paid by the enemy pack. Or someone closer. Someone I've already met. Already spoken to.Marcus's voice echoes in my head. Someone inside this mansion told them exactly where to find you. I look at the window again. The scra

He steps closer at once, filling the hall, blocking the light, blocking my way out. His cut shoulder is wrapped now, but I can still smell blood under the clean shirt he changed into. For one wild second, I almost tell him everything. That Marcus said our bond is worse than forbidden, that if one of us dies, the other dies too, that someone inside this house sent wolves to my window, that his own father told me not to trust him. Then Marcus’s last words hit me again.Trust no one. Not even Kael, so I lie.“Nothing useful.”Kael goes very still. He knows. Not what I’m hiding. Just that I’m hiding something. His eyes search my face, slow and sharp. “Try again.” “I said nothing useful.”“Serena.” Just my name. But the way he says it makes my spine lock. I push past him, or try to. His hand closes around my wrist before I make it two step

Serena's POV"That's not possible." The words leave my mouth, but they sound far away. Like someone else is speaking through me.Kael stands in the doorway, chest heaving, eyes burning gold. The fury on his face is terrifying. But underneath it, I see something worse, fear, he's afraid of me."Kael, you need to calm down." Marcus moves between us slowly. Carefully. Like approaching a wild animal. "Calm down?" Kael laughs, but there's no humor in it. "You brought her here knowing what she is. Knowing what the prophecy says. And you didn't tell me.""I was going to.""When?" Kael's voice explodes through the room. "After she destroys everything? After I'm dead?"The word hits me like a punch. Dead. Because of me. My legs give out. I sink into the chair behind me, clutching the pendant so hard the edges dig into my palm."I would never hurt you." The words come out broken. Desperate. "I didn't even know about any of this until tonight."Kael's gaze snaps to me. The intensity makes me fli

His golden eyes stay fixed on my face, patient and calculating. "I understand this is difficult to hear," he says calmly. "But I assure you, I'm not lying." I stand up so fast the chair scrapes against the floor. My legs feel weak. My chest feels tight. Everything feels wrong. "I'm nobody." My voice shakes. "I'm just a girl whose mom remarried. I don't have special blood. I don't have prophecies attached to my name. I'm nothing."Marcus closes the ancient book slowly. Sets it on his desk with careful precision. "Your father," he says quietly. "What did your mother tell you about him?" The question catches me off guard. My thoughts stumble."He was a pack warrior. Loyal. Strong. He died protecting our territory two years ago." The words come out automatically. Rehearsed. The story I've told myself a thousand times.Mar
