Serena's POV

"That's not possible." The words leave my mouth, but they sound far away. Like someone else is speaking through me.

Kael stands in the doorway, chest heaving, eyes burning gold. The fury on his face is terrifying. But underneath it, I see something worse, fear, he's afraid of me.

"Kael, you need to calm down." Marcus moves between us slowly. Carefully. Like approaching a wild animal. "Calm down?" Kael laughs, but there's no humor in it. "You brought her here knowing what she is. Knowing what the prophecy says. And you didn't tell me."

"I was going to."

"When?" Kael's voice explodes through the room. "After she destroys everything? After I'm dead?"

The word hits me like a punch. Dead. Because of me. My legs give out. I sink into the chair behind me, clutching the pendant so hard the edges dig into my palm.

"I would never hurt you." The words come out broken. Desperate. "I didn't even know about any of this until tonight."

Kael's gaze snaps to me. The intensity makes me flinch. "It doesn't matter what you know." His voice drops low. Dangerous. "The prophecy doesn't care about your intentions. It cares about blood. About power. About fate."

"Fate isn't fixed," Marcus interjects firmly. "Prophecies can be interpreted many ways. The outcome isn't certain."

"Don't." Kael holds up a hand, silencing his father. "Don't stand there and pretend you brought her here to protect the pack. You brought her here because you wanted control. You wanted the Silverborne power on your side."

Marcus's expression hardens. "I brought her here because she would have been killed otherwise. Those wolves tonight were just the beginning. There are packs out there who would tear her apart just to prevent the prophecy from coming true." My stomach lurches. "What?"

Neither of them looks at me. "She's safer here," Marcus continues. "Under your protection. Under pack law." "Pack law?" Kael steps closer, his voice turning venomous. Pack law says I should have rejected her the moment I knew what she was. Pack law says a threat to the Alpha must be eliminated."

The word "eliminated" echoes through my skull.

"I'm not a threat," I whisper.

Kael finally looks at me. Really looks good. And what I see in his eyes makes my heart crack. conflict, desire, pain. The bond pulls between us, invisible but impossible to ignore. I feel it in my chest. He feels it too. I know he does.

"You're the biggest threat I've ever faced," he says quietly. "Because I can't bring myself to do what I should." The confession hangs in the air. raw. honest.

Marcus watches us both, calculating. "Then don't," he says simply. "Don't fight the bond. Don't fight her. The prophecy speaks of completion as well as destruction. She could make you stronger, Kael. More powerful than any Alpha before you."

"Or she could be the end of everything."

The words fall like stones. Heavy. Final.

I stand up slowly. My legs shake, but I force them to be steady.

"Then let me leave." Both men freeze. "What?" Kael's voice sharpens.

"If I'm such a danger, let me go." I meet his eyes, even though it hurts. "I didn't ask for any of this. I didn't ask to be your mate. I didn't ask to have some ancient prophecy attached to my name. I just wanted a fresh start."

My voice cracks on the last word. I swallow hard and keep going.

"So let me leave. I'll disappear. Go somewhere no one knows me. You'll never have to worry about the prophecy. You'll never have to wonder if I'm going to destroy you."

Silence stretches between us.

Kael's expression flickers. Something vulnerable breaks through the anger. Something that looks almost like longing, Then it disappears. "You can't leave," he says flatly.m"Why not?"

"Because the moment you step outside pack territory, you're dead." His jaw tightens. "Those wolves tonight? They weren't acting alone. Someone hired them. Someone powerful. And they won't stop until they have you."

The chill returns to my blood. "Who?"

Kael glances at Marcus. Something unspoken passes between them. "We don't know yet," Marcus admits. "But we have suspicions."

"Then tell me." "It's not that simple." "Nothing is simple!" The words explode out of me, surprising all three of us. "My whole life just got ripped apart in one night. My father wasn't who I thought he was. My blood makes me a target. And the man I'm apparently fated to be with thinks I'm going to kill him."

My chest heaves. Tears burn behind my eyes, but I refuse to let them fall. "So stop protecting me from the truth and just tell me what I'm dealing with."

Kael and Marcus exchange another look. Finally, Kael speaks. "There are wolves in this pack who don't want me as Alpha." His voice is measured. Controlled. "They've been waiting for an opportunity to challenge my position. Weaken my authority."

"Damien," I whisper.

Kael's eyes flash. "You're smarter than you look."

I ignore the backhanded compliment. "He was at the garden tonight. Right after the attack. Like he was expecting it."

"Because he probably was." Kael's hands curl into fists. "Damien has wanted my position since the day I took it. He's patient. Strategic. And now that you're here."

"He has leverage," I finish.

Kael nods slowly. "A Silverborne heir bonded to the Alpha. If he can control you, he controls the prophecy. The pack. Everything."

The pendant grows heavier in my hand. "So I'm just a pawn." The realization settles over me like cold water. "To everyone. Marcus brought me here to use me. Damien wants to control me. And you."

I look at Kael. The bond pulses painfully in my chest.

"What do you want?"

The question catches him off guard. For a moment, his mask slips completely. I see hunger. Possessiveness. Desperate, terrifying need.

Then he shuts it down. Locks it away. "What I want doesn't matter." His voice turns cold again. "What matters is keeping you alive long enough to figure out how to break this prophecy."

"Can it be broken?"

"I don't know." He turns toward the door. "But I'm going to find out." He leaves without looking back. The door slams behind him. I stand alone with Marcus, the pendant still clutched in my shaking hand.

"He'll come around," Marcus says quietly. I laugh bitterly. "Will he? Because it sounds like he's more interested in breaking our bond than accepting it."

Marcus studies me carefully. Something shifts in his golden eyes. "The bond between an Alpha and a Silverborne isn't like normal mate bonds, Serena. It's stronger. Deeper. More dangerous." "Dangerous how?"

He hesitates. The pause makes my stomach clench.

"Normal bonds can be rejected. Broken, if both parties choose." He moves closer slowly. "But an Alpha-Silverborne bond is different. Once it's fully formed, it becomes unbreakable. Permanent. The two wolves become linked in ways that go beyond emotion." My heart pounds. "What does that mean?"

Marcus's voice drops to barely a whisper.

"It means if one dies, the other dies too."

The words knock the breath from my lungs.

If I die, Kael dies.

If Kael dies, I die. We're tied together. Forever. Whether we want it or not. My knees buckle again. This time, I don't catch myself. Marcus grabs my arm, steadying me.

"There's still time," he says quickly. "The bond isn't fully formed yet. It needs to be sealed. Completed."

"How?" I gasp.

His expression grows serious. Heavy.

"Through claiming. Through mating." He holds my gaze. "If Kael claims you before the next full moon, the bond becomes permanent. Unbreakable."

The next full moon. I don't even know when that is. "And if he doesn't?"

Marcus releases my arm slowly. "Then the bond remains unstable. Dangerous. It will drive both of you mad with need until one of you breaks completely." My head spins. Too much. This is too much. I stagger toward the door. Need air. Need space. Need to think.

"Serena," Marcus calls after me. I pause with my hand on the handle. "There's one more thing you should know." I don't turn around. Can't. If I look at him, I might shatter.

"The wolves who attacked tonight," he says slowly. "They didn't just know where you were. They knew which room. Which window?" My blood freezes. "Someone inside this mansion told them exactly where to find you."

The words sink in slowly. Horribly. A traitor. Inside the pack. Inside this house. Someone who wants me dead badly enough to work with enemies. I turn around finally. "Who?" My voice barely works.

Marcus shakes his head. "I don't know. But until we find out." He steps closer. His golden eyes burn into mine.

"Trust no one. Not even Kael."

His golden eyes bore into mine, and I see something there I didn't expect. Fear, not of me, of what he just said."You heard me." His jaw tightens. "You're my mate." The word hits like a fist. I yank my hand back. This time, he lets go. "That's impossible." I step away from him. "We just met." "I knew it the moment I smelled you." His voice is flat. Final. "Before I even walked down those stairs."His hands curl into fists at his sides. Something dangerous moves across his face. Like he's deciding how much to say, He turns away instead. "Your wolf what?" I press. "It doesn't matter.""It does matter." My voice shakes and I hate it. "You're telling me fate chose you. My stepbrother. The Alpha of this pack."
