Maeve.

I found him just before dawn.

The training yard was empty, mist curling low over the stones like a secret being whispered to the earth.

Roy was alone at the edge, rolling his shoulders out, blades strapped to his forearms like he was prepping for sparring that wasn’t going to happen.

He looked up the moment I crossed into view.

Not surprised.

Not curious.

Just calculating.

“Couldn’t sleep?” he asked, voice casual.

“Didn’t feel like lying,” I replied, matching his tone.

His jaw twitched. “A bit dramatic, don’t you think?”

I smiled.

No warmth.

Just teeth.

“You think I’m stupid, don’t you?”

He tilted his head slightly. “What makes you say that?”

“You walked into my room last night. Lied to my face. Took something that didn’t belong to you. And left thinking I wouldn’t notice.”

A beat passed.

Then another.

“You’re sure about that?” he asked quietly.

I stepped closer, slow and measured.

“I don’t need to be sure,” I said. “I just need to see what you do next.”

Carson. The room was thick with the smell of stone and dust and hidden things, the weight of the air pressing down until it felt like it might suffocate me, and Roy stood there in the faint glow of the lantern with the vial in his hand, his body loose but his eyes sharp, watching me as if I were not his Alpha but his prey.I stepped closer, my fists tight, my chest heavy with rage that burned so hot it almost blinded me, and every memory of him standing at my side, of him swearing loyalty, of him fighting with me, shattered under the truth I had just seen.“You were going to poison me,” I said, my voice low but steady.Roy tilted his head, the faint smile never leaving his face. “I was going to save the pack. You have lost control, Carson. You chase a woman who does not want you, you drag us all into war because of your obsession, and soon they will all die for it. I am only doing what must be done."The words cut deep, and my wolf snarled inside me, the sound rising in my chest until

Maeve.I sat on the bed with my knees pulled to my chest, my fingers gripping the blanket so tightly that my knuckles turned pale, and the silence around me felt sharp enough to cut through skin. My wolf was pacing again, restless, growling at the air, whispering warnings into my head, but I felt too tired to listen. I could still hear Johan’s words from earlier, repeating in my mind again and again, louder than my wolf, louder than my own thoughts. The door opened and he stepped inside, carrying something in his hand this time, wrapped carefully in dark cloth, and his movements were slower than before, more deliberate, as if he wanted me to see how careful he was with whatever he carried.I straightened slowly, suspicion crawling through me. “What is that?”He stopped near the table, his eyes fixed on mine as he set it down gently. “A truth you were never meant to see.”I shook my head, fear twisting in my chest. “I do not want your truths. I know who I am.”Johan’s lips curved, not

Maeve. The night was long and heavy, the air thick with the smell of herbs that clung to the walls and burned faintly in the back of my throat, and I lay on the narrow bed staring at the ceiling, my thoughts moving in circles I could not escape. Every time I closed my eyes I saw Carson’s face, torn with worry and anger, but then Johan’s words would echo again, steady and certain, reminding me that my strength was not mine alone, that it had come from something I did not yet understand.I turned onto my side, the blanket slipping from my shoulder, and my wolf stirred again inside me, restless, pacing, its voice clearer than it had ever been before. He is lying, it whispered, sharp and angry. You belong to Carson. You know this. But the whisper trembled, as if it too was unsure, and that small tremor sent fear curling tight in my chest. The door opened quietly, and Johan stepped inside, carrying a small bowl in his hands, the steam rising from it filling the air with a bitter scent. He

Maeve. The room was still when I opened my eyes again, the lamp burning low in the corner and the shadows moving across the walls like slow waves, and for a moment I almost convinced myself it was a dream and that Carson would walk in and take me home, but the scent in the air was sharp with smoke and herbs and it was not his scent that wrapped around me, it was Johan’s.He was sitting in the chair by the bed, his posture relaxed, his eyes watching me with that strange calm that made me uneasy, as if he already knew what I would do before I did it. He had not left me alone for long, I realized, because his shirt was still stained with dried blood and his hands were clasped together, steady and patient.“You woke again,” he said, his voice soft but clear. “Good. Your body is stronger than you think, Maeve.”I swallowed, my throat dry. “Why are you keeping me here?”He leaned forward slowly, his elbows resting on his knees. “Because if I let you go now, you will only run back to him, an

Carson. The first thing I felt when I opened my eyes was pain, a sharp tearing in my side and a heavy weight pressing down on my chest that made it hard to breathe, and for a moment I thought I was still in the fight, still locked with Johan, still clawing and bleeding and roaring, but then the silence settled around me and I realized the fight was over and I was lying in the dirt alone.I pushed myself up slowly, every muscle screaming, the world spinning around me, and when I looked down at my hands they were red with blood, mine and his, and the ground where we had fought was torn apart like a storm had ripped through it. The smell of blood was everywhere, sharp and heavy, and it clung to me so thick I thought I would choke on it.Then I remembered her. Maeve. Her scream, the sight of her falling, the blood spilling from her arm, it all came back in a rush that made my stomach twist. I staggered to my feet, my eyes scanning the ground, the trees, searching for her, calling her name

Maeve.Everything was blurred. The moon above me smeared like pale paint across the sky and the trees leaned in too close and the ground was wet under my cheek, wet and warm, and it took me a moment to realize it was my own blood.I heard them shouting. Carson’s voice, rough and desperate, calling my name. Johan’s voice, lower, sharper, but filled with something that almost sounded like worry. Both voices pulling me in two directions at once.My arm burned where the claws had cut me. My chest rose and fell shallow, each breath harder than the last, but my ears caught every sound around me. The crash of leaves. The grind of claws in the dirt. The ragged breathing of two men who hated each other enough to bleed for it.“Maeve, stay awake. Stay with me,” Carson’s voice pressed close, hot and frantic, as if he was kneeling right beside me.Then Johan, closer than I expected, his tone quieter. “Do not waste your strength fighting. Let me take you. Let me fix this.”I blinked hard, vision s
